Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

who designed the board game?
  3:08pm Shari Vari:

Quick question: do we get entered in drawings if we pledge online during the show (and credit the pledge to the show)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm cory:

shari, yes you do! click away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Caryn:

@Shari Vari: yep. And if you use the pledge widget on the playlist page, your pledge is automatically credited to the show, so it saves on hassle.

yeah, but if you want to pledge to another show in addition, or instead of, it's also easy to change.

@Cecile: exactly. I feel a huge urge to start playing, then stop playing pretty fast because I'm completely confounded by the rules and strategy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Caryn:

Darn, that should have two n's.
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

I've wanted to play that, but never got around to it. I keep calling it Carcass One
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Caryn:

I keep wanting to get the expansions, but my money tends to go to WFMU. I can live with that.

he's trying to get me to play Munchkin which looks fun. I played Cutting off Heads with him and his buds, which is a riot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Caryn:

I like puzzles and puzzle games, cards, board games... I can't do with too much strategy, but don't mind a modicum of it.
Avatar 3:56pm JakeGould:

This past winter one of my “stuck indoors” pastimes was to setup MAME on my Mac but only with the games I grew up playing. So it’s mainly the dumb video games from the 1970s and early 1980s. No deep plot, but THAT is my video game world. Fascinating how Space Invaders still grabs me, but other games just don’t.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm cory:

Munchkin is a really great 2 player game. haven't tried more than that though. we also really like Ticket To Ride.
Avatar 3:57pm Cecile:

I like cribbage. And Galaga. And Plants vs. Zombies. And Auro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Love watching Galaga. I can't play it worth beans.
Avatar 3:58pm JakeGould:

The video games taper off around 1982 and the oldest I care about is 1985. Mr. Do became an OCD thing. Geez that game.
Avatar 3:58pm Cecile:

this Stormtrooper was what I always wanted the Who to sound like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Pat in Philadelphia:

Thanks Brian and Thomas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Caryn:

@JakeGould: yep, today's first-person shooters, strategy games or complex MMORPGs don't grab me, but give me Space Invaders or some old-timey Commodore 64 games, I'm all over it.
Avatar 3:59pm Cecile:

I like a lot of the Who, but they had to grow on me, and they never sounded as loud and dirty as rock critics would have me believe.

I like Infinity Blade III. Duel monsters. Get pretty gems.
Avatar 4:00pm Slugsadist:

Oh itt says right there I'm stupid.
  4:01pm anon:

Is this really a marathon?
Avatar 4:01pm d¢ pät:

well the Who were first and foremost a pop group that also happened to play really loud live with feedback and stuff. Once you get that you sort of see where the studio albums come from. The Kinks sound more rough than the Who did.
Avatar 4:02pm JakeGould:

For me, I remember first seeing “Chiller”—the arcade game—where you just shoot and mutilate in 8-bit and I wasn’t disgusted by it as much as… Why would I want to spend time doing that? Had to be 1986 when I saw that.
Avatar 4:03pm Cecile:

yeah, I figured that out finally, dcp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Caryn:

Yeah, The Who had loud live shows and the craziness of Keith Moon. Otherwise, they weren't very rough or wild.
Avatar 4:03pm d¢ pät:

stuff = breaking everything into pieces. I guess that's where the reputation came from.
Avatar 4:04pm d¢ pät:

I love the first 4 albums but the synth shit leaves me tapping my foot now.
Avatar 4:04pm Cecile:

Yeah. I definitely preferred the Kinks, Creation and Move.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm cory:

i had a drummer friend once tell me that keith moon wasn't very good. he's since come out as a bassist.
Avatar 4:05pm d¢ pät:

uh..tapping my foot impatiently, not in time with the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm chris:

lol, cory!
Avatar 4:06pm JakeGould:

I hear Ringo Starr was a bad drummer.
Avatar 4:06pm d¢ pät:

Keith was good, he just didn't do anything technically amazing on the recordings. He played kind of backwards too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Caryn:

I love The Who, but I just don't consider them terribly rough. Just very good at perpetuating a reputation through their live shows and extracurricular antics.
Avatar 4:06pm d¢ pät:

it's just I got this impression that once I heard the Who my MIND. WOULD. BE. BLOWN. but it didn't happen.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Caryn:

John Entwistle is who I go for. I loved that The Kids Are Alright DVD had the feature where you could isolate the individual members performances. I can listen to the 2 isolated Entwistle tracks over and over again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- It's important that The Wh♂ were the 1st band w/ six-foot amps (Marshal stacks) - when The Beatles were still in suits. The Kinks & Yardbirds were significant too in pioneering what we now call 'Hard Rock' &/or Guitar Rawk. Also the American Garage people like the Sonics (& their antecedents in Rockabilly like Link Wray & Surf like Dick Dale - who would blow amplifiers pushing them). These were the link between the energy of James Brown & Little Richard to the age of Amplifiers...What we think of now as Loud Metallic Rawk didn't begin to even be possible until the late 60s. Then The Wh♂ became pretty Heavy & less Mod; Townshend: 'People like Hendrix & Zep always stole from us - & we always stole back'...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Caryn:

@RRN63: yeah, I think a lot of stuff that we find quite tame was revolutionary and wild at the time. The Who were "the loudest band in the world", but again, mainly in their live shows. Their recordings weren't terribly loud or wild compared to a lot of the stuff out there.

Hey BT and folks! I can't listen right now but I'm rah rah-ing for BT and FMU. Please pledge if you have not already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Mike East:

@RevRabbit - I believe you can totally play the prize lotto by calling in or pledging in small increments that add up to the total that you pledge over the course of the year (not including the "silent" marathon). I did that last year and won all kinds of cool stuff.
Avatar 4:46pm Cecile:

Mike East, that kind of prize account is now gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Uncle Michael:

Mike, I think you should email Joe Mcgasko. He can help you sort this out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Caryn:

@Cecile: no, you can still do that. The prize account where you set up, say a SFL and then pledge that amount in increments over the Marathon is over. However, you can pledge small amounts to individual shows, choose the "bill me" option, and then, when the Marathon is over, have Joe McG add all the pledges together into, say a SFL account and change the "bill me" into a monthly credit card payment. That's what I'm doing. I checked with Joe before the Marathon that that is still possible.
