Skiddledydoobop Squirrel in the hizzy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Stevel:

Its the thieving squirrel! Or, perhaps, the privacy-rights squirrel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am listener james from westwood:

Bubs, the Bubonic Plague Awareness Squirrel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Amanda:

I've really become a fan of this squirrel in the past day or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Stevel:

So far, so good!
Avatar 12:03pm KP:

Radio on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm sugarwolf:

I saw someone letting a squirrel eat from her hand in Union Square Park this weekend.
Avatar 12:05pm KP:

That's nuts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Doug Schulkind:

As a resident of Squirrel Hill, I approve. (Though it could have a little more hill.)
  12:08pm Dean:

Last Saturday the spouse and I went to a local pub to hear Robbie Dunbar (Earth Quake, Berserkly co-owner) perform. Al Chan (Rubinoos) was in the band. Dunbar often plays these small joints with Greg Kihn's drummer, Larry Lynch, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Amanda:

OMG I love seeing this fat lil squirrel dance to my records

@sugarwolf, they are shameless! I've had them beg for my food many times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm sugarwolf:

I had a squirrel JUMP ON ME once when I was eating a cupcake in the park.
Avatar 12:12pm KP:

Wow. What a Moby Grape song. Seems great but not familiar
  12:14pm Dean:

Dunbar and band played a handful of Who tunes, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Amanda:

@Dean, how great! I hope this first set is bringing back fond memories of last weekend, then.
Avatar 12:16pm KP:

The squirrel kind of moonwalks
Avatar 12:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Moonless Wh♂ - not so bad...
  12:16pm Dean:

Indeed! They also delivered a great cover of "Dead Flowers."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Stevel:

Doug S: Years ago, good friends lived in Squirrel Hill. Not much flatland there, eh?

Lil squirrel of ill squirrel? Both, sez I.
Avatar 12:18pm KP:

We have black squirrels where i live. and gray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Amand:

Squirrel Hill rules!
Avatar 12:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...not only not bad w/out Keithy - I'm actually appreciating the *drummer* here...a little metrical for this lot, certainly - but rather good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm listener james from westwood:

Don't eat meats?! If I did that, someone would come in here and say, "Hey! Goober! Where's the meat?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Lizardner Dave:

Underrated Who song even with the cliched "cut you just like a knife" line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Mike East:

whoa, how strange...I think I just remembered a dream I had about a video of Keith Moon describing how he came up with the opening drum fill for baba o'riley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Doug Schulkind:

I beg to differ. There are absolutely NO rules in Squirrel Hill!
Avatar 12:26pm KP:

I was supposed to do a lot of stuff today. This is the better Scenario
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Amanda:

Hey, do you all dream about musicians with frequency? I am curious about this.
Avatar 12:29pm bpd:

I love "Come On" and have nothing else to add here at the moment.
Avatar 12:31pm KP:

i sleep with radio on, so about music, not musicians. Except Linda Ronstadt
  12:31pm Dean:

How can you have music without frequency?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Mike East:

I do. I especially enjoy the dreams where I'm playing music, though sometimes it can be frustrating. Once I was supposed to be jamming with Lindsey Buckingham and I could't get my gear to work right. He was kinda pissed.
Avatar 12:32pm KP:

Dean, that is an excellent point
Avatar 12:33pm ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Mike East:

You Better You Bet got overplayed for me on Q104.3. I used to get really annoyed by the bridge for some reason. I've come around now and I enjoyed hearing it here.
Avatar 12:34pm ndbob:

andas a big fan of rodents I approve too!
Avatar 12:35pm KP:

Anything by the Who that got played on "regular" radio got way overplayed. Anything actually good was totally ignored.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Stevel:

I am stupid-excited about Jonathan Richman on Michael Shelley. Ho-lee crap!
Avatar 12:35pm KP:

you bet
Avatar 12:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There must be a word for prescient dreaming - clairnombulent - ? Anyhow - MikeE apparently is one...I think it's common to dream about playing fabulous music - & then waking up & looking @ yer hands & going - 'huhh??'...
...I was tidying up & old Uncut mags surfaced & have just been reading about TheWh♂ (which *I'd* do anyhow...or any Wh♂) & Jesus&Mary by way of BobbyGillespie...
@KP: As w/ any/everyone...
Avatar 12:37pm KP:

I Was a Teenaged Squirrel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Mike East:

and btw - baba o'riley originally had Keith Moon whacking a cowbell to keep time with the lowrey organ...according to my dream. they cut it out in the mix
Avatar 12:43pm northguineahills:

The squirrels that were stealing my jalapenos from my fire escape and then discarding them b/c after biting them, they realized they weren't tasty treats (and then burying others in my other potted plants) were rather fat and healthy. The only thing that got them to stop, as they weren't not scared of me, was when I poured cold water on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Amanda:

It is funny that I completely don't remember You Better You Bet being played on Q104. I was 3 when it came out, but assume it got played past then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Amanda:

Very good suggestion Jeff! Hi Jeff!
Avatar 12:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great YT about KeithMoon:
...just reading about him being so pilled out he had no memory of doing 'Substitute' & accusing the band of using another (like there could be) - & in this vid they say he never practiced, except his mad life perhaps being 'practice' for his style - & is said he had to re-learn to be 'himself' before every Tour...sheesh ! !...
Avatar 12:52pm KP:

This super close to his own Im A Lonesome Fugitive
Avatar 12:52pm northguineahills:

These days, "branded man" means Nike sponsorship.
Avatar 12:54pm KP:

  12:54pm Dean:

Can we get some Jimmy LaFave? "Bus to St. Cloud," maybe? Or the John Waite tune he covers so well?
Avatar 12:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...nice Townes phrasing ! : ) ...don't think they got TownesTunes for karaoke @ the local...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm listener james from westwood:

Good singalong candidate! My local Tex-Mex plays this and I have to keep from looking around b/c it makes me misty.
Avatar 12:55pm ndbob:

very nice Amanda!
Avatar 12:55pm KP:

The beauty of radio is i can sing background w/o offending anyone except the cat
  12:55pm Dave B. (@BuckyKatt):

These country tunes got me in the mood to head down to the nearest saloon & have a beer with the local squirrel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Jeff Golick:

Must be fun to sing "federales"
  12:56pm Dean:

Tamales made with feathers.
Avatar 12:57pm KP:

Avatar 1:03pm Mugsy:

That record is on spotify
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm listener james from westwood:

Mr. Burns refers to the Feds at one point as the federales. This from a guy who probably met Pancho Villa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Jeff Golick:

That Native North America comp is truly a thing of beauty. There's a volume two in the works, I gather; more southern in focus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

BTW, Amanda's recent fill-in for Nate the K was a total treat AND, by law and by custom, included a Simpsons Time: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Jeff Golick:

I hate a parade.

But I love The Banana Splits.

So this is a tough one for me.
Avatar 1:07pm KP:

Agree on that fill-in! Need more warning though

He'll be OK, James. Apparently he has found a new thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Mike East:

oh my god...my family used to spin this record constantly when I was growing up (wildfire)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Amanda:

Disco Stu first appears in Homer's Barbershop Quartet, I think? But he is named immediately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar 1:32pm ndbob:

I've always liked this song - never understood why it gets trashed so much..... this sounds like an alternate take or rerecording
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm listener james from westwood:

There is likely a term of art for the way the Simpsons writers do that sort of gag re: Disco Stu embodying the sight gag, where what seems like a throwaway phrase becomes something in the show, but I don't know what it is. Another example of this sort of humor: When Lisa in "Lisa the Vegetarian" says, "They can't seriously expect us to believe this tripe?!" and Skinner immediately hands out tripe to the kids. Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Amanda:

@ndbob, it may be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

ndbob, much of the dislike for it may be just folks reflexively hating the 70s and/or its music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

To which I say, they can cram it with walnuts.
Avatar 1:35pm ndbob:

@james that could well be - I've had arguments about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Jeff Golick:

I'm guessing it's mostly to do with how Michael spells his last name.
Avatar 1:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

friendsgiving is the best, cant wait for turkey day, enjoyed the lisa's pony coverage, great show today!
  1:39pm Sean:

I thought he first appeared in the episode where George Bush moves in across the street. I love the character because it reeked of a one off joke, but yet he is still around. But you are right, he is named immediately, so not exactly the same as the characters you mentioned, Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Jeff Golick:

Watching that squirrel reminds me: have you seen that cat vid where the cat's tongue involuntarily sticks out when she (he?) hears packing tape being pulled off the roll? Can't get enough of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm listener james from westwood:

Typo from my copyediting: "the situation results in family riffs." Sounds musical!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm efd:

I'm having a hard time imagining anyone doing a bad version of "The Mighty Quinn."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Amanda:

@efd, I'm trying to imagine that but I suspect a "bad" version might be even better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Amanda:

  1:47pm P-90:

@DJ Amanda: Just wanted to say thanks for another excellent show, had a chance to hear most of it while working today, always a treat to listen live instead of hitting the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Amanda:

@LJfW, I am not sure if there's a real term in comedy for that kind of "literal" gag - but you make me feel ashamed to forget what I should have remembered from script-writing school!
  1:48pm P-90:

And the squirrel rocks.

  1:52pm P-90:

I find it hard to forgive Gilbert for bumming me out so righteously as a child with "Alone Again (Naturally)": sweet droning melody, soothing voice, horrifyingly downer lyrics...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

@Amanda: Maybe it's something that arose first from the Simpsons and doesn't even have a formal term. No need to be ashamed! Your learning likely is what makes your Simpsons analysis each week so authoritative and sharp.
