  Sun. 7/20/14 9:10pm Phillip.(Brooklyn):

Been a fan of jazz for years but never really got into the names and the bands.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

@Phillip: More jazz coming up now. Smokey-ish.
@RRN63: Evening!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- like - in Jazz, Monk is 2nd only to Trane for me - but attaching the Titles to the Songs?
...seriously though - this is stunning...
  Sun. 7/20/14 9:12pm P-90:

Cool. I'm up for some Smokey-ish tonight.
  Sun. 7/20/14 9:12pm Phillip.(Brooklyn):

Makes me feel like I'm in a smoke filled nightclub sitting at a table watching the band play while people smoke

Broke open "Hippies" for the first time today, gardening. What a great comp, Dave, worth many repeat plays. And now for something comletely different.

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:36pm I k e:

Loving 11232. I was in 11219, 11226, and 11230 earlier today. Anyway, sounds good.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in that respect Droll...
- Sir Macca...I like the Fireman stuff - which seems to elude Beatlemania & not be distributed to everyone & their cat...Paul critiqued for being Avant when it served his Social Climbing - whereas John was always about 1st Person Expression - but he was earlier than John when John was still Rockist. Also: John reportedly disliked Jazz...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:37pm cory:

Holy shit, I like a solo Paul McCartney song.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:37pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there. Ike.
  Sun. 7/20/14 9:38pm P-90:

Thirlling selection. And Smokey too.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:38pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Hard to argue with that. McCartney could be a social-climber and a dabbler. Did do some pretty great music, though.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:39pm Dave Mandl:

@cory: Glad to have been responsible for that.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:40pm Dave Mandl:

BTW, Mr. Kurt recently did a pretty extensive and excellent piece on McCartney's solo career.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:40pm Dave Mandl:

@Kurt: I don't have the link handy. Can you post it?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:41pm fleep:

OK, followed you, now totally informed about erratic PATH train behavior.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:42pm Dave Mandl:

We may have lost Kurt. If so, I know I've got the link somewhere.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

Here it is: oneweekoneband.tumblr.com...
  Sun. 7/20/14 9:45pm P-90:

Thanks Dave, eager to read that
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's like decades were spent debunking the idea that John was Words & Paul was Melody - but now oscillating back to the idea that Lennon was Ideas & tended to sing Monotones - & Paul was the Melodic Genius of Rock who tended to go 'lala deedee'
...all this from Tim Riley's book 'Tell Me Why', btw...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:46pm Dave Mandl:

@fleep: Not that big a deal, but it was very strange. PATH train drives to the wrong station (a station that's not even open), then announces that it's at a different station.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:50pm Kurt Gottschalk:

oh gosh, thanks dave! (sorry, i'm btw tasks over here). here's a link for the mccartney thing with all the posts in reverse order. i thought there was a better one but maybe not. oneweekoneband.tumblr.com...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:52pm Ike:

The Port Authority is v. incompetent lately and esp. doesn't give a flying rat's rump about weekend or late night passengers, but that really crowns it, Dave. Glad to be mainly riding MTA now, they look quite solid by comparison.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:52pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ok, here's a link where you don't have to stand on your head while reading: oneweekoneband.tumblr.com...

i hate how blogs make the world upside down.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:56pm pacific standard simon:

Good evening Dave and the usual suspects. Gotta eat dinner before I can hang with y'all.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 9:56pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, pss. Yeah, sustenance comes first.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:02pm Kurt Gottschalk:

chicago underground duo, chicago underground trio, chicago underground quartet ... was there a quintet too?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:03pm Kurt Gottschalk:

and i know there's at least a couple 45+ minute art ensemble of chicago tracks, that'll get you a lot of the way there.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:04pm Kurt Gottschalk:

pretty sure paul doesn't play on thrillington.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:04pm Droll:

3,589 bands with Chicago in their name, 9,487 bands with "New York" in their name.

That was definitely Sir Paul on bass, which sounded out of place with the orchestral arrangements.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:06pm Kurt Gottschalk:

really, droll? def? i was under the impression paul wasn't on the sessions.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:08pm Kurt Gottschalk:

don't listen to dave. him, irwin and evan are all real drummers.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:10pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i know it's not definitive but wikipedia credits herbie flowers with bass on thrillington, who could sound like paul for sure - especially if he decided to try!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:11pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm starting to think i've finished working for the night.

did judy chicago make any records?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:11pm Droll:

kg, Someone's playing electric bass along with that track. It had that McCartney phrasing that leads the chord changes... If it's not Paul, they aped his sound and style for sure.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:12pm Uncle Michael:

Harry the hairy Ape vs. Guitarzan
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:14pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm willing to go with herbie flowers, droll. from what i've read, paul worked with richard hewson in planning the record and arrangements but wasn't present for the recordings.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:15pm Kurt Gottschalk:

but diamond dave mandl would probably know, if he'd just quit dj'ing for a dang minute.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:16pm Uncle Michael:

The only Richard Hewson stuff I know is the Melody soundtrack. I should know more.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Kurt: No, I don't. I was guessing, because that's obviously a bass guitar and could be him. I'm sure what you've read is right. Anything any Beatle has done has been documented and researched by a million people.
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:18pm P-90:

For what it's worth, I ve put my time in studying Paul's playing too, and I heard McCartney-INfluenced playing on that track, not Paul himself. I could be wrong of course...
Sun. 7/20/14 10:18pm listener phillip in brooklyn:

ahhhhh:-) Miles Davis
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:19pm Dave Mandl:

@Phillip: Yeah, it's Hooked on Jazz Classics tonight.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:20pm Kurt Gottschalk:

richard hewson did phil spector's arrangements for some 'let it be' tracks as well. 'the long and winding road' and maybe the title tune.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:20pm Droll:

kg, I could believe Herbie Flowers, but the likeness is still uncanny. If that question is the most interesting part of the album, we've all failed: composers, performer, and listener.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:22pm JakeGould:

Hey there, Jazz-night.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:22pm Kurt Gottschalk:

that question is not the most interesting part of the album. i like that album a lot. but that's the question that was raised. herbie played with lou reed, elton john, t-rex, etc. i have no doubt he could ape paul mccartney if asked.
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:22pm P-90:

@Droll: NOT the most interesting part by a any means.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:23pm Dave Mandl:

Agreed, it's a very good record.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:23pm northguineahills:

Ahh, Sunday night....

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:30pm Dave Mandl:

Psychedelic Chubby Checker. Nothing to see here.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:31pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:32pm Uncle Michael:

This is sensational.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:33pm Kurt Gottschalk:

there's no way chubby checker is on that record. gotta be herbie flowers.

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:40pm Dave Mandl:

Ah, I hadn't seen that blog post. Seemed no reason to doubt it was Chubby, but I'd never seen definite confirmation. I'm guessing the producer did all the real work.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:40pm pacific standard simon:

Yeah, I'll listen to ANY record that features a "quadrangularus reversum"!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:42pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i was goofing about it not being chubby, re: mccartney / herbie flowers discussion above.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:43pm Droll:

I thing Paul might played all the instruments on the Chubby Checker record because I read Paul plays everything.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:44pm Kurt Gottschalk:

prince played all the instruments on the chubby checker record but he won't release the tapes.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:44pm Kurt Gottschalk:

herbie flowers is filling in for dave mandl tonight.
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:44pm P-90:

I wanna hear the Chubby track that sounds like 'Jimi Hendrix Jamming with Blue Cheer"
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:45pm JakeGould:

Prince is great. Just need to say that since I am rediscovering Prince.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

And the part of Chubby Checker was played by Paul Winchell!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:45pm northguineahills:

This Zeena Parkins is new to me, quite nice....
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:45pm Kurt Gottschalk:

prince is amaze. just need to say that because jakegould said that.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:46pm JakeGould:

Kurt is amaze balls because I think Kurt is at that high/drunk point where if I don’t agree with him it will be all awkward.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:47pm Droll:

kg, Wrong again -- Stevie Wonder plays all the instruments on Prince records.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:47pm Kurt Gottschalk:

jakegould you are very wise.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:47pm pacific standard simon:

Can I be ring bearer at your wedding?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:47pm Kurt Gottschalk:

droll, prince paid stevie wonder to play all the instruments on all his records so same thing.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:47pm JakeGould:

Whatever you say bro. Need some water?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:48pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:49pm JakeGould:

You see, I predicated it!
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:49pm P-90:

@ Droll: Yeah but most of Stevie Wonder's tracks are played by Herbie Flowers. And sung by Chubby Checker and Sonny Buono, little-known fact

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Strike 1.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:51pm Droll:

I heard Kenzo wrote all the code for Facebooks because he writes all the code. Barry Manilow did not write I Write The Songs, but Barry wrote every TV jingle not covered by The Carpenters, and Herbie Flowers plays on most of those records, too.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Kurt: NOW I'm going to have Ken cancel your account.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:52pm JakeGould:

I misspelled predicted as predicated. So many things going wrong tonight.
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:53pm P-90:

@pss: And I got an email politely but firmly asking me to stop posting so much about Dee Snider.
  Sun. 7/20/14 10:54pm P-90:

@ Jake: You spoiled it! "Predicated" was cuter
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 10:54pm Droll:

p-90, Me too. I just delete them.

Okay folks, looks like tonight has enough mistakes that this one is going to be a do-over. Therese's show is going to need to be rescheduled.

