This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

First come, last served.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Gary:

Avatar 6:56pm Flash Strap:

Howdy there, walking dream.
  6:57pm walking daydream:

Hi. Long-time listener, first time caller.
Avatar 6:58pm Flash Strap:

Well, it's nice to finally hear your voice, so to speak.
Avatar 6:58pm Flash Strap:

Oh, and Gary, you'll be sorely missed this eve!
Avatar 7:00pm ndbob:

Heya Evan and everyone!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Heya Bob!
  7:07pm walking daydream:

Stellar realty seemed to be booming back in the day.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

How're we doin' this evening, all?
Avatar 7:08pm ndbob:

Doing OK - chilly today
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

yeah, here too. Spring is a fickle thing
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

"Lucifer calls his legion from the hillside – sadly goes the wind on its way to Haiti"
Cue jazz section, slam dunk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm SeanG:

Donovan is one groovy chap
  7:18pm ?:

At last! I listen this show live, 2 in the morning here Greece.
Avatar 7:19pm Walking Daydream:

Welcome to the land of continual sunset.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm melinda:

I <3 Donovan.
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Hello ? and happy to have you!

Hello melinda!
Avatar 7:28pm Smaro:

Hello Flashtrap! Thank you for playing Donovan tonight!
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Well, it's certainly my pleasure Smaro
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

Love the way he drops "who doth ambition shun?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm listener james from westwood:

Good evening! Been in since earlier but just settling in. Enjoying the Donovan-fest!
Confession re: "Wear Your Love Like Heaven": I first heard that song in the "Simpsons" ep where Homer begins using medical marijuana. Somehow missed hearing it all these years!
Avatar 7:32pm Smaro:

I must confess you are the source of much pleasure the last couple of months. I am a big Exotica lover, witch is a little rare taste here in Greece
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Hi James!
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Always happy to bring pleasure to a fellow exot, my Grecian comrade
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

This one is top 5 for me. Love the arrangement
Avatar 7:38pm Walking Daydream:

Here there is a sky of still-life clouds and a foreground of individual clouds snaking forward to this song.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

Sounds like a walking daydream
Avatar 7:39pm Smaro:

Looking at the photograph of the album, my mouth is dripping.. Had the chance once to listen the original album once..
Avatar 7:43pm Walking Daydream:

Anyone else notice artful similarities to The Temptation of St. Antony?
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Which album has your water running, Smaro?
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

WD: The Grunberg? I agree.
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

The lyrics of this song are INTENSE
Avatar 7:51pm Walking Daydream:

Well, the closer you look the more there is to see. I suppose that's how artists stay relevant.
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

ok last one from Flower to a Garden. On to new frontiers
Avatar 7:53pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 7:54pm Smaro:

It is HMS Flashsrtap. Such amazing artwork!
Avatar 7:54pm Walking Daydream:

The waters are clear. Let's do it!
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

I'm already getting flashbacks and I just got here
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

"old men in tweed find study there"
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Glad to see you Hyde! Umiliani show coming soon, I realized I have a LOT of sorting to do. Might have to be a 2-parter
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

there sure is plenty of good Umiliani...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Uncle Michael:

I will break cheese.
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Uncle Michael! Have some wine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

I think I first heard Bridget St. John sing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's it lightin' incense...
Avatar 8:04pm glenn:

will the intergalactic laxative make an appearance?
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Sadly, no, Glenn. It didn't quite make the cut
Avatar 8:06pm Walking Daydream:

The back and forth of Pebble and the Man took me straight to Ween's The Mollusk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...fine guitar-player incidentally...
Avatar 8:06pm glenn:

Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Ah, I'm so sorry Glenn!
Avatar 8:11pm hyde:

i never get tired of this one
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

Are you consolable, my friend?

You know, what's funny about Intergalactic Laxative is, I have a radio copy from some flea market that has extensive handwritten notes griping about how inappropriate for radio it is because it says "SHIT". Another Dj has scrawled next to it "IS GOD GOING TO SEND DONATION TO HELL MOMMAY"
Avatar 8:13pm coelacanth:

aloha Flash Strap and Explorers.
i frickin forgot -all Donovan!
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Me either Hyde. I mean, there's no way I would play Mellow Yellow, it's so overcooked at this point – but this one is invincible. It never ages.
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

Hell-O Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

Hello RRN63!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Uncle Michael:

Is this from before or after Cosmic Wheels?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Uncle Michael:

Wait, this is ON Cosmic Wheels?
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

This is from Cosmic Wheels, precisely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Uncle Michael:

But...but...it IS Cosmic Wheels...sideways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Uncle Michael:

Here we go.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

What do you mean sideways? I'm piqued, in terms of curiosity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- hear the influence on Marc Bolan...
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

Oh I agree, RRN63. And vice versa
Avatar 8:23pm coelacanth:

-or from...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Uncle Michael:

The two songs are the same...only not the same. I figured the first was something obscure and earlier, recycled as Cosmic Wheels. It's built on the same hook.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

Yeah, I agree. I also think there's some degree of referencing Season of the Witch. Like, Most and Donovan get back together and sort of nod towards one of their earliest triumphs. It's far inferior, but great fun
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

This one is pretty gnarly
Avatar 8:32pm glenn:

the blue jays are killing the orioles again. i'm consoled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Uncle Michael:

What a great cover.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Man, it really is. It really brings out the jazz in this incarnation of Deep Purple, too. Particularly during the keys solo
Avatar 8:50pm Walking Daydream:

"Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves."
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

That line is cribbed from Jean Jamin, by the way. In describing the College de Sociologie.
Avatar 8:55pm Walking Daydream:

I do like it. Given what is actually behind the face, what we show, it seems like there should be some thin portal. Almost like there must be some intermediary between what we show and what we actually or physically are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I read Donovan's autobio., is what it is see; he didn't give a toss about Genres - mixed them unselfconsciously - way ahead of the curve in that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Home from work, tra la tra la!
Avatar 8:58pm coelacanth:

i arrived late and then there has been too much commotion here. i will revisit this episode (as well as others, which i've been doing!)
Thank you...Excellent selections!
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! So glad to have you back in my arms!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- a weird thing is how Mickie Most worked for him, but not the yARdbiRds...
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

ciao coelo
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

yeah, didn't he produce the worst Yardbirds album? I've never really gotten too into them, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- typical thing: pull in the wrong Producer so you can have 'hits'...
Avatar 9:03pm coelacanth:

ps! (yardbirds are over-rated because of the personnel.)
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

@WD: a great deal of that sentiment concerns how the Other is really ourselves, that all desire is for the Other, and that the eye of anthropology/ethnology is not to be aimed exclusively at the (fictive) "savage," but also at "our" own institutions. It harks from a time when anthropology was actually new as a discipline and very closely tied to Surrealist activity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Uncle Michael:

I wish he'd done more with the Jeff Beck Group. I also wish there was an unreleased 30-minute take of Barabajagal to unearth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Doug Schulkind:

I'll never ever leave again, Flash Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh ! ! I love the yardies...
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Oh, Douglass! Kiss me you fool! Hold me and never let me go!
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

Yeah it's a shameful blind spot. Gotta do my Yardwork
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth:

sorry! i like them! 'some songs i Love, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Shoot! Somehow I was thinking you were on till 10pm (ET). Oh well, at least I'll be able to get to work on my show an hour earlier.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Well, Doug, I think I'm going quite long this evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- not just the yARdies' guitarists - the tunes, the influence on GarageRawk, Psych, Blues/GuitarRawk (yeah that)...I do diddle guitar, tho' - & w/ the Stones they taught us to play Blues - they really did.
Avatar 9:09pm hyde:

love the bonus content!
Avatar 9:10pm coelacanth:

Rabbit, i'm going to pull out my yardbirds albums when i get back home tomorrow. it's been a while.
Avatar 9:11pm Walking Daydream:

So our own institutions may not be known to us and may need to be rediscovered? Or are you saying we've lost the romance for ourselves and need to romanticize ourselves the way we do the "sophisticated savage," to enhance desirability? It seems like Surrealism could apply to anything new as another term for sensory overload, which I feel you capture well in your collages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm so glad you pronounce it dzanch. That's how he pronounces it. His children, however, pronounce it yanch. Whaddatheyknow?!
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:16pm glenn:

what inspired this donovan show anyway?
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

I can't stop listening to Donovan, is what. Like I really really just can't STOP.
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

WD: Perhaps that we need to recognize that the savage is a construct of our own making, and one which potentially offers a dark mirror revealing a better version of our self – at least, one more authentic in its expression of desire. And that we also must turn the merciless eye of the ethnologist onto our own rituals, and observe them as an explorer would observe a cannibal feast in a goona-goona B-movie
Avatar 9:22pm glenn:

i guess we should be thankful you just can't stop listening to celine dion, then.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

You have never to fear of that, glenn.
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

This is one of the most subtle, striking Vietnam songs, I think
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

I mean, subtle in its tone. it's obviously about Nam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Celine Dion... now THAT'S exotica.
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

Something crazy about Celine Dion: I lived in Mexico for two years, and went to about six or seven little circuses. Some Portuguese, some local, some Chinese, some South American. ALL of them had a part of the clown routine that involved the clowns playing "My heart will go on", usually on harmonica, or harmonica-fingered gloves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm listener james from westwood:

Couldn't help myself: Cued up the Billy Batts beatdown from "GoodFellas" on YouTube and killed the video's sound to let "Atlantis" play over it unaccompanied by dialogue. Two stone-cold classics.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

No doubt
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:35pm hyde:

best rock song about Kipling ever
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

2 true
Avatar 9:38pm coelacanth:

-so glad you're going over. things finally settled down here and i can listen.
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

"Leave genitals at the door"
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

Oh, how grand C! Got about 20 minutes left, I'd say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Doug Schulkind:

What a treat!
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

@WD: a belated, humble thanks for the kind word regarding my collages. Thanks for looking at them, they are much of my life.
Avatar 9:44pm coelacanth:

Simply Grand! Splendid!
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

Wish I knew who the gal on this is
Avatar 9:46pm Walking Daydream:

Oh, yes. I'd put collages up there with watercolor. It looks simple, but actual execution is more difficult, like Japanese plant arranging.
I also wish I was a little less spent from work because I do enjoy discussing philosophy and symbols.
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

Any other time, my friend. I'm here every week, you know where to find me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm melinda:

This is my 1st time listening and I've really enjoyed non-stop Donovan. I will check out future shows.
Avatar 9:56pm coelacanth:

Flash, the vox may be Lulu.
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

I'm so glad, Melinda!
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

Oh, shit! That would make so much sense!
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

Lulu is such a cool lady in her way
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth:

i can dig Lulu. i sure did as a child!
Avatar 10:01pm coelacanth:

i'm having trouble verifying that suggestion. i'll keep looking.
Avatar 10:03pm Flash Strap:

It sounds a little loose and wild for Lulu's usual vocal style, just going on memory, but she did hang with M. Most and that crowd, from Scott Walker to Bowie, so she would have been available and definitely down
Avatar 10:06pm coelacanth:

okay, my first stop i overlooked it...on wikipedia it says "duet with Lulu", so at least someone else thinks so!
...i thought maybe it was from her tv show, but there was no applaud at the end,was there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...still tuned in, eyes been elsewhere...
Avatar 10:07pm Flash Strap:

no, but they may have recorded it in anticipation of doing the show. That's so cool, I'm so glad you tracked it down.
Avatar 10:09pm hyde:

thanks for the trip down Donovan lane!
Avatar 10:09pm coelacanth:

This program has been extraordinary. Thanks again.
goodnight or till then,all.
Avatar 10:13pm Walking Daydream:

"There all is order and beauty,
Luxury, peace, and pleasure."
See you all at the next audio club meeting!
Avatar 10:13pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for listening, friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Doug Schulkind:

All this extra Explorers Room is what's known as hurdy-gurdying the lily.
Avatar 10:16pm Flash Strap:

hee hee
Avatar 10:18pm Flash Strap:

Ok folks! Thanks for going so deep and long with me. Sweetest of dreams, my sellers of stars. Good night.
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth:
