Hi Julie!
Listening to "In the Dark" once a week, I just get more & more impressed by what a great job they did on that track, it's a real classic. You've seen them play (I assume)?

Helping WFMU rope in the youngins eh? I was in a pub with a pal comparing the WFMU website to (as an example) Radio Helsinki. WFMU's looks totally retro, which is fine for the old-timers I'm sure. But the left-side navigation is a bit of a mess (IMHO) and the color schemes tend to be eyesores. OTOH Radio Helsinki is trying so hard to be trendy, it is a design disaster, too much crap, but it probably seems "homier" and more natural to ADHD youngins. RH has a chatboard to talk to the DJ but listeners aren't using it as a chatspace and might get banned for that (?) and the playlists come online only AFTER the shows, so WFMU has'em beat in basic tech thanks to the KenzoTronic 3000.

@fredVH
Trying to stay up to date with websites during the recent 8 years or so could be an incredible waste of money! And most of the techniques in feshion around some 2007 to 2009 ... since the dawn of mobile browsers you can completely thow to them to trashcan.

Quite a few Flash-, JQuery- heavy "barrier-free" Sites need/had an complete relaunch from the very scratch now.

@guido agreed, one of the few gems from him I think
  3:44am
P-90:

@ fred: Is Radio Helsinki's site professional but cluttered-looking, like BBC 3's fer instance? And yeah, playlists updated in (more or less) real time is another example of American leadership, the rest of the world will catch up in due time. Finland's media sounds a bit archaic, like an Iron Curtain county's: banned for using the chatboard to chat, whazzup with that? This is government-run radio, right? Do they also have "privately owned" stations?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am
Guido from Cologne:

there quite a few gems from him actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am

@FVH: Journiac did a performance in the 60's involving blood sausages made from his own blood. Actionist body art type, definitely artsy and maybe fartsy enough
  3:46am

@ fred: lemme guess, the critics who came to review the performance were the ones who were served the sausages?

  3:53am
P-90:

George's early Beatles stuff was mostly gems, John and Paul wouldn't have allowed anything but his very best stuff on the records.
@ fred von: that was a somewhat frivolous and facetious post, but by all means unpack! ...Sorry I said that BBC 3's site was "cluttered-looking", I apologize if that was a stereotype...
  3:54am
marmalade kitty:

I bought the bouzouki when i was in Athens :)
Avatar 3:56am
fred von helsing:

@P90 Oh BBC is cluttered. Anyways Finland is like Canada, there tend to be both public and private entities. Radio and TV are both like that here. Radio Helsinki was a small private operation that almost went under but got rescued late last year. The DJs have LOTS of freedom but also RH has advertising. People are encouraging me to apply for a show and I've spoken to a guy and I might go visit them and check out (for example) their supply of n00 toonz.
Avatar 3:58am
fred von helsing:

RH's chatboard is too squeezed for a free-for-all like WFMU but I think I'd encourage ppl to try it anyways. I'd have to ask about station policy. Does anyone know any sites that host playlist+chatboards ? Or maybe I could talk Kenzo out of an evaluation copy :-D I've submitted coder-type feedback to him, he knows I'm a dork

@guido Cool. RH is commercial but shoestring so a month or two of free eval might be needed to get ppl hooked on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08am

The Troubadour didn't "go down" until the 1990's. It was hot in the 60's (Lenny Bruce got arrested for using the "obscene" word "schmuck" there), hot in the 70's (John Lennon and Harry Nilsson got so fucked up they got thrown out of there), and in the eighties, just as it seemed to have run it's course, it became the showplace for Metal Bands, there were dozens and dozens of them with record deals after Quiet Riot sold a bazilion albums and G&R appeared. Saw Van Halen there when they were a local LA band, in the middle of a bill with 3 or four other local bands...
