Favoriting November 4, 2014: Vote For Me & I'll Set You Free!
Today is, of course, Election Day. All the talk is about the GOP taking both the House and the Senate and, depending on what news sources you trust, it's either a foregone conclusion or still up in the air. The big questions are: does it matter and who will actually turn out to vote? I know I will be going to the polls today. Even though I live in a solidly blue part of a mostly blue state, I haven't yet become cynical enough to forego voting, despite the numerous voices telling me "It doesn't matter."

I've always had an interest in politics, from my early punk rock days playing songs with titles like "Welfare For The Rich" to appearing on bills with bands like Reagan Youth. When I moved to New Jersey in the mid-80's my real education began with my befriending of the Nicastro family. My first New Jersey job was at a telemarketing company in Dumont, where Doris Nicastro was my boss. Her son Andy worked there as well and before long they were inviting me to their house in Waldwick, where we'd sit around and review the latest Trenton and White House shenanigans and discuss political theory. After the family relocated to Seattle, daughter Judy Nicastro - who's been an Aerial View guest - ended up on the City Council. I credit the Nicastros with helping me articulate what's at the root of the never-ending struggle between the haves and the have-nots in this nation.

Politics has been a touchstone of Aerial View. The very first edition of this newsletter, back on Feb. 3rd of this year, featured a follow-up to an Aerial View I'd done with Mark Moran of Weird NJ fame, all about Chris Christie and the Bridgegate Scandal. Christie has been trying to keep a lower profile (insert weight-loss surgery joke here) but his natural bullying instincts reared their ugly head once more when he recently shouted down New Jersey Shore activist and co-creator of finishthejobnj.org Jim Keady at a Hurricane Sandy remembrance event in Belmar, NJ. Many pundits are saying Christie's outburst might be the final nail in the coffin for his Presidential ambitions. Personally, I feel the people of New Jersey are suffering for Christie's ego.

I've reached out to Jim Keady to join me on Aerial View tonight and he's confirmed. Today is, of course, Election Day and Jim, I'm sure, will be busy. But I'm hoping the ten or fifteen minutes we'll talk will jumpstart a conversation about activism, voting and elections. Did you ever become part of a cause? Have you volunteered to effect change? Have you ever gone to a protest or protested anything? What about a vote you regret? Ever vote for someone in whom you found yourself disappointed? Call 201-209-9368 and throw your hat in the ring!

Hello Chris! Hi all
  6:08pm
Robert:

I'm on your voice mail now as candidate (for a few more hours) for NY assembly, AD 80; I left my phone #. If you'd rather we use the on-air number, I can do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Ken:

The station did not reach the goal actually. Still 27 grand away from the overall goal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
dale:

i appreciate that the junk mail and robo calls end today. nothing told me where a candidate stood, only that the opposing candidate was 'dangerous' to our liberty or our economy.
  6:15pm
Robert:

And, dale, usually that statement was correct.
  6:16pm
JakeGould:

Well, I paid my pledges. So hey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
chris:

Jim's story of realization of poverty and suffering reminds me of the story of Guatama Siddartha, Buddha, who after seeing the suffering outside the gates of his palace, dedicated his life to trying to ease the suffering of all humanity.

Kathy:

can't understand what is being said!!

  6:25pm
Kathy:

the recording Chris played sounded totally muffled.... here at least ~
could not really hear the entire exchange -
everything else sounds great!
  6:26pm
Kathy:

some playback issue that's all
  6:30pm
Robert:

Kathy, I think the problem is common to "realities" that are recorded in a crowd like that.
  6:33pm
jon:

good show chris...important show for us in nj...and its good for everybody in the rest of the country to hear about his ineptitude and bullying
Avatar 6:39pm
Jeff:

I hear it fine!

Ken From Hyde Park:

I can hear it clearly. I hear a doofus.
  6:40pm
Robert:

Funny, I heard it OK the 1st time. Left minus right, left plus right...all the same to my ears, it seems.

There's about 1000 hamburgers I'm going to have tonight before I have dinner with you buddy!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm

I can't wait to watch Christie go down in flames - don't tell him he can't do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
dale:

christie going down in flames is one big barbecue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Marcel M:

All you can eat, Dale!!

Mike East:

I voted today. There were three republican candidates for the 3 seats on the town council with no opposition, so I abstained, since I don't have a choice anyway.
Also...what's a surrogate? I voted for it, but honestly have no idea what a surrogate is. Is that bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

What about the Christie scandal a few years ago where he helicoptered to his kid's game? Was the money ever repaid?

Listener 102365:

My congressman - WA District 7 - is Crazy Jim McDermott. I think he represents the people of Seattle pretty accurately.
I'd vote for a Republican if they made sense, but not a lot of them do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I voted today. Some candidates and three measures were on the ballot.
  6:59pm
Listener 102365:

That last robo call sounded a lot like Dave Emory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Marcel M:

Thanks Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Marcel M:

I thought so too Listener 102365!!!
  7:02pm
Robert:

Listener 102365, did he sound like Dave Emory before or after surgery?
  7:03pm
Robert:

Speaking of which, he's sounding a lot better tonight. Still nothing like the old voice, of course, but noticeably less Fuddish. I didn't catch the recording date.
  5:24pm
murcury:

I noticed immediately that Christie clip was out of phase for some reason...that's why your guest couldn't hear the call.
