Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

You must be this tall to ride the rollercoaster that is HDT.
  12:02pm Dean:

Good afternoon to you and all, ndbob. Still morning here.

I'll be she really was there. She just chose not to answer the doorbell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm pacific standard simon:

So Michael should have played the flip side of this record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Hey, Lewis!
  12:13pm Dean:

The Road's rubato is a roller coaster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

@still b/p: If I get word of the consequences, I shall! As to finding out, I recognized the name of a geneticist but wanted to specify his national origin; the author listed "Asian American," but I wanted to list the actual Asian country (so far as it's pertinent to the text, which is a whole other query I've added). I Googled; the Wikipedia snippet that came up as a preview read VERY familiar, I scanned vs. my MS, and boom: barely rewritten. So, in CSI: Miami terms:

(•_•) It seems
( •_•)>⌐■-■ this geneticist
(⌐■_■) was cloned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Lane Steelpicker:

Damn. Still not to Woodbridge. Good tunes, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm pacific standard simon:

Get off that rollercoaster, Lane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

This train never makes it to Woodbridge, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

rubato! new word to me!

Domo arigato, music rubato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Lewis:

is this a lee hazelwood comp / production?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Lewis:

I can kind hear lee singing it...
Avatar 12:20pm ndbob:

Yep it is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Gary:

I thought she was singing "Sugar Time." So I got up off the couch and got the cake out of the fridge. Now, however, that I've sat down in front of my computer with my piece of cake, I see that it is not "Sugar Time" after all. Not sure what to do now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Gary, the important thing is you have cake. Your first principles are correct.
Avatar 12:23pm ndbob:

I always considered ita double A side, but Sugartown was far bigger
Avatar 12:23pm still b/p:

Nancy, the Marie Antoinette of her generation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Gary:

Yes, but, can I eat it, too? And, if not, when, if not now, *is* Sugar Time? Am I thinking about it all wrong? Is it, perhaps, an endless present (e.g., it is always-already Sugar Time)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

Matzoh ball soup! Done well it's manna from heaven. This NYC-area denizen gives much respect.
  12:25pm doctorjazz:

Good Matzoh Balls are really hard to pull off, impressed!
Avatar 12:26pm kat330:

@UM: "More Than Human"? Anything in the notes you might have suggest this is inspired by Sturgeon's WONDERFUL novel of the same name?
  12:27pm Dean:

Maybe those were what still b/p's sign at 12:04 was referring to.
Avatar 12:27pm still b/p:

Sugar Time slows down if it travels at the speed of Stevia.
Avatar 12:27pm ndbob:

If you are sick here (and associated with IU) Hillel will deliver free matzoh ball soup to you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Kat, the notes on the LP are very sparse. Let me know if the lyrics remind you of the book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Gary:

Speaking of sugar -- nice opening "licks" on this Doll by Doll number
Avatar 12:28pm kat330:

Never cared for Nancy Sinatra and can't fathom why she's such a darling at FMU. She donate big or something? ;)
  12:29pm Dean:

It was the boot threat.
Avatar 12:30pm kat330:

Well, love is certainly a big part of Sturgeon's message (always is), but I don't think I'm getting any of the "gestalt" aspect. I recommend the book if anyone has not read it. I did so when I was 9, and it has affected me ever after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

I just like her records, Kat.
Avatar 12:31pm kat330:

Oh, I meant her artistry too since I know little to nothing about her personally.
  12:32pm Dean:

@kat, I really liked your recitation of the limericks punning the names of composers. Some of them take a while to figure out, all for the better.
Avatar 12:32pm kat330:

I do quite like about every Doll by Doll you've played. Niiiice.
Avatar 12:33pm kat330:

@Dean: Thank you, sir! Yeah, well, they were written for the written medium, not for the ear. That's why I stress reading them as you listen, or most of the pun-fun is missed.
Avatar 12:34pm V Priceless:

Hey Uncle M! Sorry I'm late! Nice cameo on the Dusty Show yesterday - I'm not 100% convinced Clay realized it was you on the phone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, V. I'm not either!
  12:36pm Dean:

For example, I first read "Carulli" as "curly," but realized you meant "cruelly."

For some reason I thought of Slonimsky, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Lane Steelpicker:

That ride almost sounded like Freddy Roulette. The Clean, not fuzz

African guitar players got me interested in the sound. It is so much more fun than the west to me.

Vibrators! Pure Mania is such a great album. Perfect opening cut.
Avatar 12:51pm V Priceless:

Vibrators!! Woo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm pacific standard simon:

Dylan Sings Sinatra -- an album so wrong that it will probably turn out to be right.
  12:52pm Dean:

Seconded, Stevel. Oh, dear. Vibrators' first followed by E&tHR's first. Lord, them's was the days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Stevel:

Hey UM. Thanks for keeping me near my desk.

Vibrators are also a tough segue album. Abrupt, abrupt, abrupt.

Eddie and the Hot Rods. Always thought there was a connection between the two (pretty sure I was wrong.) Such similar pub rock roots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

My pleasure, Steve. Not aware of any direct connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm efd:

Similar roots, but I don't think there's any overlap between members or anything like that.

Also, hello!
Avatar 12:56pm V Priceless:

Feelgoods! 40th anniversary of this record, if I'm not mistaken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Stevel:

Its all great, but side two of Pure Mania--Stiff Little Fingers/Wrecked on You/I need a Slave"--most relentless and nasty three-song combo ever. (Not sure there's actually a stats category for that one.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm efd:

Related: When searching Google for info on the Vibrators it would behoove one to include the word "band."
  12:57pm Dean:

To me, that one year between the first E&tHR and the Vibrators made a huge difference. The HR's pub roots were strengthened a year or so later when Graeme Douglas joined.

Love, love, love Dr. Feelgood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Stevel:

Yo, efd! Great show Wednesday. Really looking forward to Les Sans Coulottes.

Search etiquette is everything.
Avatar 12:58pm V Priceless:

@ efd - yes, I love Dr. Feelgood too! Michael Shelley's show tomorrow with Will Birch is gonna be great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

Hiya Evan.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Feelgoods have gigs booked up for next December.
  1:00pm Dean:

Wow, Will Birch. I was just thinking "No Sleep Till Canvey Island" might be a source for linking the Vibrators and the HRs.
Avatar 1:00pm V Priceless:

weirdest gig I ever saw: Dr. Feelgood open for Gentle Giant in '77. Feelgoods were brilliant - the crowd was not. At the end of the gig, Lee yelled "This place sucks and you all suck!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm efd:

ooh, one of my favorite Stranglers songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm pacific standard simon:

No original members, last time I checked.
Avatar 1:01pm V Priceless:

Uncle M on fire!
  1:02pm Dean:

A miserable confession: I had all of these LPs back in the '80s, but dumped 'em, all except the Vibrators.

Another weird Gentle Giant gig: they appeared at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, opening for Gary Wright, Peter Frampton, and Yes. It was a long day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

I'll mention this on mic but E&tHRs are playing dates this year with the 1977 lineup...and maybe, the next artist, as well....
Avatar 1:03pm V Priceless:

@ UM: yes! I saw that E & tHRs news!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Stevel:

No Sleep Till Canvey Island appears to be somewhat rare/pricy. Also drat, my library does not have it.
  1:04pm Dean:

I bought my copy of NSTCI from Birch.
Avatar 1:04pm V Priceless:

I can't live with out my Stranglers / Dr. Feelgood records.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Brian in UK:

Preferred Gentle Giant when they were pop, Simon Dupree and the Big Trousers.
  1:04pm Dean:

Neither can I. Effectively, I'm dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm pacific standard simon:

There was a connection between Feelgood and The Hot Rods, though. What I heard was that one of the major points of contention between Wilko and Lee was Wilko's desire to include his buddy, one-time Hot Rod Lew Lewis, in the Feelgoods. Lew being a harmonica player, this did not go down well with Lee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm pacific standard simon:

Perhaps I am anticipating Uncle Michael's next mic break...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

I believe NSTCI is no longer pricey since Will turned up some crates of unsold copies!
  1:07pm Dean:

And of course Kevin Bacon was involved in the pub rock scene, somehow.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Brian in UK:

Different style but same time. Charlie Harper & UK Subs still touring, must be in his late sixties now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm efd:

Looks like the book is available from Will Birch's site for £20: www.willbirch.com...
(assuming that site is up to date)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm efd:

speaking of this era I'm about a third of the way through this new history of Stiff Records:

Hoping to have the author on my show sometime next month. Lots of pub-rock background in there too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Stevel:

I hope the site is up to date, 'cause I just bought it! Its about $30, shipped to the US. SOLD!!
Avatar 1:10pm kat330:

Had to step away for a bit -- re: Dr. Feelgood: I believe I mentioned here before how much we enjoyed the documentary Oil City Confidential
Avatar 1:10pm V Priceless:

@ efd: very cool!
  1:13pm Dean:

Caveat: NSTCI is a paperback, but well worth it if the scene is your thing. Would love to read the Stiff history, too. I did retain DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED, an album that, were I to be interred (which I won't), I would want to accompnay me in the pine box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Stevel:

There are no coincidences. Too cool, re. M. Shelley interview.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm northguineahills:

I was going to say, a little homage to fabio, nice!
  1:23pm Dean:

Bound to happen, statistically speaking. There are only, what, a couple dozen records shared among FMU DJs, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

It's the album Mr. Giant Man is from, btw.

Maceo's black enough for me and Schooly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Mike East:

@Uncle Michael - I guess it depends on your definition of cool...buncha Lincoln center stuff for next week...mostly broadway singer stuff. I did get Talib Kweli yesterday which I file under "cool"
Avatar 1:59pm Mister Dobalina:

This sounds like sample central!
  2:00pm Kris Holmes:

i love that era of little richard. haven't played soul power in too long.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Mike East:

very hard not to sing along with this Os Mutantes. I remember how much it blew my freakin mind when I first heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

You know the words? dafuq
Avatar 2:23pm ndbob:

Great one here!
  2:24pm Kris Holmes:

awesome, i forgot this warren smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Mike East:

...and by sing along, I don't mean I know portuguese, though I did do an english translation acoustic version of it many years ago when I was obsessed with it. I mostly just sing along with the backup vocals...and the guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Alex In Illinois:

I have been listening today too, sometimes with my smartphone while driving around, but I have been here listening. I just have not been commenting.

Hi UM & everyone! Listening on phone while working so haven't been able to comment, great show :-

Heard Shirley live with my parents not too many years ago. What a bash!

Hiya Holly!

Wow, Dean. Cool.

Hey Holly!

The roller coaster vid and Joe Simon groove were actually in unlikely smooth-slidin' synch for a while. Souler coaster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Santos L Halper:

Hi UM. The upside of my kids being home sick is i got to cut out of work early to hang w/them and catch all of HDT live!

Speaking of being grateful (you@2:30), you planning on being in Chicago early July?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

Santos, I'm afraid that's not in the cards. I sure know a ton of people that are going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Santos L Halper:

Too bad, but i have a feeling it will be recorded ; )
Waiting on my mail-order; been a while since i filled out the old 3x5 card...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I still have the rest of the package I bought to do mail-order in 2009.

Not sure I remember the zip correctly.

My "need more" take-aways today: Sahara Cellphones and Shirley Bassey. Shirley's one of those artists whom, for years, I've been meaning to appreciate more directly, instead of just by happenstance.
Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Lane Steelpicker:

Cool steel work! Do I have to look it up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Uncle Michael:

yep, Lane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

Don't make me let Phil sing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Santos L Halper:

Also was just checking out the Other Minds link you posted on someone else's comments recently. Very interesting...
Avatar 2:57pm still b/p:

Excellent, Mike. You get to run down the hall and listen & watch from a corner?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

I went to the festival a few years ago, Santos. It's very interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm listener james from westwood:

That version was quite lovely. Thanks for that and the excellent tunes that preceded it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Mike East:

yeah, still b/p...there's a window in the door to the studio...and they're not sound proof, so I can hear it. Although I try not to be the creepy guy staring through the window.
Avatar 3:03pm still b/p:

Just carry a clipboard and take notes and check your watch every so often...very busy, attentive and purposeful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks everyone. See you later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Lane Steelpicker:
