Options January 20, 2015: A sweet winter's eve with Don Bikoff.

Popping in to play a few tunes for a wintery night, Don Bikoff is a fingerstyle guitarist who has had a resurgence thanks to the reissue of his debut "Celestial Explosion." Bikoff returned to the studio after that long break to put out last year's "Hallowed Ground." To shake things up a little for this show, Don dropped by for the evening with a couple of guitars and an armload of vinyl to co-host with Irene.

whoa, psychedelic picture, Irene. What time can we expect Mr. Bikoff?

Hi all.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Irene Trudel:

Don is right here! He is programming the music for us tonight in addition to playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Mike East:

Excellent! Well, good evening to both of you, and all the commenters.
Avatar 9:18pm gongoleer:

Hi Irene & Don, I love that even in the north country of Vt. I can hear you. What a treat! Wish I were there. Loving your selections as always. Maybe you'll play something off the "basement tapes". Hey Don, great to hear your voice. I'll be listening till the end. SB

The state of the union attendees should send their applause your way!

Suddenly remembered what's special about Tuesday evening. Not used to the new time yet. Sounds good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Mike Sin:

Well, this was a nice surprise to hear Don Bikoff on WFMU after a long ride home. I was quite fortunate to engineer a set from Don Bikoff on Jeffrey Davison's show a few years ago, and it was quite a superb experience.
  9:54pm JakeGould:

Loving this!
  9:54pm JakeGould:

How’s the Union? Anyone know the state it’s in?
  9:56pm Guitar man:

This is a dream show for me Irene xoxo
  10:05pm Robert:

I just got back from a political meeting, and this is a good refuge from more politics in the form of the state of the union address.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:06pm redkayak:

This IS an awesome set...
  10:06pm JakeGould:

Personally putting the kibosh on political discussions and gentrification discussions in 2015. Just sick of it all.
Avatar 10:10pm gongoleer:

i'm watching lips move but hear nothing new being said. The music is a sweet & finer alternative. A huge thank you.

“Yes they do exist in pockets throughout the U.S.” Not in my pocket.

Ratings are through the roof. Your audience is international and O'bama's is mainly National.

My sister belongs to a Sweet Adelines Society, they always perform with a barbershop quartet...she's in rural Colorado...they compete all over, vieing for a national championship.

Hi Irene.

Oh snap. I just realized it's Tuesday. Not Monday.

Van, is “Sonny & Cher” playing on your clock radio?
Avatar 10:23pm Van in DC:

Irene - loved your engineering for Caitlin on Jeffrey's show this past Saturday. For anyone who missed it:

Avatar 10:26pm Van in DC:

Mr. Bikoff, wanted to ask you if classical guitar has been any influence on you?

In particular, I can't help but think of David Russell when I sometimes hear you play. And that is meant as a huge compliment.
Avatar 10:28pm Van in DC:

No pinkeys! :)
Avatar 10:29pm Van in DC:

Thanks for that Irene & Don.

Okay Don, you now have to be a semi-regular co-host for Irene's show.

We're expecting that.

Just so you know.
Avatar 10:41pm Van in DC:

I just never can get enough of Don's guitar. Many thanks for showing up.
Avatar 10:44pm Van in DC:

Samantha Fish - incredible blues guitarist / vocalist, also helps out. FMU has no idea who she is sadly.

Irene, great show. Don Bikoff is awesome.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Don's picking the music for the whole show tonight.
Avatar 10:56pm Van in DC:

Oh! I figured the John Fahey would have been you Irene :)
Avatar 10:57pm Van in DC:

So far, Don's stuff is a kind of curious mix between Irene / Doug / Jeffrey from what I have heard so far. I likes. ;)
  10:58pm Carmichael:

Hi Van! And yay, Don!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Irene, is it in your power to announce over the air that the state of WFMU is just super? Actually, it's probably one blown transmitter away from financial troubles. Tonight, it's in fine shape.
Avatar 11:01pm Van in DC:

Now see, this right here is about as far away from classical guitar as I can envision. But I like it.
  11:02pm Carmichael:

That's Mississippi Fred McDowell.
Avatar 11:02pm Van in DC:

snap crackle pop - love that too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, right Van, the Fahey is my choice for talkover. I wasn't really counting it.
Avatar 11:03pm Van in DC:

Now I'm really kind of curious if Mr. Bikoff is a fan of Doug's Give the Drummer Some show...?
Avatar 11:04pm gongoleer:

Anybody ever hear of British guitarist Davey Graham? What an inventive player.
Avatar 11:05pm Van in DC:

I missed the Fahey playing but glad I know you at least a little by now :)
  11:06pm Carmichael:

Weren't we just talking about Lightnin Hopkins/Albert Collins/Texas Alexander over on the Drummer stream?
Avatar 11:07pm Van in DC:

NOW we're talkin'! (blues)

Avatar 11:09pm Van in DC:

Avatar 11:16pm Van in DC:

And of course, someone is snapping photos to post later...?
  11:16pm Carmichael:

Patrick Sky!
  11:19pm Carmichael:

Davey Graham, poor loon that he is, is a master guitarist. Just don't mention Bert Jansch or John Redbourn, he goes nuts about those 2.
Avatar 11:19pm gongoleer:

@van in dc, i believe he's deceased but was really prolific and as I said innovative. You'll be surprised! He had a lot of influence on my appreciation & understanding of guitar players after hearing Don way back when.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Mike East:

Been really enjoyable tonight...great one to archive! Time to lock up. I'll catch the end in the car. Peace all.
Avatar 11:20pm gongoleer:

Van, his famous work was Mood something, Blues Mood, Blues Indigo, jaysis its been too long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for the update, gongoleeer! I often wonder about these older musicians and should take more time to look 'em up on the web. They're a lot easier to find now.
Avatar 11:26pm Van in DC:

Well, not famous to me but I live a sheltered life. That's why I'm here at FMU trying to expand my horribly limited horizons. :)
  11:27pm JakeGould:

Van, don’t be too hard on yourself. The Internet does make it easier to research forgotten artists and even support them. All good.
Avatar 11:27pm Van in DC:

Ah okay well still safe travels Mike.

And, okay, Irene. Thanks for "search"ing and not, you know, "googling" :)
  11:36pm Carmichael:

This sounds like a good Am blues tune. The E7 gives it away ...

Thanks Jake! One of my all time faves from the amazing minds of the Fleischers.
Avatar 11:41pm Van in DC:

See....somewhere right in here is where I can get a classical guitar kind of influence from like a David Russell. I don't know why exactly but there it is.
  11:41pm JakeGould:

You’re welcome Irene. Cab Calloway collaborated a lot with the Fleischers. www.youtube.com...

Avatar 11:45pm Van in DC:

just three more hours to play live Don. Keep going.
  11:46pm JakeGould:

“The Fleischers put popular, modern music at the center of many of their films, building entire cartoons around jazz legends such as Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Don Redman. These cartoons often featured the Fleischers’ signature combination of live action and animation; in fact the earliest known footage of Cab Calloway in performance can be seen in the Fleischer classic Minnie the Moocher.” www.fleischerstudios.com...

OK, HERE'S Fright Train.
  11:48pm JakeGould:

“Old Man of the Mountain” is creepy. The old man of the mountain gets a hippo pregnant and then the rest of the cartoon is basically him harassing Betty Boop.
