Thought for sure you'd be opening with "Love Theme from JAWS III"
Avatar 3:04pm doca:

Hello, Scott
Avatar 3:04pm Van in DC:

Hi Scott. I think Jim was calling for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Ooooh, Phantasm soundtrack.
Hi Scott and pals! MAY IS HERE!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm common:

Yo Scott! Everyone. Hee hee, greg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm common:

i looooooooove phantasm. one of the weirdest flicks ever!
Avatar 3:06pm Sean in Bristol UK:

is that the film with the metallic spheres that can give you a nasty headache?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Parq:

Per IMDB: "If you're looking for horror that's got balls...IT'S FOUND YOU."
Avatar 3:07pm Sean in Bristol UK:

sorry to be rude, hi Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Scott Williams:

Hey everyone! Genius bit from Phantasm, when the kid gets caught in the mausoleum, all he can do is shout: "Ummmmmmmm......" @Sean, yep. @Greg - ha! Was a close 2nd
Avatar 3:10pm Van in DC:

Phantasm was a truly scary movie for me back in the day. The Tall Man cometh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Andrew Waterloo:

I watched the first two Phantasm movies for the first time two Sundays ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm common:

good for you, andrew! i saw the first one when i was a kid and i was so scared and confused. saw the 2nd at a drive-in. good times.
  3:14pm GG Allin Thicke:

Afternoon all!
  3:15pm jayrope:

Excellent track by Guapo. Thank you, Scott William, from Berlin.
Avatar 3:16pm Sem Chumbo:

goodgoodgood.Hey, Scott, and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Andrew Waterloo:

I saw parts of them when I was a kid. This is the first time I sat down and really watched them. I've really been missing out.
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

Reminds me of what mom used to play for us when we couldn't sleep, as kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My son was interested in the Phantasm movies recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Smoke jazz cigs and listen to FM radio!!!
Avatar 3:27pm ironybread:

Why in the hell is this album still out of print. Why why why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Albert King, the bluesman on the recording:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Matt from Springfield:

The "poinchline"s comin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm common:

hee hee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, this is something else. Didn't realize Albert Brooks released humour records in the 70s alongside Python, Fireside and the other greats!
Avatar 3:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Peace be with you.
Avatar 3:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ah, devil's poo-poo. Missed Caroliner by mere seconds.
Avatar 3:34pm Sem Chumbo:

@Rev. I've been meaning to ask: am I handling this deadly snake correctly?
Avatar 3:36pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

If you have FAITH... if you BELIEVE...... hell no. Put the goddamned snake down and run away with arms flailing in the manner of a cartoon panic. Thus sayeth the Rev, dig?
Avatar 3:37pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Lovely Defekts, by the way.
Avatar 3:37pm steve:

aw i missed Caroliner too. and one of the only releases i don't own...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Rev: I'm not handling a snake--can I still run around flailing in a cartoon panic?
Avatar 3:38pm Sem Chumbo:

Well dug, and deeply. Where's the collection plate?
Avatar 3:39pm steve:

frequency modulation, the only modulation that matters
Avatar 3:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Matt: I insist.
The flailer the better.
Avatar 3:41pm ironybread:

This instrumental track that's on right now - what is it?
  3:43pm jen v.:

you are the best, scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm common:

my favorite scene in phantasm is when the finger turns into a giant fly puppet for some reason and it crawls through the kid's hair. He then throws is into the garbage disposal. good stuff.
Avatar 3:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I was 11 years old when Phantasm came out. Saw it in the theater several times. It was a mind-blower.
Avatar 3:45pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Theaters back then weren't too concerned about letting sicko kids like me into R rated horror flicks, evidently.
Avatar 3:45pm Roberto:

i vividly remember the TV commercials for Phantasm. A bed turning into giant hands and some kind of flying orb.
  3:52pm Jonathan Herweg:

I love Albert brooks , but he's no Mel brooks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Scott Williams:

@joho: may the schwartz be witchoo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Andrew Waterloo:

Yah, I'm having a hard time imaging my 10 year-old wanting to watch a movie like Phantasm... then again she's ad an age where big changes happen.
Avatar 3:57pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Andrew: Phantasm came out same year as Alien. So between those two films, big changes did indeed happen for this kid..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm common:

same here rev. my brother and i were so obsessed with alien that we built a model of the poster (the egg on the strange grid). it lit up and everything. my dad finally gave in and took us to see it. so great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Andrew Waterloo:

Aliens and Terminator were the first R rated movies that I saw as a kid. I think I was 9 or 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember the Phantasm special effects guys explaining how they put bits of sponge into the fake blood coming out of the brain-drilling machines. The sponge pieces were supposed to be the brain bits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Davis:

bloody hell robert ashley twisting my melon man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Scott Williams:

yeah Alien was the 1st R-rated movie Dad took me too. I was 9, and loved it. My 7-yr old brother on the other hand was scarred for life. 1st "grownup" movie (with naked ppl) Mom took me to was "Kramer vs. Kramer". And I didn't get the message!!!
Avatar 4:01pm Bas NL:

This Robert Ashley is a hoot! Hi Scott, hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Parq:

Scott, the "naked" scene in "Kramer" just may be the funniest nude scene ever. Kudos to JoBeth Williams for being relaxed enough to pull it off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm SeanG:

just tuned in to hear the TUBES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Scott Williams:

@SeanG, yeah it's no "Don't Touch Me There", but it hits the spot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Now I need to check out K v. K, not just for nudity but for funny nudity..

Never heard of the Tubes, this is a good 80s rock sound! (What does EFD think of them? I'm leaning towards very positive sentiment).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm SeanG:

I had an awkward moment with my parents seeing "Kramer vs. Kramer" too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Tubes are still together and still fronted by Fee Waybill, it appears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm efd:

@MattfS, if you've never heard of The Tubes then I think I'm not doing my job!
  4:10pm Dean:

I know I'm getting old when an 'FMU listener has never heard of The Tubes! I was thinking this was the album produced by Todd Rundgren, but no. The previous album, Remote Control, was Todd's.
Avatar 4:11pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Very positive sentiment indeed! Several shows with Tubes songs listed--thanks Evan!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Matt from Springfield:

It's funny, because it's a "switch".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Matt from Springfield:

  4:13pm Jonathan Herweg:

Next show I do I'm going to see how many push ups I can do while in studio A for 3 hours, I'm going to tack the number on the bulletin board there. Hence starting the great Wfmu push up contest .
  4:14pm Jonathan Herweg:

Actually not really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Mike East:

ha! turn your radio down joke. Love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Maybe they'll play "White Punks on Dope" on their tour. They're in Newton, NJ, on July 12 - www.thetubes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm common:

good ol fee waybill. was just watching white punks on dope live footage not too long ago. yea ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Tubes: "What Do You Want From Life", "Prime Time", "Brighter Day", "Slipped My Disco", lots of songs to check out.
  4:18pm Dean:

"Mondo Bondage": parody of a parody! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHCaswyW-Mo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Mike East:

@Matt - you must have heard "She's a Beauty"...maybe didn't know it was the tubes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Parq:

Matt, you're making a bunch of us feel old here, but I gotta admit, I envy you the experience of hearing those records for the first time. Find some tracks from their 1977 live album, too, if you can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Greg from Bloomfield:

If I could play rhythm guitar for any band ever: Wedding Present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: I will check that later, who knows I may have.

@Parq: That's true, first experiences are always a joy. Thanks for that rec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Davis:

my favourite is my 12" single of dont touch me there c/w white punks on dope anmd what do you want from life--- got it all covered
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Scott Williams:

Greg, I am liking your comment and dreaming of the chops to keep up with them. Seen Gedge break more than one gtr onstage backinnaday.
  4:22pm Dean:

@Davis: *That* EP is a keeper.
Avatar 4:22pm Jeff:

Gentleman Joe will be so annoyed - he was totally planning to play "You Can Have A Cell Phone ... But Not Me" sometime really soon.

