The program formerly known as Seven Second Delay, and The Happiness Hut. Ken and Andy, also known as The Enema Boys, further lower WFMU's already abysmal standards on a weekly basis. Stunt radio which subjects the radio audience to concepts and topics which mature adults should not have to endure. Find the fatal flaw. (Visit homepage.)

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Carmichael:

OK, I'm kinda sorta half interested.
Avatar 6:01pm Danne D:

Love the Comments Board Can't Believe I got Through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Fear of failure settling in.
Avatar 6:01pm Danne D:

This SHOULD be in my wheelhouse of topics - I used to race calculators in my youth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Carmichael:

Is Shazam an elephant? Or that midget that danced to Clam Caravan on the live Spinal Tap dvd?
Avatar 6:04pm steve:

this show is already a success, if the past 2 minutes are the best part
Avatar 6:04pm Joey the Sleaze:

Ken! Aaaaaandy! I'm trying to get a disc golf course built on Jacob Riis Park -- can you advertise my facebook page? I dont need money, i just need the attention of your listeners! www.facebook.com...
Avatar 6:04pm Danne D:

Very appropriate to have a Shazam theme the week after Jim Nabors sang at his last Indy 500.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm PMD:

I know why the Cajun bird sings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm -max-:

Info from the newsletter:

"Can You Identify a Song Faster Than Shazam Can?

Tonight, it's yet another installment of our never-ending series, Andy Breckman Discovers the Internet. This eveing it is episode 421: John Henry versus the Shazam Engine.

Or as Andy prefers to refer to it, ShazamaramaBingBangaRooaRama.

Ken and Andy will take one caller at a time to see if they can identify a song faster than the song recognition app Shazam. To keep it fair, we wont be choosing super obscure songs. In fact, we will let you choose the overall musical genre you know best. For every listener who beats Shazam, Andy will give $20 to his favorite charity which, these days, is Mothers Against Masturbatoriums, but that could change."
  6:07pm Kathy:

like Sammy Davis Jr says in MacArthur Park....
"a stripe-ed pair of pants"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Michele should chime on on the pronunciation. She says kit-ten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Carmichael:

So far, this show is an elephant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm PMD:

There really could be a great T-shirt with an image of Dead Air Gulch
  6:10pm herb.nyc:

Why the caged bird sings? To get to the other side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm dale:

very nice painting of the two in the email blast (is that still a term?) i assume it was chris t's significant other who painted it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Carmichael:

Now I'm pissed off at the old armory. I say we go kick their asses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Marcel M:

Is the 7 second delay going to ruin this again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Carmichael:

Speaking of cool music apps, try TouchTunes. Most of the juke boxes in your town use the service, and you can control them via the app. There's nothing better than sitting around playing with your cell phone while people feed money into the juke. You can jump their selection and play something off the wall. Watch 'em go crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Egregious technical errors - 1

Avatar 6:21pm Danne D:

Hard to hear but to be fair Depeche Mode not my wheelhouse :)

Hunting High and Low woulda been tough but fair (and I woulda lost that one too probably)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Marcel M:

Well done anyway Danne
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Carmichael:

Nice try, Danne. You know the game's rigged, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Marcel M:

I'm breaking my volunteering cherry this weekend.
Avatar 6:22pm northguineahills:

2/3rds of the time I use Shazam, it gets no result. When it does get a result, it takes a good 20 seconds at least. (of course, I usually use it when WFMU djs are are taking their sweet ass time on updating the playlist).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Carmichael:

I'll take Gay Bar Music for $500, Alex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Greg from Bloomfield:

I have found that Jonesy has the only Shazammable show on FMU. Anything else and you're pretty much out of luck...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Marcel M:

I use it at the same moments Northguinea, and it also doesn't work often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Carmichael:

I use SoundHound for all my ID'ing needs. It's just a different flavor of vanilla, I guess.
  6:25pm P-90:

@ Danne: Wait, Whaaaat?
Has Jim Nabors been banned from singing at any more Indy 500s?
Avatar 6:26pm Danne D:

@Carmichael lol - if Andy were buying the free records then I would think it wasn't probably rigged ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Foolbert:

Any word with the suffix '-ed' can be pronounced using '-èd' in order to maintain the metre of a poem or of a line of dialogue, especially if it were written long ago enough that this was the way it were pronounced, as well as in order to be pretentious. The pronunciation 'wingèd', beside being familiar to us from the show, might also be relatively common from a proper recitation of Marvell's 'To His Coy Mistress', which has the well-known couplet
'But at my back I always hear
Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near'.

