Avatar 10:20am Joe McG:

@Dobalina: You said it! @bobdoes: Not a bad idea! I love Saboten!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Greg from Bloomfield:

Avatar 10:24am Joe McG:

@Greg: I love the idea of "love tapping" another car! I think I'll go raise my insurance and have some fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am highlowe:

@Greg: love tapping...: )
Avatar 10:28am bobdoesthings:

I just imagined an impossible scenario of love tapping a car to try to get wfmu in better...an outraged driver gets out and marches over to your car.. you just point to the radio dial and his anger instantly dissipates into wfmu love and the two of you giggle with wfmu delight and all is forgiven.
  10:28am Will:

Lord, take a look at this hard working playlist.
Avatar 10:28am Joe McG:

@bobdoesthings: Bob, you are a romantic at heart.
Avatar 10:29am Marcel M:

@Joe: You don't have love tap insurance?!?!

@Bob: Remember when we tried to love tap a certain friend back in the day and it was more like a love slam? He was not amused!
Avatar 10:30am Polyus:

@Cecile, I always have fun. It's kind of silly and earnest, but it's the one day where everyone is happy and nice to each other. Plus a friend of mine on the route has a big party every year, so we can watch from his front yard with drinks in hand. Supposed to rain Sunday, though.
Avatar 10:31am bobdoesthings:

@marcel... Was it Jack? I sorta remember..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am steve:

wow, Deerhoof has certainly borrowed some style from that band
Avatar 10:31am Marcel M:

@Bob: hehe yes it was. We dinged the back of his car a little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am sugarwolf:

There are certain lights on my drive to work where the reception gets bad. In some spots I get the Christian music station playing :(
Avatar 10:35am d¢ pät:

Derby Day is more fun. Because everyone is drunk on bourbon.
Avatar 10:35am Polyus:

Wow, haven't heard this Icicle Works song since it was new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am highlowe:

@sugarwolf It happens to me all the time with Christian radio intertwining and messing with the airwaves. The guy who ran a red light and hit me told me he would pray for me...I'm fine btw...nothing a chiropractor won't cure...but i'm gonna pray that the dude stops running red lights : )
  10:42am Patrick:

"The Gaz" is a translation of the name of the Czech band Plyn, who, because they were banned by the government, changed their name to Dybbuk in 1983. Dybbuk eventually morphed into Zuby Nehty (featuring the same four core members), and played at WFMU in 2010.

Avatar 11:26am Cecile:

wow great soul rock covers here Joe
  11:26am SeanG:

this is mahvelous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am doctorjazz:

Joe, you're killing me.
Avatar 11:26am PKNY:

@Joe - I got the idea for next year's marathon premium for you: "Making the Songs You're Sick Of Brand New Again!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Bronwyn Bishop:

All my Elton records come from the Salvation Army in Quakertown PA. Which is the best way to buy them I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Though, I think covering Van is Soul covering Soul, bit of cheating...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am highlowe:

@joe the listener slayer!
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@PKNY: Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am common:

joe, all! happy thursday...i wish

Avatar 11:30am V Priceless:

yo common! Bowie hangover? ; )
Avatar 11:31am Cecile:

I still like her version of Grapevine better than Marvin's. Even though Marvin's is amazing.
Swag For Life Member 11:31am BarbR:

Gladys!! You are taking me back to growing up in Detroit in the 70's!
  11:31am Jackie Blue:

Loving all the covers!
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

make that the whole state of Michigan, and I am down with that statement BarbR.
Avatar 11:33am Cecile:

Oooh, for a twist, Bob Seger did a killer version of Ike and Tina's Nutbush City Limits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Bronwyn Bishop:

I <3 Gladys
  11:34am frenchee:

I like your alt-universes, Joe.
Swag For Life Member 11:34am BarbR:

I second the Seger, Cecile!
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

@frenchee: :)
Avatar 11:34am Sem Chumbo:

New McGasko theme song: *Soul Man* :=D
Avatar 11:34am Cecile:

someone, and not Rick Rubin or the Anti- label needs to get her doing a new record. Maybe Mark Ronson.
Avatar 11:35am Rev. Turnip Druid:

never Rick Rubin.
also: 'mornin, troops.
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

Her autobiography broke my heart with its meanness, but I still love Betty LaVette's singing - she does a great Heart of Gold
Avatar 11:37am totallybiased:

Spanky Wilson has some great covers as you prob know.
Avatar 11:37am Joe McG:

@Cecile: We may hear from Bettye at some point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am MD:

Cool version! Thanks Joe!
Swag For Life Member 11:37am Ralphine:

Merry Clayton reminds me that I've been meaning to rewatch the movie 20 Feet from Stardom.
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

Betty made the Who cry. That's something.
  11:38am frenchee:

@Cecile, that is really saying something.
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

Avatar 11:39am V Priceless:

Sweet Bam Alahomie!
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

this is the best version ever. period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am MD:

is it CSA Day???
  11:40am Cooh John:

Nice pairing of Sweet Home Alabama and Southern Man
Avatar 11:41am d¢ pät:

Didn't know there was a best version, huh.
Avatar 11:41am Cecile:

crop share association?
Avatar 11:41am PKNY:

Swamp Dogg - stealing "Sweet Home Alabama" away from Kid Rock and cleaning it up. Now you need to find a soul cover of "Werewolves of London" to finish the job.
Swag For Life Member 11:42am Ralphine:

MD, if you mean Confederate Memorial Day, that was a few days ago.
Avatar 11:42am Cecile:

SHA is great the first 10 ten times you hear it. Then you never need to hear it again. I have heard it 1990 more times than I need. But the Dogg is making it fresh.
Avatar 11:42am d¢ pät:

PKNY-just what I was thinking. I was in a group once that did the mashup.
Avatar 11:42am Cecile:

does someone do a soul cover of Randy Newman's My Old Kentucky Home?
  11:43am Daniel:

Powerful set. Seems nearly to say something pivotal about the songs being covered. Something that could make domesticated animals spontaneously dance in the streets.
Avatar 11:43am PKNY:

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). We just got our first veggie basket from ours this week.
Avatar 11:43am Brian in UK:

Wonder what Smashy & Nicey would make of this. Ask BTO.
Avatar 11:44am Cecile:

hahahhah, PKNY. great minds.
Avatar 11:45am PKNY:

Oh shit, I heard this version of "Down By the River" from Oliver Wang's blog years ago, you can front on steel drum bands that bring the funk.
Avatar 11:45am Wilson K:

How are they gonna handle the 16-bar one note solo?!?! THE SUSPENSE
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

@Cecile: One doesn't come to mind, but if you find one, let me know! Several soul artists did "Let's Burn Down the Cornfield," though (Lou Rawls, Nolan Porter, etc.).
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

I think top 40 radio is more culturally/racially integrated than it's been in a long time. However, it's not at all diverse in terms of styles. That's the difference between now and the 60s.
Avatar 11:45am totallybiased:

Spanky Wilson's "Sunshine Of Your Love" & "Light My Fire" are about as Soul/Classic Rock as you can get. Great versions both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am doctorjazz:

Saw Neil on the Bruce Springsteen tribute, man, he still remembers how to rock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am highlowe:

swaying to the murder ballad!
  11:47am frenchee:

I just startled my cubemates by LOLing to the "Down by the River" cover....and general Neily goodness
Avatar 11:47am Cecile:

another thing is the seriousness these artists are approaching these covers. Yeah, it might not be their idea, but by God, they're gonna sing it like they wrote it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am highlowe:

steel drum???? Contact high....
Avatar 11:48am PKNY:

I gotta add the Dutch Rhythm record to my 'look for' list, nothing but great cover songs listed, and what outfits!

