D. Indemnity: one of, if not THE quintessential Noirs: the story, the visual design, the "hard -boiled" dialog, everything

Re: The flute: well, it's a classic instrument, incredibly expressive, unique timbre, etc, etc
BUT rarely EVER sounds right in a Rock context, you-know-who excepted, and some people don't like his stuff either

OBOE you di'ent...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Sem Chumbo:

Oboe? With a few matches makes excellent kindling for a bagpipe fire.
  4:30pm
P-90:

@dc: There's no other instrument that conveys the breath of the musician so intimately. The Japanese Shakuhatchi flute is amazing also, there are lots of "flutes" in world music. I can only take Herbie Mann in reasonably limited doses though...
  4:32pm
dc waters:

Take a hollow reed, and it was one of humankind's first musical instruments.
Avatar 4:34pm
d¢ pät:

double reeds are bitchin. My daughter played an oboe at school but hated it. Really bummed me out. But we ended up buying the thing so now I can ply improvisational jazz when no one's around.
  4:35pm
P-90:

The oldest flute found so far is about 43 thousand years old. They had no doubt been around for a while by then, that's just the earliest example dug up so far.
Avatar 4:37pm
d¢ pät:

that's pretty freakin old, p-90. Where was that found? Anthropilidgists say that the first instruments were probably the strings on bows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
common:

always wanted a flute. my ex-father-in-law played the oboe in the orchestra. cool shit. made his reeds out of bird bones.
  4:40pm
dc waters:

Not everything had to evolve out of weaponry. I'd still bet on a flute-like instrument as first, excepting percussion of course.
  4:40pm
P-90:

I'm trained a little bit as a paleoanthropologist myself, and for many years flutes have been acknowledged as probably the first (non-percussion) musical instruments. They keep finding older and older ones, they're made from animal bones.
Avatar 🎸 4:40pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Jinx, P-90.
Avatar 4:42pm

yeah, percussion seems more likely. But the San people of Botswana actually do play the strings on their bows even these days.

@P-90: huh.
  4:48pm
totalsunconnection:

Had to go away for a while. I thought Fred Murray was so good in Double Indemnity and wonder why he didn't have a bigger film career...
  4:51pm
dc waters:

Man, that's hatred that even talk about flutes is annoying.
  4:54pm
P-90:

Fred MacMurray was actually a major movie star in the 40's and 50's, then a TV star in the 60's. Double Indemnity is just the one we remember still, because it's such a classic.
He didn't always play good guys, he gave another first-rate performance as a real creep in "The Apartment" (1960) ALSO directed by the one-and-only Billy Wilder.
  4:56pm
P-90:

Oh yeah, and don't forget Fred also played one of the most vivid assholes of stage and screen in the movie version of "The Caine Mutiny", another classic.
  4:57pm
totalsunconnection:

Thank you P-90
Avatar 5:00pm
Fabio:

@ P-90: you are correct. Caine Mutiny is also quite good, and he is a total prick. The Apartment is a good movie, but MacMurray's part in that doesn't really take off. Anyway, he is an excellent actor regardless.
