In Grade 1 rhythm band, they made me use rubber sticks.

Time for the drums.
Avatar 9:08pm Dave Mandl:

  9:08pm P-90:

@Sem: I've seen rubber practice pads, don't know if I've ever seen rubber drumsticks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Chop Scott:

Perfect start towards this conversation--Bun E. Carlos!
I thank you.
Avatar 9:11pm Sem Chumbo:

@P-90: no drums in Grade 1, we were meant to keep time hitting two sticks together. Because I could not keep a beat, I got sticks that didn't make any sound at all:)

Give the drummers some!

my pick is Ben Riley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Mike Sin:

Enjoying this show!

Quick note -- with the early stereo Beatles LPs with the all the drums pushed to one channel, an aspiring drummer could play an LP on a stereo equipped with a turntable and a cassette deck, drum along to the music (with headphones), and overdub his own drum track on by running a live mike into one of the channels, and recording it on the cassette deck. The Beatles without drums in one channel, young drummer's new drum track in the other! I did this so many times as a young'un.
Avatar 9:38pm Holly in NC:

@Mike Sin - :-)
  9:38pm marmalade kitty:

with the beatles :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Stevel:

Hail, Mike Sin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Alex of Chicago:

That's really interesting. Didn't know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- interesting - ? - Earl Palmer was a tap-dancer - as is often remarked Drumming is like Dancing in that all four limbs are doing different things...
Trivia: Called a 'Trap' set for 'contraption' - because before that nearly every tradition in the world was one person, one drum...
- FourSeasons perhaps makes points of great drums on 'Pop' & things not generally credited w/ great drums ( - I like the Hollies' drummer!)...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm efd:

thank Irwin, this is his pick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Mike Sin:

re:Ian Paice
He could easily be the most consistently great drummer in the rock world. That dude always delivered remarkable performances throughout all the phases of Deep Purple. Great precision. In addition, his sides with the Maze (pre-Deep Purple) are powerful
Avatar 10:41pm spodiodi:

Thank you, Irwin. For Van Halen. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Scott Williams:

Love this summit; having fun trying to guess whose pick is whose w/o looking at the playlist. throw us some ringers!
Avatar 10:41pm JakeGould:

This is good. Very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Stevel:

Great stuff. I know a few drummers that I will connect to the archive on this show. Such a good exercise for a non-drummer (such as me) to tune in to that aspect.

Personal punk-rock favorite would be John McCarthy of The Alley Cats.

  10:55pm phat:

Derek & The Dominos still hit the spot.
  10:57pm Mikey Liverpool:

i feel like I'm listening to a Phil Schaap program. That's a good thing!
Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Lonely Planet Boy:

wow, never knew Gordon played on this classic. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm I.K.E. (Ice King Enterprises):

Not weird enough. :) Maybe get Bryce in on this next time?
  11:03pm P-90:

Well, Jim Gordon certainly gets around
Avatar 11:05pm Dominick:

Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Lonely Planet Boy:

didn't know Gordon was on this one, either. True, P-90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...still but a whiff of Punk this time
- but once again both schooled & entertained - can't complain! :D
  11:06pm marmalade kitty:

any female drummers in the pipes?
  11:07pm P-90:

@marmalade: good question
Avatar 11:11pm Danne D:

A masters course from 4 masters. Just wonderful.
Avatar 11:11pm Danne D:

The Robert Fripp song was interesting btw - it was sorta like an inversion of "Red"
Avatar 11:12pm Roberto:

I Always loved the drumming on What is Life? before I had any idea who was behind it. I was compelled to look it up a few years ago. Sad story about Jim.
  11:13pm todd:

Kid Millions of Onieda has been one of New York's most important drummers for over a decade
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Andrew Waterloo:

One drummer that really surprised me in a live setting was Colm Ó Cíosóig
  11:14pm nickybones:

Sure hope so, marmalade. Plenty to choose from!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

another was Mike Winnant playing with Audio One.
Avatar 11:15pm Danne D:

Sorry for a Sportsy interruption - but since EFD runs a fantasy baseball league and is one of the more sportsy DJs just wanted to let folks know Jim The Poet is putting together a free Sportsytalk ESPN fantasy football league. E-mail him here if you'd like in: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:17pm Danne D:

Hot for Teacher is pretty much my favorite song opening of anything btw :) A mildly controversial pick perhaps in some circles (there are doubters) but I'm glad to see AVH get his well-deserved due in this forum :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm steve:

i agree todd.
Avatar 11:18pm Danne D:

(Btw Hi Holly) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm efd:

Totally agree, Todd! I'd make a point of including him next time I'm on the panel and not moderating.

Not sure if any women drummers will be represented this time around - we did play a couple last time, I think.
Avatar 11:21pm Danne D:

This could be like a 24 hour show :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm steve:

my fav recentish drummers would probably be Brian Chippendale (from Lightning Bolt), Yoshimi (from Boredoms, I don't know if she does drums in OOIOO) and whoever the guy who was the played drums in Arab on Radar.
  11:21pm Troy Tulowitzki:

Oh yeah feeling this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Scott Williams:

I'm with Todd & Steve, Kid is the most energetic, fluid & spontaneously inventive drummer I've ever seen. Makes me feel like I can fly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

When I 1st heard Zach Hill (on FMU) I literally tot he was a machine.
...Skip or not, you can hear why chosen. Is this Muscle Shoals?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Matt F:

I enthusiastically second Dennis's choice here.
Avatar 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Dennis says yes (Muscle Shoals).
  11:31pm nickybones:

"Kick sounded like a drum, which is my criteria." Preach.
Swag For Life Member 11:35pm 12539:

Cigarettes! Ice cream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

What do you guys think of Ginger Baker (as a drummer)?
  11:36pm phat:

Thank you for the Bruford.
Avatar 11:37pm Danne D:

This IS John Wetton singing. I thought so.
Avatar 11:37pm Danne D:

And also thanks for the Bruford :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm efd:

Ken FHP: I'll pose that question during the next break.
  11:39pm phat:

Oh yes, it's Wetton singing and on bass. Underrated in general, I believe.
  11:40pm todd:

Avatar 11:40pm Dave Mandl:

@phat: Agreed. Really really good bassist.
  11:41pm phat:

I wish you had some recordings of one of the best drummers I've ever played with. Dze Bayles. I played with him for years and he should be famous.
  11:44pm phat:

I meant to say, "best drummers I've ever heard".
  11:44pm todd:

Evan, Allison Busch of Awesome Color kicked it in a big Detroit Rock/Grand Funk way. Don't know if she's still in Brooklyn
Avatar 11:46pm Danne D:

Yeah, Wetton shows his chops :)
Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Lonely Planet Boy:

I'll plagiarize from Friends of Distinction in describing tonight's show, "I can dig it, dig it, dig it".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Matt F:

todd- Allison is still around, her current band is called Call Of The Wild. I've never seen them because they only seem to play on nights when I'm working, but I hear they're great...
Avatar 11:46pm Holly in NC:

Hi Danne!

Re female drummers - I'n not especially keen on Warpaint, but huge fan of Stella Mozgawa. Any thoughts from experts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- loved Allison in Awesome Color.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Tome:

Great show,, love all styles of drummers .. over the years but this is just a raw power opener at it's best ,, gets the juices flowing always > bit.ly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I had to step away for a bit. I'll have to check the archive to get the whole Ginger Baker conversation. Thanks for taking my question. And thanks for the drummer special. See you next week or on your next shows, as applicable.
Avatar 11:51pm Danne D:

Thanks for this magnificent show gentlemen :)
Have a great night everyone :)
Bye Holly :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm efd:

if/when we do this again I'm going to commit to featuring drummers from just the past 20 years.
Avatar 11:53pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, folks. And thanks, EFD.
Avatar 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

@efd: Definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm efd:

Thanks everyone for listening and commenting! This show FLEW by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Scott Williams:

Please do it again & again, Evan - thanks to all 4 of you killer drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- indeed a pleasure & a privilege gentlemen - Thx.
  11:55pm P-90:

It flew by too fast! Thanks, efd and Gentlemen, really well done, a treat!
Avatar 11:55pm Danne D:

I'm tellin ya EFD - next hurricane just lock the 4 of you guys in the station and roll out the great drummer tracks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Ike:

I was just about to suggest that, EFD@11:53! Please do that! That would be VERY cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:

I was speaking only for myself, but if others want to do the same that's fine too!
Swag For Life Member 11:56pm 12539:

Wasn't the original idea that this would be a trilogy, once on each dj/drummer's show?

Great job, one and all!
  11:57pm phat:

I love this style of drums. I guess it's "prog". Bruford, 70s Phil Collins, Pip Pyle (who I had to look up), Richard Coughlan (who I also had to look up). Davis Atwood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Stevel:

Avatar 11:57pm Megadano:

Its like Danny Elfman owes his entire catalogue to this track…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm brian:

Brilliant radio. Can't wait for the next one.
  11:58pm phat:

Great show. Yes, past 20 years would be great.
  11:59pm phat:

Not the band Yes, in the past 20 years, I mean I agree. :-)
Avatar 11:59pm Danne D:

@12539 well if it's a Trilogy then there needs to be Carl Palmer on the next show :) (My fave)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Ike:

Aw dang, I hope everyone could agree to submit to that restriction, because these first 2 drum specials have been v. heavily tilted towards older sounds.
Avatar 12:01am Holly in NC:

* Sara Romweber*
  12:06am todd:

My pal Jason insisted I see Onieda in '98 at Brownies. They opened with a 30 minute Sheets of Easter and it was clear the game had changed. Sonic Youth never had drums that made you mad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am Irwin:

Absolutely in favor of next installment limited to drummers of the past 20 years, or currently working drummers regardless of when they started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am pacific standard simon:

So sorry I had to miss this show live -- had to do a sourdough demo at work -- will listen later. RE: female drummers - can't think of any outstanding, unless you include "percussionists" -- in which case, RUTH UNDERWOOD. So good.
