duane, everyone!
Avatar 12:03pm dc pat:

Hi Duane. Commenters: I just have to finish up a thought from Ken's board: My point about "detained" is that when a guy with a gun stops you, throws you in jail indefinitely, it's not being "detained"--it's worse than being arrested. It's a euphemism dreamed up by the Bush administration and again, swallowed whole by news media.
Avatar 12:03pm pierre:

I am on board the Duane Train !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm DCE:

I am on board the dc pat train
Avatar 12:05pm Jshatan:

How is everyone? Been too long - work, etc. The premium is unreal!
Avatar 12:06pm dc pat:

People on Guatanomo aren't being "detained," they've been imprisoned forever with no trial. That's essentially a kidnapping. OK, done with that. (I just said "essentially" which I'm not comfortable with either)
Avatar 12:06pm Sem Chumbo:

I am detained by the Duane train. But not against my will.
Avatar 12:07pm Duane:

Hey Jeremy! Glad to have you back on board!!

Avatar 12:12pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hi All!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm mariano:

@dc pat & bibi (if you're still there): the difference in legal terms between being arrested and detained is that being arrested involves an official accusation and declaration, followed usually by incarceration. Being detained is something lighter, and it's usually applied to suspects or potential witnesses for questioning.

What's going on at Guantanamo is neither, it's simply locking the door and throwing away the key, an abuse which ironically was one of the primary grievances of the American revolutionaries against Britain.

Ok, back to the show!
  12:13pm paula pc:

I thought I did not like HNIA; i was wrong
  12:13pm Kati:

I know the feeling.
Avatar 12:13pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Btw "Stars on ESP" is one of my favorite Vaughn Oliver cover designs, the typography is beautiful...
Avatar 12:15pm northguineahills:

Warn Defever put together a Detroit booty bass remixes of HNIA in 2000, but couldn't find a label to put it out b/c everyone was rather baffled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Mike East:

Duane! I picked up Stanley Clarke "School Days" at the record store on Saturday. Great recommendation! Thanks!
Avatar 12:15pm B/wad:

Good shit DuaneTrain, Rock me steady in London!
Avatar 12:15pm dc pat:

@mariano: that's what I'm saying. They can't say arrested because of the legal baggage and everyone has just accepted it. They use detained for the Guantanamo inmates which just goes to show how meaningless the term is. I'm talking about common usage here...
Avatar 12:16pm northguineahills:

(he used Detroit producers)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm robyn:

thanks @dc pat. (agree with you re: guantanamo btw. not sure how you can call it anything but kidnapping...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Mike East:

also, I just saw Roberta Flack go into the elevator

@robyn: absolutely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Kat in Chicago:

@ngh whaaat? I would love to hear that

Oh oh. I just had a passing thought about pad thai. And the cart is just outside my office ...
Avatar 12:19pm northguineahills:

When I talked to him in 2001, he was disappointed he couldn't get a single label to bight. He might of self-released it, but he wanted it to be on vinyl.
Avatar 12:20pm Jshatan:

This sounds hot. The new Patten album is quite the tapestry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm mariano:

@dc pat: No, totally agree with you! I was more responding to bibi's question on Ken's show about the difference between arrest and detainment, that's all.
Avatar 12:21pm Jshatan:

Yo, Uretsky! How's tricks? And yes, that is classic Vaughn Oliver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Kat in Chicago:

Ha, Duane, I wanted to play this Garnier track on my own show but couldn't be bothered to do the "radio edit". Played "Beat (Da Boxx)" instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm KRYPT:

@Duane, went to the Jazz Spastiks album launch just there and it was off the damn hook :)

Avatar 12:30pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Duane, I went to the "Dust & Grooves" book release party at the Powerhouse Arena Saturday night, it was fun...
Avatar 12:32pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

and even though I don't especially like Dewers, I put up with it since it was free ;)
Avatar 12:32pm Duane:

Jan: Oh cool, I saw flix of the party..looked great! Dewars is nasty! You're a better man than myself
Avatar 12:37pm Jshatan:

I'll take Dewars over JW Red. And the free part always improves the taste!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm chris:

Woot! Dieter! Can't wait for that one... killer.
Avatar 12:38pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

The soda helped make it a bit more palatable...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Kat in Chicago:

aaaugh I would have LOVED to hear a patten interview.
Avatar 12:40pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Dewars is a little sweet for my palate, but I can deal w/ it being a lower-mid-priced whisky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm chris:

Go Japanese for Single Malts, y'all... Unless you have mad money, that is... Then the Scott's have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Kat in Chicago:

You had a RSD release Duane??? With Funkineven? I had no idea. Do you know if any Chicago stores got that? Didn't see it at Gramaphone when I visited.
Avatar 12:43pm Duane:

KAt: Yeah! It was Yellow colored vinyl.. it's apparently sold out, but i've seen people put it upon discogs
Avatar 12:43pm northguineahills:

I had a bottle of Yamazaki 12 before the project I was working was terminated. Now I'm being a bit more frugal.
Avatar 12:43pm thunderish' Jay:

Good Mourn everyone.. for a person witch best release from 2012 its kicker - not you, what record would you people suggest from 2013?
Avatar 12:44pm V Priceless:

Hello! great soft machine record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm chris:

Yeah, enjoying a Yamazaki 12 now... Like it as much as Suntori Hibiki. Personally, at about $35 a bottle, I'd rather have 1 bottle of either over 2 of Dewers or JW, etc.
Avatar 12:47pm Sem Chumbo:

@NGH: don't this is frugal, but it's North America's 1st single malt: Glen Breton Rare. www.glenoradistillery.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Kat in Chicago:

@Duane Ohh, I didn't know you were Devin Dare. Still don't recall seeing it - would have remembered that yellow vinyl. Yes, it's a bit dear from Discogs... I'll doublecheck Gphone this weekend.
Avatar 12:49pm Jshatan:

I was digging on Hibiki 12 Y.O. at a swank open bar event last month. Quite nice. I'd try the Glen Breton!
Avatar 12:49pm Duane:

Kat in Chicago: The secret's out!!! Yeah, it will eventually get repressed, so don't feed the voltures if you dont have to:) If its a nice price, by all means
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Kat in Chicago:

I got pals at Gphone, maybe there's one lurking about. Otherwise I'll wait for the repress. Thanks :)
Avatar 12:54pm Sem Chumbo:

Swag alert! Just got mine. Goldfinch T's and premiums from FXO and Meghan:-) Sorry now didn't get yours too, Duane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm chris:

Yup, Glenora looks like a reason to visit Canada. I'll be on the lookout for it at the local boozey store.
Avatar 12:59pm northguineahills:

@chris: $35 a bottle! crap, even a liter bottle Jameson is $37 in my hood. I think I paid $50-some for my last bottle of Yamazaki. When I go down to FL, I'm amazed liquor is about 55% of what I pay up here.

@Sem Chumbo: I haven't seen that one yet. Will keep my peepers open for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm chris:

@NGH, does whisky get cheaper in the summer? Winter up there should have driven up whisky prices like heating fuel prices...

Wow. Niceeee.
Avatar 1:05pm thunderish' Jay:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm chris:

@NGH: OK, so maybe it was a bit over $50, now that I'm looking back... Ah well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm KRYPT:

Christ, you guys, here in Scotland Dewars is classed as swill, only for cheap ass cocktails, we don't even get Johnny Walker, that's export only blend (ie swill). Bailey Nicol Jarvie is the only passable blended whisky imho. Stick with the single malt, you only live once :)
  1:08pm paula pc:

how much do we love the dayton scene and what it produced? rhetorical question. this is SO much fun, my goodness
  1:09pm paula pc:

and props to Dam Funk too of course...that was just awesome
Avatar 1:10pm northguineahills:

Here, Dewars is just a notch above the cheap-ass well whisky, although it still goes for $6-8 a shot.

That was so cool! Sounded like summer

  1:17pm djelrock:

Why is it so hard to find some good Old Parr or Buchanan's in ur corner dive? That sh@t should be stocked regular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chris:

Must travel to Scotland! A fellow my wife works with has quite a collection of Single Malts from the Isle. I've tasted a lot of good stuff with that guy. I don't have the money to collect like that, but I'd go there and drink for sure.

  1:19pm paula pc:

i dunno, but it would probably go the way of this poor museum (on my end of the state): http://www.vocalhalloffame.com/. it's the same reason the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (whatever one may think of it) has outposts here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm KRYPT:

Glenfarclas 105 cask strength malt, is the most deliciously volatile way to get your scotch on. Inhale it and you would get a DUI, Ahhhhh, nectar.
Avatar 1:22pm Duane:

paula pc: Oh my! That's horrible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm mariano:

In 2011 my gf at the time and I were in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Went to the White Hart, the oldest pub in E'burgh, and the whisky menu was pages long. The people were really nice and helpful, throwing a few free tastes our way. They also have a really nice Swedish mixed berry cider everywhere, which goes great with the whisky as a side drink.

@ duane -- this gets people to travel: http://creationmuseum.org/ -- and the amusement parks do -- but music museums, even with a "living" concert component, have a hard time...maybe you have to be a diehard to appreciate them, I don't know. maybe it's the wrong format

There's a nice scotch bar down the street from me, the Duke of Montrose (Brooklyn), but of all the dark liquors, scotch gives me a fierce hangover, unlike Irish, for some reason.
Avatar 1:33pm Duane:

yes it is THE Gong Show JP Morgan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm efd:

Duane, one of these days you should just do an entire show of just songs that have that three-beat "bahmp-bahmp-bahmp" progression in them. (I always associate that figure with Earth, Wind & Fire but would not be surprised to learn it originated elsewhere.)
Avatar 1:37pm Duane:

efd: That would be pretty fun to do:) Loads of Toto licks come to mind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm KRYPT:

@mariano, Malt is best consumed as a post prandial, with a back of porter or good pale ale, so get a good meal inside you first and that should help with the hangovers. Or just have another for breakfast :)
Avatar 1:43pm dale:

The first couple of Sabbath records aren't really metal - more like groove-heavy hard rock. Then they get progressively less interesting - fast.

@robyn: Totally understand, and to be fair, much of their subject matter was really bleak, to say the least.

Hello fellow Duaniacs! Will be tuning into the archives, but had to chime in. I think this Queen Bee song would go well with thei King Bee one sung by John Belushi on SNL.

Yeah, all kinds of funny comments on the pandas: people saying they're location shots of a Japanese porn flick, or a sequel to Eyes Wide Shut. I think it'd be the perfect retirement job for Mick Collins!
