Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm SeanG:

Always liked The Piano and Jane Campion
Avatar 5:04pm Snortley:

Funny how Nyman's concert works too often have a soundtrack feel, while this actual soundtrack piece doesn't seem to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm with you, SeanG, hence my beginning with something from that lovely film's lovely soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Gaylord Fields:

@Snortley: Astute observation, which just adds to my fascination with Nyman.
Avatar 5:10pm glenn:

hey dudes, it seems they have figured out who jack the ripper was.
125 years later.
Avatar 5:11pm Snortley:

Balanescu's soundtrack for "Angels and Insects" is well worth checking out. Really good.
Avatar 5:13pm glenn:

and no, it's not rob ford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm pacific standard simon:

Checking in -- Hi, Gaylord!

@glenn - I kinda liked that painter dude as The Ripper, even though he was probably just a Victorian troll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: My guess was Queen Victoria. Close?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, pacific standard simon! Thanks for checking in!
Avatar 5:14pm glenn:

nope. a polish barber.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm pacific standard simon:

Walter Sickert, that was the painter's name.
Avatar 5:15pm glenn:

  5:16pm sugarwolf:

I am sort of disappointed that it was one of the original suspects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: I'll have to look into this revelation at a time when I'm not alienating the radio masses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: You mean instead of, say, Mark Twain or Joseph Lister or someone else famous and unsuspected?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Gaylord Fields:

There goes my screenplay for Samuel Clemens, Prostitute Hunter!
Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

well, jeez. we're not alienated in the least.
  5:19pm sugarwolf:

Or some random guy no one has ever heard of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm pacific standard simon:

Ah, the sound of percolating alienation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: I know, but wait till I get all poppy in your grill!
  5:20pm sugarwolf:

Well this means Patricia Cornwell was wrong, so that's a plus.
Avatar 5:20pm glenn:

whew. i thought that said poopy for a second.
Avatar 5:21pm glenn:

will it make her any less insufferable? i think not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: So much for the "it takes a sociopath to know a sociopath" theory, then.
Avatar 5:22pm kat330:

Hi, Gaylord and folks on board! All I could ever wish for anyone weather-wise is what we've enjoyed here in SO IN the past 18 hours. In a word, glorious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: You'll have to buy me a drink first for that.
Avatar 5:24pm glenn:

the next time i'm in jersey city, your first bloody caesar is on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Have you ever been to Columbus (your Columbus, not Ohio's)? I've been meaning to road-trip there for the mid-century architectural marvels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: I set myself up.
Avatar 5:25pm kat330:

@Gaylord: A few times, yes. It was especially nice touring it with Philo the Finn seeing all of Eero's handiwork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Gaylord Fields:

Okay, I'm there, perhaps as soon as next year! I'm a huge Eero fan, natch!
Avatar 5:27pm kat330:

Natch? As in ....?
Avatar 5:27pm glenn:

or would you prefer a martinus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Gaylord Fields:

It's 1940s movie talk for "naturally."
Avatar 5:29pm kat330:

Of course, we are earnestly hoping to move from the area, but if still stuck here, you *will* meet up with us for a beer or whatever poison's your pleasure. Martini included.

Ha! Yes, I know what "natch" means -- I was asking *why* is it natural you'd like Eero??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm pacific standard simon:

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: Who?

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: Naturally?

Abbott: Naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Gaylord Fields:

Duh, kat330, on the slang! And I like him 'cause he's ginchy!
Avatar 5:31pm glenn:

hydroponic weed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Gaylord Fields:

I mean, he's the sine qua non of MCM. It's like saying you like surf harmony groups of the 1960s and citing the Beach Boys as your fave.
Avatar 5:33pm kat330:

Thought perhaps it was some weird dingus, yeah ya see, like because he's so often the answer to a crossword clue, yeah, that's the ticket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Keen lingo slinging, toots!
  5:35pm Moe:

Good one from Lana... Hydroponic weed, funny stuff...
Avatar 5:36pm kat330:

Who ya callin' toots?! I ain't no dame. I'm a real lady, I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Gaylord Fields:

@Moe: Lana is secretly funny for such a sad gal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Begging pardon, your ladyship.
Avatar 5:39pm kat330:

Da Vinci's very ginchy and Eero has no peer-o.

Can't get on board the Lana train myself.
  5:41pm sugarwolf:

Time to go back to work. See you next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: It's hard to get past all the drama sometimes, but she's worth it for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Let's Go Mets!
Avatar 5:42pm kat330:

@glenn: How's it in Canada today?
Avatar 5:44pm glenn:

it's pretty nice here in trawna. i can't say for the rest of soviet canuckistan.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: But then Sutch got deducted one kill by committing suicide.
Avatar 5:47pm kat330:

I was thinking this was just for you, glenn. Too left for you, eh? Maybe we should exchange places, because Indiana is as right-red as you can get -- well, not exactly, but close enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: By the way, nice Lone Twister quote from last week's comments. Just wanted to acknowledge that I picked up what you were putting down.
Avatar 5:50pm kat330:

Appears Serena is quickly dispatching Caroline with ease.

"Lone Twister"? I am confused, natch.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...was always partial to 'Powderfinger' - but good choice !
...Neil, LordSutch, myself - nuthin' but a bunch of ♏Scorpio weirdos...
Avatar 5:51pm glenn:

*shudders* i would rather drink my own blood than have to fraternize with right wing nutbars.
Avatar 5:52pm kat330:

@glenn: Color me confused then again. You guys make me feel I've entered a parallel universe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: I almost played "Powderfinger" but suddenly saw that "Pocahontas" would fit well after that Chinese ballad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm pacific standard simon:

Lana tour of June-acy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm dale:

i love the wheezy pump organ sound on this nico song.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

GF: - that it did !
Avatar 5:53pm glenn:

i've never made any secret of my left leaning tendencies.
Avatar 5:54pm glenn:

there's no rule that says you can't also play powderfinger, is there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm pacific standard simon:

Only your tailor knows for sure, glenn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: I hadn't ruled it out for this show, actually.
Avatar 5:55pm kat330:

@glenn: Well, I *thought* as much, but "rest of soviet canuckistan" sounded a bit like a pejorative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@pacific standard simon: I'm glad you went there and not me. Dress left, indeed!
Avatar 5:58pm glenn:

oh boy. that's..... just wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm pacific standard simon:

A fella could get kilt!
Avatar 5:59pm glenn:

i forget who called us that. was it rush limbaugh, or that cranky old republican senator? anyway, i wear it with pride.
Avatar 5:59pm kat330:

XTC's "Senses Working OVertime" next? [I always shout out "six!" in the pause after "five."]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Ha! That's your ESP in action!
Avatar 6:00pm kat330:

Guess there's no leaning in a kilt.
Avatar 6:01pm kat330:

@Gaylord: Well, I do like to shine. ☼
  6:02pm Moe:

Is it me or did we loose radio broadcast?
Avatar 6:02pm glenn:

i notice that the comments are fewer. surely that can't have anything to do with the n.f.l., can it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm pacific standard simon:

I lean on me caber.
Avatar 6:03pm kat330:

@Moe: It's been fine on the Squeezebox signal.
Avatar 6:03pm kat330:

@pss: That much support required? Hm.
  6:04pm JakeGould:

Hi all! About to take a nap, but wanted to remind people—like On Kawara—that I am alive & enjoying this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm pacific standard simon:

Aye, when there's that much whisky involved.
Avatar 6:05pm kat330:

Kauniita unia, Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: My New York Football Giants play tomorrow night. Unlike last year, there are only two games on the teams schedule that coincide with my show.
  6:06pm JakeGould:

Hakuna Matata, Kat.
Avatar 6:07pm kat330:

Ha! :)
  🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm 12539:

Was that Matthew Shipp piece new?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Gaylord Fields:

@12539: Yes, it was. It's off his new album, which is called I've Been to Many Places.
Avatar 6:10pm TDK60:

Robert Wyatt does it again.
Avatar 6:10pm kat330:

@glenn: Our little exchange reminds me I got a polling call yesterday. She started by saying "would you answer a few questions about quality of life in Indiana?" I replied: You can write down that given our current governor and attorney general, quality of life in Indiana sucks, and thank you for calling at dinnertime. [click]
  6:10pm Moe:

My daughter...
  🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm 12539:

Thanks Gaylord. That was unusually accessible for him (but typically engrossing).
  6:11pm scojo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Whosondephone:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Gaylord Fields:

@12539: Every now and then, Shipp will throw, well, not a curveball in his case, but one right down the plate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Gaylord Fields:

@Whosondephone: [bows graciously]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm pacific standard simon:

Going all poppy now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@pacific standard simon: Maybe, and then, maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm pacific standard simon:

The suspense!
  6:24pm P-90:

Fluid, imaginative, and engaging playlist, as ever.
Thanks @DJ Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: Aw, geez! Thanks!
Avatar 6:25pm kat330:

Enjoying the dinner sounds, Gaylord! [Typing's been halted while digits occupied with knife and fork for a bit.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Eating to the beating, to paraphrase Blondie?
Avatar 6:27pm TDK60:

Just the right soul jazz for this evenin'.
Avatar 6:27pm steve:

so good! i love this flute
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Gaylord Fields:

@steve: That's Ms. Humphrey and her soulful flautism for ya!
  6:30pm P-90:

@ Gaylord: And your Jedi apprentice Ms. Samantha hit another home run this morning. There are now more really good WFMU DJ's than there are slots to fill, to a greater degree than I can ever remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm pacific standard simon:

I'd like to see the alternate webstreams fill out a bit more, what with all this talent available.
  6:32pm P-90:

pss: Yeah, what about that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: I read Samantha's playlist, and I was gobsmacked! I can't wait to give it a proper listen! And when she becomes approved for daytime fill-ins, you better believe you'll find her here when I'm away!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

P-90/pss: long seemed inevitable to me ! ; on other hand, just choosing between BodegaPop & main stream on Wed.P.M. already hard...I certainly haven't timeslots open for Archives or anything !!...
  🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm 12539:

Reading playlists is like reading sheet music, some people can just imagine the whole thing in their head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Gaylord Fields:

There really is an embarrassment of riches on WFMU's various and varying channels these days! Good problem to have, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm dale:

is this boy child?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm pacific standard simon:

Sometimes I'd rather watch triple-A ball than the bigs -- just sayin'. NOT right now, of course.
  6:37pm Moe:

the Byrds "Going Back" would be a good choice for the next tune....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Gaylord Fields:

@12539: Absolutely! That's why I can't wait to hear Samantha's show, if it sounds even half as good as it reads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Rob W:

I loved the track from "Modern Chinese Folk Songs" earlier. The singer's name is actually Yang Hsien (楊弦). More info on this mid-70s LP is here: tiny.cc... .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm dale:

me thinks it tweren't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Rob W:

Correction, that LP title is "Modern Chinese Ballads."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I know JulianCope later sorta denounced ScottWalker - but I always associate when heard...which for me is pleasant...
  6:39pm P-90:

@ RevRab:There's a point, you're right, multiple streams with competing live shows is an issue for listeners. The "embarrassment of riches" effect...
I'ts also already an issue with Shulkind, Uncle M., and Amanda. the archive is a digital-age godsend, but sometimes you kinda wanna listen live, it's part of the traditional radio "experience."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@Rob W: Thanks! I'll update the playlist to reflect that, and I'll make notes on my copy as to the various performers. (By the way, I enjoyed the group you had on yesterday, Bombay Rickey; the singer was appropriately operatic.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm pacific standard simon:

I've been smacked around before -- by Uncle Michael -- for dissing Scott Walker.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the Bombay Rickey singer left my jaw on the floor as soon as they hit their Swingin' Mozart thang !
...someone 'famously' quoted efd as saying Archives are like mixtapes w/ people talking
- but MaryWing made the point last night that you can FastForward & Skip & stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Gaylord Fields:

I like ALL phases of Noel Scott Engel (except for his early rockabilly-lite teen idol sides from the late Fifties).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm pacific standard simon:

So far, the only serious listening conflict I've experienced has been between Joe Belock and Tony Coulter.
  6:44pm sugarwolf:

I just got asked what country Washington DC is in.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm pacific standard simon:

Unless you count the conflict between listening and my need for sleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: You need smarter friends/co-workers/customers!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm pacific standard simon:

The nation of Da Capo, natch!
Avatar 6:48pm glenn:

welcome to my world, sugarwolf.
Avatar 6:50pm kat330:

@pss: I was smacked around when I was a brand newbie on the comments for dissing Rod Stewart. I was rather stunned a DJ would do that in a FREEFORMat. But OTOH, you can get "smacked around" for liking something -- like the flute -- on certain boards. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: At least in your world, people have the excuse of not being Americans.
  6:50pm P-90:

I caught Bombay Rickey too, lot's of fun, very impressive.

Does anyone else find that some shows "work" well on archive, like podcasts or "mixtapes with patter"?
For example, Rex's show works great for me as a pre-recorded package of bon-bons, while Dave the Spazz does something very similar, but it's got more of a Murray the K/Wolfman Jack vibe, something you want to share live, as it's happening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: I don't dismiss any music or artist for being "uncool"! I check the word "cool" at the door when I enter this studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm pacific standard simon:

@kat330 - I wasn't really "smacked around" by UM -- he's a friend -- although I did cause some trouble on another show that clearly wasn't meant for me by ranting about Katy Perry.
Avatar 6:55pm kat330:

Cool or uncool isn't quite what the issue is with Stewart, but I certainly figured *every*one is entitled to have an opinion without being piled on. Seems to run against the Freeform model. Now, being needlessly rude about anything goes beyond, but just saying "don't care for," it certainly should not be discouraged (which I think it is in general).
Avatar 6:56pm TDK60:

Rod Stewart was on some great albums: Beckola, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm pacific standard simon:

@P-90 - The shows that work best for me in the archives are the ones that play the most 7" singles.
Avatar 6:57pm kat330:

@pss: Yeah, I know you didn't mean in any serious way. But since that early experience of mine, I've felt a constraint that I don't think a listener -- a donator esp. -- should have to worry about.

And again the Stewart love comes out. I get it -- most of you love him! I just happen not to. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Gaylord Fields:

I do think there's a difference is saying one doesn't care for Rod Stewart and one doesn't care for Scott Walker -- in the WFMU universe. Whether that difference is bad is immaterial to me right now, but there is a difference.
Avatar 6:58pm kat330:

BUT, I do quite love my last two weeks here with you, Gaylord and friends. Thanks, and have a great night all!
  🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm 12539:

Thanks, Gaylord!
  6:59pm P-90:

Rod Stewart? Of Faces, etc.? Understood to be one of the great, classic all-time R&R singers, no?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Rod is a fantastic singer who - @ various times - has had Tastes I relate to more or less
...which brings us to the question of Mainstream Pop / 'The Hits' (taped a Hollies CD called 'Not the Hits Again!' - & that title stays w/ me...) & how that relates to FreeForm Culture - & Community as it is right here...
Avatar 7:00pm glenn:

give me rod over scott any day.
  7:00pm P-90:
