or Viking banjo!
Avatar 3:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm not sure what a goth banjo'd be, but we got plenty more banjo to come, folks. after that, accordion.

No banjos, but Claw Hammer would fit in nicely, by which I mean they wouldn't.

accordion? it IS good friday.
Avatar 3:26pm V Priceless:

of course, lot of swell banjo on those early Strawbs records. I think Dave Cousins may have been the fastest picker in the UK back then.
  3:29pm Hod:

Bela Fleck looked to be the John McLaughlin of the banjo a few years back until he went crab-core.
  3:30pm Dean:

Joe's been a heap o' trouble lately, but I think it goes too far to outright ban Joe.
Avatar 3:33pm Jeff:

I really like the theme song Gangstagrass did for the TV show Justified.

When you go poking around in their albums, though, they can be a bit sweary for air.
  3:35pm i k e:

Hot dang. FMU can always use more banjo.

Avatar 3:36pm glenn:

as much as i'm an advocate for swearies, they get a bit tiresome after a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Caryn:

If we're talking banjo, I'll always root for "Journey of the Sorcerer" because 1) it's great, 2) it's the only bearable Eagles track and 3) the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy connection makes it even greater.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm common:

hey kurt and all! i missed vp's thing, dammit!
Avatar 4:17pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i was thinking "can one song be a tribute?" then i thought, "yes, one song can be a tribute."
Avatar 4:27pm V Priceless:

hey common! No music was harmed - it was simply a few words of gratitide from my newly-adopted Miniature Minotaur himself! : )
Avatar 4:28pm V Priceless:

tude...I say..tude, that is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Caryn:

I missed the start of the show. Has the playlist been adopted yet? I'm asking because I'm unsure whether the "This space has been intentionally left blank" thing is a sign that there's been no adoption yet or an artistic statement.
Avatar 4:32pm Kurt Gottschalk:

no adoption. sadface. but as you probably sussed, vp adopted me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Caryn:

I think people are intimidated by the thought of following Minnesota Jeff's stellar gif record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm common:

ah, i see, vp. hey, my boss just called and offered me my shit job back. i turned it down. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Avatar 4:37pm Kurt Gottschalk:

you're probably right, caryn. but someone needs to step up and make it their own!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Caryn:

I briefly contemplated adoption, but all my art is in non-digital form, so there goes that. Considering the success of the Marathon gif, I'm kinda hoping Greg will end up as the adopter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm common:

i gotta learn how to make gifs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Carmichael:

Hi Kurt and Friday people. I loves me some banjo. Was listening last night to that strange Seattle band Pretty Green. They have lots of banjo, if you can stand the guy's lead vocal.
  4:48pm P-90:

@common: Way to go! Tell the Man where he can stick it! When Kenzo figures out how we can buy each other drinks over this gizmo, I owe you one...
  4:49pm Dean:

Damn, missed a ton of good stuff. I heard Holshauser, Bennink & Moore at the Freight around the time of the Ramboy recording. Was splendid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm common:

thanks p-90 and absotutely!

Gianluigi Trovesi (clarinets) and Gianni Coscia (accordion) is a FANTASTIC accordion record on ECM.

  4:56pm JakeGould:

Hey there folks! Anyone here from the Pacific Northwest? NYC now has all this stupid rain. Please come and take it back.
  4:57pm Dean:

California would *love* your rain.
Avatar 4:58pm MenfussMike:

play "SHE" ;-)
  4:58pm JakeGould:

@Dean: Yeah, sorry to gloat about the rain in NYC. Also the pizza, the women, the music, the city itself… Gloating about it all.
  5:00pm Dean:

Gloat away. But the pizza, well, I'm afraid nothing beats the joint i visit in Southern California in unincorporated LA County. It is the antithesis of every species of pizza served these days. Hot out of the oven it's unbeatable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Stanley:

Nuthin' beatsa pieca pizza
  5:04pm JakeGould:

@Dean: Also you have “In and Out” burger. NYC has nothing like that. It’s all either diner burgers, fast food dreck or artisanal overwrought burgers served with something weird… Like tater tots instead of fries…
Avatar 5:05pm V Priceless:

NYC area also kicks butt in bagel superiority - it's in the wonderful water we get from those flooded towns upstate like Neversink and Bittersweet.
  5:05pm P-90:

am I the only one having stream problems via iOS app?
  5:06pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm chris:

no, all good over here
  5:08pm P-90:

In NY we have Shake Shack and a few others in the In-N-Out mode, but none of them are quite as good.
  5:08pm JakeGould:

@VPriceless: I’d say the bagels as well, but I am just old enough to remember when they were truly great. Like crusts you could lose a tooth on. Basically big circular pretzels. Ahh, the good old days. Watch this film from the good old days of 1970s bagel making. Note no protective gloves. Also ignore the yammering narrator. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 5:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ok, thanks. always good to let us know if there's problems. our tech people snap to! p-90, if it persists, lemme know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm chris:

P-90, have you killed the iOS app and restarted?

