Favoriting July 1, 2014: Happy Independence Day (Just Not Here)
July 4th has a very special meaning to me vis a vis my independence and my radio career. July 4, 1986 was my first-ever appearance on WFMU during an on-air barbecue thrown by Kaz. Luckily for me, that appearance was documented. Unluckily for me, I'm not very good. My Long Island accent is prominent. And I can't seem to figure out how to actually interact with the other "performers", who included Kaz, Jim Ryan and Tom Bergin (except for a scripted piece we did, written by yours truly). We mocked Liberty Weekend, the celebration of the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, and generally made asses of ourselves. But it was thrilling because I was out on my own, living an independent life. And I got the radio bug. Before long I was co-hosting The Nightmare Lounge with Kaz, then I was DJing overnights, then came Aerial View. And now I'm paid to do radio. I'll play some segments from that first appearance tonight while we discuss independence and what it means to you.

Ken From Hyde Park:

As kids, we'd turn in our gopher tails (5 cents per flickertail and 24 cents per pocket gopher) and spend the money on firecrackers. We'd blow up ant piles and pop empty tuna cans into the air.

Ken From Hyde Park:

At dusk, we'd drive into town to watch the fireworks show. Dad would buy a variety pack and we'd blow them up before going to bed. (Also, 25 cents for those gopher tails.)

we used to blow up our old models when we outgrew them. sometimes we'd pretend they were in an accident and pour some gasoline on them and light them to see them melt. today's kids don't know what they're missing.

my dad came home from that place in the carolinas called 'south of the border' with a bunch of sparklers when he went down to get a mouth full of new dentures. we were in heaven

Ken From Hyde Park:

Sportsy Talk clearly ran out of material last night. I'm sure it's tough for them to double the amount of things to talk about. Not that it wasn't entertaining, nonetheless.

Greg from Bloomfield:

There was a Super Bowl commercial this year that opened with the question "Is there anything more American...than America?" and I almost spit my beer out from laughing.

I remember the instructions for firecrackers: Light fuse; get away.

As much as America's tendency towards greed and violence frustrates me, I'd say our best qualities are our natural beauty and the fact that we are a cultural powerhouse without equal.

@Ken from Hyde Park: what bothered me about Sportstalk is not the lack of materialen (it was quite informative) but the double standards: one does not hurt other people by p-ing in one's own mouth so why penalize this while supporting a dirty tackle over a schwalbe?

culture with a battery pack!

flying d-man:

.. mouth. so why support a dirty tackle over someone avoiding one by lying down?

flying d-man:

I mean: why penalize the p-ing and hurraying a dirty tackle?

Marmalade Kitty:
