Avatar 9:12am duke:

@Jack I second that
Avatar 9:12am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe from sunny UK.
Some sad news, the demise two days ago of Malik Bendjelloul director of Searching for Sugarman by his own hand is very sad after all the effort to compile the film. FMU certainly supported Sixto Rodriguez's return on the airwaves and rightly so. Here is an obituary.

Avatar 9:12am Deacon Dave:

Howdy Joe
Avatar 9:13am Brian in UK:

Second Jack's comment, was he Dollar Brand when this was recorded?
Avatar 9:14am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yes, I saw that, quite sad. Yes, he was Dollar Brand then. The reissue has his reborn name on it, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Guido from Cologne:

Man Forever is an exploratory percussion project helmed by John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions), one of New York’s most versitile and critically lauded collaborators and a founding member of Oneida.

“The Clear Realization” is an exploration in polyrhythm performed on two drums sets, two sets of bongos (an instrument Colpitts rediscovered while performing with Yo La Tengo on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), a concert bass drum, snares, crash cymbals, and vocals. Each instrument is performing in a different time signature at the same tempo, creating a beat that is both propulsive and nonpredictive.

I went to see Abdullah with my sweetie who was a classically trained pianist. She was agog at his playing. What a fun concert. (Early 80s, I think.)
Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

@steve: Yeah, that's the B of his hit cover version of "Dead Man's Curve," which I've played before. Good one!
Avatar 10:55am Brian in UK:

@βrian jealous of the concert!! Got my own sweetie.
Avatar 10:55am popsicornia:

I'm hanging on every note today Joe, stacks o' thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Guido from Cologne:

Raymond Scott Quintett was considered "pseudo jazz" by the jazz people and he wasn't much loved by the musicians who worked under his command ... acording to what WFMU's own Irwin Chusid wrote in some liner notes.

Love the music of course.
Avatar 10:56am Brian in UK:

Oh Joe nearly forgot The Jesus of Cool was great last week, supported by John Doe. He just cranks out the songs nothing over three minutes.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

@popsicornia: Stacks o' thanks to you!
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

@Brian: Did he have a band or just solo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am DCE:

Mundo Earwood...a name I can't resist googling...
Avatar 11:01am Brian in UK:

Geetar and voice that's all. He came on stage waving like the Beatles at Shea Stadium, made me laugh. Evertones loves him. He is such a skinny little fella.

Trader Joe's has rice bran oil (I almost just typed "rice brain oil") which is tasty and has a high smoke point, great for jokers like me who keep burning other oils and setting off the goddamn smoke alarm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am DCE:

@ Carm, doncha just wish you had that kind of time again to just sit around and read liner notes?
