A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning.

Pastoral sci fi... I like that.
  9:08am Mark:

This Aidan Baker is beautiful. And Arthur Russell is the perfect segue. You're off to a great start!

Good morning Modern lovers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Trouble:

there is a newish movie out there that I think Tal R is in, a ship of scientists and artists set off to sail around greenland. found it last night but lost the title this morning, it looks fab.
Avatar 9:39am Sem Chumbo:

Hey, sphere!
Avatar 9:40am bobdoesthings:

oh man.. I was CONVINCED today was wednesday. Good morning Tuesday and trouble and all.
Avatar 9:41am βrian:

Anybody know where I can buy some vegetarian menudo?
Avatar 9:42am d¢ pät:

Greenland: Not to bum everyone out but I read a piece in Harpers last night about a woman who has been going to Greenland and hunting with Inuits since the 90's. They can't really hunt anymore because the ice is going away. Kind of a devastating article. So if you want to see the real impact of Earth warming and you want to get bummed out, read it. "Rotten Ice" I think it's called.
Avatar 9:43am d¢ pät:

It's funny Brian, I want to make that kind of stuff--the kind of fake meat that no one handles. Currently working a vegan half smoke.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Webhamster Henry:

Good to see Arthur Russell back in consciousness; I heard him live in a basically empty Roulette in 1985.
Avatar 9:55am d¢ pät:

this marion brown piece is perectamundo for the world right now.
Avatar 9:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I have yet to see a perectamundo in the wild.
Avatar 9:56am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Or is that a capybara?
Avatar 9:56am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Trouble:

put that marion brown album cover up on instagram for you dc pat. my handle is giantpompom
Avatar 9:59am bobdoesthings:

are you suggesting the Innuits will move south and begin hunting.... us?! This is some propaganda I can get behind. Stop climate change ... or the innuits will get us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am sphere:

Swarms of ravenous penguins will overwhelm Nova Scotia as they look for new prey....
Avatar 10:01am glenn:

inuit is already the plural.
Avatar 10:02am bobdoesthings:

shut up glenn.
  10:03am OnYerCase:

Well, Inuit, technically
  10:03am Domenic:

Christ---these Dad songs are cool water in the bottle!
Avatar 10:04am d¢ pät:

They can't move south, north isn't much better and they don't want to fish. It's the usual scene, people drinking too much, committing suicide. Culture being taken away. You have to expect change over time but this is happening at lightening speed and is decimating the fabric of their society. But I'm on board with a terror propaganda campaign...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am ausmanx:

when the Greenland shelf melts, it will release so much methane that we'll all be dead anyway. so not to worry. we should make the best of the time we have left, go to gigs, take drugs, and generally be really nice to people.
Avatar 10:05am d¢ pät:

@ausmanx is right. the real story is it's too late, we can't stop it now. SO, forget all that, rock out and drink bourbon!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!
Avatar 10:06am d¢ pät:

oh man, forgot about this Mekons tune!! nice choice, trouble.
Avatar 10:06am glenn:

  10:06am will:

From Marion Brown to the Mekons. Why we listen (to the radio).
Avatar 10:06am chromaphone:

Is Miss Piggy in the Mekons?
Avatar 10:07am Sem Chumbo:

The swarms of ravenous penguins will be the least of our trouble, as @ausmanx cogently points out. However, I am ready to do battle with the tuxedo-camouflaged interlopers if they try to get into my hummingbird feeders.
Avatar 10:09am glenn:

hummingbirds are a lot more vicious than penguins. i wouldn't worry about them
Avatar 10:09am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@dcpat [9:43] -- jeezus, man, frankenstein the perfect vegan halfsmoke & I'll be there instantly. Mit der beersies.
Avatar 10:09am d¢ pät:

"the abyss is close to home."
Avatar 10:10am d¢ pät:

Right on @Rev. Problem is, I've never tasted one! Might have to hold my nose and do research.
Avatar 10:11am bobdoesthings:

@glenn - but the image of blood thirsty viscious penguins is great... I think it' b/c of how they waddle.
Avatar 10:11am d¢ pät:

Thought we were going to get a Mekons twofer there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no, I meant the perectamundi & capybara will find their ways to more temperate zones. We can keep them @ bay by proffering them vegan smoky-flavor treats. Ingenuity will assure Utopia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am ausmanx:

Avatar 10:15am chromaphone:

What about jellyfish? Haven't they already begun taking over the world?
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

@RRabit: Do you mean the Pecatta Mundi?
Avatar 10:17am Rev. Turnip Druid:

DCPAT: It's true what they say: the texture's the thing. I take regular breaks from the vegetarian thing, every few months. For kicks. When I moved back to DC after years in AZ & Maine, had to have a ritual halfsmoke with everything @ Ben's Chili Bowl. ... It's HILARIOUS what a tourist trap it's become since the 1980s, before the metro came to the neighborhood & made it less scary for bus-loads of people with matching t-shirts...
Avatar 10:19am βrian:

As far as texture, I think seitan rules.
Avatar 10:19am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Trouble - were you aware that Blur played a free show last week in Williamsburg? I have not listened to their new album yet. Thoughts?
  10:20am Claw!:

Dayummm! I really did this cut, Trouble! You're always so on-point!

Howdy, Y'all!

Oooooh, Abbey and Co. are tippin....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sphere:

When I was a college music reviewer in the early 90s, I got a +1 for an UK band called Senseless Things at a local Baltimore dive. Blur, who were huge in the UK at the time, *opened* for them. The look on Damian's face was priceless.
Avatar 10:24am Sem Chumbo:

@ausmanx: hahaha, danger in black and white!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Trouble:

nOOO! i did not know that jennique, ow. have not heard the new record. no thoughts. just sweart words cuz i keep messin up on the dj end, those are my thoughts...
Avatar 10:25am d¢ pät:

oh yeah, this would be a seating-based experiment. I've figured out how to cook it to get the texture right.

@Rev: Beeeeeennnnnnnnn's
Avatar 10:26am d¢ pät:

*seitan-based. the autocorrect on Safari now is fekkin annoying.
Avatar 10:26am listener mark:

Something about this song by abbey lincoln reminds me of nightclubs. I think I'll have a cosmopolitan for breakfast.
Avatar 10:29am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Trouble - I knew about the free show and tried to be one of the special ones to get a ticket, but to no avail. There's a review in the NYTimes about it, which I love for the last two sentences, "...finally, the sarcastic blast of “Song 2,” which had the packed club shouting “Woo-hoo” and pogoing like a punk crowd. It was nostalgic, but fully engaged."
Avatar 10:29am Sem Chumbo:

@sphere: looked into Senseless Things: quite a career arc:1991 - "Everybody's Gone" - UK No. 73
1991 - "Got it at the Delmar" - UK No. 50
1991 - "Easy to Smile" - UK No. 18
1991 - "Up & Coming" (CD re-release)
1992 - "Hold it Down" - UK No. 19
1992 - "Homophobic Asshole"
1993 - "Primary Instinct" - UK No. 41
1993 - "Too Much Kissing" - UK No. 69
1994 - "Christine Keeler" - UK No. 56
1995 - "Something to Miss" - UK No. 57
and that's all she wrote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Trouble:

hate that exclusive private show thing that NY loves. hate it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am sphere:

Senseless Things had a release on Epic in the US (thus the +1) and it was actually pretty good in a speedy pop-punk way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am ausmanx:

private shows by bands like blur are the height of pretension and it more or less sums them up, really. why on earth reform? oh, that's right...
Avatar 10:35am d¢ pät:

what trouble said about Mekons. Langford is HILARIOUS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Polyus:

I would not want to attend a private show that would have me as an audience member.
Avatar 10:36am Rev. Turnip Druid:

seitan is teh awesomes.
Avatar 10:36am Rev. Turnip Druid:

and yes. Safari makes it very difficult to deliberately type "teh"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am sphere:

auto-correct is the devil.
  10:37am fredr:

Nice to hear you've been to Piacenza Trouble!
My grandpa was born there. We go every couple of years. Nice to stay away from the tourists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Ken From Hyde Park:

Capybaras and 60% of large herbivores likely to become extinct, said a depressing report yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

60% of those species, I meant to say.
Avatar 10:42am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I have a feeling that most of the audience members who were in attendance for Blur were probably just being born when they were in the height of Britpop stardom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Brian in UK:

Hello trouble and sensation seekers everywhere.

@ausmanx so Damon Albion is not the son of god.
Avatar 10:43am d¢ pät:

cool, this Polnareff tune came pre-starred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Brian in UK:

@sphere auto correct is the gerbil.
Avatar 10:43am d¢ pät:

@trouble you should play Love Me by the Phantom after this.
Avatar 10:45am d¢ pät:

Always good to hear Michel Polnareff and Sinn Sisamouth in one show!
  11:09am sugarwolf:

I am at work now so next week I will post links to the Dutronc clips I was mentioning this weekend. I found one of baby Thomas and his parents!
  11:11am SeanG:

Do the Snake!
  11:15am Mark:

Oh that Panda Bear!
  11:17am Mark:

If FMU had a chart, this Panda Bear record would be pretty close to the top--Dengue Fever, too! We'd have a very, very cool chart. Who else has Captain Beefheart and Sun Ra in the heavy rotation? Be proud of yourselves, FMU-ers. You do weird so wonderfully!
Avatar 11:18am d¢ pät:

That Panda Bear is pretty wild.
  11:21am Mark:

This dude is so confident going for that note. I'd chicken out.
Avatar 11:24am d¢ pät:

ah, that's what makes a good singer, Mark. Gotta have the balls to go for the notes. Personally, I'm with you. If you waiver, you can't hit it right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am common:

i have failed trying to hit notes. eeeesh.
  11:27am Mark:

He went for it TWICE, Pat. (How do I make an umlaut?) The second time was even bigger. Like, oh, you thought I got lucky hitting that note? Listen to this, mother***er--I'll it it and I'll HOLD it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Priscilla:

You guys crack me up
  11:29am Mark:

I don't want to be a total kiss-ass, but this is a REALLY great set, Trouble!
Avatar 11:29am d¢ pät:

yeah, just to show us he could do it twice. Funny. I can hold down the ä key and then I get a list of alternate characters to choose from. Otherwise, just search for it and copy/paste.
  11:29am Mark:

In fairness, I don't hand out compliments willy-nilly. When I'm not digging something, I just sort of lurk quietly.

Avatar 11:31am d¢ pät:

Mark is right again. I have absolutely no reason to feel good (especially based on my first comments today) but man I feel LIKE A HUNDRED BUCKS thanks to trouble...
  11:31am Mark:

Trouble, don't be offended if I go quiet--that doesn't necessarily mean I don't like what you're doing. Perhaps I had to visit the restroom. Or perhaps I'm dead. Here is my umlaut, thanks to the right Rev.: ¨
Avatar 11:33am βrian:

A good example of diacritical thinking, Mark.
  11:33am Mark:

Sometimes I feel like the DJs are afraid to play anything too beautiful, like we'll think they're sissies or something. But Trouble don't care. She'll just throw down one beautiful melody after another--deal with it!
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

And freezes?
  11:35am Mark:

I had to look that one up, Brian. I'm .000000000001% smarter. Although I probably had to bump some info from the hard drive to make room for the definition of "diacritical"--like my phone number or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- in my trademark gauche manner - I say Trouble has good taste that tastes good.
...It's as if WFMU programs were a line or small neighborhood of really bitchin' cafes/clubs - open @ different times - distinct places where very special kinds of music & culture & company thrive out of the glaring light of the mainstream...
  11:36am Jason:

This song REALLY reminds me of a record called The Collective Star : Music of the Mantric Wave Vol. II.
Avatar 11:44am d¢ pät:
