Robert Wyatt's voice is exceptionally distinctive.

Fairy Bread: White bread with nonpareils (= 'sprinkles' (U.S.) or 'hundreds and thousands' (U.K.)) on a spread of butter. Often cut into squares or triangles.

Wyatt is so darned awesome.

ol' faustey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm

This is my favorite 90s Faust track! (used to open dj sets w/ it).

I don't know this Faust. Seems good, though.
I saw an original member or two perform recently as Faust. It was... well... not exactly, uh... I guess it was cool to have seen it.

I also don't know John Cale as well as I should. This song is making me want to remedy that.

Have a soft spot in my heart for Cale and Kale awww

Today is my first time too hearing that era Faust.
Avatar 3:47pm

Avatar 3:48pm

their last one was quite idiosyncratic, perplexing and good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm

A double-u seems like fair-enough artistic license. You only want to go to the extreme of "sic" usage if it's something as language-rapey as apostrophe molestation, as with the La's (sic) or Los Dug-Dug's (sic).

What does sic stand for? Or is it a word unto itself? I saw it in the newspaper today. Seemingly used as SW just mentioned, a way to belittle the person being quoted.
Avatar 3:50pm

Latin adverb sic ("thus"; in full: sic erat scriptum, "thus was it written") - from wiki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm

Eric Lyon, new to me. I like where it's going.
Avatar 3:51pm
Sem Chumbo:

"Sic" is Latin and means "as written in the original." Usually, "sic" follows a misspelling published by someone else, so that they don't get blamed for it.
Avatar 3:51pm

I think "sic" how I understand it just means "verbatim in a weird way"

When I used "sic" that's what I thought of it. I never thought less of the speaker. I just wanted to maintain the quirkiness of the language without correcting it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

Usually used for words that were originally innocently or purposely spelled incorrectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

Yeah, IMHO, "sic" is not so much, "That person is shit at grammar!" as, "This isn't my fault! Don't blame me! This here is just the facts, ma'am."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm

(grammar too)

The article in the newspaper today was quoting an email which used the word "loose" instead of (the correct) "lose". It could have been non-judgmental, but I felt they could have picked a different, correctly spelled quote.

to make the person being quoted seem less dim.
Avatar 3:59pm

rw, I think a better route if you are not doing journalistic writing is to have a policy that says that letters will be edited for spelling and grammar. Most magazines and newspapers do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm

I think "sic" can also be a way to tell the editor that the spelling was intentional, and should be left alone. If one corrects, then comes the choice of putting the correction in square brackets or not, but if you do it's unclear what was rewritten

And speaking of dim... Scott, the show today (as always) is anything but. I'd say bright even. Shimmering!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

Will this be an all-Eric set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

maybe some Erik(s) as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Scott Williams:

thanks rw! look for me to be dimmering soon z'nuff (sic). fred, it'll be a 3-Eric set. No Eriks and no half-a-bees
Avatar 4:10pm

this is interesting. Like a cross between Freez and Shriekback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm

Hi all, In my shop, "sic" is used, if at all, just as Scott said -- as a means to convey "Spelling or grammar error by original speaker, who's clearly a jerk." We use it if we're looking to be snide.
Avatar 4:14pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

Nah, Chris. Just a little rumbling and my dog giving me the "huh?" look. But sad to see all those historic buildings in piles of bricks.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm

Certainly felt Sunday morning's quake though... Nothing like a Mother Earth wake up call to getcha outta bed...

Yep, for sure sad about historic buildings crumbling.

A few winos shedding a tear too, I reckon.

I suppose it was lucky that the quake happened when nobody was standing beneath those shedding bricks.

Oh, wait. I just looked it up. Seems there were some people injured.

Okay, I'm out. Bye all! Thanks for the in-depth sic clarification. WFMU listeners are anything but dim. More like sparkling, I'd say.

Scott, is this the anniversary of the movie or book Little Big Man, or did you just think that phrase up?
