Featuring Our Very Special Guest
(More info...)
Certain artists make a habit of popping up on other people's records. On this October Fundraiser special, Surface Noise focuses on several artists whose distinctive musical personalities come through even when they are only making guest appearances on other people's records.
@claw, just realising now what your avatar pictures. well, tough. just please say something like 'it's a non venimous snake and this guy is doing fine and all is perfect'.
bibi, I just had another commenter point out last week that it appears to be defanged, so I think everything is ok. hah. I was just thinkin about changing it, too!
It occurred to me that "Children of the Sea" from Black Sabbath has some chorus near the end that sounds like Bolero. Why hasn't that gone to court yet?
By an interesting coincidence, I just read about a free, first-come-first-served Sinatra double bill at the Lincoln Center library tonight. Hitch up the sled.
Read the book first, and if you like it, you'll probably love the film. If you're not into the book, don't bother. I loved both, but I'm a Pynchon freak.
I JUST saw The Master. While watching it I did not like it. But the next day, thinking about it, I decided though I didn't love it, I didn't hate it, and enjoyed how wacked out it was.
9:50am
Josh M:
Hey Joe - you should see Inherent Vice (but I liked The Master) - & I didn't like the book IV. so there
V! I was just gonna tell Joe about that time we got hammered and wailed on each other's faces about who likes Meat Loaf more! That's where I got my facial scar! So tough!!!!
9:58am
Chris:
So Bolero turned my grandma into a fan of your show
BTW, everybody, thanks for the movie and book recommendations. There's so many other movies I'd sooner see than "Inherent Vice," but I will get around to watching it.
@Claw!: Whiplash is the most recent movie I've considered seeing more than once in a theater. Maybe I'll make another screening after all of this snow melts.
if you'd allow me to just throw it out there, I tought that Whiplash was very efficient, very well edited, but it left me with a weird impression that I saw a very classial movie story wise, like scenaristically speaking it reminded me of Cocktail with Tom Cruise. It is a american 80's story to me.
I'm biased about What We Do, because it's from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi from NZ, but my friends had no such bias, and found it hilarious as well.
how long was the jim stafford show on? cbs tried really hard to fill the sonny and cher spot and nothing stuck - just cher (sonny jumped to abc), shields and yarnell, the captain and tenille, jim,
Man. I don't mean to bum you NorthEasterners out or anything but it's supposed to be in the 60s here in Nebraska for the foreseeable future starting tomorrow.
@Dean - there's a great boot of Genesis live at the Lyceum from 1980, touring "Duke." The Duke suite really needs to be heard as a contiguous performance.
in alan licht's "emotional memoirs..." book, he wrote (something like) "when i think of GENESIS all i see is phil collins on a big stage running left and right". HI JOE.
11:01am
Kevlicki:
I can't stand Phil Collins, but somehow wasn't annoyed by that genesis song.
and here I thought I was the only one bothered -- well, mildly annoyed -- by the difference in the legal ID signs between Studio A and Studio B.
11:04am
Dean:
Maybe the DJs own shares of this: http://themusicalbox.net/
@Mike Noble: IIRC, I have one or two from '76 or '77. Also, come to think of it, I have a Japanese issue of the double live thing, i.e., legitimate. By "Duke," I'm afraid, I'd lost interest. Not sure I've ever heard it.
I really can't handle any Genesis after "Wind and Wuthering". The classic Gabriel albums were a huge thing for me a teenager. Never put them on anymore, but they've got *something* worthy about them. The Collins era was just depressing in comparison.
Should make clear that you still need plenty of volunteers AFTER the Marathon for pledge fulfillment. Unless you guys farm that out now.
11:11am
Dean:
@Mike Noble: They've had a few "last shows ever," haven't they? I've never seen them, but a buddy of mine who is tight with some of the inner circle of over-the-top Genesis fans has caught them.
@Cecile: Three words: "The Waiting Room." It's the Eno-ized outlier on LLDOB. There are bootleg versions that surpass the studio mess and herald jam bands way before Leftover Salmon. It's the one Genesis tune that sounds nothing like Genesis. Needless to say, it's an instrumental.
since there's MARATHON tawk now, for the record, my acctng firm DEWEY CHEATHAM & HOWE & WHYNOT, will mail my pre-marathon pledge this afternoon. plus, they added 1% extra because they are members of the 1%. now isn't that a happy ending?
I don't have the big hate for Phil Collins, but have never been able to do anything but blink twice slowly when thinking about his 80s - 90s work/image and then about his young stint with Eno on Another Green World.
At first glance I thought the image on Google homepage today had something to do with invention of Cheez-Whiz, but it honors the birthday of the instant noodle revoloutionary!
@ Carm - I know where you're coming from though, as it seems a shared experience for many when it comes to DC's singing. I'm that way with some bands, too - kinda unavoidable, I guess!
11:26am
Brendan:
Joe, thanks for sharing this great music today and everyday. You are a national treasure.
@elf I have been up in Stoke until today so twas a bit more chilly up North. Now in warm Watford.
11:38am
Laura L:
Howdy, just a note to say what everybody else is saying--a great show today, thank you; this segment in particular's perfect for this snowy day in NYC.
@Sem I think I might play 'Teddy Boys Dont Knit' later. Bass Macaw & Broken Bottles is a very painful track then lightened by Terry Keeps His Clips on.
@Joe, these'll keep you happy for a while. Worcestershire (pronounced "woostershur"); Whitstable; Dorking; Little Gidding; Gweek; Heckington; Farley Chamberlayne; Cheriton Fitzpaine; Zeal Monochorum; Ryme Intrinseca; Fernysplat (all real places in the UK)
Hang in there fellow nor'easters , in a week or two there'll be daffodils, buds and the like. Thanks again Joe - savin' my pennies for next week's marathon! Off for a walk in the snowy woods and to a lake in snowy Maryland.