More usually, though, if you're not trying to be a jerk or to make a point, it isn't pronounced as 'cagèd', and Maya Angelou didn't pronounce it that way.

Oh, and

I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore,
When he beats his bars and would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings –
I know why the caged bird sings.
---Paul Laurence Dunbar
Avatar 6:28pm Danne D:

@Marcel that's great :) enjoy volunteering hope to see you there

@P-90 Jim Nabors his retiring from the gig - he's had some health issues in recent years.

(as yet I am not volunteering, but I may offer to if there still is a need and I think I can swing it). Would be volunteers should check in with Scott@wfmu.org as I do think they still need folks!
Avatar 6:29pm Danne D:

I know why the google-ed search sings
  6:30pm Allison T.:

KEN IS WRONG.

There is at least one instance in which the pronunciation of "caged" should be "cage-ed"! In THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, there is a speech made by a Lord in which he says: "And twenty caged nightingales do sing..." In order to have the proper iambic pentameter scansion, you need to pronounce it "cage-ED". Go ahead and give it a whirl.

(Also, I'm a female record collector... see y'all at the record fair!)
Avatar 6:30pm Danne D:

Pro-tip: If Andy suggests you are on his side, you should quickly clarify that you are on Ken's side. Not being on Ken's side usually gets you hung up on :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm asb:

Soundhound's supposed to recognize singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Marcel M:

This doesn't work... and live music doesn't/shouldn't either.
Avatar 6:31pm Danne D:

They should Shazam "Railroad Bill"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Nick the Bard:

I'm going to start playing Abadox or Xevious if people don't start calling in
Avatar 6:32pm Danne D:

How about Abadox/Xevious mashup?

I count that as a win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Carmichael:

I'm going to start playing Solitaire if no one calls in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Marcel M:

Lol carmichael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Nick the Bard:

i don't think anyone's bothered to rom hack abadoz or xevious together yet, boring ass super mario bros ones exist though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Carmichael:

Ed's an ass kisser.
  6:37pm Robert:

What the heck kind of algorithm could this thing be using?
  6:37pm P-90:

Bet there's a band out there named "No Match Found", or there should be
  6:40pm Robert:

Is it called "Cutting In & Out"?
Avatar 6:41pm Danne D:

They really should play John Henry by Johnny Cash as one of the picks.
  6:43pm mink:

do suzanne vega doo doo do do doo doo do do
Avatar 6:44pm Danne D:

Is Jandek on Shazam?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm amanda c:

i'm so psyched i won a free record, but i wasn't exactly planning on going to the record fair. if i'm allowed to pass along my free record to another listener i'll do it : )
  6:44pm P-90:

@ Danne: Haha! I was thinking "John Henry" too
  6:44pm Robert:

Can it handle records played at the wrong speed? How about backwards?
Avatar 6:44pm northguineahills:

Field Recordings? That would be nice.
Avatar 6:45pm Danne D:

Congrats Amanda :)
Avatar 6:45pm Danne D:

I gotta head out :)
Have a great night everyone!
Be nice to Nick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm amanda c:

thanks danne! i was nice to nick- meaning, i kept it short and didn't noticeably piss him off.
  6:47pm conrad:

Ken: Paisley Underground/Paisley Park are two different things. LA psych revivalists/Prince's label. Tho as the caller pointed out, there was a crossover: Prince writing a song for the Bangles.
  6:48pm P-90:

Wesley Snipes
Avatar 6:49pm Chris M.:

i'm definitely watching True Identity... but the torrent is so slow it might take a few days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Lizardner Dave:

All you need to know about True Identity. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Nick the Bard:

  6:52pm herb.nyc:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Marcel M:
