A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Art recalls jewelry & dessert treats - but hard materials as a statement? Just as likely I'm wrong & the Design's the thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Webhamster Henry:

Just a quick note for Mid-Hudsonaires in case it's not on the WFMU Cultural Calendar: Ms. Laura Cantrell will be playing at BSP in Kingston tomorrow night.
  9:13am Tiago:

Bom Dia (although it's afternoon here)
looking forward to Vetiver

there is some primitive chunk of my brain whose sole purpose is to make me grin every time i hear any version of 'In C'. this version is particularly adept at tweaking that bit of my subconscious. thanks!

I was dreaming about Terry Riley last night. But his name was Poppy Nogood in the dream. He just sat there and smiled a lot while I tried to explain things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Webhamster Henry:

Laura is in Brooklyn tonight at Union Hall... in case you still live in NYC.
Avatar 9:15am pierre:

Trouble, I am in Paris since saturday, been in the Scot Lands for 9 days, it's been what it has always been to me : absolutely wonderful !

you'd like to go there ?
Avatar 9:15am chromaphone:

I guess sometimes record skips sound good :)

  9:16am Claw!:

¡Buenos dias, Mundo Moderno!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Trouble:

i would LOOOOve to go to scotland. The landscape looks other worldly and oooo the accents. was it hard for you to understand their english? i tried to speak with a canadien from Quebec last week and it was nearly impossible to understand him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it looks tiny, like jewelry or candy - but an interesting confluence of textures & colors...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Trouble:

bueno claw! hello chromaphone. no skips here, only live mostly african musicians
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

When cooking rice, is it better to add olive oil or butter to keep things from sticking? I hate it when it all blobs together.
Avatar 9:20am chromaphone:

Cool. Mornin'
Avatar 9:20am pierre:

you'll go there one day i'm sure ! But if you do, please pass by here before !!! :)
Yes I lived one year in Glasgow, so the accent is no problem for me (after the first three pints), then Edinburgh is not very strong.
Avatar 9:21am pierre:

But the accent match the landscape in beauty, I totally give you that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Brian in UK:

Hello Trouble and associates.

@Ken buy a rice cooker and make sure you let it sit for at last fifteen minutes after it finishes cooking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Ken From Hyde Park:

If you can understand Groundskeeper Willie, you should be fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Brian in UK:

@pierre the accent in the Shetlands and Orkneys is getting Scandinavian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am AndrewC.:

Mmm... sticky rice...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Brian. I do have a rice cooker. I need more practice.
Avatar 9:25am bobdoesthings:

good morning!
Avatar 9:26am duke:

africa express is just the thing for today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Webhamster Henry:

Scotland is beautiful, and I believe you can still get a Vegetarian haggis in Edinburgh - although I'm not sure about a gluten free one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Brian in UK:

@Ken just add water. Say three measures of rice, add three and one half measures of water. No butter. Leave it turned on after cooking then give it a good stir and it should come out separate.
Avatar 9:28am pierre:

@Brian : yeah that's exactly what an guide told me :)
@ Webhamster Henry : you can absolutely still get veggie haggis :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Brian in UK:

When the sun shines in the Highlands of Scotland there is no finer place.
Where the rain falls in Scotland there are better places to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Webhamster Henry:

That's good news - I haven't been back to Scotland since we honeymooned there in 1996!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am ausmanx:

people seem to over-complicate rice. just get some salted water on the boil, chuck the rice in when it's boiling and as long as you stir it at the start when you add it to the water, the grains won't stick. don't stir after that while it's cooking. 15 minutes later on a fast boil, it's perfect. i assume the scots deep fry their rice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Brian in UK:

I hope the Scots are happy with their election result. Anything with the word Nationalist in it worries me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Webhamster Henry:

if you can't get to Scotland, at least watch I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING (1945) with Wendy Hiller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Webhamster Henry:

Is there a Scots version of in C?
  9:33am sugarwolf:

Trouble was the Canadian speaking English or French? For some reason I can understand French spoken by Canadians better than by the French. Also had some Swiss people in my shop that I could sort of understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Brian in UK:

For you bagpipe fans. In pibroCh
Avatar 9:36am pierre:

@Webhamster Henry: this is a fine place to honeymoon :)
@ Brian : I like the rain there, I feel like it's part of the land, therefore I don't mind it as much as i do in Paris for example. Also, i've met two kind of Scots, some SNP's, and some that didn't care, they were rather happy, everybody was saying that it was rather historical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

This is great.

Totally agree Jeff. A thrill ride from minute one.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Trouble:

saw that webmaster henry it was great! i also tried to watch that brit detective series set in wales, gorgeous from the get go, but gruesome. couldn't deal with the gore. sugarwolf: he was difficult to understand in english but his see sawing accent en francais was insanely difficult to understand. listening to the french in the movie i saw this weekend about the guitar scene in agadez Niger was much easier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Trouble:

here is a link to that fab agadez film: anthologyfilmarchives.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Trouble:

yes jennique, this one is for you!!
  10:26am davej:

The Blur tune has more than a little Flaming Lips about it. Not that that's a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Priscilla:

@Spiritbeans: Haha! Thanks for the Beaker video Duke.
Avatar 10:30am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Merci beaucoup Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...think I've always liked Blur (maybe even their 1st album the most - opposite of everyone else)...but Oasis only selelctively!
- so we'll compare them to Flaming Lips now!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Priscilla:

Saw Maria Bamford at BAM last weekend. Unbelievably talented & funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Priscilla:

Well that was a conversation stopper

i can't say enough about how wonderful this band is. i fell in love with their first recording and and still a faithful follower. their latest Complet Strangers is super fab. buy them all kiddies. this live set is a collection of songs from several of his past releases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Adrian in London:

@Trouble I'll be sure to check him out. By the way, new Arnaud Fleurent-Didier stuff on the horizon, it would seem.

  11:22am Mark:

They recorded this yesterday in Studio B or something? Kudos to Joel the engineer--the sound is superb, and of course, the performance is magnificent!
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

Big excitement in the 'hood this week. We spotted a Cooper's hawk maneuvering low in the trees, intent on the neighbor's chickens who were out for a stroll.

But all were swept to safety, and we were spared any comparisons to Wild Kingdom.
Avatar 11:28am bobdoesthings:

hehehe , vetiver is great!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Trouble:

uh uh, close call Brian. my two remaining hens weathered the winter but are making quite a ruckus in the backyard without a lot of eggs to show for themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Brian in UK:

Trouble our chooks seem to have picked up the pace after wintertime, for old gals that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Trouble:

what's old brian in UK? our gals are going on three and they are still laying but of course not daily.
  11:50am rw:

Why do I never get tired of this Cambodian rock? Which reminds me... tickets for the film go on sale today in Los Angeles... Thanks Trouble!
Avatar 11:52am bobdoesthings:

@rw - Me too, can never get enough.
Avatar 11:53am still b/p:

Eager to see that film sometime. Love the organ in Unique Child. Saw an old Hammond at Salvation Army the other day that probably came from a church, for 150 bucks. Need? No. Can I play it? Only hamfisty idle hunt-and-peck riffs. Want? Oh, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Brian in UK:

Well they were rescued hens probably about five years ago and they would have been 1-2 years old then roughly. 'Time passes' as Dylan Thomas writes, by the by it was DT Day last week on the BBC
  11:55am Mark:

I stumbled across another Cambodian album in the new releases section of the FMU library--I guess it was believed lost but then it reappeared, and they're treating it as "new." I don't think it's that new, though. But it's good--"Psychedelic Cambodia" or something. There's a great version of "House of the Rising Sun" on it.
