Favoriting July 22, 2014: Sheer Terror: the band AND the phenomenon.
For many people, Jesus is Lord and Savior. Not me. I haven't got a Lord but I DO have a savior. His name is Paul. Not Saint Paul, either. Paul Bearer-ski of the band Sheer Terror. Back in the day (where most of my stories take place), Paul was a guy in the audience of Nihilistics shows and the singer of Fathead Suburbia. One night circa 1983 we were headed to Long Island City to visit our friend EJ. A few blocks from his apartment I was waiting for a light to turn green at the corner of Thomson and Jackson Avenues when my 1972 Plymouth Fury was rear-ended by a Checker Cab. The cab hit with such force that I was knocked unconscious. When I came to, the Fury was hurtling toward a line of parked cars. Jesus take the wheel? My ass. Paul, in the passenger seat, grabbed the wheel, steered the car and hit the brakes with his left foot, bringing us to a safe stop. We piled out of the passenger side door (the driver's side door wouldn't open) into a spreading pool of gas, shaking broken glass from our clothes as we crawled to the curb. Tune in tonight to hear what happened next. And please call in with stories of the time you felt nothing but sheer terror, when you were convinced you were going to die. Who kept that from happening? Who's your savior? And were you ever in a car that ended up looking like my Fury (background)?

Is the smell coming from their armpits?

I noticed that "missing frame" effect when I spun out on an icy Sprain Brook Pkwy.

Ken From Hyde Park:

In January, 1987, I was headed south through Maryland on I-95, which I had not traveled on before. I was fiddling with the radio, then looked up and found myself careening toward eight lanes of traffic stopped at a toll plaza. Luckily, I was in the left lane and pulled onto the shoulder, zooming past the line of stopped cars. The shoulder was slushy from melting snow, but I was able to gently slow down and merge back into an open space. I was shaken and thankful that something (guardian angel?) reminded me to look up at the last moment.

Robert:

If you were headed south, then the toll plaza was BEFORE the Tydings Br., so you don't have the excuse of "bridge freezes before road surface". Similarly, my skid (around the same time) was BEFORE a bridge.

Meanwhile, is the Paul here the one about whom "Paul's Not Home" was meant?
