You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Because I lute you.
Avatar 9:12pm dk:

there's been an embarrassment of great angus maclise stuff coming out over the past year or so, what with this sub rosa record and the boo-hooray discs. it has made me very happy, and substantially less wealthy.
Swag For Life Member 9:13pm 12539:

(O no, not lutes and ouds again)
Avatar 9:13pm dk:

i'm hoping la monte young doesn't have to die to get the same kind of retrospective appreciation.
  9:17pm PB:

Well, that is some very nice acoustic guitar work.
Avatar 9:17pm dk:

it totally is.

This whole series of solo acoustics on VDSQ looks to be good www.vdsqrecords.com...

Did Mike Cooper just release an album with Steve Gunn or do I have my guitarists mixed up.
  9:27pm steve:

hey Dan B
Avatar 9:29pm dk:

yeah, one of the frkwys series is them pb.
Avatar 9:29pm Dan Bodah:

@PB, yes, they just put out a phenomenal record together on RVNG Intl's FRKWYS series that pairs established musicians with younger folks influenced by them.
Avatar 9:29pm Dan Bodah:

@steve, hey
  9:30pm PB:

@DB. Thanks. Yeah, I'll have to pick it up,
Swag For Life Member 9:40pm 12539:

I haven't read it, but "Paradise..." is a Melville story:
  9:40pm PB:

Steve Gunn also played with Kurt Vile's touring band (the Violators), didn't he?
Avatar 9:40pm dk:

i had no idea "rvng" was "revenge international". i've always mentally pronounced it "Irving".

I concur w/ steve's statement, lol.

DB, are you OK? This is getting a little bizarre. I hope it is just a put on.

fleep, Why no half-mast for Michael Jackson and Elvis?

With The Necks as a bed, DB can, in theory, go on for days.
Avatar 10:12pm dk:

there's a million-dollar app idea: amihalfornot: an app for building managers to decide whether to lower their flags.

  10:21pm steve:

how many songs have been back announced? two?
Avatar 10:22pm Droll:

fleep, Whitney?! I'm talkin' about Michael Jackson.

At this pace he'll never finish the back-announce before the show is scheduled to end.
Avatar 10:22pm Jeff:

In the same vein as wondering about getting flags enhalfstaffened on the occasion of one's death: I remember hearing Vin Scelsa muse at some length a few years back about what sort of recognition might make one a shoo-in for a New York Times obit.

I think the subject came up partly because a few days before he'd ended up discussing that question with someone particularly concerned with that aspect of his own posterity - perhaps Jonathan Schwartz, although the details are lost in time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Ike:

That would be epic, Droll.
  10:23pm blee:

This is hilarious. I hope you can announce you hour long set, taking an hour long to do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Parq:

I'm in and out of the kitchen, so I gotta go back and listen to this again tomorrow. Heck, Pseu has pretty much made an entire FMU career out of this sort of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm fleep:

Droll, okay then ... www.today.com...
Avatar 10:24pm dk:

i'm betting dylan has got word of the death tape and has decided to outlive the last DAT player just to spite FMU.

frankly, my money's on dylan in that race, unless DAT enjoys the same sort of revival cassettes did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm fleep:

It's like a warm word bath.
  10:28pm bloopy:

is dan still going? I had to take a break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Ike:

DK, I was wondering about the outcome of that race myself. A few years ago, DAT was still popular for professional uses in radio even though consumers never picked it up. But that might not be the case anymore... not sure... anybody know?
Avatar 10:30pm Droll:

Were going to need a separate playlist for songs mentioned, but not played, during this break.
  10:31pm steve:

are we still in Silverwater?
Avatar 10:37pm JakeGould:

It’s all an illusion. And sometimes it reflects and illusion you agree with. Other times, it’s dissonant. Sometimes you want ice cream. Other times you want yogurt. Life.
  10:37pm blee:

Aaron Sheppard song was nice, vinyl is $20 on amazon, yipes!
  10:39pm blee:

What is mu?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Will we be tested on this material?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm fleep:

mu is between lambda and nu. what's nu?
  10:42pm blee:

Nu is best forgotten. Aka nu-metal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Not much. What's nu with you?
Avatar 10:47pm JakeGould:

Is this like summer semester with the cool teacher?
  10:47pm blee:

Just taught my daughter to say "Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan," in a theatrical manner.
Swag For Life Member 10:48pm 12539:

I had to take a phone call. Did he get to Angus Maclise yet?
  10:50pm phat:

I lost track. How long has this been going on?
  10:51pm steve:

I don't think so12539
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm fleep:

My best guess is "Silverwater" is 67:15 and we're going to hear the whole thing, under him.
Avatar 10:52pm JakeGould:

@phat I started using a power drill at about 9:30pm to get a project started. Now as of 10:30pm that part of my project is done. Da dum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Parq:

Phat, he just cleared the hour mark.
  10:53pm bloopy:

Has he had a drink of water yet?
  10:56pm steve:

I'm pretty sure Silverwater looped about 10 mins ago, no?
Avatar 10:57pm JakeGould:

My Dinner With Dan
  11:05pm Robert:

Xltrs & low power calls are as "real" as regular ones, but use a different naming convention & aren't required to ID by call. I used to listen to W276AQ, which IDd as "Juke Box Radio".
  11:07pm phat:

was maclise authentic?
  11:07pm Robert:

The low power calls start with W or K (geographic), then have the 3-digit no. for the FM channel they're on, then 2 letters which are assigned in lexical order, starting with AA & theoretically ending with ZZ.
Avatar 11:09pm MikeY:

  11:12pm Robert:

MikeY, I remember when Mr. Bodah took a really long mike break with a guest in the studio & started to back announce a long set that had in it a title that was absolutely filthy. He managed to stall long enough to just "forget" about it, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Ike:

But Dan is right that translators are of a sort of lower class in the "caste system" of transmitters. They cannot originate their own programming and can only re-transmit another station; and if a "real" station moves in, translators are not entitled to any protection & will fall like pawns.

Speaking of lower-class, look Y the cat just dragged in....
  11:15pm Robert:

Heh...at the time I listened to W276AQ, I was an Arbitron diary keeper, and the 5-character call didn't fit in the space for call sign on their form.
Swag For Life Member 11:15pm 12539:

Translators are *not* authentic.
  11:16pm biffy:

wee luv burgerz
  11:18pm markdavess:

I had an experience at that same venue in Moscow with Tibetan music. They were playing the same repetitive thing for probably 10 minutes and I was totally conscious but thoughtless, a trance maybe. I only became aware that this had been happening (both the music and my state) when they changed the rhythm and thought returned to me.
  11:18pm Robert:

Ike, unless the rules have changed, low power stns. don't have to fx as xltrs & can have unique programming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm sinister dexter:

turned my volume down an hour ago
  11:19pm biffy:

you can has afford Moscow¿ you argh reech!
Avatar 11:23pm Droll:

Without the hourly reminders, I'd never know what station I was listening to or how to find it again. How radio technology works is completely invisible to the user -- radio is magic.

This radio show is pure magic.

  11:24pm Bootsie:

There is no difference between religion and cults.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Parq:

No, actually, sleeping late is a great way to start the weekend, but if you're stuck getting up early, Jeffery's show is nice to have around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Ike:

Yeah, that's true, Robert. I was just talking about translators (specifically the ones w/the naming convention you described), not the relatively new LP phenomenon.
  11:46pm Robert:

So what you wrote was true BY DEFINITION. Xltrs are those stations that repeat a primary station. But in some cases, the xltr is the true primary, and the listed primary is an excuse for the xltr!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm DMcK:
