Good morning, Joe!
Nice choice. I love the "Switched On Bacharach". I love regular Burt Bacharach, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Dominick:

A total gas, man!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:20am Guido from Cologne:

Just as it is a bunch of 60ies Easy listening it's quite notable how mid-range-heavy those old strereo-mixes were. Should I say mixes? maybe "mastering" would be the right term to put.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:21am Brian in UK:

Talking of mastering, is there a better name than Bob Clearmountain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am common:

@ laura: hee. and, "hey mom, i'm gonna go outside and blow up some stuff with my m-80s." "that's fine, dear. be careful." i miss the 70s.

I understand Keith moonlighted as guest guitarist on this.
  9:22am Wendy del Formaggio:

This song is a very unsettling experience.

@common--me too--though I don't miss the pantsuits we girls were finally permitted to wear at school instead of dresses in 1970. They looked like pajamas!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am northguineahills:

I have that Switched on Bacharach. I suppose Living Guitars is an offshoot of Living Strings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am doctorjazz:

I'm in love...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Webhamster Henry:

This set is reminding me of when I used to tune in and hear Muzakky arrangements like these and think "Oh Irwin is doing something ironic" .. and then discover that I was listening to WPAT.

  9:29am J-Mar:

OMG, I used to have this Nashville Train record. I have no idea why I got rid of it -- sounds awesome. if I recall, the band was actually Swedish too.
  9:29am Wendy del Formaggio:

Hello thedunkel! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am northguineahills:

@common: Me and my friends were still going out in the woods and kablooming things in the late 80s-early 90s. Then HS happened and music and girls took over my attention.
Avatar 9:31am GeesyCreesy:

It ain't easy being cheesy, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Marcel M:

I'd say comparing the music to camembert would be a compliment. Its not SO stinky and is nice and creamy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Dominick:

Welcome cheeses, I want to eat you all!
Avatar 9:33am bobdoesthings:

oh man the stream has been soooo spotty lately, even the slower 128 stream. anyone else?

I thought Donovan was DYLAN for the establishment?
Avatar 9:39am bobdoesthings:

yeah, bummer. It's the worst when my FM signal gets spotty and I switch to the iPhone app and then that shits out.. Then I gotta plug in the laptop and run the slow stream
Avatar 9:40am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Great to see you on Sunday, too! Hope you enjoyed the concert!
  9:42am mike east:

This David kilgour is killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Greg from Bloomfield:

Morning Joe & everybody! I notice the Kilgours are getting a lot of play this week...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Marcel M:

@Joe: I enjoyed it indeed! Was nice to see the new space. I also actually hung out in JC that day because my friend lives there. And what did we do? We went to the Newport Mall because my wife has never been to a mall. We lasted about ten minutes and then fled the scene.
Avatar 9:44am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - hahaha that's funny imaging you and her going to a mall.. haha what was she expecting?! or did she just want to see it?
Avatar 9:45am d¢ pät:

"never been to a mall" wow. I guess I haven't been to one in 15 years, thanks to the internets..
Avatar 9:46am Cecile:

Marcel M. the estabilishment didn't get either of them unless someone was covering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Marcel M:

@BOB: Malls hit Europe in a big(er) way around when she left and most people still don't really go to them. Its part of that American suburban sprawl imagery so she wanted to check it out. She expected it to be bad but we all had this image that it would be kinda fun. It just wasn't the same without the deeper Jersey experience of getting stuck in traffic on Route 4 and then experiencing the wonders of a massive mall parking garage hehe.
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

I go to them for the movies, and also the Women's Talbots - normal looking clothes in insane colors.
Avatar 9:48am Cecile:

Marcel, you maybe need baby steps. A shopping center, perhaps. Or a strip mall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Marcel M:

@Cecile: Just poking a little fun at ol' Donovan Dylan style a la Don't Look Back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Marcel M:

Oh don't get me wrong I'VE had many a mall experience. Its the Spanish wife who had not. Bob and I know a thing or two about Garden State Plaza let me tell you....
Avatar 9:50am bobdoesthings:

ughhh yup
Avatar 9:50am Cecile:

ah, got it.