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:04pm Dave Mandl:

Still the temporary replacement mic. I miss the real mic.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:06pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:10pm Droll:

um, Not me, I'm still working my way through the epic Loss Leaders show. I'm about halfway through '74 (the pinnacle of rock music). Thanks for playing them in the order they were originally heard -- very important!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:12pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Actually Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:12pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:12pm pacific standard simon:

Uncle Michael deserves the Medal of Honor for that one.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:13pm Ike:

Agreed, NGH. I got a brief flashback to Clay C.'s 90s show, the Pounding System. One of my old faves.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:13pm Uncle Michael:

The songs were out of order but the albums weren't....except for that one Big Ball track I got out of sequence.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:13pm northguineahills:

True that, UM's show was epic.

Clay C's show was a forever ago, it seems.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:13pm Droll:

um, I take that back -- I did comment on your mic, but I think I was just responding to your question. You leave many easter eggs for archive listeners.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:14pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks guys...but enough about me (not really).
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:15pm pacific standard simon:

We are Normal - & we are the 2% !!
  Sun. 7/20/14 11:18pm P-90:

@Pufnstuf Dude: Yes! I had to leave halfway through, but I'll definitely listen to the rest of the "Loss Leaders" epic, at least once. And playing them in order was absolutely the way to go. That may be the ONLY such comprehensive review of those that's ever been done, and they're worth it, an overlooked bit of music biz history. Bravo.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that was Jimi w/ BlueCheer - really?...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:22pm Uncle Michael:

I'm glad people liked that. Sometimes I'm not sure if an idea is goofy or not.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

By the way, Dave, I heard a version of a Zombies track on my cow orker's Pandora feed today that was definitely a re-recording. Mentioned because of your article on the practice.
  Sun. 7/20/14 11:24pm Ralphine:

Thanks a lot for playing that Zombies tune. It had taken me a couple of days to get Argent's "Hold Your Head Up" out of my head, but now it's back.
  Sun. 7/20/14 11:24pm P-90:

"Loss Leaders Retro" = totally UNgoofy. Exactly the kind of thing that commercial radio (incl. NPR) would never make the time for.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Horrors!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@Ralpine: My pleasure. Man, I need to hear that Argent song now. What a great song.

Is there a link to Dave's article on re-records, Simon?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- always a fave of mine that Pepper was Abbey Rd. 2 when Floyd's 'Piper' was AbbeyRd. 1
- & then 1st in AR2 after (says Mojo mag.) was Zombies' 'Odessey' (they said - nono - don't disconnect those 4-trax that make more trax than 4 from each other just yet...) - altho' wigkey says 'Odessey' done a few places...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:31pm pacific standard simon:

I'm sure Dave would have that handier than I. It was around a year ago.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:32pm Uncle Michael:

I'll google.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:33pm Uncle Michael:

www.slate.com...

"CECECD"? or "CECEDC"?
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:35pm Droll:

What was that tuning again? (no irony - seriously)
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:36pm Dave Mandl:

CECECD
  Sun. 7/20/14 11:36pm P-90:

@Pufnstuf Dude: Thanks for the link. Looks cool...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:37pm Uncle Michael:

I think Dave has exceeded 2% tonight.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Xactly!! Mentioned this on Trouble's: Original Artist but *not* Original Version! Old guy vocals w/ cheap keyborads...Bewareness...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:39pm Uncle Michael:

I got bit in the ass by a re-record of Bobby Goldsboro's "Summer (The First Time)" a few years ago and never fully recovered. Some are so close you get lost in the uncanny valley.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

That was fast. The article stuck in my head because I'd had a similar experience trying to get music by The Drifters from eMusic. Bad enough that there are fake versions of The Drifters out there performing, but replacing the original songs on digital download sites...
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...or was it Nazarios's...yeah...)
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:46pm northguineahills:

Cool, Black Dog!
  Sun. 7/20/14 11:46pm P-90:

Shame on you, Bobby Goldsboro!

@ "CECECD" Is really weird, it's not an "open" tuning or a "fourths" tuning, or a slide tuning, just weird. If you Google it you ONLY see it associated with Blackshaw's name. Apparently its a 12-string tuning, but did he tune all the stings in octaves, or just the first four? Must investigate.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:55pm Andrew Waterloo:

I wonder if Blackshaw is playing a baritone guitar.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:56pm Droll:

P-90, I love the close-tuned strings like the CD pair, easier to make tight clusters and piano-like voicings. On a 12-string the high E course is going to be clashing with the high D string -- all those notes are going to be crammed in together. Very cool dense sounds!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Dave, it was a good evening set!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:58pm pacific standard simon:

Make Therese tell us what she did with Casey Kasem's body!

Good night, Dave -- see ya next.
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:59pm Droll:

Thanks, DM. Have a fun week, yinz!
Avatar Sun. 7/20/14 11:59pm pacific standard simon:

Fart.
Avatar Mon. 7/21/14 12:00am Dave Mandl:

Thanks, folks. Have a great week.
  Mon. 7/21/14 12:00am P-90:

@ Droll: Yeah, that's the idea, to generate tons of interesting overtones. Hmm.

@DJ Dave : Thanks, great show as always! Reading up now on re-recordings...
