how cute!
Avatar 3:03pm Mark Helsten:

Great choice!! Happy Friday
Avatar 3:04pm Sem Chumbo:

The post Civil War period is filled with melancholy ballads such as this one, recorded on a hard beeswax taper, an early medium of sound transfer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Caryn:

Hello all!
Avatar 3:08pm Kurt Gottschalk:

good afternoon, everyone!
Avatar 3:10pm glenn:

mmmmm. baguettes.
Avatar 3:10pm Mark Helsten:

Good afternoon Kurt! Though I can hardly speak for _everyone_....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Caryn:

We had a bagatelle game when I was a kid.
  3:13pm Dean:

@Sem Chumbo: There was, for example, "Song Sung Gray."
Avatar 3:15pm ranjit:

Last night I dreamed that I was visiting some other city where Kurt was leading a bike ride to a museum on a beach. He promised "summer jams."
Avatar 3:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

that really happened, ranjit!
  3:17pm nak11:

This Varosha thing is really cool.
Avatar 3:20pm glenn:

last night i dreamed my cat was sleeping on my head. then i woke up........and she was sleeping on my head.
Avatar 3:23pm ranjit:

aww man, I missed it, because I woke up before we left the meeting point. I missed the summer jams.

And when I woke up, glenn's cat was sleeping on my head!
Avatar 3:30pm Sem Chumbo:

@dean: nice one, Johnny Reb.
Avatar 3:31pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Microscopic Minotaurs!
  3:40pm r i s k y:

Owww! Kurt we're all ears over hear!
Avatar 3:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Neil Diamond's jacket is woven of the stars themselves; a glittering asphalt midnight of expert tailoring and male pattern baldness, can I get an amen..
Avatar 3:43pm Kurt Gottschalk:

"disembooty" ha!!
Avatar 3:44pm Kurt Gottschalk:

turnip you crackin' me up!
  3:48pm r i s k y:

  3:53pm r i s k y:

People are asking 'What is this?'.
I look at my speaker solemnly and say 'It's been like this all day.'
Avatar 4:06pm glenn:

Avatar 4:07pm glenn:

gary played some iranian (?) abba covers on bodega pop. pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Caryn:

The first hour's been so good that I'm really going to feel bad missing next Friday's show. Good thing the archives exist.
Avatar 4:10pm steve:

wow, the hits just keep comin
Avatar 4:10pm Mark Helsten:

Some tasty scores on the 45s!
  4:15pm btown:

song brings back memories, regardless of the language
Avatar 4:19pm Mark Helsten:

A Canadian hit!
Avatar 4:20pm Seanbelly:

This version shouldn't be so funny, should it?
Avatar 4:20pm Mark Helsten:

The original is dead f'n serious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm rsj:

who stole the kieshka?
Avatar 4:21pm Seanbelly:

Serious, but happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Caryn:

I wonder if the Czech "Seasons in the Sun" mentions the adultery, because some versions, like Terry Jacks, sure omitted that bit?
Avatar 4:23pm Mark Helsten:

I thought Terry wrote it!
Avatar 4:25pm Mark Helsten:

jesus, do I feel dumb! Jacques Brel!
Avatar 4:26pm Mark Helsten:

I just never considered it past being an 8 year old...
Avatar 4:27pm glenn:

don't feel bad, mark. i always thought terry jacks wrote it as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Caryn:

Interesting version, but can't beat the Sammy Davis Jr. version (except in tempo... this is a fast one!)
Avatar 4:28pm Mark Helsten:

I just wish it was someone less cool than Jacques who wrote it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Caryn:

I grew up with the McKuen version of "Seasons in the Sun".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Caryn:

The Nirvana version of "Seasons in the Sun" ain't half bad, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm davex:

Whoops, just missed the new old Czech set, and will have to hit the archives. Just got the premium CD though, which is great! Thanks, Kurt!
  4:34pm ScottC:

I love "Charade"! watch it over and over. The movie fell out of copyright (!!??!) so you can see it on youtube...
  4:40pm ScottC:

@Caryn I lived across the street form Rod McKuen in the 60's ( Haight Ashbury) And when he moved away ( L.A.?) we kids would sneak around his abandoned house and watch the mail pile up. Then one day a giant yellow machine with big teeth came and ate the wooden house right down to the foundation. He wrote a poem about this period called "Stanyon St" I believe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=233rTu8wdhg&feature=kp
Avatar 4:41pm Mark Helsten:

Hoping to hear Baby Elephant Walk...
  4:41pm M:

Love your show
Super, Greek composer is fantastic
He has a great site, many thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Caryn:

@ScottC: cool!
Avatar 4:44pm Marshall Stacks:

I can *just* understand the Yiddish in this Tea for Two.
  4:46pm ScottC:

@Caryn It's weird but that 3 block stretch ( Willard to Cole on Parnassus - crossing Stanyon) has had a few "famous" people living there. Michael Moore and the diminutive "craig" from craigslist...
  4:53pm r i s k y:

  4:56pm Dean:

McKuen wrote an entire book about Stanyan Street and environs: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/482215.Stanyan_Street_Other_Sorrows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm brendanswfmuaccount:

Is this piece from Christof Kurzmann and Burkhard Stangl new?
I don't see it listed on Erstwhile's site.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Who's up for beersies?
Avatar 5:01pm Kurt Gottschalk:

brendan, yes it is, the "song sung blue" 18 minute track is from neue schnee on erstpop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm brendanswfmuaccount:

Scratch that, found it.
  5:04pm Dean:

Very bad news, very sad news. Utterly shocking.
Avatar 5:06pm glenn:

well, i'm sad he died, but shocking? he was 77 years old.
  5:08pm Dean:

I had no idea he had been so ill. I saw him not *that* long ago. These days 77 isn't all that old, either. And he had a cherubic visage.
  5:10pm Dean:

New record with Keith Jarrett: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jun/12/keith-jarrett-charlie-haden-last-dance-review
Avatar 5:12pm steve:

what a heavy song. RIP.
Avatar 5:31pm Cecile:

What was shocking to me is that I thought Charlie Haden was already dead. Oops
Avatar 5:32pm Mark Helsten:

Holy shit.... I just realized what you are talking about. RIP Mr. Haden
Avatar 5:35pm Cecile:

he's a giant, for sure.
Avatar 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Charlie Haden !!
...My straight-ahead Jazz 'mentor'/surrogate big brother when I lived on the West Coast was a major Charlie Haden enthusiast - & I met Charlie once !; saw the Quartet West in L.A. the same day I saw McCoy Tyner's smoking trio ! Wow.
  5:39pm Dean:

It seems like only three or four years ago, but I saw him back in late '05 with Alan Broadbent and an amazing Liberation Music Orchestra. BTW, he wasn't quite 77. His birthday would have been not four weeks away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm common:

hey kurt and people. been playing hooky from my stupid job. hello!
  5:41pm Listening Out There:

Haden had an *amazing* life, considering singing country music when young, Ornette, West Coast jazz, Liberation Music Orchestra, triplet daughters, son in law Jack Black.
Avatar 5:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Just came back from a freakishly long meeting (on a friday afternoon, yet) - and just sussing the theme here. Drag. I was just jamming that Coltrane/Cherry LP recently; permanent classic.
Avatar 5:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He was Politically Righteous & quite bravely outspoken - as well as both an innovative & soulful Bass master - & encouraging to students - & everyone. A great authority & communicator of Music & what it means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm common:

yea. sorry i missed most of this show. going back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm adrian in mpls:

yeah - thanks for playing all this Haden. Besides the music, I have always really appreciated his political commitment.
Avatar 5:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

That quartet with Ornette/Cherry/Haden/Blackwell is still one of the greatest alchemical mysteries of all time...
Avatar 5:48pm Cecile:

you know it Rev.
  5:52pm Dean:

Er, typo in the notes, Kurt?
Avatar 5:53pm Kurt Gottschalk:

probably somewhere, not sure what you mean
Avatar 5:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

oh christ
  5:54pm Dean:

Right. Less said the better.
Avatar 5:56pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for catching that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Caryn:

Missed the typo but I think I can guess what it was. D'oh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm chris:

love this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm adrian in mpls:

wow, this simultaneously makes me very happy and very sad
  6:01pm Dean:

It turns out the new Jarrett/Haden disk was recorded in '07.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm chris:

oh dear god... just tuned in... fuck! I will miss him.