Avatar 11:48am Cecile:

I think pisstake punk covers were necessary back in the day, but now there are just too many "stunt covers" for my liking.
Avatar 11:48am Cecile:

I love steel drum and these guys are amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am ChrisB.:

This set would make a great compilation disc. Hear that go-getting indie labels?
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

I remember this song! I hate this song, but he makes it good.
Avatar 11:50am bobdoesthings:

damnnn loving some of these covers.. esp. this syl johnson.. killing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am sphere:

If you have a chance to hear Junior Parker's "Tomorrow Never Knows," do it. That cover is amazing.
Avatar 11:50am Cecile:

this organ player is EVERYTHING.
Swag For Life Member 11:51am BarbR:

Organ solo! Giving me chills!
Avatar 11:51am PKNY:

@sphere - Junior's version of "Taxman" on the same record is super ill as well.
Avatar 11:51am totallybiased:

ChrisB. The licensing would be a complete nightmare. Dozens of publishers for huge tunes. Mad $$$ for publishing. The ONLY way you could pull it off is an MFN step-deal and that even would be tough with so many a-list writers.
  11:52am Daniel:

re: the organ player: +1.
Avatar 11:52am Cecile:

maybe it could be a charity project with royalties going to a good cause.
  11:52am Brendan:

Thanks for a great show Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am sphere:

thanks PKNY :)
Avatar 11:53am totallybiased:

Cecile. Yes, that's another route. Still have to track down all the writers, their shares, their approvals, their publishers or administrators, negotiate, mechanical licenses, etc.
Avatar 11:53am Brian in UK:

Any of these covers come out before the originals?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am highlowe:

Thank you Joe!!!...@Cecile hope you feel better! See u all next week : )
Avatar 11:54am Joe McG:

@Brian: I don't think so, but I might be wrong!
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

true, biased.
And I'm not the one to do it.
But the one who perseveres will have done some great work.
Avatar 11:55am PKNY:

It's Blowfly's sane and much-less-profane alter-ego!
Avatar 11:55am bobdoesthings:

thanks joe!!
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

thanks, highlowe!
Avatar 11:55am slugluv1313:

SO loving this soulful set! i think i like these versions better than the original "classic rock" versions :)
surely someone else has already mentioned it -- how about Charles Bradley's amazing version of "Changes"? *chills*
Avatar 11:55am Sem Chumbo:

Eight stars in a row, feel like a cartoon character just hit on the head, the stars going round and round. Thanks, Joe. See ya later.
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

slug, I was going to say that, but then again Fabio might just play it. He plays it a lot.
Avatar 11:56am Polyus:

Can't believe this is Blowfly himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am doctorjazz:

Great show, now on to the Stream...
Avatar 11:56am V Priceless:

thanks for a fun show, Joe! You da man!
Avatar 11:57am PKNY:

@slugluv1313 - cosign, Charles' version of "Changes" is the best cover I've heard in recent years.
Avatar 11:57am Brian in UK:

Nice one Joe, back refreshed and keeping everyone on their toes.
Avatar 11:57am Joe McG:

Hope you guys had fun, I could do this all day! Maybe I'll do a special show or premium some day. Anyway, thanks for listening and commenting and I'll catch you next week...in MAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Greg from Bloomfield:

Above and beyond today, Joe—thanks much!
Avatar 11:58am PKNY:

I mentioned Oliver Wang earlier, he had put out a few volumes of fully-licensed soul cover comps. Here's a link to one:

Avatar 11:58am bobdoesthings:

from "I can't hide" to "I get high" ... nice..
Avatar 11:58am Wilson K:

Oh man... Al Greene slays this. Familiar with this version and I've always thought it killed the original.
Avatar 11:58am Cecile:

thanks, Joe. this show was a good tonic for the troops.
Swag For Life Member 11:58am BarbR:

Thanks Joe!! Loved it!
Avatar 11:59am Cecile:

thanks, PKNY
Avatar 11:59am Wilson K:

Well he was obviously high. On Al's Green.
Avatar 11:59am PKNY:

Oops, I think that volume actually has some originals, the second one was covers, though:

Avatar 11:59am Claw!:

Thanks, Joe!
Great to have you back. :)
  12:00pm SeanG:

thanks Joe