Also, a mall that is indeed kinda fun is Water Tower Place in Chicgao. everything is transparent - the floors outside of stores, the elevator. I say kinda because while I was admiring the architecture, I also have a ridiculous fear of heights.
Avatar 9:50am Cecile:

I have a question - is it true that most of the best food in Jersey is at strip malls?
  9:50am mike east:

I'm a willowbrook guy myself. I get way too lost at garden state
Avatar 9:51am bobdoesthings:

@cecile - WHAT?! no! it's all chain garbage
  9:51am mike east:

Also I take the bus from there sometimes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Marcel M:

@Mike: It has expanded greatly over the years. The movie theatre is actually pretty nice there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Marcel M:

Well to be fair, in North Jersey, strip malls are so plenteous that there does happen to be good places in them. I mean think about it Bob most all Pizza places are in strip malls.
Avatar 9:52am Cecile:

well, there's prolly some chain garbage, but it looks cool. Like cubic zirconium in a hand carved setting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Marcel M:

Its like that in LA too... with cool clubs and bars. Someone is like, "Lets go to this great place!" and you pull into a strip mall like whaaaat? And yeah, it is actually a cool place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Marcel M:

Inside that is.
Avatar 9:54am Cecile:

yeah, there are some kickass places in strip malls here - two of my favorite Chinese restaurants.
Avatar 9:54am bobdoesthings:

OHHHH "STRIP" malls.. that's just a bunch of stores next to each other.. I read it wrong. I thought you meant Mall food court food.. yuk . Yeah some of the best pizza and bagel places and local spots are wedged inbetween a bunch of stores..
  9:54am mike east:

@cecile: it's true that most pizzerias tend to be in strip malls out here
Avatar 9:54am Cecile:

oh, yeah, bob, you were talking about pizza.
Avatar 9:55am Cecile:

no mall food generally sucks unless you are craving carbs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Marcel M:

Growing up in NJ I also thought that Highways were littered with stores and restaurants everywhere else in the country. I would drive out to 17 from the city with friends from elsewhere and they would always be amazed by the strip mall paradise along the way...
  9:55am mike east:

Also Long Island is one long strip mall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Andrew Waterloo:

Strip malls and plazas are the place to find anything sushi related.
  9:56am KP:

Sky Green Leopards sound impressive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Andrew Waterloo:

The mall food court is the place where you have buy a hot dog to experience flavor.
Avatar 9:57am Cecile:

Yeah. pretty much, Andrew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Marcel M:

Your out in LA Cecile? I visited a few years ago. I don't think I could live there, but I think I could die there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Marcel M:

Avatar 9:59am Cecile:

Oh, no - I live in Minneapolis. We invented the indoor mall here.

now I want a damn hot dog.
  9:59am mike east:

I got food poisoning at a mall food court when I worked at borders.
  10:00am mike east:

It's now a ghost mall
Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

I worked at a mall hot dog stand. I am totally not surprised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Marcel M:

@Cecile: Ah I see. I went to Hawaii once, they have indoor Malls that are also somehow outside.... very interesting indeed.
Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

new Savage Republic?!?!?
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

now I hear all the good plate lunch and casual restaurants are there, if Food Network is to be believed.
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

in the strip malls of Hawaii I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Marcel M:

Yes I believe that is true Cecile. I went to one that was great. For plate lunch that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Marcel M:

But the big "indoor" malls have no ceiling. So they are basically outside, since the weather is so nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Marcel M:

What a nice conversation on malls we are having! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am adrian in mpls:

I do have to say there have been a couple of times folks have visited me and wanted to see the mall of america -- and they seem very disappointed that it's just A REALLY BIG MALL. Not some transcendent commondity experience, or even a Vegas-style refracted spectacular-consumptive wonderland.
Avatar 10:10am KP:

Like every one of these mostly instrumental bands that have been coming our way lately.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

adrian, same here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am common:

i was there once, adrian. it was so cold, but i stood outside and waited for my friends.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

