I love the random dropping of a Voivod track - never knowing when it's going to happen. It's like a game. We should bet money on when it will drop.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm coe:

Megaforce was huge for us as kids as Anthrax was the Big 4 band I was attached to. They were east coast talked more about comics and horror movies. Knew stuff about NY and NJ. We actually knew people they knew and since we were so into crossover stuff we had that bond too.
  12:47pm George Doom:

Hey Diane, could you please ask MR. Z what his take is on the re-naming of “Kill ‘Em All” from its original title. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Coe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Rich in Washington:

A lot of metal from this era reminds me of the metal show that was on Canadian MTV equivalent Much Music.
I can't remember what the show was called but it played much more extreme metal than MTV would even on Headbanger's Ball. They also played punk and hardcore videos from time to time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Rich, the Pepsi Power Hour, then later the Power 30
Avatar 12:52pm Diane Kamikaze:

George Doom - what is it called??!?!?
Avatar 12:56pm Cecile:

No, it was originally called "Metal up your ass", they renamed it to Kill Em All.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm common:

these are the sounds that were always coming out of my sister's room. ah, memories.
Avatar 12:57pm Diane Kamikaze:

oh oh ok.
Avatar 12:58pm Cecile:

I was thrown for a minute too. I had forgotten all about it not being the original title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Andrew Waterloo:

20 year-old me is upset by this name change. The current me is for it.
Avatar 1:01pm Cecile:

It's already been changed. Changed for 30 years.
Avatar 1:04pm Cheri Pi:

HERE, VOivod! late.
Avatar 1:06pm Cecile:

I don't care, I loved "Shovel-Headed Kill Machine".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coe:

Thank you for playing King's X. i have a feeling that this will be Johnny Z's upset didn't "make" it band.
Avatar 1:14pm MenfussMike:

I had all those early Megaforce records in my early teens. Thank you Jon and Marsha.
Avatar 1:16pm MenfussMike:

Ask him what music he got into pre-record store. Who does he listen to now?
Avatar 1:19pm MenfussMike:

And see if he can comment on signing Ace Frehley.
Avatar 1:20pm Cecile:

People would laugh at me for ordering Metallica records when I was briefly a buyer. They weren't laughing when I kept reordering and reordering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm coe:

Megaforce was a brand. Many times we would buy something just because it was on Megaforce.
Avatar 1:21pm Cecile:

yep! exactly coe

Avatar 1:22pm MenfussMike:

I will be seeing Raven when they Take Control of Memphis oct 5
Avatar 1:22pm Jim Devoid:

Think I saw one of those ANVIL shows that they set up in the mid-80's...Fastlane in Middletown, NY, was amazing!
Avatar 1:22pm Cheri Pi:

I listened to Metallica's first three albums 500,000 times before I graduated from highschool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coe:

@Cecile I had a similar situation when I was working in a chain store and they refused to order the Operation Ivy cd when Rancid's Ruby Soho broke and I was special order like 20 copies a week of the Op Ivy album.
  1:23pm Dean:

I'm curious about JZ's opposition to bootleg LPs. Was he responding to the 1979 suit by CBS on Springsteen's behalf against Vicki Vinyl and Jim Washburn's Beggar's Banquet record store in OC? Loved that store.
Avatar 1:23pm Cheri Pi:

Funnily, enough I didn't know who Led Zeppelin were until my Junior year of Highschool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Coe:

@cheri Pi and why wouldn't you...They were and are great albums.
Avatar 1:24pm Cecile:

I listened to Metallica's first three albums 500,000 times before I graduated from college.
Avatar 1:25pm MenfussMike:

I heard he signed Ace Frehley over a roast beef sandwich
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

In retrospect, Ministry was the better artistic choice.

Avatar 1:31pm dale:

heavy music like this isn't my usual cup of tea (yet i DO like the fun machine), but i love hearing the history behind it from the people who were there.
Avatar 1:32pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile, maybe John can take the "Blues Hospice" fiasco off our hands.
Avatar 1:32pm Cecile:

Yeah, take them off life support, ya know?
Avatar 1:33pm Cecile:

yay! I can stay for the whole time.
Avatar 1:34pm V Priceless:

Avatar 1:35pm Cheri Pi:

LOLsies, hearing John's enthusiasm, I'm getting the itch to take advantage of young bands again.
Avatar 1:36pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:39pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm coe:

Oh that voice that unmistakable voice.
Avatar 1:42pm Cecile:

They are OK. I saw them once, the lead singer was pretty charismatic.
  1:42pm Drew Stone:

Great show Diane!
Avatar 1:44pm Cheri Pi:

If I had a stable of bands (again) I would definitely hoodwink Exodus to be chained therein.
Avatar 1:45pm MenfussMike:

When i was a teen, the only thing that kept me from getting into exodus was dudes voice, but I liked Overkill and Accept. Go figure.
Avatar 1:45pm Cecile:

it's hard to be that screechy and yet be completely understandable. Good singing there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Blacktooth:

Anyone else freaked out by the fact that, living among us, there are young Metallica fans who've probably never heard pre-"Black Album" records? Or (shudder) even pre-"Load"?
  2:33pm Dean:

Shoot, I'm freaked out by the fact that youngsters these days haven't read a lick of John Donne.
  2:33pm Metal Butterfly:

I miss 80's speed metal, before all the compression sucked the life out of the guitars and drums. These records almost sound "live".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Coe:

@Blacktooth My wife is almost a decade younger then me. Me and my friends joke about how we can't stand anything post Justice. Her and her friends got into Metallica with the Black album and joke about how they can't stand anything past Load.
  2:37pm jeremy:

For whom the bell tolls. Tuning in while understanding I may not have a job tomorrow. Great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm common:

sorry jeremy. i'm kinda there.

My introduction to Cliff was the live renditions on Bells on Cliff 'Em All
Avatar 2:39pm Cheri Pi:

DId I miss THE question??!!
Avatar 2:41pm Cheri Pi:

Whenever we hear a bad song on Clear Channel (in the car) Mr. CP always says, is this Metallica's new song? I think it's a defense mechanism. New "metal" now has all the autotuning and vocoder abuse that you're used to hearing from the pop world, BTW.
