A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Soccer vs fashion: I'm not sad to see the striped shoulders look gone, but for the USA, can you say Garanimals?

Avatar 9:39am Van in DC:

Good morning, great day!
Avatar 9:41am George:

Hi Trouble, Hi all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Adrian in London:

Hi. I'm avoiding the World Cup BUT the US strip is absolutely lovely, probably because it reminds me of the French national champion's cycling jersey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am sugarwolf:

yay DJ Icepack!
Avatar 9:45am d¢ pät:

Let's talk soccer...4-0!
Avatar 9:45am d¢ pät:

also ugly win by team OOSA
Avatar 9:47am duke:

yes Jolie Holland. This is a different style for her. I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Parq:

The World Cup is a remarkable thing -- where else would the U.S. be the underdog against Ghana?
Avatar 9:49am d¢ pät:

yes and they should have lost the way they were playing.
Avatar 9:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Just about to slip away for mtg., but PEEPLE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Parq:

And where else could we, as we did last Sunday, repeatedly see the phrase "Argentina and Bosnia"?
Avatar 9:50am Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and yes. Burger King was not the better team yesterday. Lucky.
Avatar 9:52am d¢ pät:

they are going to have their hearts surgically removed and handed to them when they play the mighty Germans.
Avatar 9:54am Van in DC:

Any Jana Hunter or Sharon Van Etten queued up for today? If not, that's okay, I get to see them both tonight live. Really looking forward to it!
Avatar 9:58am d¢ pät:

it's hard boasting about the Germans without sounding...fascistic?
Avatar 9:58am Rev. Turnip Druid:

They will destroy the USA *AND* make the trains run on time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Adrian in London:

This song's marvellous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Parq:

The German soccer empire will last a thousand years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am robyn:

will be interesting to watch brazil today. their first game they seemed caught up in nerves.
Avatar 10:03am d¢ pät:

I know a bunch of Mexicans that hope they're still caught nervy..
Avatar 10:04am d¢ pät:

minus *caught...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am robyn:

i'm sure! who do you think is the best team right now? hard to imagine we saw the best argentina and spain have to offer. germany looked the strongest but they only played against 10 guys for half the match...altho they were up 2-0 at least before that
Avatar 10:16am d¢ pät:

Germans, yes. But watching Netherlands and of course Brazil.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Adrian in London:

*whispers* It's pronounced "L"eye"ver"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Adrian in London:

Uh, at least if they're from Liverpool it is…? I'll go back to me ironing now…
Avatar 10:19am d¢ pät:

Belgians have a deep team too--we'll see how they do today.

Leyeverbirds? Really? So then is it Leyeverpool?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Adrian in London:

There was a 70s sitcom called The Liver Birds about two women form Merseyside and that was definitely pronounced "lie". So who knows?
Avatar 10:25am d¢ pät:

little research--might come from the piece of laver (seaweed) in the birds mouth? good to know.
  10:25am marmalade kitty:

@DCP I thought your boy Stirling had scored for England inside a minute of the Italy game! more to come from him hopefully!
  10:27am marmalade kitty:

Goaaaaaal! no! side netting :p
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am robyn:

there should be statues of stephin merritt in town squares across the country.
Avatar 10:30am bobdoesthings:

was that the guy from magnetic fields?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am robyn:

Avatar 10:31am bobdoesthings:

ah.. thought I knew that voice
Avatar 10:32am Van in DC:

Regarding the World Cup, congrats to our US side. You take a win in this event any way you can get it. It was just our 8th win ever in the tournament.
Avatar 10:37am George:

Avatar 10:39am d¢ pät:

@mk -- yeah, I thought it was in too. he looks better all the time.
Wait...8th win ever? Didn't US come in 3rd place for the first WC?
Avatar 10:39am bobdoesthings:

ahh I need this! clothilde is awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am coelacanth:

bonjour Trouble and Trouble seekers.
Beautiful art today.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Greg from Bloomfield:

Clothilde > everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am common:

yay, big star!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am braveness23:

B23 Star here!
Avatar 10:43am Van in DC:

I took the 8 wins stat from a sports station DJ's blog.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am SeanG:

Avatar 10:47am d¢ pät:

hmmm. Not sure that's right. US only needed to win 2 matches to come in 3rd place in 1930? Actually maybe it is, there were only 13 teams in the first WC. huh!
  10:52am Robert:

Believe it or not, the recent TV serial "Lost" was based in part on "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil".
Avatar 10:52am duke:

I would think Rhode Island Blues would be one of Trouble's favorite Fay Weldon books.
Avatar 10:52am Van in DC:

Avatar 10:53am d¢ pät:

I gotta tell ya, I was lost in Rhode Island once and stopped at a fire station to ask for directions. I couldn't understand one thing that guy said.
  10:55am Robert:

"Lost" contained various clues to its She-Devil cx in the form of references to hunter vs. fisher, and a character with a couple of moles on her face. It's all part of the theme in the hidden plot of "Lost" of persons imitating & usurping other persons' identities, as per "She-Devil", "Seconds", and Flitcraft. There were clues all over the place.
Avatar 10:56am duke:

When I started working in RI, I was told that if you are driving for more than 45 minutes in RI, you're lost.
  10:57am Robert:

It also helped that David Lindelof (the father of "Lost" co-creator Damon) sat us down one night and showed us the entirety of the TV serial adaptation of Weldon's novel, plus the Roseanne Barr movie.
  11:07am Peter:

Morning from the Left Coast. Packing and moving the art building after ten years of making and collecting stuff!
Chucho Maria Jose! A lotta stuff!
Avatar 11:09am d¢ pät:

Avatar 11:09am Van in DC:

So, apparently it's National Pollinator Week. Birds are being celebrated today, in fact.

The Smithsonian Natural History museum also has a big pollinator thingy going on.
  11:09am Robert:

"Lost" even had its character corresponding to Fisher live in a big foot at the edge of the sea, and it was implied that the foot had once been part of a high tower.
Avatar 11:26am Van in DC:

Thank you Trouble, I have to run, work calls. If I get to talk with Sharon tonight at 9:30 Club here I'll be sure to tell her hi from you.
Avatar 11:28am Whosondephone:

That bug sounded like a fart to me.
  11:28am Yogi Bear:

Red Sox suck
Avatar 11:29am d¢ pät:

who's Icepack rooting for in WC?
Avatar 11:30am duke:

Welcome DJ Icepack

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am jamesie:

Avatar 11:49am bobdoesthings:

Avatar 11:51am Trouble:

  11:51am sugarwolf:

There's a live performance of this on YouTube that's so good.
Avatar 11:52am βrian:

Why, it's a 17.78 cm vinyl.
  11:57am sugarwolf:

Ha ha, it's a phase that's lasted a decade and a half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm robyn:
