Favoriting January 6, 2015: That's so 2014!

The start of a new year always fills you with trepidation. All those days, hours, minutes stretching out before you. Who can help but feel the pressure to use the time wisely? What is worse than "wasting time"?

"You're wasting time!"

"We've wasted too much time!"

"Stop wasting time!"

You feel you wasted much time in 2014. It wasn't a bad year, overall. There were some personal and professional triumphs. But still: there's this nagging sense that you didn't do enough to get to where you'd like to be.

Do you know where that is?

You spend so much time chasing a goal and when you reach it your inner voice asks "Is that all there is?" You question the need for constant betterment, for "goal setting". You have no idea why you can't just be content as you are. The new year rolls around and you're supposed to "resolve" to stop doing this, to start doing that. So you can be a better you. The you you are isn't good enough, apparently.

You say the words "personal growth" to yourself and all you can think of is a carbunkle. Or a tumor.

Fuck personal growth. The only resolutions to be made this year are these:

1) Help others.

2) Declutter.

These resolutions presuppose that A) you're already helping yourself and B) you have too much stuff.

Self-improvement is wonderful. But when are you realized?

Tonight, I'll be asking about what kind of year 2014 was and your hopes for 2015. What were the things that sustained you through the year just ended? How do you plan to improve yourself in the year ahead? We're looking forward and back on Aerial View. Call 201-209-9368 to join in.

George of Troy:

I just came across my (now vintage) "Effete Snob" button the other day! Happy New Year, Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I certainly agree on the declutter. I have lots and lots of clutter to dispose of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Mike East:

I hate NYE because of all the pressure and expectation people put on it. New Years resolutions are BS. If there's something about yourself that you'd like to change, do it now. Don't wait for another year to roll around.
I'm with you on decluttering.
I don't know that anyone is ever fully realized. I'm always trying to be better...but I don't obsess about it.

Aaron in Minneapolis:

The legislators are either going to be corrupted or framed, one or the other. Or in Senetors Wellstones case killed

Crochet is to knitting like winter camping is to summer camping. One is harder and makes you feel like a bad ass, but both are obsolete.

Aaron in Minneapolis:

By the way, why did the intro say Friday instead of Tuesday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
dale:

sullivan is north or orange county. he's hearing the mt. hope transmitter, which is stronger than the 91.1 signal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

About ten years ago, Chris's show was on Fridays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm

except for socks. Knitted wool socks are cool beans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Mike East:

more recently than that as well, Ken

anyone tried the socks with copper in them? i want to believe, but think it's probably akin to storing your razor blade under a pyramid to keep it sharp.

Marc Maron's interview with PT Anderson is a great interview (though I'm only halfway through). Check that out if you haven't yet, Chris.

frankly, it would be a lot more useful if people gave to alzheimer's research than ALS.

I'm also doing the declutter thing.
