about cover of Ravel, i think Kebekelektrik's one is my favorite.
It serves as Scott Williams's bed music.

'easy does it' as just said sammy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Ken From Hyde Park:

It occurred to me that "Children of the Sea" from Black Sabbath has some chorus near the end that sounds like Bolero. Why hasn't that gone to court yet?
Avatar 9:27am cory:

It's an ok movie. If you must see it, wait til it's streaming.
Avatar 9:49am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Joe, Funny about PT Anderson. Wasn't he "Magnolia"? What a crock that one was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Marcel M:

Hello Joe and friends.

I JUST saw The Master. While watching it I did not like it. But the next day, thinking about it, I decided though I didn't love it, I didn't hate it, and enjoyed how wacked out it was.
  9:50am Josh M:

Hey Joe - you should see Inherent Vice (but I liked The Master) - & I didn't like the book IV. so there
Avatar 9:50am GeesyCreesy:

@Joe: I thought I was the only one who wasn't a fan of PT Anderson, though I enjoyed There Will Be Blood.
  9:51am Cooh John:

Hello Joe. It's you and the snow.
  9:52am lloyd michigan:

I thought Peter Tosh was the toughest.
Avatar 9:52am βrian:

In BusinessBlather, the phrase "surface noise" would imply an imperative. I like Joe's intent better.

@lloyd: No, it's definitely me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Yes, see Inherent Vice! I'm not a big Joaquin Phoenix fan and I think it was really good.

Cool. Thanks for setting me straight, Joe.
Avatar 9:53am Claw!:

@joe - Prove it!
Avatar 9:54am Claw!:

I challenge your toughness!

Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

Well, there you go: I play Meat Loaf. I'm clearly the toughest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am common:

I wanna see that one, karen
Avatar 9:58am Claw!:

V! I was just gonna tell Joe about that time we got hammered and wailed on each other's faces about who likes Meat Loaf more! That's where I got my facial scar! So tough!!!!
  9:58am Chris:

So Bolero turned my grandma into a fan of your show
Avatar 9:59am V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am sphere:

next advance in technology: a cat sled.
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

BTW, everybody, thanks for the movie and book recommendations. There's so many other movies I'd sooner see than "Inherent Vice," but I will get around to watching it.
Avatar 10:15am Claw!:

Whiplash was good, but maybe I'm biased because of the whole drummer thing.
  10:18am lloyd michigan:

The singer from ABBA?
Avatar 10:18am Roberto:

This reminds me of how great the Streisand version of this song is. Got to go back and listen again.
  10:19am John W:

What better after Italian club music than Swedish '70s pop!
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

@lloyd: Yep!
Avatar 10:20am GeesyCreesy:

@Claw!: Whiplash is the most recent movie I've considered seeing more than once in a theater. Maybe I'll make another screening after all of this snow melts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Webhamster Henry:

Reminds me of how good the Seo Jorge version is.
  10:20am lloyd michigan:

Never heard this before.
  10:20am tinkle bear:

you have going here. very cool.
and i want to see that joe mcgasko vs nat roe
Avatar 10:20am Sem Chumbo:

Kinda miss her playmates on this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am davex:

Wonder if this is played on the Swedish version of the BBC show.
Avatar 10:21am pierre:

if you'd allow me to just throw it out there, I tought that Whiplash was very efficient, very well edited, but it left me with a weird impression that I saw a very classial movie story wise, like scenaristically speaking it reminded me of Cocktail with Tom Cruise. It is a american 80's story to me.
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@tinkle bear: Ha ha ha! I can take Nat Roe, no problem.
Avatar 10:23am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

@pierre: it was *composed*, alright, classic dramatic structure, I think.
Avatar 10:25am pierre:

yeah, but I the meantime I felt no empathy whatsoever with any character.
  10:27am tinkle bear:

@Joe McG
it'd be totally pay-per-view worthy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Loved Only Lovers Left Alive! And a great sound track to boot!
Avatar 10:29am βrian:

Vampires, as a subject, is pretty tired. But I did like "Let the right one in."
Avatar 10:29am Sem Chumbo:

@pierre: likewise. Could not get by the obvious function of the characters within the structure.
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

Speaking of vampires, What We Do In The Shadows is fricking hilarious.
Avatar 10:30am βrian:

But since it's Jim Jarmusch, I guess I'll have to give it a go.
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

Whiplash looked stupid, and a number of people have commented on the homophobia in it, so I didn't need to see it.

Thanks for the Billy McKenzie. I love him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am adrian in mpls:

I'll second the Only Lovers Left Alive vote
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Webhamster Henry:

OLLA also has great audio equipment porn.
Avatar 10:31am Claw!:

Yeah, cecile. That trailer looks hilarious!
Eagle vs. Shark was really funny, so I'm sold.
Avatar 10:31am Cecile:

I'm biased about What We Do, because it's from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi from NZ, but my friends had no such bias, and found it hilarious as well.
Avatar 10:32am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Planning on going to see Maps to the Stars tonight. Will give my critique next week.
Avatar 10:32am Cecile:

Claw! have you seen Boy? It's a great movie, also directed by Taika Waititi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Polyus:

So do White Hills get to play vampires as well?
Avatar 10:33am Joe McG:

Any Italian fans who can translate the title of this song would do me a great service.
Avatar 10:35am luca:

@joe: there's no reason (which is the translation ;))
Avatar 10:35am Claw!:

No, I haven't - I'll look into it, though. :)
Avatar 10:36am Joe McG:

Thanks, Luca!
Avatar 10:36am Cecile:

It's on chunks on YouTube, and probably Netflix too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Mike Noble:

@Dean - there's a great boot of Genesis live at the Lyceum from 1980, touring "Duke." The Duke suite really needs to be heard as a contiguous performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am herb.nyc:

in alan licht's "emotional memoirs..." book, he wrote (something like) "when i think of GENESIS all i see is phil collins on a big stage running left and right". HI JOE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am nickybones:

Hope not! Genesis is massive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am efd:

and here I thought I was the only one bothered -- well, mildly annoyed -- by the difference in the legal ID signs between Studio A and Studio B.
  11:04am Dean:

Maybe the DJs own shares of this: http://themusicalbox.net/

@Mike Noble: IIRC, I have one or two from '76 or '77. Also, come to think of it, I have a Japanese issue of the double live thing, i.e., legitimate. By "Duke," I'm afraid, I'd lost interest. Not sure I've ever heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Mike Noble:

Al Kooper wrote this diamond ring, right?
Avatar 11:04am the Canterbury wood-elf:

I really can't handle any Genesis after "Wind and Wuthering". The classic Gabriel albums were a huge thing for me a teenager. Never put them on anymore, but they've got *something* worthy about them. The Collins era was just depressing in comparison.
Avatar 11:05am Cecile:

Can you play "Love Don't Live Here Any More" sometime, Joe? It is such a sweet but desolate ballad.
  11:05am Dean:

OTOH, Collins' work with Brand X was terrific. And I have a soft spot for Cafe Jacques, with whom he worked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Mike Noble:

@Dean - I once drove from PA to Montreal to see the Musical Box perform their "last ever show" in 1999. And then apparently they changed their mind?
Avatar 11:07am Cecile:

I can stand some Brand X, but I have never liked one note of Genesis, and lord I have heard enough of it from my friends to make an informed decision.
Avatar 11:08am Cecile:

I do have a 45 of Easy Lover because I love EWF and the song was cute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Carmichael:

Heya Joe and peoples of the airwaves. Eclectic songlist dere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am herb.nyc:

i love the wfmu dj's! but i'm not gonna marry them! (i have a library copy of INSIDE PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. I will be over right away.
  11:10am sweet essence of giraffe:

reading recommendations noted. thanks!
  11:10am ?:

Should make clear that you still need plenty of volunteers AFTER the Marathon for pledge fulfillment. Unless you guys farm that out now.
  11:11am Dean:

@Mike Noble: They've had a few "last shows ever," haven't they? I've never seen them, but a buddy of mine who is tight with some of the inner circle of over-the-top Genesis fans has caught them.

@Cecile: Three words: "The Waiting Room." It's the Eno-ized outlier on LLDOB. There are bootleg versions that surpass the studio mess and herald jam bands way before Leftover Salmon. It's the one Genesis tune that sounds nothing like Genesis. Needless to say, it's an instrumental.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Mike Noble:

Ryley Walker is also an incredibly nice guy.
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

@Mike: Can't wait to hear the new record en toto. Sounds Bert Janschy to me!
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

Dean, I think I heard it way back. I'll have to refresh my memory when I have a chance.

great Strawbs / Sandy track Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am DCE:

let's all get Jaschy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Carmichael:

Oh yeah, I know this voice. Better Sandy than the lamb like bleating of Dave Cousins.
Avatar 11:17am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

@tinkle bear: a wildwood weed contact high effect, no doubt. See ya around.
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

Oh, now, Carmichael, I like that sheepy boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am herb.nyc:

since there's MARATHON tawk now, for the record, my acctng firm DEWEY CHEATHAM & HOWE & WHYNOT, will mail my pre-marathon pledge this afternoon. plus, they added 1% extra because they are members of the 1%. now isn't that a happy ending?
Avatar 11:18am still b/p:

I don't have the big hate for Phil Collins, but have never been able to do anything but blink twice slowly when thinking about his 80s - 90s work/image and then about his young stint with Eno on Another Green World.

At first glance I thought the image on Google homepage today had something to do with invention of Cheez-Whiz, but it honors the birthday of the instant noodle revoloutionary!

Avatar 11:20am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Much obliged to you for the Strawbs and Sandy Denny, Joe. Wonderful.
Avatar 11:21am V Priceless:

what Joe McG said - DC is a criminally underrated song writer & performer.
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

@herb: Ha! @Sweet Essence: I haven't remarked on your excellent choice in name, sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Carmichael:

That was a bit harsh, eh? Sorry, I love the Strawbs with Denny. I find them difficult to listen when DC sings, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Whosondephone:

This is some very nice music you wrote Joe McGasko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Brian in UK:

Not a Phil Collins fan but as he is a David Ackles fan so I cannot dislike him.

@Joe God bless Viv Stanshall for the essence.
Avatar 11:24am Cecile:

When I was depressed in the 80s, I'd play the live version of this or Calgary Cross over and over again.

Avatar 11:25am Joe McG:

Avatar 11:26am V Priceless:

yeah @ Sweet Essence! Was thinking that too!

@ Carm - I know where you're coming from though, as it seems a shared experience for many when it comes to DC's singing. I'm that way with some bands, too - kinda unavoidable, I guess!
  11:26am Brendan:

Joe, thanks for sharing this great music today and everyday. You are a national treasure.
  11:27am βrian:

@Cecile: Wow, for the entire 1980s?

@Sem are the snows melting?
Avatar 11:28am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Cecil Yeah, that live "Calvary Cross" is something else. Assuming "Calgary Cross" was the Canadian release?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Brian in UK:

@Sem I think I might play 'Teddy Boys Dont Knit' later. Bass Macaw & Broken Bottles is a very painful track then lightened by Terry Keeps His Clips on.
