Good morning Bill and all the Buttless Chaps
Avatar 3:08am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Bill and good morning. Hey, P-90: these fellows sound quasi-buttless.
Avatar 3:09am Andy in Berlin:

Good morning everyone!! A cool end of summer day over here. The menu for today is a nice big piece of Turkish honeydew melon. And a croissant. Yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10am Fran:

Mornin' folks from Rochdale where the weather is more grey and miserable than the Peter Hammill Holiday Camp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11am mauri:

hello morning. this song is strange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14am Fran:

Sounds like a good mix of healthy and not there Andy. It will be some form of granola here shortly which is much less exotic but as the weather is the equivalent of burnt toast its a step up....
Avatar 3:16am Sem Chumbo:

Local blueberries, honey and whipped cream, and strong black French Roast here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18am Fran:

I thought Sheryl Crow was going to start bleating at some point with this one?
Avatar 3:18am Bill Mac:

Hey all.... @P-90 - A guy can take that comment two ways... it applies to me on both counts - Happy Holiday weekend to all!
You're killing me Sem!
  3:20am P-90:

Sem is, slowly but surely, talking me into moving to Nova scotia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21am Fran:

Good one Sem. Clearly the WFMU midnight snack cafe isn't quite so well stocked.......I think you need to chew an old Styx album if you get hungry......
Avatar 3:21am Sem Chumbo:

Better get used to a lot of music like this...everywhere. And, how do you look in a kilt? Mandatory, you know.
Avatar 3:23am Sem Chumbo:

@Fran: surely there is a crust of an old Bread album lying around?
Avatar 3:23am Jay/London:

good morning all and happy holiday to all of you on the other side of the pond

Avatar 3:35am Sem Chumbo:

Scurvy and ricketts: is that like bangers and mash?
Avatar 3:36am Bill Mac:

mmmmmm.... scurvy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38am Fran:

Scurvy and ricketts also sound like bad TV detectives (Crockett and Tubbs with issues), a law firm you wouldn't use or an awful folk duo that make you itch at the very mention of their name...
Avatar 3:39am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03am Fran:

Superman with a beard - could be funny in a Brian Blessed sort of way!. I think the ad for 'wanted, tall man with a cape' needed a bit more explanation to ensure no Wakeman applications!
Avatar 4:03am Sem Chumbo:

In Canada it is spelled "grackles."
  4:03am KP:

So the needle fell or broke off the expensive turntable I never use

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Fran:

KP - possibly a good thing you aren't doing a vinyl DJ set for them. Cocktail sticks are no good as an emergency replacement stylus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Guido from Cologne:

I will see Swans in Cologne ... along with Pharmacon (often featured on Kaeili's show)
  4:12am P-90:

Oh, one of those "work people only" deals...

A few years since I was there Jay but have been quite a few times. I even managed the WFMU record fair one year! Aiming to go back next year too but its way off being confirmed as it depends on final agreement with my beloved!
Avatar 4:27am Jay/London:

@ sem Chumbo 23 Skidoo are a British band playing a fusion of industrial, post-punk, alternative dance, rock, and world music. The group was named after an early 20th-century American slang phrase that later made appearances in the works of Aleister Crowley, William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, and filmmaker Julian Bigg

Avatar 4:40am Bill Mac:

No kidding Brian - I wasn't sure what to make of him, but this is cool and will definitely compliment the next tune on the docket
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am Fran:

Ackles is great indeed - I remember Elton John enthusing over him on one of those Elvis Costello Spectacle interviews - which renewed some respect for Elton in me after his years of Tiara's and Tantrums!
Avatar 4:41am Brian in UK:

I proposed to my wife to his song, House Above the Strand on his fourth album.
Enough information.
Avatar 4:42am Bill Mac:

Fran Elton doesn't bother me much anymore, but remember when he was kinda cool, for like a minute back in the beginning?
Avatar 4:43am Brian in UK:

Fran never cared for Elton's music, always loved the fact thet he was a music FAN.
Avatar 4:45am Bill Mac:

Lovely story Brian - glad I hit the nail on the head
  4:45am P-90:

Elton was cool for a couple of years in the early 70s
  4:46am marmalade kitty:

Any Roy Harper, Bill?
Avatar 4:47am Bill Mac:

@Kitty - for you kitty I'll see what I can do. I got another request that might lean up against that rather nicely.
Avatar 4:47am Bill Mac:

@P-90 Honky Chateau methinks
Avatar 4:48am Jay/London:

@ P-90 when he played with John Lennon and when he was in the film Tommy he was coolish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am Fran:

Same with me Bill - he had some excellent material early on - turned into a ridiculous circus act and then has redeemed his credibility although I'm passive about his material. But as Brian says he is a real fan and that commands respect. Its odd but there is a clutch of 70s singer songwriters who are dismissed as cheese but if you delve into their (usually earlier) catalogues there is often more than the odd flash of genius which has been overlooked unfairly due to cheese or pop hit moments - classic case is Gilbert O'Sullivan
Avatar 4:50am KP:

Ok, Esquivel Infinity in Sound Vols 1-2 have been added to party list. Any other random suggestions for this swanky soiree?
  4:50am marmalade kitty:

I draw a line at gilbert o'sullivan.. LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am Stanley:

Elton Bog cool?
Yeah, like 'for a minute' - nice one Bill.
For me, he sorted the sheep from the goats back in the day
(Ps proud to be a goat!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am Fran:

KP - Astrud Gilberto, Jobim - brazilian end of light?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am Guido from Cologne:

This is cool!
What does entry **** (new/special9 mean?
Avatar 4:51am KP:

Elton john's early stuff can get epic. Some song about NY?
  4:52am P-90:

Those of us old enough to remember those ancient days when Elton was cool also remember that that it was really the duo of Elton and Bernie Taupin that was cool...
Avatar 4:52am Brian in UK:

The song Talking Old Soldiers on Tumbleweed Connection is dedicated to David (Ackles)
Avatar 4:52am Bill Mac:

@Guido - must be an extry special recording - wonder how that happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am Fran:

Marmalade Kitty - you do need to look beyond the cheese with GO'S - you'll find reissues of his older albums reviewed more fairly based on their merits i.e. if no one told you it was him you would never guess
Avatar 4:53am Brian in UK:

@P-90 Is there a better song than Lady Samantha?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am Stanley:

@MK - try listening to Uncle Michael's show, where there are no guilty secrets.
Makes me face up to my inner Sullivans
Avatar 4:54am Brian in UK:

Gilbert's last drummer before he sadly died Roly Kerridge also drummed on More Kante's Yeke Yeke.
Avatar 4:55am KP:

Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters is the one i was thinking of, i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am Fran:

There should be no guilty secrets around music - remembering that Esquivel was your parents muzak and at 18 you would never admit to liking that but in this revisionist world it is all now super cool and visionary!
  4:56am P-90:

"Lady Samantha"1 That's going WAY back. Cool early single, I don't think anyone in America heard it until Elton became well known a few years later.
Avatar 4:57am Brian in UK:

Still find James Last & Bert Kamfart hard to listen to.
Avatar 4:57am KP:

Sad thing is Fran, i have some of this stuff but since we moved to apartment and it's all buried, not that wasnt buried when we lived in suburbs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59am Stanley:

@ Brian - Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass?
Avatar 4:59am Brian in UK:

Stanley, at least Herb co-founded A&M with Jerry Moss.
Avatar 5:00am KP:

Fran im so revisionist i have Space Age Bachelor Music somewhere. i hated it when i bought it but now that im old it seems like good choice for party. But i cant find it in this mess. Also when you have a party you (I) hide everything.
  5:00am P-90:

And of course WFMU stalwart Irwin Chusid was instrumental in sparking the Esquivel revival in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am Fran:

Avatar 5:02am KP:

Was he P-90? One of the guests got to know Irwin through Irwin's most recent project.

A&M signed the Flying Burrito Brothers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am Guido from Cologne:

I loved "manuel and his music from the mauntains", UK-Exotica. I was so proud to own "real adult" LPs !
Avatar 5:04am Brian in UK:

Spanish Fly was a favourite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05am Fran:

A&M also signed Styx!
  5:05am marmalade kitty:

Avatar 5:05am KP:

it's come lately that woman on cover of Whipped Cream was pregnant, naturally enhanced.
Avatar 5:06am Brian in UK:

@KP I have NEVER liked the mix on the first Burritos. Could have been so much better. Any thoughts?
Avatar 5:07am Bill Mac:

@Brian Spanish Flea....
@Fran Styx - auuuugh - uhLaaaadehhh! (that's 'Lady' - pardon my phonetics)
Avatar 5:07am KP:

Ok fran now checking into Asrtrud. Any recommends? Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am Fran:

Babe by Styx is possibly the worst Hair Rock Ballad ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am Guido from Cologne:

I have a cool version of spanish fly
  5:10am P-90:

KP: If you're playing all that stuff you could throw in some Dave Brubeck too
Avatar 5:10am Brian in UK:

Overtaken by viagra these days.
Avatar 5:10am Bill Mac:

Should at least keep you from tipping over
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11am Fran:

The compilation album, This Is Astrud Gilberto is a collection of lovely stuff?
Avatar 5:11am Brian in UK:

What's happened to Spizz Energi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11am Fran:

Or Athletico Spizz 80 or Spizz Oil??
Avatar 5:12am Brian in UK:

Was there an Olympic Spizz?
Avatar 5:13am Brian in UK:

Stanley, have you been eating your greens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14am Guido from Cologne:

Spizz re-emerged in the late 90ies or early 00s.
Playing shows as well.
Avatar 5:14am KP:

Dave Brubeck is a little played out in NY. Also staying away from straight jazz just to infuriate a jazz guy who will be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am Stanley:

Eating my greens? I've started to wearing them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16am Stanley:

This show lacks a bit a bit of reggae in my opinion. Bill man - where you gonna run to?
Avatar 5:16am Brian in UK:

Will you be voting next month?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am Fran:

I'm all out of Spizz with those...
Avatar 5:17am Brian in UK:

Keith Hudson DUB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am Stanley:

Of course, man! Where on this planet do people get a chance like this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18am Guido from Cologne:

It took me years to understand that thing about the Spizz-names .
Have the Atletico (0 LP but needed the singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19am Fran:

Some reggae - Prince Gilbert and The Do Wakka Doo Wakka Day Sound System?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am Fran:

Spizz's Where's Captain Kirk was one of my schoolboy classics!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21am Stanley:

Prince Gilbert and O-Sullivaaaans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21am Fran:

Gilbert - Riddim Go Farward!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am Guido from Cologne:

"Captain kirk" is a killer!

I once recorded "Soldier" from the radio and loved it so much but never could find it. Nver got the things together. Not before the retrospective comp came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am Fran:

Spizz does the occasional tour still I think - pretty certain I saw him listed a while back?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24am Guido from Cologne:

Put some Tito Puente.
Allways works and is very NY.
Avatar 5:24am Brian in UK:

Jenny Lewis is doing a second show. Yipeee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25am Fran:

Your luck is in Brian!
Avatar 5:25am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28am Fran:

Thank you Bill for playing one of my all time heroes the much missed Mr Kevin Coyne
Avatar 5:29am Brian in UK:

Avatar 5:29am KP:

Ok FRan. Astrud and Jobim on board. Have a LOT of french stuff on list so this balances out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am Fran:

I think the Tygers of Pan Tang might pose as their own tribute band in the hope they would get a bigger crowd!
Avatar 5:29am Bill Mac:

Later Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30am Fran:

Excellent KP - cocktail sticks and groovy tracks all ready then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31am Stanley:

Avatar 5:35am Brian in UK:

Bill, I was humming the Last Day of June from this album last week. The day that Ernst Roehm died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36am Fran:

Only seen Harper in the 90's onwards - last years show with strings was sublime stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37am Stanley:

Brian - is Watford Gap still there?
Avatar 5:37am Brian in UK:

A song for each decade of the last century.
Surpassing yourself today.
Avatar 5:38am Brian in UK:

Yes Stanley but it is in Northamptonshire.
Avatar 5:38am Bill Mac:

I remember some of the tunes on this album very clearly. My friend got a wild hair up his ass for Nostradamus. This was a big deal album back in 73 I think.

I was gonna play Love Chronicles.
Yeah man, I agree. We got a golden pickle here today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am Stanley:

Good, I'll make a pilgrimage to there one day.
Avatar 5:40am Brian in UK:

Got to do it at three in the morning in a rusty Transit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40am Stanley:

A lot on my life was spent hanging there with my thumb out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41am Stanley:

A rusty transit - perfect (whips out destination sign and prays...... please, please)

Cheap travel killed off a way of life, Brian.
Avatar 5:47am Bill Mac:

No problem Kitty. A nice request for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47am Fran:

and Rutger Hauer Stanley!
Avatar 5:47am Brian in UK:

People do not have the time to stop. When I was riding my motorbike and had the chain snap, two guys in a car took me to the local bike shop to get a new one and dropped me back. This was in '69, unlikely to happen today.
Avatar 5:48am KP:

Got 25 hours of music(?) for playlist, including some inspired by Bill and commentators here tonight! Thanks. And see youse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48am Fran:

Enjoy and endure KP

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am Stanley:

@Fran - ha ha. I remember reading a book about aliens picking up hitchers and fattening them up in underground byres to be eaten like cattle. Forgot the title.

Hopefully it'll be soon Jay!