KP - they are the grandaddies. Practically invented the sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Marcel M:

Yes although on a smaller scale, that was definitely the experience this past weekend.
Avatar 10:11am Cecile:

Savage Republic, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Andrew Waterloo:

Are you saying the Mall of America doesn't have any submarines?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Michele:

HI Joe! Love the last couple songs in this set!
Avatar 10:11am KP:

Really? Cool. it's driving music.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:11am HarktheUmpire:

Did someone find some lost Sonic Youth tapes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Marcel M:

Hi Michele!
Avatar 10:12am Cecile:

NO SUBMARINES. NO GIANT ICE RINK. It is disappointing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Michele:

Hi Marcel! Great show on Sunday right?!
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

Hey, Michele! Great to see you at the concert the other night!
Avatar 10:13am d¢ pät:

too bad that whenever some one detunes there guit, it sounds like SY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Marcel M:

Yep I really enjoyed it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am adrian in mpls:

Michele - just have to say, the Shut Up Weirdo archives have been keeping me from losing my mind lately - so thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Andrew Waterloo:

There is a classic Rick Mercer joke about the West Edmonton Mall having more submarines than the Canadian Navy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am northguineahills:

@dc pat: 9 times out of ten, it does.
Avatar 10:16am Cecile:

Before i got to know them, I always thought SY sounded like gamelan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Marcel M:

My friends and I were actually just last night complaining about how Sonic Youth has usurped so many things. Not their fault or a legit complaint against them, but since they are pretty mainstream, a lot of their sounds are attributed to being quite unique to them, when in face, wise WFMU listeners like us, know they are not.
Avatar 10:17am Claw!:

Hello, Joe! Good morning everyone!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:17am Ken From Hyde Park:

Come to www.deadmalls.com and shop around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Michele:

@ adrian in mpls WOW! Thank you, so nice to hear that!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Marcel M:

Woah... the dead malls remembers the world trade center thing right at the top of the site is pretty off putting..
Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

SY were just a bit past early adopters. They seemed to be good popularizers. If you look at Thurston interviews (as he was the trendiest of them), they broke Phillip K Dick to a lot hipsters in '87, free jazz in the early 90s, etc.
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

this was an excellent record that should have gotten more attention, and not just because Katie was in the band. :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am adrian in mpls:

always really liked this version of this song
Avatar 10:25am d¢ pät:

You said it Cecile--seems like everybody was reading Phillip K Dick back then (except me). But there was no one else like them then.
  10:26am Yvonne Szymczak:

I like the Les Baxter/Will Holt version, didn't know this one existed! Thank you for the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Marcel M:

The way they fused their noisy and experimental sound with pop surely was unique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Michele:

I love this song
Avatar 10:27am Joe McG:

@Yvonne: That is the first famous one, I think, although Nina Simone is THE most famous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am DCE:

only the crunchiest of guitars will do
Avatar 10:28am KP:

Is this a bonus track on Super Hits? How did i miss it?
Avatar 10:29am Joe McG:

@KP: No, it's on the new Vol. 2! Shelley outdoes himself on this one.
  👻 Swag For Life Member 10:30am 12539:

For a moment I was scared you were going to talk over this.
Avatar 10:30am Dr. Goot:

Sweet Harrison cover!
Avatar 10:30am bobdoesthings:

I've been sharing this with everyone.. I just can't help it - Billy Corgan with kitties -- 33.media.tumblr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am DCE:

I was just reading yesterday about how Harrison had to pay $646k (back in the early 70s) because "My Sweet Lord" was a blatant (subconscious) rip of "He's So Fine"
Avatar 10:31am Cecile:

Marvel, being a fan of them was fun in that you could track and follow their interests and obsesssions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Marcel M:

@Cecile: True. I'm not trying to diss them. I have all their albums for gods sake...
Avatar 10:32am KP:

a collection from a certain someone else was a hit at recent gathering of which i had some interest.
Avatar 10:32am d¢ pät:

wow, never knew how much dough he had to cough up for that.
Avatar 10:33am Cecile:

DCE, yup!

I learned about the band Crime through them.
Me either, Marcel. I have nearly all their records as well.
Avatar 10:34am probablyjohn:

it is like "KILG-hour", but it's hard to make that sound more correct than "kill-gore" unless you feign an accent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Greg from Bloomfield:

I always said "Kil-gore", but Sir Richard said "Kil-gower" when he introduced Hamish, so I'm switching.
Avatar 10:37am Joe McG:

Thanks for the pronunciation help, fellas! I should have tried it with a kiwi accent.
Avatar 10:37am Cecile:

Just say it with your teeth clenched. Or clinched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Lewis:

Avatar 10:38am KP:

in other words, It's a Sunshine Day was well received.
  10:38am Robert:

Lewis, I don't know whether Mr. McGasko is intentionally doing a mix, or that's "trouble with the stream".
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

Lewis, I am.

@KP: Good to hear! @Robert: Nope, no mixing going on here!
Avatar 10:39am d¢ pät:

I thought I heard a couple of skips but thought those were the 45s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Lewis:

Cecile - maybe it is a twin cities thing?...
  10:40am Robert:

Oh, then it's trouble with the stream. But I like the effect!
Avatar 10:40am Cecile:

Could be Lewis!
Avatar 10:40am probablyjohn:

stream 0 and 3 are both fine in these twin cities
Avatar 10:41am DJ MoneyBag$:

Mix Master McG is within the house
  10:41am Robert:

In the reminiscence by Steve Post (scan missing a few pp. linked from Blast of Hot Air), he writes of being pleased at the mix he was hearing from a certain station as he was driving, only to realize it'd been 2 stations alternating.
Avatar 10:41am DJ Stashu:

I am also having trouble with the stream :(
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

@Moneybags: Ha ha!
Avatar 10:42am Dr. Goot:

What's on the flip of "I've Returned"?
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

Hey, Jeff, if you're out there this mornin', can you have a look? Thanks!
Avatar 10:43am DJ Stashu:

The stream seems to be OK now :)
Avatar 10:43am Joe McG:

@Goot: "When the Hangover Strikes," which I also like!
Avatar 10:43am d¢ pät:

I also noticed a couple hiccups on the 128 stream a few minutes ago, but it's straightened up again now.
Avatar 10:44am bobdoesthings:

@joe: Thanks, joe! I like hitting sweet spots. This current song is the craziest rock/soul/prog hybrid I've heard in some time!
Avatar 10:57am Cecile:

you should listen to the second side of the first Zapp album - they try everything, even country
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am adrian in mpls:

@common - hahaha - there's also a simpson's joke involving das butt in an early episode
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

@Cecile: I have that one, must relisten!
Avatar 10:59am Cecile:

it's not as successful as side 1, but there's interesting things on there.

Kasey Kasem's fun facts

'Das Boot' was the German version of the French masterpiece, 'Le Shoe'

Squeezes single 'I've Returned' was the follow up to the seminal work, 'I'll Be Back'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Greg from Bloomfield:

I always loved Easter, but that's cuz my Ukranian grandmother would make a giant breakfast of babka, kielbasa, ham, handmade pierogi, kapusta and cucumber salad. Not even Thanksgiving can mess with that spread.
  11:15am Brendan:

Hi Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Marcel M:

This is good music to brood , scheme or otherwise formulate a plan to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm sure that music could prevent your bread from rising too much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am joe:

Right now this fighting with the soothing sounds of The Boys of Summer leaking over wall from my neighbors cube
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Andrew Waterloo:

The guy next to me has those Bose noise cancelling headphones on. I could probably play gong with a jackhammer and get away with it.
Avatar 11:28am DeemerDave:

Isn't that Neil Young's Ohio in "Meat"
  11:28am Brendan:

Yeah that or salt. I forgot to use salt in making a bread recipe recently. It rose and rose. Think viagra commercial. If after 4 hrs ...
Avatar 11:28am d¢ pät:
