I don't know how they do it. So heavy and yet so. . .euphoric, I guess. Just beautiful. I've been on a Yob vibe all week. Didn't catch much of Enslaved though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm coelacanth:

Ha! those are good responses, Claw! & d¢ pät
  1:27pm Dean:

I don't want to head too far down the path of gender relations here, but I have to respond to dc pat. Your comment implies that good information will correct bad behavior. I kinda doubt that.
Avatar 1:27pm Cecile:

If you're not dating us, just treat us like another straight guy. You wouldn't ask a guy to smile or tell them they looked pretty. Don't do that to us. If you want to strike up a conversation with a woman, comment (nicely) on what she's wearing. I have cool glasses, and a lot of people have come up to me and talked about them. That's nice.
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

But then again, I hate M-F gender games. I've been rejected by both sides for being too...much like the other.
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

which is actually a great place to be in for an observer type like me.
Avatar 1:29pm Claw!:

No need to apologize, Fellas. Y'all are alright in my book.

It's those *other* dudes that need to get that shit figured out. Guys - have a talk with that one friend (you know who he is) about unwanted approaches. They certainly don't respect us ladies enough to hear us out, but perhaps a bro-to-bro convo might get something across.
  1:29pm Alan B:

Yeah! Great show and my name spoken by my DJs. I'm never going to wash my ears again. What a good day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm cory:

huh, it's always weird for me reading/hearing about this stuff. mom and dad must of done a good job. b/c it makes no sense to me to behave differently
Avatar 1:31pm Cecile:

It just involves not making any judgments and respecting the other person until they give you reason not to. it's not an easy lesson to learn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm coelacanth:

the bar i usually go to,when i go to a bar, has many times thrown people out for that kind of behavior...though occasionally it's an unfair result of a misunderstanding.
Avatar 1:32pm d¢ pät:

@Dean: not always but it's a damn good place to start. When you're constantly told "Compliment a lady, they love it." or some other shit like that, what else are you going to go on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Caryn:

Yeah, I think most of us would rather hear that our WFMU shirts are cool rather than that "smile" crap or some other lame conversation starter. I once had a guy come up to me in a grocery store, say "you should not lose any weight" and keep walking. WTF?!? I still don't know what that was about. "Yes, complete stranger, I will immediately go home, weigh myself, and make it my life's mission to never stray from those digits in any direction."
Avatar 1:33pm Claw!:

I've always told my guy friends that the best approach/pick-up line is always, "Hi, my name is ____, what's yours?"
  1:33pm Martha:

$20 or more to get in the running for this or the Wreckless Eric CD - wfmu.org or 1-800-989-9368.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm cory:

wow, that's fucked up
Avatar 1:33pm V Priceless:

ya gotta love...and hate...people!
Avatar 1:35pm Cecile:

Although I did have a wasted gay guy give me compliments on my "rack" when hubby and I were also wasted at our neighborhood nightclub on Christmas Eve. It was kinda of funny, because it was an intellectual appreciation of it. "Honey, I'm 100% gay, but..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Caryn:

@Claw!: exactly! Keep it simple and straight-forward. Cheesy pick-up lines or weird comments are not the way to go.
Avatar 1:36pm Cecile:

I think he was wasted. Because people don't normally talk to my chest, if you know what I mean.
Avatar 1:37pm d¢ pät:

But that's the problem, our culture drills that cheesy crap into young men I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm coelacanth:

it pisses me off that "gay" guys are "allowed" to objectify others (males and females).
...i guess it's because they're not an intimidation, but it's still bullshit.
Avatar 1:37pm Cecile:

but what the hell! he gave me my favorite Christmas present - a weird story to tell.
  1:38pm Dean:

If only it were just those *other* dudes. I won't go all Catharine MacKinnon on you, but the problem is greater than the sum of its parts. (BTW, one of the finest moments during my formal education was meeting MacKinnon at a book release event. I love her work.) Tangentially related, last year I grew a pair of pretty substantial mutton chops. I'm usually clean shaven, give or take. Wow, the respect I got from guys! One dude opened a door for me and announced, "It's because of those chops." I've since shaved again (which scared the hell out of my kids).
Avatar 1:38pm V Priceless:

that gay guy was just being a boob, C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm cory:

could this be summed up by, "We all need a little work?"

Avatar 1:43pm Claw!:

Ugh, Caryn, that's ridiculous. People can just be so clueless.
Avatar 1:43pm Cecile:

I have a pretty thick skin about things like that. I tend to shrug them off, or find them funny. Or make a story out of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm coelacanth:

-what cory said.

i met someone who said she was someone's "life coach". i said "and who's Your "life coach"?; she said "I've done all my work." !(...i never called her again.)
  1:45pm Ike:

@Caryn, sounds like a clueless dude trying very, very ineptly to fight female body dysmorphia, perhaps? Are there any specifically Finnish ways of obnoxiously hitting on women BTW? Or is the culture not so forward?
Avatar 1:46pm V Priceless:

@ C - that's the best approach. I have the superpower to morph most things into humor, thankfully.
Avatar 1:46pm Cecile:

I've been lucky to only have a few incidents of harassment(involving both men and women) in my life. Which I dodged, but were not real fun, either.

wow. any teacher or coach who would say that is no teacher or coach.
Avatar 1:46pm Claw!:

Fish, I don't like the gay guy "liberties," if you will, either.
I've been groped by a couple gay dudes, and although I get that they're supposedly "messing around" and/or "nonthreatening," I still don't want to be touched by anyone (especially anywhere within my "bathing suit area") without my consent.
Avatar 1:47pm Claw!:

Avatar 1:47pm Cecile:

I love Police Car! I have that single.
  1:49pm Dean:

@VP: Maybe it's a regional thing. I'm in the Bay Area, which is thick with so-called hipsters, which I am not by a stretch. Chops are the equivalent here of custom exhaust pipes and a Cragar blower manifold and intake in the Midwest. I swear, folks would stop me in the street to compliment the facial hair.
  1:49pm Martha:

Agreed Cecile!
Avatar 1:49pm Cecile:

Well, I wouldn't tolerate that from anyone, Claw! I had a female co-worker grab my ass once at work. I told her "I won't take that from a man, and I won't take it from a women." Then I threatened her with GBH if she ever tried it again. What a f-d up work environment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm cory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Caryn:

@Ike: just the technique of getting slobbery drunk and then trying to get out some coherent words about finding the woman attractive. And when the sight of someone about to pass out doesn't excite the woman, going "come on, come one, what, what?!?" Although there's also the handful of douche canoes that have read some US "players' manual" and try that "degrade women and play weird mind games to try and get dates" crap.
Avatar 1:52pm Cecile:

I missed out a lot of this because I got married young, but yeah, the pissed off drunk in the bar who blames you for everything wrong in his life just because you don't go home with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I was hoping to get some pick-up strategies from Randy from Why Oh Why?, but that may not be the best approach, I'm afraid.

that's a riot, Dean - more power to ya! You should consider growing 'em back! I've always been a 'chops' guy - stems from youthful over-exposure to the likes of Matthew Arnold, Noddy Holder and Trevor Bolder.

Avatar 1:56pm Claw!:

Yeah, Cecile. I had a drunk female friend repeatedly grab my ass and boobs at a show, and I kept telling her to stop. When she kept doing it, I punched her right in the middle of her chest. I said, "I warned you! You keep poking the rattler after it rattles - don't be surprised when you get bit!"
Hasn't happened again since. AND we're still friends! Hooray!
  1:56pm coe:

you mean like King Fowley playing No Doubt that was a bit of a surprise
Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

see, that's a good friendship.

I owned this Slayer album for about a week, then I left it at a neighbors house. A few days later I discovered his mom had thrown it into the garbage. Ah, that mrs. Browne.
Avatar 2:00pm V Priceless:

so glad we've talked "chop" today...
  2:00pm Dean:

I'm not a chops guy so much as a lazy guy. I don't like to shave, and growing chops cut down (pun unintended) on the every-other-daily grind. But keeping chops in shape takes work, too, so whatcha gonna do? Also, I loved telling friends puzzled by my new look why I'd decided to grow them. "I'm starring in a biopic about Lemmy. Playing him as a kid."
Avatar 2:00pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:01pm Claw!:

Lemmy was born with chops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm coelacanth:

i didn't know sideburns were "hipster" now (whatever that is)

...a few years ago people would come up & make some reference to wolverine- who i'd never heard of 'till then; now i just get Lemmy...and i don't look much like Lemmy!
Avatar 2:01pm d¢ pät:

yeah same deal with a mustache. It's way more work keep a mustache in shape than just shaving the damn thing off. Plus you gotta be ready to back it up at all times...
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

some people are not really very imaginative
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Caryn:

I did have a guy in one of my retail jobs who would regularly come to the store, corner one of the female salespeople and talk and talk about the race horses he had, how rich he was, how his watch was gold, and how he was sure he "could come up with something" for the salesperson to do if they came and worked for him at his "estate". Yeah, sure, dude. (I should also mention that this was the equivalent of a Dollar Store in terms of prices, making the logic of a supposed millionaire hanging out there regularly even weirder.)

  2:05pm Dean:

I remember working the record store, late '70s, making change with a silver dollar. The customer returned it, "I hate these!" My response, "Geez, I'd love a million of 'em." "Really?!," responded the customer before doing the simple math.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Caryn:

@V P: I didn't think so, but that was his whole schpiel, to whichever woman he managed to corner. And heck, he might've had some money, but I don't think the "find the first woman who has to listen to you politely and talk about how rich you are and how she could maybe service you if you paid her" is ever a good strategy. Just skeezy.

  2:42pm Ike:

I'm from MD too. I have a soft spot for Baltimore even though I'm in NYC now and probably for good. Radio is atrocious in MD though. That's why so many FMU listeners and pledgers there.
Avatar 2:42pm V Priceless:

@ dcp - are you near where 'Walking Dead' is filming?
Avatar 2:43pm d¢ pät:

and from DC, Ike. Radio is the worst here. Can't even listen to classical station because they play the same 10 waltzes over and over again...
Avatar 2:43pm d¢ pät:

uh.. I don't know anything about that. I just don't watch any tv at all outside of futbol.
  2:43pm G:

The Towson college station is freeform lite, when I'm in Catonsville and in the car...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm sphere:

amen, dc pat. and i can't stand waltzes.
  2:44pm Ike:

@V, isn't that GA?
Avatar 2:45pm Cecile:

And dcp, didn't DC have great classical radio as recently as about 20 years ago?
Avatar 2:45pm d¢ pät:

you'd think, just sometimes, they'd play something written in the 20th century!! But no, nothing...
Avatar 2:45pm Claw!:

Yeah, I hear good things about the Towson station. I just never tuned in because I already have FMU. :-P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm coelacanth:

i've got to actually work now

ciao people Thanks Diane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Caryn:

I wonder if DC classical radio has taken lessons from the various political spin doctors? "Stick to a handful of inoffensive waltzes, so you don't upset anyone. Don't do anything daring or that might put off some listeners. No, put the Penderecki down!"
Avatar 2:46pm V Priceless:

Ike: you're right. They may still be filming there, even though the story line has taken them to Arlington, VA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm sphere:

i have a hard time liking the Towson station because i always catch them playing lame "Americana" tunes.

So @Claw you're still in MD? I guess I can't come to yr record store and sarcastically tell you to smile then. (And then prob get clawed for being a jackass, ha.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Caryn:

Speaking of Americana and bluegrass, the Grammy categories flummox me, because there's "roots Americana", "regional Americana", "bluegrass" etc. as separate things, and I'm at a loss to figure out how they classify some stuff as one and not the other. They must have way more precise definitions for those genres than most. Or they just pick names out of a hat for each.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm cory:

c'mon, i don't even like metal and i love Diane's show!!
Avatar 2:55pm d¢ pät:

I'm with you cory, not a metal guy but I LOVE DK's show. That's what FMU is all about.
  2:55pm G:

@sphere: That's what I was getting at with "freeform lite" -- Towson has nothing at all scary or too weird -- only gets a car listen. When I'm stationary down there, it's FMU streaming on the work laptop lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm cory:

although i blame that on my local metal scene
  2:56pm Ike:

@DCP, really? They dumped that translator signal from Bethesda? Crap.
Avatar 2:56pm Cecile:

sub "classic rock" for Americana and that works.
Bluegrass is its own thing
Avatar 2:57pm d¢ pät:

yeah, it was the only thing interesting. Although they do have BBC now..which is...OK. Better than NPR.
Avatar 2:57pm Claw!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Caryn:

@Cecile: It's just they have very small subcategories for some genres (soul, gospel, Americana, country and bluegrass in its various forms), and then very general genres, like rock, hard rock, pop, etc.
