Our October Silent Fundraiser is coming to an end. We’re offering several enticements to nudge you into parting with a paltry amount of your hard earned $$$. First of these is that making a pledge of any amount allows you to enter your pet into WFMUs first ever mascot contest. Snap a pic of your favorite mammal or that toadstool whose shape you’ve become particularly fond of, and post it along with your pledge. I further propose a mascot contest for the Zzzzzzero Hour program. Pledge to MY show and I’ll put your animals/plants in the running to be the symbol of this program. Just email billm at wfmu dot org a copy so I can post it on my playlist. Don't forget pledges of 50 dollars gets you the FMU Under(water) Dog or Illuminati Cat T-shirt.

Avatar 4:25am Sem Chumbo:

Poor Bubbles. What did he do that was so bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26am Fran:

Favourite TH album probably Fear of Music but not much flab on any record until the Byrne free record. Also loved the ridiculousness of the really long and thin box set you cant easily fit on any shelf!
Avatar 4:26am Bill Mac:

No matter my friend - you can always say hello twice.

Avatar 4:32am Brian in UK:

Our esteemed DJ is not only playing 45s, but commenting and no doubt picking his nose as well. This deserves a PLEDGE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am Fran:

Bill- in celebration of the new XTC CD/BluRay issue of Drums and Wires do we get Making Plans for Nigel later on crackly 7"?
  4:40am marmalade kitty:

Bill, The stone pony. Do you know it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am Guido from Cologne:

Kay Winding "More":
This sounds like a late 60ies recording inspired by an early 60ies Joe Meek production.
Avatar 4:48am Sem Chumbo:

Beefheart played St. John's Newfoundland once, an airport lounge bar, I think. At the conclusion of the show, there were calls for More, More !
He whistled that tune, and walked off stage.
Or so I am told.
Avatar 4:49am Bill Mac:

it reminds me of telstar
Avatar 4:51am Bill Mac:

That beefheart guy was always walking offstage
  4:52am marmalade kitty:

Johnny Marr played an impromptu performance at Night & Day cafe in Manchester last year. It was the beginning of his solo career. There is a single resident evil trying to have the cafe quietened down. pending court action. There is a massive petition to protect the club which has been established for 25 years. He's been living there 18 months or so complaining..?
Avatar 4:54am Sem Chumbo:

Little Richard seems rather sedate in this version, pedestrian, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am Fran:

I would love it had Beefheart actually done a music for airports type thing - can you imagine it!
Avatar 4:57am Sem Chumbo:

@Fran: Beefheartian muzak! Mind-blowing concept.
Avatar 5:00am Brian in UK:

Loading this comp.
Avatar 5:03am Brian in UK:

Red eyed Ratty has my vote. Looks like someone has just taken his tablet away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05am Fran:

I'm not sure that its quite as straightforward as single Resident Evil vs Innocent Club? - from what I hear from people living in the town and who are familiar with both parties -there is a lot of spin around the petition and there are many more complaints/matters not being shouted out. Great venue though - always enjoy a night there!
Avatar 5:07am Andy in Berlin:

@ Kitty - you mean the club on the Jersey Shore?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08am Fran:

Music For Clearing Airports - Captain Beefheart and the Duty Free Band

Avatar 5:14am Sem Chumbo:

#Brian: love that clip, have it bookmarked.
Want to pl;ay guitar like Zoot Horn Rollo? He gives guitar lessons! www.zoothornrollo.com
  5:15am marmalade kitty:

Fran, I think it is worrying that people choose to live in the immediate city centre especially next door to popular and invaluable music venues and then complain that there is nightlife.
Avatar 5:16am Bill Mac:

@Sem From what I understand he was also working at a record store in Portland Oregon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am Fran:

Apparently that's not the only issue though Kitty - I think you are right if those were the actual full facts and that person was the only problem (that person doesn't now live there I believe?)but I understand its more long running than that and more complicated. Like I say a great venue and want to see it stay - I remember seeing The Black Keys there!
Avatar 5:27am Sem Chumbo:

Lovin' this hurtin' music, Bill. Sure you didn't spin classic country for WWVA at some point in the distant past?
Avatar 5:28am Jay/London:

Thanks Bill but I gota go, see you next week :)
Avatar 5:28am Andy in Berlin:

@ Bill - given the direction of today's selection, one has to ask just how long it's going to take for you to play How Much Is That Doggie In The Window by Patty Paige?
Avatar 5:28am Bill Mac:

@Jay later on bruther!.
Avatar 5:30am Andy in Berlin:

...or for that matter Stranger On The Shore
Avatar 5:30am Bill Mac:

@Sem - Not well versed on the C&W but I picked up a few gems along the way that made me cry a little :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30am Fran:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30am Guido from Cologne:

How Santo & Johnny LPs were packaged in Germany :
Avatar 5:32am Bill Mac:

FYI... PGB will be pinch hitting for me next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33am Fran:

Santo and Johnny Sleepwalk - love it! Bill Nelson has taken to playing this in his rare solo shows - probably on You Tube
Avatar 5:36am BEAVO:

So what was your connection between Bill Nelson and Sleepwalk?
Avatar 5:38am Bill Mac:

@Beavo See Fran's above comment
Avatar 5:38am BEAVO:

Ok got it so did SRV and many others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38am Fran:

Bill Nelson - probably the biggest change from Be Bop to his 80s new wave/Fripp/Eno type stuff and his very prolific self released Frisell Frith and Frippery to date!
Avatar 5:40am BEAVO:

Bill Nelson says he was never paid any royalties from Bee bop Deluxe albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42am Arne:

bill, master of the classy tunes universe, thank you!
Avatar 5:44am BEAVO:

The record co gave them advances to make the albums but always claimed to have not sold enough to recoup their losses. He spent decades in court.
  5:46am P-90:

re: Sleepwalk
"Santo" passed away many years ago, his brother "Johnny" Farina is still giving mesmerizing performances of Sleepwalk.
I was at Les Paul's weekly show at the Iridium Jazz club in midtown (Manhattan) a few years ago, when Johnny came on stage as a guest and played a couple of numbers on the steel guitar. Les had a fascinating chat with him about writing Sleepwalk and his technique on the steel, and then asked him to play the entire song a second time (a VERY unusual request.). He did, and it was magic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48am Fran:

I don't think he got much Beavo - had a big financial crash after they split and is very much a craftsman cottage industry today without a big car or ego! I've met him a few times and he's a really nice chap! Challenge to Bill - get hold of Bill Nelson and Reeves Gabrels' cd from this year called Fantastic Guitars - a gem! There is also a recent solo years retrospective box on Cherry Red/Esoteric which is outstanding as a catch up/overview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48am Guido from Cologne:

Strawberry sound like their early incarnation as Thee Sixpence here.
  5:50am P-90:

@BEAVO: Is Bill Nelson the guy who discovered that guys who had been in the band briefly at the beginning, then left, were getting royalty checks for albums they weren't even on, for years (and said nothing)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50am Fran:

Blues Magoos -did they ever sue Deep Purple for stealing their riff for Black Night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am Fran:

Not sure Beavo? Be Bop Milli Vanilli?
  5:51am marmalade kitty:

Fran, Just read M.E.N article september 26th 2014; It appears the club is safe for the time being.
City council should think twice about granting permission to build housing properties in the immediate next door vicinity of established music venues. The onus is on them to ensure that all parties are kept happy.
Avatar 5:52am Sem Chumbo:

Thanks so much for this morning's show, Bill. Been a time travel extravaganza. See you, and all Zzzzzzzero hours next time. Bye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53am Fran:

Be happy Sem
Avatar 5:53am BEAVO:

Yes or guys who joined later got money for albums they weren't even on.
Avatar 5:54am Bill Mac:

Where's the lineament.... wow thanks all great time as usual and look at all the money you raised.... thanks and we'll see each in a couple weeks.
Avatar 5:55am BEAVO:

Does anybody else use an iPad with this playlist? It keeps refreshing and jumping up and down it's hard to type on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55am Guido from Cologne:

Must it be called "Blues' Theme" with apostrophe since "Heavenly Blues" is one of the characters in the movie (played by Peter Fonda)?
Avatar 5:55am Brian in UK:

Bill, someone played Leapy Lee the other day. Yipeee.

Have a great weekend everyone. Mind the roads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am Fran:

Yay Bill - good choice!
  5:57am P-90:

OK I remember where I saw the whole Bill Nelson story. On Michael Shelley's Playlist page there's always a long list of links at the bottom--it's there, one must hunt, unfortunately he doesn't index those.
Avatar 5:57am Brian in UK:

Sounds like Mrs Mills or Winifred Attwell.
Avatar 5:58am BEAVO:

P-90 that's it. Depressing story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58am Guido from Cologne:

"Crazy Otto" was used as an artist name in Germany for Honky Tonk Piano records.