Ess-A-Bagel is the shit for bagels in NYC.
  5:10pm JakeGould:

@P-90:Yes, “Shake Shack” is the closest to “In-N-Out” but still, that is on the rare/artisanal side. I like them but burger places in California are just so consistently good. In contrast just fast food dreck here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Stanley:

@Jake - aw that's nice. F. Frederick Skitty is an old pal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm chris:

Jake, if you're ever in the area, check this place out. Its down the road from where I live... www.marinsunfarms.com... Beef, Lamb, Goat, All... oh dear god its good stuff
Avatar 5:16pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

  5:19pm JakeGould:

@chris: That looks amazing! I live in a part of Brooklyn that is a bit Middle Eastern and I think that if some kid growing up with shawarma would just come up with a decent basic burger but made with like ground shawarma meat that would be killer.
Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

burger's priest. there is no other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Caryn:

They say the best NYC bagels are ones actually made in Canada and imported there. I lack the experience to say yea or nay to this.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm chris:

you can watch the bagels being made at Ess-A-Bagel, Caryn.... mmmm, fresh bagel...
Avatar 5:21pm V Priceless:

@JakeG: thanks - that was a riot! Now I want a bagel! It also makes me miss hearing my dad say "water's ber-lin' " (he was from Bklyn, obviously).

@ Caryn: No way Canada is stealing our bagel thunder - that's a myth.
  5:22pm JakeGould:

@Caryn: You mean that “Mile End” place that imports bagels from Montreal? I lived near them and the food is not bad, but not great… Not worth going out of your way for… Especially on the bagel front.
Avatar 5:22pm glenn:

you are referring to the mighty montreal bagel, as made at fairmount bagel, and taken warm to brooklyn every morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ooo - this is good afterwerk...
Avatar 5:23pm glenn:

sorry, v. montreal bagels beat new york bagels, hands down.
Avatar 5:24pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i wouldn't wanna hafta pick a winner but montreal bages are pretty great.
Avatar 5:24pm V Priceless:

hmm glenn...now I'm curious - where can I score one here in NY for a taste comparison?
Avatar 5:24pm Kurt Gottschalk:

also i'm not allowed to disagree w/ vp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Caryn:

@glenn: that's the one, glenn!
Avatar 5:25pm V Priceless:

haha..have we established those parameters yet, Kurt?
Avatar 5:25pm glenn:

editorial freedom, kurt.
  5:25pm JakeGould:

@glenn: Importing bagels from Montreal to NYC is just not right. I still have my memories of real old school NYC bagels so tough to accept imported bagels are good. And yeah, Montreal bagels are good. But still.

Avatar 5:36pm V Priceless:

interesting, aside from the 'sweet factor', the less doughy, crispy angle of The Montreal variety does sound very nice....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Caryn:

@glenn: well, it was a documentary series focusing on different food-related things. That time it was Fairmount Bagels, and transporting them to NYC daily. I seem to remember someone like Bourdain talking about how superior Montreal bagels were to NYC ones, which pained him.
Avatar 5:36pm glenn:

i have never had a toronto bagel any where near as goodas anything from montreal. they're too big, and not dense enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Carmichael:

I think everyone named Ted must be nuts.
  5:38pm JakeGould:

Also I think the issue is not just the water, but the flour used in dough nowadays. Unless you go out of your way for better quality flour, every place in NYC nowadays uses sacks of Pillsbury crap. No disrespect to that paunchy little Doughboy, but man… That stuff is like just so close to pure sugar nowadays.
Avatar 5:38pm glenn:

bourdain's episode on quebecois cuisaine is stellar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Caryn:

Yeah, and I think one of his eps also dealt with the Montreal bagels.

glenn, Montreal and Toronto bagels are very different. I guess it depends what you grew up with. I grew up in Toronto but did appreciate the uniqueness of Montreal bagels. Great in their own way.
