hey there Maester Tony

Hola, Michael!

Here we go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Dr. Coulter is in the operating theatre. Please take all messages!
Avatar 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, PS Simon & Doug As Master!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm pacific standard simon:

Hope that wasn't a typo for "ass master"!
Avatar 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

I think that is what Doug's vanity license plate says.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh, but I am a man of many talents, pacific standard simon.
Avatar 12:10pm V Priceless:

Hi Tony and crowd! King Crimson shows announced for September!
Avatar 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, V Priceless!

King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicates -- and King Crimson returns from exile. Coincidence ... or not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Carmichael:

Tony, you're rockin' the 70s today!
  12:16pm ?uestion Mark:

Hi Tony and gang! Psyched to be tuning in live today!
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Carmichael and ?uestion Mark!!
Avatar 12:18pm V Priceless:

@ Tony - very interesting observation, there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm pacific standard simon:

"NME journalist Nick Kent was almost fooled into believing that the acetate of England's Glory demos was in fact a bootleg of Velvet Underground outtakes". HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Doug Schulkind:

In 1981, I was prevented from going into a men's room in some hotel in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada because King Juan Carlos was using it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm pacific standard simon:

Been a sore spot between you ever since?
Avatar 12:23pm V Priceless:

Woo! Great Cale track!
Avatar 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

@ Doug: From now on, he'll have to stand in line like everyone else.
Avatar 12:26pm V Priceless:

Cale is such a superb song-writer, IMO.
Avatar 12:28pm still b/p:

Still an air of majesty in there after it was graced by royaltee-tee?
I ain't down with monarchy, hereditary or otherwise, and the loopy associated privilege & protocols. I don't speak until you speak? Don't eat until you eat? Get the F outa here!
Avatar 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

@ V Priceless: Agreed. Arranger too.
Avatar 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, still b/p, you rabble rouser!
Avatar 12:32pm Finbar:

Give him the axe!
Avatar 12:33pm βrian:

I had Cyril pegged as Erik Satie.
  12:33pm Dean:

I missed it, but thanks for the BJH. Love 'em.
Avatar 12:34pm still b/p:

Rabble, rabble, you've torn your dress...
  12:35pm Dean:

Hmmm, Stackridge is now on rotation at WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm pacific standard simon:

@βrian - me too -- not familiar with his name or work, but I'm reading up on it in another browser tab. Apparently, Scott and Satie both had strong mystical tendencies.
Avatar 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho haloo, Finbar, βrian, and Dean!
Avatar 12:37pm Finbar:

Cyril Scott with Dennis Henning on piano from 1905 was awesome.
Avatar 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Yes, "Lotus Land" is very Satie-ish, innit?
Avatar 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

... and this Stackridge track sounds like Genesis in spots....
Avatar 12:40pm V Priceless:

Another great tune from Roxy!
Avatar 12:41pm Finbar:

Beach Boys do a great version of Louie Louie as well. 66 what a year!
Avatar 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Just picked up a Rhino comp with nothing but covers of Louie Louie -- haven't heard it yet, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Carmichael:

Tony, next you should get the Stairways to Heaven comp that SCTV was advertising a few decades back. Slim Whitman, Rickie Lee Jones, Boxcar Wille, Buffy Sainte Marie, Al Stewart, Ferrante & Teicher ....
  12:56pm Santos L Halper:

Sorry to miss the first set, but loving this one Tony! Will have to investigate Stackridge; is that LP a good starting point?
Avatar 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Santos! All the Stackridge albums are good, imo -- except maybe the last (which I haven't heard). Man in the Bowler Hat / Pinafore Days may be the easiest to find, though.
Avatar 1:08pm V Priceless:

The Jeweller! Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

I heard the Stackridge floodgate opening wider!
Avatar 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Uncle M!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm steve:

heya Tony and friends
Avatar 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy there, Steve!
Avatar 1:21pm V Priceless:

Love me some Damned!!
Avatar 1:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

hey folks.
WAAAAH, good grief, what a devastatin' trio I've missed there (Roxy Music / Quintessence / T.Wishart)
Avatar 1:27pm northguineahills:

Really dug that Trevor Wishart earlier.
Avatar 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

Heya ho hola hoo, Turnip & NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Rich in Washington:

hell O Tony!
Avatar 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Rich! You made it!
Avatar 1:31pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Haven't heard much Quintessence apart from their bit in the glastonbury fayre video with Arthur Brown & Fairport, etc. I mostly know of (quintessence's) Raja Ram's efforts in the psytrance scene. He's one advanced being, that dude.
Avatar 1:34pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Carmichael:

Tony, I am cruising up to your neck of the woods this weekend. My girls need to go to college, and I have all this extra cash laying around ...

Visiting Washington, too!
  1:39pm ans:

o, curtis......like a friend of mine once said: curtis is like oil to the soul.......
  1:40pm Dean:

I'm heading to PDX, too, on Father's Day, but unlike years in the past, when I'd hang out at the late July Brewers' Festival, this'll be a trip in at night, then out the next morning for Eugene to attend a nephew's graduation. Love Portland. Wish I could spend more time there.

Last time I heard Carmen ... 1980, maybe?
Avatar 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: I can kind provide Portland record store tips if you want to put that cash to socially productive use.
Avatar 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, ans!
  1:41pm Dean:

Music Millennium, 2nd Avenue Records ...
Avatar 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

Actually, I'd most highly recommend Little Axe (vinyl only), Crossroads and Exiled.
Avatar 1:44pm V Priceless:

wow - Carmen - saw them play this album in support of Tull circa "Warchild"! They had an amplified dance surface to Flamenco on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm steve:

wow, this took an unexpected turn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Rich in Washington:

There just isn't enough pirate-themed rock music.
Avatar 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Ahhh -- you poked out my eye!
  1:49pm Dean:

Records stores duly noted! Little Axe appears to share the folk/gospel/blues/field recording vibe of El Cerrito's Down Home, which I've mentioned before.
Avatar 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: It's got that, for sure -- but also plenty of prog, psych, post-punk and experimental sounds too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

Little Axe is amazing. I kick myself for failing to ever go there until fairly recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

@Carmichael: What parts of Washington are you visiting?
  1:53pm Dean:

So, then, the conundrum: Do I head to PDX for brew festival, blow a wad on brew and vinyl? Or put food on my kids' table and visit my 87 year old mother in Southern California? I'm thinking ...
Avatar 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Just in case Jon Anderson's voice isn't high enough for you -- here's the Danielson Famile....
  1:54pm Dean:

Ivan Rebroff!
Avatar 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Buy lots of records -- but remember to play 'em for your kids and 87-year-old mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

Did we just hear something from the new Steve Wilson Yes reissue?
Avatar 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle M: Nope -- was from an old reissue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

Vintage reissues are the best.
Avatar 1:59pm still b/p:

Had some exposure here, but wasn't aware of Throbbing Gristle back then. This sounds like something composed 48 hours after they heard Autobahn.
Avatar 2:02pm V Priceless:

always dug this Cars track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Rich in Washington:

Like a lot of bands of that era, their success on the radio in terms of hit songs sort of overshadowed their overall album output. I also remember Ric Ocasek's solo album Beatitude being pretty cool, rather edgy.
Avatar 2:07pm V Priceless:

Tony - this is a show for the ages ya got going here!
Avatar 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, V!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Carmichael:

Rich, I'll be in Westport, but traveling around Aberdeen and Elma.

Tony, I just may take you up on that. Good music is more important than a good education. But good beer is more importatn than BOTH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Rich in Washington:

Aberdeen, Aberdeen,
Gloomiest town I've ever seen.
Avatar 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

I've driven by it. Last time, there seem to be a lot of heather about. Which came first, I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Rich in Washington:

Aberdeen reminds me of the sad little cow town I grew up in with X10 the angst and rural ennui. While I was never the hugest Cobain/Nirvana fan and don't generally buy into the post-mortem hype, having visited Aberdeen, I feel like I understand him more, where he was coming from - corny as that may sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Carmichael:

A doobie always makes me understand.
Avatar 2:18pm still b/p:

If you had your Doobie Druthers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 2:22pm northguineahills:

w00t, it's boppin' Babbitt!
Avatar 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

You cwazee Babbitt!
Avatar 2:27pm Brian in UK:

'ello Tony & co.
All this talk of Stackridge never thought I would here it again.

Mentioned this before but hey, I saw Yes just after Yes Album came out. Jon Hendricks joined them for a number (song not joint) and scat sang with Jon Anderson. It was a surprise but very good. They were bolder before the album covers artwork took over!
  2:27pm Dean:

Confluence of Babbitt and DS's promo about the opera show brings to mind Charles Dodge's Any Resemblance Is Purely Coincidental: http://www.allmusic.com/album/dodge-any-resemblance-is-purely-coincidental-mw0000879644 It features Caruso. Boy, oh, boy, does it feature Caruso!
Avatar 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

I love that Dodge piece -- my favorite of his, I think.

Greets, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm maestroso:

What an odd and wonderful sound from Monochrome Set.
  2:40pm Dean:

Pursuing the pirate theme...
Avatar 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, maestroso!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Doug Schulkind:

I am very much enjoying this particular musical selection. Thank you, Mr. Coulter.
Avatar 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

It was dedicated to you, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Doug Schulkind:

I don't know why, but that Moebius always makes me want to strip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

perpetually strip, you mean, Doug?
Where will it all end?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm MC Escher:

I'm sorry, but Doug is out walking the staircases and can't come to the comments.
  2:56pm Dean:

God's trip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

Escher designed my house and every time I go home, I get lost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the music dear radio host.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Rich in Washington:

thanks, Tony!
Avatar 2:58pm Jeremy N:

Hi and Bye, thanks for the swell listen!
Avatar 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for turnip-ing up, each and every body!! See you next week.
  2:59pm Dean:

I asked Escher to sign one of his lithographs on both sides. He only had time for one signature, so he did.
  9:22am listener james from westwood:

Wow, I'm not even to the first mic break in the archive and this is already a joy to listen to. Glad I saved this show for some Sunday copy editing!