Not that your playing it means he can't. But he might get funny about it.
Avatar 4:23pm ironybread:

I refule to lob first-timer shame on anyone. I bought my first Cheap Trick album last year.
Avatar 4:24pm ironybread:

Refule? That would be "refuse"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Davis:

oh definitely Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey, irony's all right! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Mike East:

I can remember listening to this song (original Spacemen3) and pausing while I could write down the lyrics so I could cover it...must have been pre internet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Carmichael:

Yikes, what a playlist I've missed. Hiya Scott and everybody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Parq:

Yeah, Mike -- remember all the things we couldn't do before the 'Net? Looking up lyrics without a copy of the album (or at all, if the album didn't have a lyric sheet) -- looking up the release date without squinting at the copyright line (or at all if no copy was handy) -- finding out what was on the cover without going to a record store (or at all, if it was obscure or out of print) --
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh, the "Lovin Feeling" was lost for a few secs, but now it's found!
  4:32pm ?:

3rd policeman, a fantastic book... certainly not a difficult pancake. Read any of his other books? Looking for other book recommendations along similarly warped lines...

Third favy star already.. Great this Alto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

@Matt: Where did you grow up, Chechnya? :) ya never heard the Tubes, didn't know Albert Brooks made comedy records ... If you also say you've never seen The Magnificent Seven, I'm asking you to turn in your Guy Card.
Avatar 4:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Had to disappear for a few minutes, delighted that it's still going...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Mike East:

@Parq- Yeah, so time consuming...but I think more gratifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't think I'll ever forget seeing the Buffalo video late one night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Parq:

Q-Mark, At Swim Two Birds and the Dalkey Archives are considered his other great novels. I would also recommend The Poor Mouth, a terrific send up of the sort of folksy-noble Irish poverty memoirs that have only become more popular since Flann's time. Finally, you might enjoy compilations of his newspapers stuff, written under the name Myles na gCopaleen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Carmichael:

@Parq: I don't know of this author, but the translated version of his name is Miles Copeland. I wonder what his motivation was?
  4:46pm ?:

Parq, thanks for the tips!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Stanley:

Is it a bicycle you're after?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Whew, my card's safe for now--The Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai before it. But yeah, you might mention something from before my time, and be surprised that I never heard of it! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Parq:

Carm, The Poor Mouth is a quick read and will give you a great introduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Stanley:

@Parq - The Third Policeman is my favourite, where man and bicycle become one, followed by At Swim Two Birds, where Flann imprisons his characters in the bathroom, if I remember correctly.
Avatar 5:01pm ironybread:

The FCC should give gold stars to DJs who give the legal ID while the clock still says it's the top of the hour. I could have used some gold stars in my college radio career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Is this a People Like Us project? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Carmichael:

@Matt, just giving you a hard time. I assume everyone is a codger like me, but I think I'm the oldest person on most boards, with the exception of the Old Codger himself.

I saw the Tubes probably 15 times in my youth. They played all over Northern California on big bills. I saw them in a roller rink once.
Avatar 5:07pm Serpico:

heayy youuuu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Carmichael:

I think Alan Parsons' radar just went up ......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Wow, they were practically your neighborhood band at that rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Sir Patrick Cowley! His dance music starts, and does not stop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Carmichael:

I have some Star Wars disco mix picture sleeve 45 that I've never actually played. I imagine it sounds like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm efd:

Carmichael, I might have to challenge you for codgeriness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Carmichael:

Its a codger slapdown! Or maybe fall down ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Carmichael:

And Zombie Zombie gets the clicky star of greatness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm chris:

We may be old, but we don't act it (unless we do)... Codgers Unite!
Avatar 5:28pm Sem Chumbo:

The Artful Codger.
  5:29pm jayrope:

Yeah, thanx for Zombie Zombie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Ike:

@ironybread, first the FCC needs to give ox-butt stars to all of the pirates in Flatbush (Brooklyn) and Paterson NJ that interfere with WFMU, WKCR, WNYC, etc. Or maybe rotten breadfruit stars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Carmichael:

Wow, I just looked up this Mike Deasy (the guitarist here). What a pedigree this guy has. But he still doesn't qualify as a codger; he's too cool.
