Avatar 9:02pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, all.
Avatar 9:03pm cory:

hi dave and all
Avatar 9:04pm cory:

wish the wife was home to dance with
  9:04pm Carmichael:

Time for the waltz number already? Heya Dave.
  9:05pm doca:

Hey, Mr. Dave Mandl, stopping by to say hello and congratulate you on that Moondog piece for wire, excellent reading
Avatar 9:06pm Dave Mandl:

Hey folks.
@Carmichael: It's always waltz time!
@doca: Merci beaucoup.
  9:07pm JakeGould:

Nothing like a decent accordion piece… Maybe a decent vibraphone piece but what do I know?
  9:07pm doca:

Maybe a decent tuba solo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm BLCKDGRD:

I'd like to request some Lou Donaldson please.
Avatar 9:10pm Dave Mandl:

@doca: Many tuba solos are indecent.
@BLCKDGRD: You've been on Twitter, I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm BLCKDGRD:

Work with me, Dave.
Avatar 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

@BLCKDGRD: I have just the thing for you.
  9:11pm doca:

The tuba is a nasty musical instrument
  9:11pm JakeGould:

@doca: NO TUBA! One time I was in the Broadway-Lafayette street subway station and heard what sounded like a seal dying in the subway. It was a musician very sincerely trying to entertain commuters with his tuba playing. EVERYBODY covered their ears until he stopped. It was so sad and annoying. The guy could play well… But in a subway station with those acoustics? NO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm BLCKDGRD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm BLCKDGRD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sad trombone for sad tuba...
  9:14pm doca:

@JakeGould: I felt sorry for the tuba player now, but he didn't made a wise choice playing in the subway. It was unaccompanied tuba really?
  9:16pm JakeGould:

@doca: Yup. 100% just him and his tuba and a donation box. I guess the guy needed money, knew how to play tuba and decided, “Well, this is a good idea…” People did feel sorry for him because nobody told him to shut up or stop. But everyone was looking at each other in commiseration with ears covered. Ah, humanity.
  9:18pm doca:

Let me ask you guys: that online ticket service WFMU uses for Monty Hall events, does it deliver physical tickets or just e-mails them? I'll be in NYC later this month and was eager to go to that Cambodian rock night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm pacific standard simon:

What!? Did I miss some hot tuba licks?! I love a good tuba solo!
Avatar 9:19pm cory:

I HAZ CHOCO BUNNY TO NOMZ... soonish, maybe
  9:20pm Carmichael:

Ok, well how about a little sousaphone then?
  9:20pm JakeGould:

@doca: Pretty sure the way Brown Paper Tickets works is via a “Will Call” list. So you buy the ticket(s), get on a list and then have to talk to someone who will have your name and info on a printed list.
  9:22pm doca:

@JakeGould: thanks! I'm actually in Brazil, so delivering the tickets to me would be a problem, though I could talk to the friend I'll be staying with to help me on this.
Avatar 9:25pm Ryab:

Dave I appreciate your effort on the playlist
Avatar 9:26pm Ryab:

Whenever I hear a a great track and there is no playlist it's just a fricken cocktease so thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm pacific standard simon:

Maybe it's a command, like 'Dog those 'faced Hermans!'
  9:27pm doca:

@Ryab: Stan's show makes me kinda mad because of it
Avatar 9:27pm Mary Wing:

Maybe there should be a "The" instead of a hyphen to a make it a statement: The Dog Faced Hermans. Dave, I'm suddenly wondering: why don't you use a music bed?
Avatar 9:28pm Ryab:

Yeah mainly referring to Stan and Bill's shows.
  9:29pm doca:

Bryce is another DJ who makes a very idiosyncratical use of the playlist, though I guess Bryce makes a very idyosincratic use of his life
Avatar 9:30pm Ryab:

Well Bryce plays things that are about as obscure or even more so as the things Jonathan plays.
Avatar 9:31pm Dave Mandl:

@Mary: I've never used bed music. I don't know, it feels like it's adding a layer between me and the listeners or something. I just don't like the way it feels (for myself).
Avatar 9:32pm Ryab:

Like I feel like Bryce listens to UbuRadio a lot because whenever I tune in it reminds me of his show.
  9:34pm HollyT:

Heya, Dave, folks
Avatar 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly.
  9:36pm doca:

Yeah Bryce probably earns a record of strangest on a strange land. I was talking to a friend of mine who started listening to WFMU and she was talking about how she gets physically extenuated after an afternoon listening to Bryce and Kurt's shows. I thought it eas interesting, how music can be physically demanding on a body level even to the listener
  9:38pm P-90:

Very nice first set Dave, by the way.
  9:38pm Charles:

I never feel like Dave needs bed music.
Avatar 9:39pm Dave Mandl:

Just an actual bed.
Avatar 9:39pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: Thanks.
Avatar 9:39pm cory:

doca, i put a lot of belief into the music body thing. there are shows i prefer to listen depending on the day/ shift i'm working. thankfully dave is one of my "home base" djs
Avatar 9:40pm Dave Mandl:

@cory: Thanks. It's a Sunday night thing, I guess.
Avatar 9:41pm Ryab:

@doca: I feel like most music I play just casually at other peoples' houses pushes them to that point, But I get the same way after a while of listening to a lot of Bryce. Not heard a show Kurt's yet.
  9:41pm JakeGould:

@doca: “I thought it eas interesting, how music can be physically demanding on a body level even to the listener.” Given the choice between music I might not agree with and my downstairs neighbors shouting matches, I choose music.
  9:41pm HollyT:

Or maybe it's like, there was a family whose surname was Herman (i.e. Peewee), and a dog turned to face them, and it was translated from Russian or Czech or another Slavic language that doesn't use articles. In which, case, it is perfectly correct.
Avatar 9:42pm cory:

@dave, it's the only night i know i have off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm pacific standard simon:

The perfect bed music for World of Echo, aside from "none", which Dave actually prefers, would be a barely audible Ken Nordine record.
Avatar 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: That must be it.
Avatar 9:44pm cory:

plus i know around the time of your next mic break my mojito comes home. and that adds all kinds of win
  9:45pm JakeGould:

If I ever find that subway Tuba player again, maybe I’ll offer to take him out for lunch if I can just record him—and people’s reactions to him—in the subway. This was like 10 years ago, but who knows…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar 9:47pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: No denying that.
  9:48pm doca:

@cory: yeah that body thing is not merely getting music as a soundtrack to certain patts of the day or certain days/certain weather. What I liked about her response was that it showed how much of listening is an active enterprise. Of course, there are as many types of listening as there is types of music
  9:50pm doca:

@ryab: and yeah I could probably only dj on a party attended solely by WFMU listeners.
Avatar 9:53pm cory:

hey dave, guess who just got home?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm coelacanth:

hello Dave and World of Echo.
  9:53pm P-90:

@doca: Brown Paper emails a downloadable and printable ticket just like TicketMaster does, and Monty Hall gets a list for his door. Er, its door.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm ░Ī Ҡ ℰ░::

I've often come across terrible buskers at Broadway-Lafayette.
  9:55pm doca:

Thanks, P-90!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm coelacanth:

they were Amazing!

Kossov was a guitar god!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm pacific standard simon:

More importantly, it's the beginning of baseball season.
Avatar 10:00pm Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: True. He played a lot of jazz also.
  10:01pm doca:

Thanks for the show, @Dave, nice to catch one hour live. Thanks for the conversation, people. See you later
Avatar 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

@doca: Thanks. Night!
  10:03pm andrew:

hey what was the bass slapping no drums, french vocals song?
Avatar 10:03pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: I come from a long line of baseball fans (and I used to be a big one), but I have to admit I've lost touch with it.
  10:04pm tuner fish:

That was "nous" by the visitors. It was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm pacific standard simon:

It helps if your fave team is passing through a golden age. I lost touch myself during the '90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm coelacanth:

Dave, i did not know that. i just practically cry during some of his solos in the earlier days of free...he was so passionate-like Hendrix or Allman.
...i have some homework to do,huh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm pacific standard simon:

I don't have a religion, but my ex sent me an Easter basket. Sweet.
Avatar 10:07pm Dave Mandl:

@coelcanth: I played an old Billy Cobham record a few weeks ago, and Kosoff was on it.
  10:08pm tuner fish:

Great "Blue" track. Greetings from Dallas, Dave!
Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Lonely Planet Boy:

enjoying this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm George of Troy:

Good evening, Dave. Loving the sounds tonight.
Avatar 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

@tuner: Welcome. I was in Texas a month or so ago. Austin, not Dallas.
Avatar 10:11pm bobdoesthings:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm pacific standard simon:

This track made the dogs bark!
Avatar 10:12pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, bob. Also hello George, Lonely, Jake, RRN63...
  10:13pm Carmichael:

This sounds like the German version of the Hampton Grease Band.
Avatar 10:14pm bobdoesthings:

hey Dave. thanks to you I've switched to cream cheese on matzo instead of butter. thank you.
  10:14pm JakeGould:

@Ike: There are decent buskers. There’s a vibraphone player who lives in Bay Ridge, plays in the station here and then heads to Atlantic Avenue and plays there as well. Really, really talented guy.
Avatar 10:14pm Dave Mandl:

@bob: My work here is done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Ike:

@Jake, oh yeah, don't get me wrong, most NYC buskers are decent, good, or even great. Just not at B'way-Lafayette!
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Ike: The people on the L platform at Union Square can be pretty bad. The ones who bang on plastic garbage pails non-stop.
  10:20pm Carmichael:

Dave, if Bryce is listening he may want to record them for his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm pacific standard simon:

What's bad about "Camels hit hippies"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm coelacanth:

Avatar 10:25pm joeray:

Good evening, Dave. You can play anything uncensored after 10:00, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm pacific standard simon:

Good thing you're not DJing in a subway, eh?
Avatar 10:29pm Dave Mandl:

@joeray: It's not really clear. I like to play it completely safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm ░Ī Ҡ ℰ░::

@joeray, you can play "indecent" things after 10, but not "obscene" things. But what the hell does that mean? NOBODY KNOWS! The FCC won't tell anybody. Ah, America.
Avatar 10:34pm bobdoesthings:

I haven't been keeping check, has Dave mispronounced all the artists names tonight like he promised on twitter?
Avatar 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

@bob: Only some.
  10:38pm Carmichael:

Nice Donaldson tune here, Dave.
  10:38pm The Easter Bunny:

Dear Dave, this is the Easter Bunny. Per your request, I have left a chocolate peanutbutter easter egg on the ledge outside the front door. Hope you receive it. It's possible someone else has taken it and eaten it already. Happy Easter!
Avatar 10:38pm bobdoesthings:

oh boo, mispronounce them ALL I say! .. or ya know.. whatever.
Avatar 10:39pm Dave Mandl:

@TEB: Really? Are you the one I buzzed in a little while ago?
  10:39pm The Easter Bunny:

Yes, but the door didn't open. I just left it outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm pacific standard simon:

No one's going to eat a mysterious brown object left outdoors in New Jersey.
Avatar 10:43pm joeray:

@Ike: I've always considered the only thing that is not allowable with regard to the FCC's "Safe Harbor" is if you're playing material of a totally sexual/porn nature... I agree,it is quite a vague ruling.
Avatar 10:43pm Dave Mandl:

@TEB: Got it! You are the greatest!
  10:44pm Carmichael:

Simon, it sounds like you've never been to New Jersey.
  10:45pm Carmichael:

  10:47pm The Easter Bunny:

May happy thoughts and springtime flowers brighten all your Easter hours. Enjoy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm ikє:

@Dave@10:17, oh yeah. And they always seem to be there, eh? Maybe those guys pissed off a warlock and are cursed to remain on that L platform banging garbage pails 24/7 until the sun goes supernova and swallows the Earth.

It's delicious.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm pacific standard simon:

@Carmichael - Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm coelacanth:

the shoe antelope only comes during marathon time. you have to wait another year now.
  11:06pm JakeGould:

Yo, Easter Bunny… Maybe you can drop off the cash contents of an ATM at WFMU HQ? Thanks. Bye.
Avatar 11:07pm bobdoesthings:

everyone should check out Krause's chocolates in Fairview and Patterson (not the one on Rt 17 in Paramus - that's not the real Krause!) . My family has been getting their chocolate and candy for years, top notch stuff. my only complaint is they changed their jelly bean recipe this past year or two.. not the same.. but the chocolate it the best.
  11:08pm JakeGould:

@Coelacanth: I believe in the Catholic church, shoes are magically repaired on “All Soles Day.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Ĩkє:

@Jake@11:06, you want the ATM Fairy (or Bill Murray), not the Easter Bunny. Everybody knows the Easter Bunny never deals in cash.
  11:11pm JakeGould:

@Ike: I just signed up for Venmo. Can the Easter Bunny do me a solid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm coelacanth:

bob, i don't know if it's the same company, but there's one in my town, and it's very good.

Jake- Haha! ..either way Dave has to wait!
  11:14pm JakeGould:

@bobdoesthings: Funny you mention jelly beans. I really would like to know of a simple and non-organic brand of jelly bean that is not made with high fructose corn syrup but isn’t like a gajillion weird flavors like Jelly Belly. Like those jelly beans at a drug store… But a slightly better version. I want that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm pacific standard simon:

Passing along the <rimshot> to JakeGould @ 11:08
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

Now I'm wondering what the health food store across from where I work would have
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth:

it's a challenge to find good candy without corn syrup.
my experience with hell-food store jelly beans is that 1/2 of them still have corn syrup, and the other 1/2 has no flavor.
Avatar 11:19pm bobdoesthings:

@coelacanth - well I know the only legit Krause's (According to my mother and Aunt) is the one in Fairview (1st) and the other one in Patterson (2nd) and the one of Rt 17 was a relative or something. not the legit german home-made candy.. but that could just be my crazy family babbling..
@jake- If only Krause's jelly beans were as I recall as a kid.. they were intoxicatingly perfect.. new ones are good too.. but not what I recall..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Andrew Waterloo:

yah, it's hard to get excited about their bean based cupcakes.
Avatar 11:21pm bobdoesthings:

I just looked at the bag of jelly beans my ma' gave me tonight... corn syrup is an ingredient in the new recipe... I don't recall if it was in their old recipe... all that said.. still way better than mass-manufacutred store bought jelly beans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm coelacanth:

bob, i know they're not the same company, but both websites say they began in 1929!
my guess is there was a rift in the family,or company, and there then was born 2 (at least?) krause's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm coelacanth:

...Damn, i wish i had some chocolate!
Avatar 11:31pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Good chance of it.
Avatar 11:31pm bobdoesthings:

@coelacanth - yup.. I didn't want to get into it.. mainly cause I dont care much.. but my ma' explained that they split ways a while back.. my family is loyal to the fairview and patterson places.. haha
Avatar 11:33pm bobdoesthings:

but yeah.. same family.. split ways. you nailed it. good detective work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm pacific standard simon:

Maybe one side supported the Bund and the other didn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm coelacanth:

...the 2 up here (upstate-ish) are not the same company as any of those in jersey...but they they may be using the same recipes.
Avatar 11:36pm bobdoesthings:

shit.. now I want to venture out and get samples of chocolate from each place.. I think both side's continued to use the same logo too..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm pacific standard simon:

The way you guys are dreaming about chocolate and candy, that's how Easter has been making me think about eggs. All day long, I've been longing for tomagoyaki, a Japanese omelette. So much so that I put in an order for a special rectangular frying pan so I can make it myself.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

Ah, more free jazz. Niiice.
  11:54pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth: I do find a few of organic jelly beans to be acceptable. But I don’t care for the rutabaga and carrot coloring. If someone could just make some of those with proper bright coloring like what you get in a real store we’d all be happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:
