Ola Senor Cinco Ash. I just recently became aware of James Hunter through mu local PBS TV station. Love that soul sound.

Matt F:

Don't worry, I'll be gentle.

Zev:

You can wind up with a greet selection of Brill building/Motown deep cuts if you check the Brit band covers. At least that's how it worked for me back in the day. (e.g. "Putty", "I'll Keep Holding On" "Go Now")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Matt F:

Speaking of Shirelles cover bands...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Stanley:

Hi Matt
I've just torn myself away from Diane Kamikaze's show, where I got numbed out by heavy (and I mean heavy) rock music.
The feeling is coming back to my body now.
Avatar 2:18pm
Carmichael:

I found some comp CDs from the Piccadilly and Pye labels. Some great Brit bands.

Wow, just talking about the short, tragic life of Lee Morgan over on Irwin's board yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Doug Schulkind:

Today is the birthday of another tenor titan, the "Little Giant" Johnny Griffin. After 4pm, check out this blowing session with both birthday boys and George Adams: mosaicrecords.tumblr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Matt F:

Yes! I was gonna do both but I don't have as much Johnny Griffin material to work with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
listener james from westwood:

I did not know that Steely Dan cut had a precedent to which its opening nodded. Now I do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Matt F:

After Horace is done, listen carefully to Joe's solo on this one. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Matt F:

Rikki don't lose that songwriting credit...
Avatar 2:36pm

Ya, not like Jake Holmes did with Dazed and Confused.

Music to read crime fiction by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm

Tom- recently read "Slayground" by Richard Stark (Donald Westlake). Highly, highly recommended! As are all of Stark's Parker novels, if you're not familiar. But especially Slayground.
Avatar 2:46pm
Mailman Tom:

I wrote that down. Thanks!

I live about a mile from a theater named for Billy "Sweet Pea" Strayhorn. He came to Pittsburgh as a toddler and has been identified as a 'burgher ever since. Or so I am told.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Brian in UK:

Delicious, Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
listener james from westwood:

We should all get such sweet birthday tributes. Of course, first I'd need a body of recorded work.
  3:12pm
Len:

You like Westlake! I pledged to the right guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
efd:

If you asked me to name people who have covered "Psychotic Reaction" I probably would have gone through five or six hundred names before I got to Brenton Wood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Matt F:

He was on the same label as the Count Five. I think he got strong-armed into it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Doug Schulkind:

I included Wood's Psychotic Reaction on a past marathon premium. The one about... insanity.
  3:18pm
John Funke:

Playing music already? I thought you were gonna put last set's back announcing through the Schaapanizer! Great stuff, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm

@Doug excellent choice!

Why was Fiveash afraid of Sevenash?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Jeff Golick:

It's a trick question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Jeff Golick:

Fiveash ain't afraid of nobody.

Andy S.:

Saw Charlie Feathers live at the old Lone Star Cafe on 13th Street. A haunted and haunting performance -- can't remember what songs he sang, just the unforgettable vibe.

Hackensack Slim:

Hey Matt
Nice Johnny Thunders vibe. Great show as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Matt F:

Never saw Charlie. I did see Bubba Feathers at the Ponderosa Stomp. He had a mullet and a tiedyed tee shirt and an uncool-looking guitar, and he was great! so much more rockabilly than any clown with a wallet chain and hair products.
  3:36pm
Zev:

Love this version! Better sounding drums (how's that possible??)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Jeff Golick:

Also, I'm 9-years-old and late for my afternoon nap.
Enjoying the show too much to settle down!
  3:39pm
Zev:

(I once made a mix-tape of my fave 60's punk w/ pounding drums. Started with Hipsville on one side and a buncha NothWest tunes on the other.)
  3:42pm
Andy S.:

Boy, that was about the greatest Little Walter track I'd never heard before. Was this the B-side of something? I have a bunch of his singles -- maybe this is on one of them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Matt F:

Andy, that was one of those repros from England. It might not have even been on a 45 in its time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
