Avatar 9:02pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, friends and neighbors.
Swag For Life Member 9:02pm 12539:

Bon Soir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, aural sports fans -- who's yer Davey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you *sure* you wanna start this great - ?? It's a three-hour show...
  9:04pm JakeGould:

Nice start to a non-steamy yet summery Brooklyn day.
Avatar 9:05pm Dave Mandl:

Welcome, 12539, pss, RRN63, Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm pacific standard simon:

Where ya been, Rabbit?
Avatar 9:07pm Dave Mandl:

Down a rabbit hole?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm pacific standard simon:

That sounds steamy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Any uh youze down there experience NYC-henge this weekend - ?? :
...pss: Mgr. Ken limited me to 8 comments/show & I were oh-ffended, but now it seems like a lot, is the short version (I'm drinkin' wine here)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm pacific standard simon:

Sorry to hear it -- I'll refrain from asking you any more questions, so you can speak as you please.

I'm afraid there are limitations other than cloud cover that prevent me from observing Manhattan sunsets.
  9:18pm HollyT:

*runs in, slams door* Hi Dave! Sorry I'm late!
Avatar 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly. I thought you'd never arrive.
  9:21pm JakeGould:

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: Manhattan-henge is not as cared about as you think. Other than bloggers. I think Gothamist get’s a nice boost in page-views when that happens. I like to just call it sunset & experience it all the time.
  9:21pm JakeGould:

Holy, for three weeks we’ve been talking about the Platt amendment…
  9:22pm HollyT:

And now you're not. So I arrived just in time. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm pacific standard simon:

I just found this Sugarcane Harris record online, Sugarcane's Got The Blues, recorded at the Berliner Jazztage Festival in 1971, with THIS awesome line-up:

Don “Sugarcane” Harris (electric violin, vocals),
Volker Kriegel (guitar),
Terje Rypdal (guitar),
Wolfgang Dauner (piano),
Neville Whitehead (bass) &
Robert Wyatt (drums).

Haven't listened to it yet, but it made me think of this show.
  9:26pm P-90:

Hi DJ Dave M., pss, Jake, Holly, #12539, & everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm pacific standard simon:

Howdy P-90. For once, I got supper cooked and eaten before the show. Probably because Mrs. Pacific Standard did the main course.
  9:28pm moontana:

Sugarcane Harris with Terje Rypdal & Robert Wyatt? I need to hear that record.
  9:29pm JakeGould:

Yo P-90! Whattup! You in NYC, right? Do you still have illegal fireworks happening whoever you are? Bay Ridge is blowing up… A bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, Dave, some FMU jocks can play two 2 1/2 minute tracks in a row from the A & B sides of the same single!
  9:32pm HollyT:

Swag For Life Member 9:33pm 12539:

Good job, Dave.
  9:33pm moontana:

that's a pretty long minute track. I think it said it all at 30 seconds.
Avatar 9:34pm Dave Mandl:

Portella/Racaille was under a minute. The Fat track was almost two minutes. I was being a drama queen.
  9:35pm P-90:

@JakeG: a few pops here and there, winding down.

@pss: now I gotta ask: What was the supper menu?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm pacific standard simon:

@moontana - You need to do a Google search for willard's wormholes and scroll down just a bit.
Avatar 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Yeah, that's an old favorite of mine. Also, my cat used to love it.
Avatar 9:37pm Dave Mandl:

Very hard to find this LP now, but you'd love it, Holly: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm pacific standard simon:

@P-90 - Pork tenderloin with fresh raspberry sauce, and roasted new potatoes with garlic, rosemary & lemon. Simple but effective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm pacific standard simon:

Bert playing the banjo himself? Must be. Sounds almost like an Indian instrument.
Avatar 9:45pm Dave Mandl:

Yeah, that was him playing the banjo. Nice, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm pacific standard simon:

So good. The articulation of the arpeggios, you might say.
  9:49pm Carmichael:

Aloha Dave and listeners. Good evening/day/morning, depending on your GPS coords.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm pacific standard simon:

Book 'em, Carmo.
Swag For Life Member 9:54pm 12539:

Stop fiddling with that mike, Dave! Play with some jewel cases if you must.
  9:55pm moontana:

Try Rolf Lislevand, Diminuito 2009 ECM. Renaissance lute kicks Jansch.
Avatar 9:55pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: I'm trying to stop with the jewel cases. The mic is my methadone.
  9:55pm JakeGould:

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! And if it is broke, you really can’t break it any worse. (<-- My philosophy.)
Avatar 9:56pm Droll:

I wanna hear the boom when it goes down! I'll be we can still hear the obscenity that follows, too.
Avatar 9:58pm Dave Mandl:

@moontana. Thanks! I'll look that up. We might have it here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm pacific standard simon:

Where's that duct tape (and WD40) dude when you need him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm pacific standard simon:

Also, oud kicks lute ass.
Avatar 10:00pm Dave Mandl:

I'm proud to host a lute vs. oud fight.
  10:00pm JakeGould:

You mean, Whooda, PSS. The Duct-Tape/WD-40 guy has a name & a persona.
Avatar 10:00pm Droll:

$10 on the Oud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm pacific standard simon:

I know, but more playlist people will understand my question if it's "that duct tape (and WD40) dude".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...loser gets Tar'd & feathered...
  10:03pm JakeGould:

Screw you Oud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm pacific standard simon:

OK -- THAT was worth one of your 8 comments! :D
  10:07pm marmalade kitty:

Oud; pronounced ood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm pacific standard simon:

As far as I know. Also often spelled "ud".
Avatar 10:08pm Dave Mandl:

@kitty: Yup.
  10:09pm JakeGould:

Ud, Oud. Whatever. Ram it.
Swag For Life Member 10:10pm 12539:

Are oud players oudists?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm KK:

Evening Dave and commenters, enjoying the show tonight from an unairconditioned room. Nice slow pace to Sunday night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'ah-ood' ??
...Lotte, Marlene Deitrich & Piaf walk into a bar
...& buy me wine - & the more I drink, the luthier I get w/ comments...
  10:12pm P-90:

We LOVE Lotte!!!
  10:12pm marmalade kitty:

I've tried to tune one, thinking it was a lute. now I know! fatter with shorter neck
  10:15pm marmalade kitty:

The person who wnted me to tune it had even less clue than I :p
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Ouda Ellameye:

You're asking ME, Dave? Of course I know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm pacific standard simon:

Have you ever endured Lester Bangs' ('71?) article about The Godz (on the ESP label)? after that, you knew what punk was before Johnny & Joe did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm pacific standard simon:

This actually sounds like a combination of Hawkwind & The Fall. Not bad.
Avatar 10:23pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there KK, P-90.
Avatar 10:24pm Droll:

I thought MC5 and Hawkwind, and also not too bad.
Avatar 10:25pm Dave Mandl:

And good evening to you, Droll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm pacific standard simon:

It always gives me succor that Jello Biafra was a HUGE Hawkwind fan before he discovered punk.
Avatar 10:26pm Dave Mandl:

And Keith Levene was a Yes fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as were John(ny) Lydon(/Rotten)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm pacific standard simon:

You don't really have to listen to anyone but the drummer on this Exploding Star Orchestra track.
Avatar 10:27pm Droll:

I'd like to point out I did not draw the straight-line connection from prog to punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...to pss...Lydon & Yes a tiny bit of a stretch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm pacific standard simon:

Not believing a bit of it, meself. Wasn't Rotten the one who wore a Pink Floyd T-shirt with the word "SUCKS" scribbled on it?
  10:30pm JakeGould:

The thing about Yes is no matter how much anyone wants to take a dump on them, the musical family tree that band is connected to is fairly amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Droll: Pistols>Iggy>Cale>Eno>Everybody...straight enuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

pss: Yeah - & Costello called Ray Charles 'a stupid blind nigger' - when harrassed enuff inthe 70s in the MidWest; Lydon was a Hawkwind acidhead - purely a matter of record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm pacific standard simon:

Still waiting to hear from one punker who will admit to enjoying some form of classical music. I know they're out there...
  10:34pm JakeGould:

John Lydon was antagonistic? *faints*
Avatar 10:37pm Droll:

Jake, No fair! Yes is it's own family tree -- most bands don't have 27 members and book shows two lineups at a time.
  10:38pm Carmichael:

I loves me some acoustic droning. Do NOT change keys.
  10:40pm JakeGould:

@Droll The reason I mention the “Yes” hate is I have heard some cliched B.S. from aging punks who complain about “Yes” in the 1970s & how the Ramones changed the world. Which I understand to a point. But “Yes” is a bit more than just a band to have a dichotomy with. Their prog rock noodling is horrid, but their first few albums are great. I hate Jethro Tull but when they were good, wow… They were good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm pacific standard simon:

@Rabbit - Anyone who could read between the lines knew what Elvis (in his drunken, stupid way) meant -- that the people he was addressing (Stephen Stills, et al) were pathetic for trying to imitate people they couldn't -- and WOULDN'T -- want to BE.

Or maybe that's just my take.
  10:43pm JakeGould:

To be fair, all reports on Elvis Costello point to him being a pro to-twee a-hole. So all fair.
Avatar 10:44pm Droll:

Yes are horrid noodlers? You must be looking for a fight. I'd like to remind you it's you against 35 current and former Yes members.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

That's fair. He probably is. I just reserve the right as to how I think about him being one.
  10:46pm JakeGould:

Prog rockers will lose in any fight. One push & suddenly they are noodling on a bunch of oddball instruments in a corner, alone.
  10:47pm marmalade kitty:

just say No
Avatar 10:48pm Peteski:

I'm listening with headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm pacific standard simon:

All I remember about Yes is that I kinda liked them when I was VERY stoned in '72. And didn't have many current records to compare theirs to. Otherwise, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...every Genre has it's good & crap, is all it is
...I'm still getting used to the idea that people consider Styx & Kansas 'Prog' (...anybody here would probably argree that Van der Graf Generator are more 'Punk' that a lot of what gets listened to in High Schools by kids w/ purple hair now...no names...)
...When & Where I came from - Punk seemed like much more of a reaction against endless years of Disco than any Prog Noodling - but I know that in der Cities - it was a completely different story !!...
  10:52pm JakeGould:

To me prog rock is like soda or beef jerky: I get urges for them every now and then, I have some, I like it, then I feel sick for a few days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm pacific standard simon:

I could listen to a 3-hour prog show, but not a half-hour Yes show.
Avatar 10:54pm Droll:

Okay -- Everyone go to your corner, alone, except Jake, who's going to be in the middle acting all popular without us while listening to 4/4 music in a major key.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm pacific standard simon:

Detecting an attempt by the music to change the subject of the comments...
  10:58pm JakeGould:

@Droll On a major Cramps trip this weekend. So back off.
  10:59pm Carmichael:

I am a huge prog fan, and I tend to come at my love like the bebop fans did: i know what I like, and the rest are pretentious wallpaper doodlers. Granted, i have no empirical data, just one big attitude.
Avatar 11:00pm Droll:

Jake, Right, you pick the fight, I'll do the backing off. If you need me I'll be over there... alone... playing oud. by myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm pacific standard simon:

Don't beat yourself up over it.
Avatar 11:03pm Droll:

pss, Yeah, but he's listening to The Cramps. I don't wanna mess with any music played by someone called "Lux Interior".
Swag For Life Member 11:04pm 12539:

I'm way cooler than all of you, I'm listening to Dave Mandl on wfmu.
  11:05pm Carmichael:

Lux and Ivy lived on my street for awhile here in Sacramento. We would all meet at the record store on the K street mall, long gone now.
  11:07pm JakeGould:

@Droll Okay sorry. You’re cool. I respect you & your Oud.
  11:08pm JakeGould:

@Carmichael Damn. That mush have been cool. They are such record geeks. That’s their whole catalog basically. Great cover band with a few great original hits. But wish I saw them live in the 1980s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lux & Ivy
- Hippies !!:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

That looks like a picture of me circa '75!
  11:16pm JakeGould:

“Wszystko Co Stale Rozplywa Sie W. Powietrzu” = phoneytically, “Wishtisco Co Stahly Rozpleewah See W. Poweetrzoo” Dzien dobry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm pacific standard simon:

Get the drummer stunned.
  11:17pm P-90:

Wait, I thought it was the Sex Pistols who were "horrid noodlers." And more or less proud to be... The reacted against ALL the "AOL"-style "dinosaurs", not just the proggers by any means. But I didn't think there was ever any confusion about who could really play music and who were pretty much just "horrid noodlers." Sheesh.
  11:18pm JakeGould:

Polish alphabet pronunciation guide. Just saying. youtu.be/aJI6JDAxUd4
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm pacific standard simon:

You're thinking of "horrid wankers', mate.
Avatar 11:21pm Droll:

[handing P-90 a lute and directing him to an unoccupied corner] Play something in 13/8, please.
  11:22pm P-90:

pss: Horrid wankers, and horrid noodlers. That was the essence of their act, right?
  11:22pm JakeGould:

I meant: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm pacific standard simon:

"horrid noodlers", I think refers to people who can really play music, but get so stoned that they forget how.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

Ah. I'm forgetting how to write English.
  11:28pm P-90:

@ Droll: What am I supposed to plug this thing into?
Avatar 11:28pm Droll:

"Horrid Noodlers" makes me think of soloists like Kenny G and Frank Zappa -- they play for 7-13 minutes but only about 20-30 seconds of it is good stuff.
Swag For Life Member 11:30pm 12539:

Shouldn't P-90 be using a double-necked lute?
  11:30pm P-90:

The very FIRST time in the history of life on Earth that Zappa and Kenny G were musically categorized together! We're witnesses to a (very) small milestone here
  11:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  11:32pm P-90:

[looking for the pickup selector switch and master volume control on the damn lute]
  11:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there's 20 sec.s of good KennyG??...
  11:32pm Carmichael:

If P90 knew Rick Nielsen, it would be a 5 neck lute.
Avatar 11:33pm Droll:

P-90, Small milestone doesn't even begin to overestimate the importance of that remark.
And I'm awfully sorry about the Lute, it's got a low-output humbucker, but I know you like the single-coils. It also needs to be recapped. I recommend dimeing all the knobs for best tone.
  11:33pm JakeGould:

Folks, I am sorry. I am genuinely sorry about my prig rock hate tonight. If there is ever a real-world meet up of the WFMU commentors here, I will personally buy each of you a small a small decent appetizer and/or drink of your choice. And if you want to judge me, I will bring along my iPhone so you can see what I carry in my pocket all day & laugh at me. My Jim Croce. My Steely Dan. My Billy Joel.
  11:35pm JakeGould:

I meant PROG ROCK HATE! Arrrgggggh!!!! I’m buying a lot of fries & beer it seems.
Swag For Life Member 11:36pm 12539:

Jake, that's okay by me as long as you also have the wfmu app.
  11:36pm P-90:

@Carmichael: Yeah, well sometimes the alternate tunings and the fretless neck and the slide neck and the 10-string come in handy
  11:37pm JakeGould:

@12539 I have that app. Right next to my MoMA, Guggenheim, Poetry Foundation & Bushwick Open Studios apps. Also, ZooBorns.
Avatar 11:39pm Droll:

Jake, I don't want to make fun of your favorite music, but I will chew my appetizer with my mouth open as a childish retaliation.
  11:39pm P-90:

JakeG: Wait: stick with "Prig Rock", I thought you were coining something new there. Maybe you want to hang on to that one and work with it.
[strumming quizzically] Is this thing in DADGAD or what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

I remember when the Bainbridge Public Library only had about a dozen CDs, and one of them was Bobby Previte.
  11:40pm JakeGould:

@Droll Can you also make “Ahhhh…” and “Mmmmm…” noises when you eat? Sure sign of high function.
Swag For Life Member 11:41pm 12539:

Jake, does the Bushwick Open Studios app do anything outside of the Open Studio week?
  11:42pm JakeGould:

@PSS Here in Brooklyn one of my favorite things to do is to go to the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library & see which local musician/actor dropped off a pile of CDs or DVDs. So many Dan Zanes CDs and copies of Stanley Tucci’s “Big Night.”
  11:42pm Carmichael:

No worries, Jake. Everyone is frustrated at why the crappy music sells, and the good music gets buried. We just haven't come to terms on which is which. I have teenagers, so I feel I'm coming closer to the eternal truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

"Prig Rock" would be, like, Up With People, and The New Christy Minstrels, and The Kingston Trio -- right?
  11:43pm JakeGould:

@12539: Nope. The Bushwick Open Studios app does not much. Does keep a nice record of artists studios, but as a developer in the art world I am impressed by how well it works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

@JakeGould - Yeah, that one "out" guitar player lives here -- can't remember his name -- he probably donated the CDs.
  11:46pm P-90:

[Giggling for the fifth time at "Dan Zanes and Big Night"...]
  11:47pm JakeGould:

@PSS My other favorite thing is to go to this one thrift store in Brooklyn Heights (really richie rich neighborhood) & see what stack of CDs some local rich spinster with delusions of cabaret dropped off a pile of CDs they probably only sold a few times on some bad website or at a local community fundraiser.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Santos L Halper:

Mmm, prog appetizers...octopus with lark's tongues on a bed of giant hogweed. Yum.
  11:48pm JakeGould:

@Santos No. Just normal food. I’ll buy tacos. In fact getting tacos is the best option because there are tons of taco places that love them that early 1970s rock… Including “Yes.”
Avatar 11:48pm Droll:

I wish crappy music sold! Nothing sells anymore. The only ones making money from music anymore are the pirates (YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, etc.)

pss, Bill Frisell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

Bill Frisell! That's the one I was trying to remember.
  11:49pm P-90:

@ Santos: Not bad at all, look at you all lurking and shit
  11:52pm P-90:

@Droll: I'm hosting an informal WFMU listener meetup before the Yes show at Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday. You're welcome to join us on Skype...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

I would like to advocate that we all learn musical instruments and start playing together again, like our (great) grandparents did. NO MORE RECORDED MUSIC!!!

Oh, wait...
  11:54pm JakeGould:

If “Yes” is playing “Fragile” & “Close to the Edge” in their entirety, then I think we can all agree on something: Laser shows need to come back. Period.
Swag For Life Member 11:55pm 12539:

Dave, I'm throwing caution to the wind here and going over the 8 comment limit to thank you for another great show. So, Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Andrew Waterloo:

I must add that this was an excellent show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

If, by "laser shows", you mean the audience pointing lasers at each other until someone loses an eye... then I'm all in favor.
Avatar 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: That's fine with me, and thanks.
Avatar 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

@Andrew: Why, thank.
Avatar 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

That is, thanks.
Avatar 11:58pm Droll:

Squire, Howe, White, Downes, Davison playing Fragile? That's only 2/5 classic. Gotta have Bruford, Alan doesn't have the crisp snare... oh, wait, that show is in a few weeks.

Thanks, DM. Have a good week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm pacific standard simon:

Nevermind that comment about "no more recorded music". Fine show, Mr. Dave M, as always.
