Options October 8, 2014: MAYHEM IN THE PM: THE MAYHEMMING! 3 hours of power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk from 1977-1982! (week 2 of WFMU's Silent Fundraiser and Mascot Contest)

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

It's week two of WFMU's Silent Fundraiser and Mascot Contest, and I've put together a special show to remind you of how awesome WFMU is (not to mention my show in particular! right?!), and hopefully to motivate you to pledge.

Tonight it's the eagerly awaited return of Mayhem In The PM! Yes, it's another three hours of nothing but power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk records (yes, RECORDS) from 1977ish through 1982, presented in a Top 40 style just like I used to do on WNYU's New Afternoon Show* a long long time ago. You'll hear some of your old favorites and some others that'll become new faves instantly!

Now, because this is a SILENT fundraiser I won't be talking about it much at all during my show which means I'm depending on the written word to convince you to PLEASE PLEDGE! We're asking for your help so we can outfit our recently opened performance space, Monty Hall, with some key audio gear and an instrument backline so that having a show in Monty Hall doesn't disrupt the station's live recording studio.

If you've already pledged, THANK YOU! Your support is greatly appreciated. If not,
P L E A S E   P L E D G E   N O W !

Stay tuned for more exciting special shows all month, and please take a moment to Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook and follow me on Twitter! Thank you.!

*I really recommend reading this article to get a better understanding of the inspiration for tonight's show.

I've never even hear of Leisure Process. Though it is vaguely familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Stevel:

Perfect season for The Cramps. Hi everyone. I'm pledging tonight, promise.
  9:09pm Ken Temkin:

Nice to listen without worrying about missing class.

the happiest, literally, I ever saw Ken Temkin is when Lux stole his hat at a Cramps show

holy moly, Tim AND Ken on the same playlist! Hi guys, and welcome everyone! Probably not a lot of commenting from me with all these short songs!

Hey Weems-our annual reunion.
  9:13pm JakeGould:

Evan, then maybe you need to get some taller songs.
Avatar 9:14pm Holly in NC:

Ah, the annual playing of the Cyclones. I could switch off now & be a happy woman - but of course I'll stay tuned in & be even happier! :-)

Hi Loretta, Steve1, bobdoesthings, Alex, RRN63 & everyone else, new & old friends...
  9:15pm Timmy Sommer:

oh shoot you mentioned martin rushent. you know i am interviewing Billy Idol LIVE ON STAGE tomorrow as part of his keynote thing at the CBGB's fest and I was going to ask him about Martin Rushent. figured that would throw him for a loop

  9:18pm john:

Oh, lots of great Killing Joke trax. Revelations is still the creepiest album I've ever heard. Came home a little worse for wear one night thirty-plus years ago and turned on the stereo at 3am--that was what was on the turntable. Don't think I slept for a week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm chris:

jeezus h skippy christmas on a cracker, i've stumbled onto an outstanding show here. thanks, efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Stevel:

Was the show five days a week? Read the article. Y'all were influential-like.

We got pieces of this sort of playlist in Madison, but it was inconsistent. I remember listening very HARD when cool stuff was on the radio.
  9:20pm JakeGould:

Killing Joke’s debut album is amazing.
  9:21pm Timmy Sommer:

now THIS is music
i love this song SO MUCH and have TOTALLY FAILED to find it on youtube or any download
Avatar 9:21pm Loretta:

hello Holly ~ enjoying the show tonight for sure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm efd:

Timmy, I think this 4" Be 2" record used to be yours.
  9:22pm Weems:

As a matter of fact, what are your degrees in Ken, Tim, Funk?

I have a BFA in Radio. I tell people it's "communications", but it is in fact, radio.

Avatar 9:30pm daveB from Oakland:

Like that frankies song ... I'm a sucker for angular new wave guitar solos that aren't really solos.
  9:31pm JakeGould:

Evan, not too clear what it is about this mix, but this is really a great set of stuff for my ears.
  9:31pm Timmy Sommer:

KEN AND EVAN if you're there -- here is something that's been REALLY bothering me -- there was an AMAZING single from this era called "Kiss You All Over" or something like that, by a band that i used to MIX UP with the Delmontes -- they had a name like the Espressos or something and it was A GREAT SONG and i can't find it because i can't remember the name of the damn band, woman singer, may have been scottish, single had a black or dark sleeve
Avatar 9:33pm dB from Oakland:

Not getting much info from Google about the Frankies ... anyplace to learn more about them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Alex of Chicago:

Glad I got to hear those last two for the first time. I will be playing those at work.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Mike Sin:

Avatar 9:46pm daveB from Oakland:

Love the music , love the peppy mike breaks ... This is good drive-all-night-long radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm efd:

Folks, just want to quickly mention that we've got our Silent Fundraiser in progress - if you're able to make a pledge via the white box at the top left it'd be much appreciated! We've got new t-shirts and other swag as a reward for your support, plus you can enter your pet in our Mascot Contest!

I see the counter over on the top left has ticked up a bit since the show started which is awesome - thanks to everyone who's pledged! Keep 'em coming!
Avatar 9:50pm Holly in NC:

@db from Oakland - If you want creepy Lords, check "Dreams & Desires" - or not - it hasn't aged particularly well. On the other hand their cover of Live for Today makes me happy :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...interesting period ; inbetween the end of the Pistols & the dominance of MTV, just before CDs (Birth of Alternative - eventually REM makes it big...)
...exciting freedom from 'Old Wave' - but already wondering what will become of Punk's energy ; there's great spirit in these - but knowing now the path lead to MTV kinda puts the damper on for me...& then I ☆ most of them anyway...
- Lords' 'hit' 'Open Your Eyes' I liked...
- Yay - Selecter I don't know...
Avatar 9:55pm Holly in NC:

I was an ant person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I only tuned in at the Lords Of The New Church, but from listening, and reading your playlist, it's obvious this show kicks ass.
  9:56pm Chris:

Hello from northern BC. I've been a long time fan of the show and the show tonight is so good that I had to pledge. Pointed Sticks would fit in nice tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Stevel:

Were these Ants the ones who split off to Bow Wow Wow? I don't remember their lineups.
  9:58pm Ken Temkin:

Always thought The Bodysnatchers were the most underrated Two Tone band.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm efd:

oh come on! I'm sure I played them on NAS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Stevel:

Wow. I just uploaded a related photo, inspired by the show, adn what's been sitting on my dining room table for a month, following a basement flood.

@glenn - omg, when Simon lets himself be dragged right over Wash - that is serious cat obstinance.

Thanks for remembering us Jim Allen!

Every song sounds better with each passing decade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Stevel:

RRN63. Thanks. I'm just glad I rescued them from a box.

In Madison we had our share of cool shows through. I talked the manager of Merlyn's (best club) into letting me in to shoot so I could sell him prints to frame for the walls. I was cheap.
  10:20pm Jim Allen:

Weems, wasn't it you who would throw soul tunes by people like Geno Washington into the NAS?
  10:21pm Thomas Ferraro:

Hey NAS alums, I was faithful listener back in early/mid eighties. Loved EFD and Weems of course, but also Fox on the Run and PABLO!

Hi EFD, love your show, love that article you linked, love the name 'The Brooklyn Bugle',
smiled at that expression: 'the bong-laced indulgent blabbering' (of other college stations),
and since Blag Flag is mentionned, comes back to my memory their many shows at Maxwell's in the mid-eighties.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Stevel:

The top-40 approach of this show was genius. Reminds me of Michael Shelley and his #1 hits.
Avatar 10:49pm Holly in NC:

Another point where Pylon w/b most apropos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm coelacanth:

Holly i just saw your post. So,since i totally love some Clarence Carter songs (esp "road to Love") & am a fan of Tyrone, i have some homework, dont i?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- not being anywhere near TheCity - can't imagine how different life woulda been w/ five days/week of this in 1980...
  10:55pm Jim Allen:

Stevel, the funny thing is, having grown up on the NAS, I just figured that was what college radio was SUPPOSED to sound like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm coelacanth:

i remember this. I called them talking heads wannabes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Stevel:

Jim Allen: Awesome.

I was lucky enough to have an amazing radio experience early on via KFML Denver. Initially as free-form as WFMU, except you'd hear violently different stuff in the same hour (Alice Cooper/London Philharmonic) It spoiled me. Good stations have been few and far between.
  10:58pm Eddy in Australia:

Hi everyone. Tuned in late today (blame daylight savings) but just in time to hear Young EFD. Wow! That first set looks amazing. The rest ain't too shabby, either.
  11:00pm G W:

spandau ballet ? HairCut 100 ? Specials? Undertones? Here comes tim sommer. All the love evan . You are What we need.
  11:01pm EGT:

wouldn't miss a show back then
Won tons of tickets
I still have several cassettes of the new afternoon show
A couple of fave songs from then was Homosapien (long vera) and the Neats singing Six

New Math!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm coelacanth:

This could become the "go-to archive" for a party,or pre-party.
  11:03pm Jim Allen:

EGT, I'm always trying to track down '80s NAS tapes! I have a few digitized if you're up for swapping copies.
  11:03pm Bill W:

I was at NYU at the time, and I did go to class.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Stevel:

coelacanth: Absolutely.
  11:05pm Weems:

Funk. I am the pride of Rochester, NY!
Followed by the Chesterfield Kings, then New Math, Wegmans, Kodak, then Dugan.
  11:05pm Jim Allen:

Who was the NAS DJ who was from Rochester and would always talk up his hometown bands like New Math and Chesterfield Kings?
  11:06pm Jim Allen:

Oh, duh! Sorry Weems, it was you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm efd:

that was classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- from WNYU I get the 'Plastic Tales from the Marshmallow Dimension' podcast now ; 'underground' it may be, New Wave it is not...
  11:09pm G W:

I would like to know how Hugh Fink is doing.
  11:10pm Laura:

How about Heaven 17 or Dislocation Dance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm coelacanth:

  11:24pm Jim Allen:

Hey, this is a different version of It Goes Waap, I have the original 45 and it's definitely a different recording. What gives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm efd:

in the interest of managing expectations: Heaven 17 coming up, maybe the Neats too; I don't have any HSR or Suburban Lawns records though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm efd:

12" version, Jim!
  11:25pm Jim Allen:

Oh, I see, it's the 12" version. I should probably wait a couple of minutes before asking questions! :)

Hey everyone, as I mentioned briefly on the air our October Silent Fundraiser (and Mascot Contest!) is in progress right now! If you're able to make a pledge via the white box at the top left it'd be much appreciated! We've got new t-shirts and other swag as a reward for your support, plus you can enter your pet in the Mascot Contest!

Thanks to everyone who's pledged - please keep 'em coming!
  11:27pm Eddy in Australia:

Modettes? Bodysnatchers/Belle Stars? Altered Images?
  11:28pm Jim Allen:

Peteski, here's a fun fact. I believe that in the Robyn Hitchcock song you referenced, "Listening to the Higsons," the line "gotta let this hen out," which also became the title of a live Robyn album, came from his initial mishearing of the Higsons song "Gotta Let This Heat Out."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm efd:

ooh definitely want to get the mo-dettes in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm efd:

probably a poor decision by me to fish for requests two and a half hours into the show! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm efd:

speaking of Robyn Hitchcock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Stevel:

Avatar 11:32pm Holly in NC:

I'll second or third Human Sexual Response. And THANK YOU for Robyn H !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I do love Robyn H.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm coelacanth:

you'll work those extras into your regular show then....Or write it down & wait another year!
Avatar 11:33pm Please Don't Call Me Reg:

(It's not my name)
  11:37pm Laura:

Thanks, efd! Brings back memories! I was a NAS listener - even answered the request line for bunch of shifts
  11:38pm Thierry:

I saw Robyn Hitchcock at Irving Plaza, does anyone remember this venue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm efd:

Awesome Laura, thanks for tuning in!

Thierry, pretty sure that venue is still going! Saw some shows there a couple of years ago, at least - went there a bunch back in the day.
  11:41pm Eddy in Australia:

  11:43pm Jim Allen:

Now it can be told. I used to call the request line using false voices and phony names to make multiple requests for the same song. Hey, I was 13...
Avatar 11:44pm Peteski:

I thought the machine was playing my library for the last half hour.
  11:44pm Thierry:

Happy to learn not all places disappear in NYC
  11:46pm Laura:

No dB's yet? Saving them for last?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm efd:

hah! I was just trying to figure out which dB's record to play!
Avatar 11:48pm Holly in NC:

Oh yeah, love this Neats song
11:48pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Dynamite segues well here
11:51pm Eric the Half a Bee:

Yo, bro', I've been meaning to start an on-air frequency for years but, typical of me, haven't done it (cash kinda high) using Kelvyn Bell's tune e.g. Refunkanation Station but man, you live it on your show! Jus' caught the end now tonite, but yer killin' as always!
  11:51pm Jim Allen:

I bought this Damned 45 at Metro Records!
  11:52pm Thierry:

dB's, Bongos, Gut Bank, Raunch Hands, etc, How about a Hoboken scene special on this show some time?
  11:52pm rw:

It seems impossible, but the EFD of the '80s seemed to have even more energy than the EFD of today! How can that be?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm joe:

I will be at that Damned, Briefs TSOL show in Asbury on 11/1. What a bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm efd:

rw, that efd was 33 years younger!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm joe:

The Damned still kill it and the Briefs are so much fun.
  11:55pm Eddy in Australia:

Fantastic show, Evan. Only 52 weeks until the next one ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:

and for those of you who thought these songs were too recent, tune in next week for the AM Gold Throwdown with Clay Pigeon!
