Avatar 7:17pm Holly in NC:

Hi Jill B! Happy New year!
  7:18pm MrFab:

The Ukrainians were founded in the UK by a Ukrainian-descended member of the Brit band the Wedding Present. I think he recruited actual musicians from the old country.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm davex:

Hey Gary! Congratulations!

The Ukrainians are UK-based, mostly with Ukrainian ancestry, I think.

Great to hear these a second time!
Avatar 7:36pm hyde:

down with science! up with bias! (this is all working out just fine)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

Thanks, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 7:38pm Holly in NC:

Just fyi Gary, I only longterm clicky stars songs that I don't own or have access to - so my clicky star list is not entirely representative of my faves. For example, tonight clicky starred Os Mutantes to remind myself to go back & listen to whole album, then will delete clicky star at some point in next couple of weeks. Etc. Spanner in the works, eh? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Gary:

OMG, that is as thrilling as it is OCD, Holly :)
Avatar 7:46pm Holly in NC:

@Gary, in truth have been so crazed & dealing with limited computer access for so long that I am MANY months behind in cleaning my clicky star list. So just a wanna be OCD at the moment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

Rich! Be careful, there appear to be two cats right above you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Rich in Washington:

I don't get to comment much, but your show is often the soundtrack to me cooking epic dinner for me and the missus.
Avatar 7:51pm Holly in NC:

@Rich - Can't speak for Hyde, but my cat prefers snakes, birds, & voles to mice by a wide, wide margin. I think you're safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Gary:

I'm usually cooking during Doug's Tuesday show and eating during it or the beginning of Jesse's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Rich in Washington:

My whole life is a blur of cooking, cats, and car repair bills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm listener james from westwood:

That little bit there in "Procrustean Method" would make a killer ringtone.
Avatar 7:53pm hyde:

@Holly my one eyed cat couldn't catch a cold, her one backyard attempt at leaping at a squirrel ended in a face full of fence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Rich in Washington:

This is awesome! Never heard of them before, but then I don't track the world hip hop beat very closely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rich in Washington:

Mr. Fab is here!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Doug Schulkind:

'bout to slink off to dinner with my iPhone playing you quietly between my knees. It won't work, though. My daughter, who has heard "no electronics at the table" too many times, will surely skewer me for being a hypocrite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

Bon apetite, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Gary:

Y'all wanna hear more short songs next set or two really long ones?
Avatar 7:55pm Holly in NC:

@hyde - oh, poor, undignified kitty. I can't imagine the hours of paw licking & flicky tail that ensued. Did she at some point deign to allow you to give her a treat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Rich in Washington:

@Doug: I can get away with that now that all my kids are grown. Wired my kitchen for sound and all.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Doug Schulkind:

I just Starred this episode. I hope it doesn't set in motion some crazy feedback loop!
Avatar 7:57pm doca:

Hey, Gary! Checkin' in for Bodega's birthday party only now. I was watching Repo Man
Avatar 7:57pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - Can you not play music at table? I mean via a "stereo system" ? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Gary:

Doca! I remember that film well -- I wrote a paper about it in college, all about the "auto" and the "self," if I remember ...
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

@Holly oh, she gets plenty of treats. but she also spent the next month of backyard time staring at the spot the squirrel disappeared over...
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

@Gary short songs! short songs!
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

Excellent show Gary! I need to go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Rich in Washington:

Repo Man's on my short list for films I have to watch every year or so. So much greatness contained therein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Gary:

See ya Bob!
Avatar 8:01pm doca:

Yeah I was lacking that on my cultural upbringing. It has much of a Big Lebowski-feel, or Big Lebowski tackles on the same cultural craziness than it.
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

Book Off is so great. haven't been in awhile, though...
Avatar 8:03pm Holly in NC:

@hyde - this is weird, but I'd suggest getting her some 'fake prey' for her birthday present - a raw chicken neck, for example. Can be served outside or in a bathtub... my mental picture of your cat staring forlornly through 1 eye at the escaped squirrel is just too sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm listener james from westwood:

Sorry for not responding; I've been cleaning up in the kitchen. I like your short/long plan.
Avatar 8:05pm hyde:

@Holly heh, there's no reason to feel sorry for her. she's content with her lot, believe me!
Avatar 8:09pm Holly in NC:

@hyde - Oh, I can tell she's beyond adored and has a great, great life. But as my 3 often remind me, things can ALWAYS get better ;-)
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

@Holly a chicken neck is a good idea, i'll admit. I've only ever used those to catch crabs before...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Gary:

There's a terrific interview with Cui Jian that showed up on YouTube not too long ago, although the interview is from around the time of this song. Well worth looking up (I can't go to YouTube myself right now because I forgot to mute it before the show) ...
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Uncle Michael:

I like this a lot.
Avatar 8:20pm Holly in NC:

@hyde - yeah, the cartilaginous bones in a raw chicken neck won't splinter & kill your girl, and if she goes for it it's a ton of fun to watch. If she's too domesticated, change tacks & go catch a crab or 2 for yourself! Yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gary:

Uncle Michael!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 8:29pm hyde:

who's your friend when things get rough?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Uncle Michael:

Can't do a little cause he can't do enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm listener james from westwood:

In honor of Amanda Nazario, re: this talk of chicken necks, this Simpsons snippet:
Lunchlady Doris: At last the world is safe, eh, Fallout Boy?
Ralph Wiggum: What's for lunch tomorrow?
Casting Director: Next!
Ralph Wiggum: Chicken necks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

She's doing a live Simpson's show in Brooklyn soon, I think -- I know I signed up to get announcements for it on FB ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm listener james from westwood:

You are correct! Between deadlines and distance it'll be a tough one for me to make, but it sounds bloody awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm listener james from westwood:

1/26, 2 Mondays hence, at Nitehawk Cinema.
Avatar 8:49pm hyde:

wow, this song is kind of epic. i don't remember this from first time around. i either missed it or my brain doesnt work so good anymore (2nd possibility more likely than the first)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gary:

I played it on a fill-in show for Destination:Out
Avatar 8:54pm hyde:

@Gary ah, so i did miss it. i never got around to backtracking to that one, maybe my brain does still work. maybe.

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

No. What is it?
  9:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I love Bez Bèk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

A collaboration between poets Ron Padgett and Ted Berrigan and the poet and artist Joe Brainard. I mentioned it because I thought it had a funny collage o Deputy Dan, but I'm totally wrong (again!) and it's actually of Policeman Dan. Never mind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Ike:

Hello all you hep cats!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Uncle Michael:

Deputy Dan is a Firesign Theater thing, by way of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Gary:

That's right. My GOD I loved Firesign Theatre. I had every single record, up to, I don't remember now how late I followed them ... but pretty late, deep into the 80s anyway
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Uncle Michael:

It's from the Dear Friends radio shows on KPFK. I think it's included on the "Shoes For Industry" compilation.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Uncle Michael:

They're translating a LACSD Spanish language children's pamphlet into Firesign English.

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

I have the complete radio shows on my media server. At 45 minutes+ each, I often skip past them when they come up on shuffle but when I have time to let one run, it's always rewarding. Listening to the four of them sit around the table and jam on live radio is kind of amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Gary:

Play them on your show this Friday (or someday soon) pretty please!

Sasha Frere-Jones is leaving the NYer to work for lyric annotation website. Discuss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Gary:

Night, Holly!
Avatar 9:17pm hyde:

@Gary his reasoning sounded eminently reasonable to me when he said he didn't want to stay up until 4 am anymore and you can annotate lyrics during the day
  9:18pm Doug Schulkind:

One thing I don't know: whatever the hell lyric annotation is.

One thing I do know: The New Yorker will be so much better with SFJ out of the picture.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know why anyone would get paid to annotate lyrics. I really don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

I remember that quote, Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Ike:

I just read an article about Genius. It's yet another company getting millions thrown at it for talking a good game while actually doing, well, nothing much that will actually bring any cash rolling in. Maybe Sasha was attracted to the free Seamless food.
  9:23pm Doug Schulkind:

No really, what exactly is lyric annotation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gary:

He might just be tired. I never liked his criticism, but I just sort of assume that the New Yorker isn't really going to ever publish music criticism that's going to interest me on any particular level.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Uncle Michael:

That's my take too, Ike.

I visited the site for the first time there in reference to something I'm playing on Friday. It was annotated by the person that made the piece. It's interesting as far as it goes. It basically gave me the provenance of various elements. I just don't see the market potential for this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gary:

Doug, I'm not sure, but I imagine it's like close-reading in an English class or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Ike:

Read this:

The article contains annotation examples. Mouse over the yellowed bits to see the annotation (it appears at left on my desktop; overlaid on mobile).
Avatar 9:25pm Holly in NC:

Dear God, someone please pay me to annotate lyrics. 6th grade I spent almost an entire year annotating/transcribing the Complete Beatles songbook - which only included LMHS compositions, so I laboriously added in every single song they covered, and every friggin' single "oooohh" & "aahhh" & "woooo" & aside in every dang song. In ink, after pencil drafts. So yes Gary maybe OCD. ;-)
  9:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 9:25pm hyde:

i think the only annotated lyrics site i've ever gone to is the one that breaks down "Paul's Boutique"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Gary:

I'm not entirely against close-reading in pop music ... the Public Enemy 33-1/3 book goes through at least one track and lets you know where each of the samples comes from an how they resonate in the context of the present song
Avatar 9:33pm hyde:

@Gary yeah, that's like the Beastie's site. it gives you the samples and explains the references to Sadaharu Oh and Otis the Drunk, which will probably be useful when all these references are totally dated. Like they are today, i guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Ike:

The New Yorker is a really good magazine. They published a lot of great stuff by Seymour Hersh back in the W. years.
Avatar 9:35pm hyde:

i love love love Calvin Trillin's food pieces! and yeah, Richard Brody is sometimes ok on film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm listener james from westwood:

Must toddle off to bed, but enjoyed the anniversary show; thanks, Gary!!
  9:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Hendrik Hertzberg. And yes, he wrote Jimmy Carter's famous (infamous) "malaise" speech.

And I love the New Yorker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm coelacanth:

rolling stone & nme have got to be as bad or worse,in regards to music critique.
(...or am i thinking of melody maker"?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm coelacanth:

...and those are specifically geared toward music.
Avatar 9:40pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - That "malaise" speech profoundly changed the course of history.
1) I think it's a great speech
2) Not many people shared that opinion.
Could you imagine our world if Carter had been able to prevail as the voice of the US?
Avatar 9:40pm hyde:

i could clicky star this song ten thousand times and it still wouldn't be enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

It's one of Lata's finest moments. To say nothing of Nargis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Ike:

The TV criticism by Emily Nussbaum is excellent. If you ever want to discover some cool new shows, read her columns. She's much better than the film critics, esp. the bland Denby. Anthony Lane is very funny though... for a crusty old crank. (Get off my lawn, you kids and your comic book movies!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gary:

Yeah, Anthony Lane cracks me up. I almost never care about the realm of movies he's writing about. (Which makes me more of a lawn-crier than he, probably.)
  9:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly in NC
I was proud to air the entire speech on its most recent anniversary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gary:

I loved that show, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm coelacanth:

i don't remember that Carter speech; but if all world leaders thought like Jimmy Carter,(aside from his religious beliefs) there wouldn't be all this killing and people control for the sake of greed.
  9:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I think the New Yorker adding by subtracting another critic: David Denby. I really loathed his pieces.
Avatar 9:48pm hyde:

@Ike agreed, Emily Nussbaum is good too, though I don't read her consistently. I sort of like Lane at times too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm coelacanth:

'song makes me laugh aloud!
Avatar 10:02pm hyde:

so much for the paper anniversary. onward to.....whatever is the next one. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm coelacanth:
