Yeah, sleep is overrated.

@doca: "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" reference, no?
  10:12pm
JakeGould:

Hello!
  10:12pm

Originally spoken by Mexican bandit(o) in John Huston's Treasure of Sierra Madre, parodied by Mel brooks in Blazing Saddles

@doca: go watch the Magnificent Seven.

Dave Mandl:

It's also in the original novel by B. Traven ("We don't need no stinkin' badges.")
  10:15pm
P-90:

In the novel and the film, the bandito claims that he and his bandito gang are "Federales." When asked to show their badges...

...and Blazing Saddles (We don't need no stinkin' badges)
  10:17pm
doca:

@Dave and P-90: never saw the movie neither read the novel, but I know the reference. I know the author was a very mysterious guy too, neither his wife knew his real name it seems.
  10:18pm
doca:

@Carm: I've seen the Magnificent Seven, great movie. And I think it's way better than the Seven Samurai.
  10:18pm
P-90:

So: it's become a meme or a trope or a running gag or whatever you want to call it: (in Mexican bandito accent) "[Blank]? We don't need no stinkin' [blank]!"
  10:20pm
P-90:

See? It's become so much a part of the culture that you know the gag even though you haven't seen the movie or read the book...

Also the name of a Dan Hicks band -- The Stinking Badges!

Hahaha "We don't need no stinking movies/books, señor"
  10:22pm

I'm always amazed by this "B. Traven was the pen name of a presumably German novelist, whose real name, nationality, date and place of birth and details of biography are all subject to dispute."

@doca - Re: Seven vs. Seven -- BLASPHEMY!
  10:23pm
JakeGould:

I once met a guy on a roof in Williamsburg. At a party. He was wearing a cowboy hat. I asked to see his badge. He said “I don’t need no stinking badge!” And stormed off saying, “You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore.” Big buzzkill that guy was.
  10:24pm
P-90:

@ pss: there you are! Yeah. I forgot about the musical "Stinking Badges."
I do remember the musical "Honeymooners" though
Avatar 10:26pm
Dave Mandl:

@12539: Ah, really? Thanks. I had no idea.
  10:26pm
doca:

@pss: I always say that with a lot of confidence because it's a polemical argument.
Avatar 10:27pm
Dave Mandl:

Yeah, B. Traven was a very interesting guy. An anarchist. His other novels are just as good as that one.
  10:28pm
JakeGould:

Some guy in my building screamed like Ralph Kramden stubbing a toe a few days back. But this was not that funny. Kind of creepy. But I swear, just like Ralph Kramden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

I read The Death Ship and a pile of short stories; enjoyed 'em all.
  10:29pm

@Dave: I never read him, I'll get some of his stuff. Been trying to reconnect to political fiction.
  10:32pm
JakeGould:

PSS, now I have some new audiobooks to download.
  10:32pm
P-90:

No way, no how am I going to enter the 7 vs. 7 debate. Religion, politics, and "The Seven Samurai" are sacred-cow topics best left off the Comments, It can only lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, ruined friendships, broken marriages, the collapse of Civilization As We Know It, and long pointless exchanges of useless opining. And agita. Don't forget agita.
Avatar 10:34pm
Droll:

...trying to reconnect to political fiction. HA! Have you tried commercial new media?
  10:37pm
P-90:

Mickey Dolenz famously does the "sinking badges" gag in the very first episode of The Monkees": Season Two
  Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
12539:

Wow, I never heard James Blackshaw sing before.

(I guess I should add a smiey face)
  10:37pm
doca:

@Droll: didn't get it eheh I've said that meaning books who deal quite directly with political/economical issues. I'm reading the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, if that counts as an example.
@pss: haha OK, I don't want to get in that discussion either. It just that, nevermind all the relevance and technical feats of the Kurosawa movie, I only found the Magnificent Seven a more neatly packed and pleasurable movie than his.
Besides, I think Kurosawa's has not aged as good as Ozu's or Mizoguchi's (but we don't need to get into that discussion eheh)

Usually I only have that problem when using the IOS app from Ipad, but I'm on desktop, so: mebbe just sloppy typing...
  10:40pm
doca:

Can I blame the comment board for not getting right almost all of the English tenses?
  10:42pm
P-90:

"Tenses? We don't need no stinkin' tenses, Senor!"
  10:43pm
doca:

P-90: laughing hard here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

@P-90, that would feel better if the tense was wrong.

  10:46pm

@pss: They are quite easy, but actually I('ve?) never learned the difference between them.

Avatar 10:47pm

Sometimes two, but more often one, I think.
  10:49pm
P-90:

@ doca: assuming that was meant to be funny--actually it's hysterical
  10:50pm
P-90:

@ DJ Dave: Ted and the gang really rocked that one
We ARE listening, not just commenting
Avatar 10:51pm
Droll:

DM, I knew I could count on you!

P-90, That's impossible because some changes are unintentional. In fact, Kenzo recently fixed a bug which left a playlist conversation about the bug without context. Even though the conversation was unchanged, the conversation no longer makes sense. History on the internetz is not as constant as we wish it were.
  10:56pm
P-90:

@Droll: maybe Kenzo was just covering his own ass in that one particular case
And you are correct, Sir, in the future, they will have moved beyond Google, they will use an advanced system called "Potrzebie."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
