Hey Joe. I hear Horace Silver has shrugged off his mortal coil.

When humankind eventually dies out, the Yips will come back and populate the earth. It'll be boing, boing everywhere then.

Avatar 9:10am duke:

Horace Silver died? I was wondering why I heard "Song for My Father" this AM on a station that doesn't usually play jazz. RIP
Avatar 9:10am Marcel M:

A station that usually doesn't play jazz??!?!??!?!
Avatar 9:11am Brian in UK:

Steely Dan 'borrowed' the opening of Song of my Father for Rikki Don't Lose that Number.
Avatar 9:12am Brian in UK:

Joe is there room for a little marimba?
Avatar 9:13am duke:

@marcel I was in the car. Radio is a wasteland in the NY capital district

Hey Duke, dont say that, DJHeat (wcdb) might be around

Im digging these good viberations
Avatar 9:16am duke:

@KP WCDB is good, but their signal is about as strong as a 100 watt light bulb so I can't usually get them out in the hinterlands
Avatar 9:17am Brian in UK:

I think of 1960s East European cartoons when I hear vibes.
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

@Brian: Has anyone played any Horace Silver yet on FMU?
Avatar 9:20am Marcel M:

@Joe: Yeah last night.
Avatar 9:20am Brian in UK:

No idea Joe, just got in from work. I only heard on the way to work this AM.

Love the jazz butcher! Are they finally re released on cd? Last I checked the album was out of print, but I'd love to get my sis a copy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Andrew Waterloo:

The vibraphone album that really blows me away is the collab between Roy Ayers and Fela Kuti
Avatar 9:40am Jeff:

This must be another station zeitgeist thing - Tony B has been there in his storeroom office among the boxes of swag (re)discovering an appreciation for the vibes after spending some time playing and replaying a Modern Jazz Quartet album I pointed him to.
Avatar 9:40am Joe McG:

@Andrew: Wha? I didn't know about that one. What is it called? @erika: Yes, finally on CD! @Jeff: FMU zeitgeist!

I love me some Jazz Butcher - if more of their output has been re-released, I need to get on that.

On the subject of vibes, Bobby Hutcherson is incredible.

WOW, this is Sonny Sharrock and Last Exit?!?!?!
Avatar 9:45am KP:

Sharrock! Very very
Avatar 9:45am Jeff:

Oh, wait - this is an actual recent Butch release.

I also see that there's discussion of a possible Monochrome Set / Jazz Butcher tour. That has a certain logic.
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

@Cecile: I had "Dialogue" in my cart but didn't fit it in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Andrew Waterloo:

there is also a newer guy (new! ha, he's 50) from Pittsburgh who I heard on a mainstream jazz satellite station and it blew me away.
  9:52am P-90:

Since we're still commenting on vibes, the Red Norvo Trio is key; I was wondering if Joe would get to them in that set. (With Charles Mingus on bass, and guitarist's guitarist Tal Farlow)
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

@P-90: I did have Red Norvo in the cart, but with Benny Goodman. Probably should have extended that set!

Hi Joe and everyone!
Avatar 11:06am chinaski:

From WikiP:
In 1980, Mick Jagger wrote a song about Spider Sabich's death that was intended to be on the Rolling Stones' album Emotional Rescue. The song, titled "Claudine", carried lyrics that painted a graphic picture of some of the more salacious aspects of the affair and killing. However, it was deemed too controversial and was removed, although it was included on several bootleg Rolling Stones albums. In November 2011, the track "Claudine" was released on the Rolling Stones' deluxe reissue of their album Some Girls.

"blue collar" is a great, dark movie abt auto workers in Detroit, screenplay by paul schraeder I believe. Pryor has some funny bits, but it's a pretty bleak, angry movie. harvey keitel and yaphet kotto, whose character suffocates in a spray booth. sorry, painter awareness week.
