Hello Diane! (are you going to 70k tons this year?) Hola everyone!
Avatar 12:31pm V Priceless:

Fowley described himself as a cross between "Gorgeous George and Frankenstein" - that pretty much nails it.

DK are you going to Primavera this year ;) ;) www.stereogum.com...

I am not going to 70,000 tons this year. :(

@ Diane - ha - I remember recording The Kinks off the TV speaker when they were on SNL in '77! Me and the ol' portable cassette recorder were joined at the hip back then.
Avatar 12:55pm extinct_species:

@ Diane - Listening to this playlist is making me think that maybe a Touch & Go Records segment for the show would be nice ( Im not sure if you have already? I know about no request ... just putting it out there :P)
Avatar 12:56pm slugluv1313:

@ MD -- YES! i remember seeing that as it happened (i think i had just seen them at the Palladium too) -- TOTAL chaos and silliness and joy, IMHO :)
on the other hand, only recent stumbled upon this equally brilliant clip of The Slits on Belgian TV -- also from 1980 -- and check out that line-up! in addition to The Slits, The Pop Group, Prince, and Foreigner were also guests on the show!
Avatar 12:58pm slugluv1313:

@ DIane -- ahh Lydon on Tom Snyder! i had to go to the college laundry room/lounge to go watch that -- i had no TV!

Avatar 1:08pm Cecile:

I remember that SNL with the Kinks well. Nobody young knew about them over in the US (that I knew) and I learned to love them in Australia. I was so happy to see them.
  1:11pm Dean:

We knew about them here, too, thanks to the Kinks Kronikles LP from 1972.
Avatar 1:11pm Cecile:

I knew people did, but none of them were in my high school.
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

What restaurant?
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

Fried pickles! Yum.
Avatar 1:15pm V Priceless:

@ Cecile - cool! I seem to recall an SNL DVD comp of bands that have appeared over the years. I'm pretty sure both The Kinks and Beefheart were not included.

Avatar 1:45pm Cheri Pi:

My kingdom for one of those peas.
  1:50pm Dean:

If I were at this moment in Bushwick, I'd order the roasted beets and either the brisket or, taking a risk, the salmon pastrami. And a beer. And the cheesy cauliflower (a plainer variation of which I made just this weekend!).
Avatar 1:53pm Cecile:

wow! just got back.

Edwards sausage is great.
  1:53pm Dean:

That'd be *last* weekend. Geez, it's Thursday. See the menu: http://montanastrailhouse.com/
Avatar 1:54pm Cecile:

hahahahhaa, deep fried and brined is the way most better restaurants do it.
Avatar 1:55pm Cecile:

root beer braised brisket. I just looked
Avatar 1:55pm GeesyCreesy:

Anyone in the Memphis area a fan of Gus's Fried Chicken? Any favorite chicken joints outside of the NY area?
Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

it is the only brown pop I will drink.
Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

birch beer is kind of gross.
Avatar 1:56pm V Priceless:

root beer rules!
Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

They do make it at the keeweenaw brewery in Houghton, MI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm sphere:

BTW, the last place you will find Maryland Fried Chicken is Maryland. Go figure.
Avatar 1:57pm Cecile:

Montana, have you tried Mauby? That's a kind of Carribean root beer/sasparsilla
Avatar 1:57pm Cecile:

It's a bit too bitter for me, but I see the appeal, especially with jerk.
  1:57pm Dean:

@sphere, I take it that's not because it's the first place you'd look?
Avatar 1:58pm Cecile:

this is a great song.
You should play this during flu season
Avatar 2:01pm V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm sphere:

@Dean, the dish evidently had its origins here but it isn't a big regional dish outside the Eastern Shore.
Avatar 2:04pm Cecile:

another Maryland one that is hard to find, and I'd like to try is country ham stuffed with greens.
  2:04pm Hugh C:

The Boylan Brewing Co. in Paterson, NJ makes a terrific Birch Beer, and a Creamy Red Birch Beer. All their beverages are good, in moderation. All are made with cane sugar.
Avatar 2:05pm Cheri Pi:

never tried Birch beer but I will be visiting keeweenay brewery in July.Rootbeer is the real gross stuff to me.
Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

I had a hard time with where I had it, Hugh.
It was both bitter and too sweet.
  2:05pm Dean:

I wonder if there are Kentucky Fried Chickens in Kentucky.

