Favoriting May 20, 2014: The "T" Stands For "Tourist Trap"
I work in Manhattan, on the western edge of Rockefeller Center, a block from 30 Rock, Radio City Music Hall, Prometheus, etc. Which means I see LOTS of tourists when I'm on the street. Except for the Christmas season, when the sheer number of visitors to "the tree" slows everything down to a crawl, I'm not one of those carping about tourists. We're all tourists, eventually. I've even been known to help an out-of-towner out. But I've never attempted to "trap" any of them until I bought a new recorder and tested it by talking with tourists yesterday afternoon and this morning. I was inspired by a weekend trip to Lake George, where my wife and I were the tourists. Among others you will hear: a German couple who love the Brooklyn Bridge; folks from Southern California, on their way to snag Fallon tickets and a lovely high-born Indian woman, in town to see her daughter. I'd also love to hear from you about the last time you were a tourist and especially about a tourist trap away from which you'd like to steer fellow listeners. And if YOU'D like to steer clear of the tourists, I suggest availing yourself of the Rock Center Concourse whenever possible.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I must ditch soon for daughter's concert. Will listen via 90.1 on the way. When I'm in another town, I like to visit the local zoo, if there is one.

Mike East:

I was just a tourist in New Orleans...a good town to be a tourist in because everybody is, for the most part, really kind. Touristy things we did: ride the street car, drink a hurricane in the middle of the day, eat as many signature NOLA food items as possible.

that h6 zoom you got looks like a terrorist detonation device!

NYC seems like a terrible place to be a horse...I see them everyday and I feel kinda bad for them. I don't even like dealing with the traffic, and I'm a human.

I'd've been tempted to give them a penny for Lincoln. But i wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in Manh. there's a reduced scale mock-up of the Lincoln Memorial or some other Lincoln statue.

@dale - I used to carry around an H4 and people thought it was a taser

went to a golf course in atlanta on a vendor and the big draw was the frozen snickers bar and vodka and tonic after the 9th hole.

I miss the horses on Pelham Pkwy. since the lst time the stable on Stillwell Ave. closed. I think Pelham Bit is still open to the east, however.

Robert:

Our dog Lucky liked eating the duties on the bridle path on Pelham Pkwy. Talk about bad breath in dogs, huh?

Robert:

Of course, he's German, so he times every minute of those vacation days.

this recorder sounds much better than your old recorder. the flea markets and the girls in the diner sounded very muffled compared to this.
  6:27pm
Chris T.:

Thanks, Dale. I did much research before buying the Zoom H6. I can't wait to try it with a handheld mic like my Beyer M58.

Tommy:

Chris , if you go to Germany avoid the Black forest ..boring. We have better forest here. Do the Rhine cruise and go to Rothenburg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Mike East:

@dale - yeah, I think all the animals in westworld were robots...there was a robot snake, too, right?

Hi folks :)

Not sure if it's a tourist trap, per se, but the Washington Monument is a big hot rock basically. Woulda been more irked if I waited a long time.

I think a classic tourist trap is Universal Studios Hollywood. I found it interesting for other reasons though as I met people from like 8 different countries. Almost nobody was from the US. It was actually kinda fun.

The tourist trapization of the World Trade Center really angers me though - the fucking ghouls who walk up to you selling books shoving pictures of the Towers in your face or selling whatever number of other trinkets. They are some of the worst.

Danne D:

The one things about tourists that irks me is that they love to stick their arm out and point without any consideration of others around them.
  6:35pm
Joey X:

Chris, I think you need to set up the three card monte table and let the tourists come to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
dale:

i dunno mike. i saw an x-rated take off called sexworld - pretty sure there was a robotic snake in that.