OMG, country ham stuffed w/ greens. Cripes, I just ate an early lunch -- my own carnitas and long-simmered pinto beans -- and I'm now hungry again.
Avatar 2:06pm Cecile:

those root/herb style sodas are definitely for smaller audiences.
Avatar 2:06pm Polyus:

Love Boylan, have not had the birch beer though. I'll look for it.
Avatar 2:07pm Cecile:

does Boylan ship any of their stuff to Minnesota?
Avatar 2:08pm Cecile:

Here's the recipe:
Avatar 2:08pm Cheri Pi:

I don't. It's in the cream soda department
Avatar 2:08pm V Priceless:

3 Mahi Mahi !! haha
  2:09pm Dean:

Some of us can't even spell saspa--, sarsa--, saspri--, oh, fuck it.
Avatar 2:09pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:09pm GeesyCreesy:

@Cheri- Barley's Brewing in Columbus has a root beer that might change your tune, but I can understand not wanting to try it if you already know you don't like the stuff.
Avatar 2:11pm Cecile:

mauby is a great flame-tamer for food, but it has a very medicinal aftertaste that I didn't like much.
Avatar 2:11pm Polyus:

@Cecile - Yep. I used to find their soda at the Kowalski's in St. Paul when I lived in that neighborhood. That was a few years ago though.
Avatar 2:11pm Cheri Pi:

If it wasn't too sweet I might like it.
Avatar 2:11pm Cecile:

I will have to look for it.
  2:13pm Mark:

Used to buy Boylan's when I lived in Michigan, too.
  2:13pm Mark:

Diane you like how we hijacked your page and made it the Sody-y Pop Page?
Avatar 2:14pm Cheri Pi:

BTW, I say Soda but in Cincinnati it's called pop.
  2:15pm Dean:

Kokakola Fun Machine
Avatar 2:15pm Cecile:

I say both.
Avatar 2:16pm Luna:

Meanwhile, I've just made the strongest pot of coffee for myself and our archives and library volunteers. Oops.
  2:18pm Mark:

We called it pop in Michigan, too, but I didn't want to sound like a hick. (Hic!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Andrew Waterloo:

When we make coffee here it is usually fairly strong because we have a large grinder. We had a co-op student who made coffee once and she said she didn't know how much coffee to put in but figured because it was strong it was 2 grinders worth. That was strong coffee.
Avatar 2:18pm Cecile:

A lot of times, I say soda pop to cover all bases
  2:19pm Mark:

And this is where exactly, Luna? I mean the address.
Avatar 2:19pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The only carbonated beverage this Druid endorses is the Jarritos tamarind. It's plentiful here.
Avatar 2:19pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Otherwise it's cold water or strong coffee all the way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Andrew Waterloo:

We call it pop in Ontario.
  2:19pm Dean:

Here in Berkeley it's called Big Soda, but not because we're big fans.
  2:19pm Mark:

I always drink that stuff in Mexican restaurants Rev.
Avatar 2:31pm Luna:

I'm in Albuquerque. I work with our museum collections, but the a & l is down the hall, and they have the full set up - coffee maker, fridge, accoutrements. Instead of the usual crap folgers or cheapo coffee brand, I bring in some green mountain coffee grounds to mix it up now and again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Alan B:

In Sacramento digging the KFM show. Do the hardcore singers have to do special exercises to sing that way or do they have steel belted implants on their airways or have they all just signed contracts with you know satan? Do any of them smoke, dumb question, but how could they survive?
  2:47pm Mark:

I like the Liminanas--I was trying to drum up enough interest to lure them to Ann Arbor when I lived there, but could never pull it off. They're French Canadian, not French French, if I'm remembering correctly.
  2:49pm Mark:

Albuquerque's a little far to journey for a cup of coffee, Luna. I'll just have to have one of those pods out of the machine.
Avatar 2:50pm Chris from DC:

Nice, A to Z is a very underrated album.
Avatar 2:53pm Fashion Tashjian:

Godflesh, every week, yes, thanks
Avatar 2:56pm V Priceless:
