Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

My Time Now
  Hanging out with Fab
I knew that the Jermaine song I played wasn't Daddy's Home. Some listeners asserted that I had played the wrong song. THings were already disjointed and panicky in my mind.
Jermaine Jackson  That's How Love Goes   Options Jermaine  Motown  1972  LP  my rex have been sounding skratchier than ever lately. really going deep with some of these $1 LPs. It's an understood risk and one well worth taking. However, the skratches, good Lord. I also don't like playing whole songs on an hour show. Too much time when other excitements could be happening.
Chick Corea  Picture 1   Options Piano Improvisations Vol. 1  ECM  1970? 3?  LP  jazztok™ ensues
Closet Fusionists
Does Vituosity Bore You? dusty@wfmu.org
  OMG I'm a blowhard, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Tugboat Richie Checkin' In
Tugboat Richie is a regular caller. He is a tugboat caotain on the Hudson and the East River. These are not the little tugboats one might imagine, rather they are sophisticated ships with all the latest technological gizmology, Tugboat Richie assisted in the evacuation of people from the Wall Street area after the attack on 9-11. A great guy.

Sarah Dislikes the 90's Music I've Been Playing .... and i liked the primus
REO Speedwagon  Keep On Rollin'   Options       WAV  MTV broadcast of Live Aid. I kind of like how the guitar is buried and it sounds real makeshift like those charity multi-band fests can be. The band had to play in Milwaukke later in the evening and still Kevin Cronin really goes for it with his singing. I admire that. Not worrying if he's blowing his voice out (like mine is) and the BEach Boys throw in some background vocals ... and the crowd.

Avatar 6:04pm kat330:

Hey, Clay and all! Off to prepare dinner, but listening.
Avatar 6:05pm david_:

hi, all. that IS how love goes.
Avatar 6:05pm Cecile:

Clay, this isn't Daddy's Home.

Also, except for a couple of Michael solo albums, I prefer the J-5 together to separate.

I think the Jackson you missed was Jackie, the oldest.
Avatar 6:05pm still b/p:

The Germaine song'd be a bit better, I think, if it had more of the Motown musician and recording style of a few years earlier, if that makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm dale:

i already microwaved my dinner, so i'm all in.
Avatar 6:07pm still b/p:

That's Jermaine...Jackson, not Greer, whatevah.
Avatar 6:08pm Cecile:

fusion sucks. That's why.
Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Ralphine:

I liked Bill Connors, the original Return to Forever guitarist, better than Al DiMeola.
Avatar 6:08pm david_:

no Jaco Pastorius for Fabio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Andrew Waterloo:

astutely technical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Davis:

i think the ecm scene lacks soul
Avatar 6:09pm Cecile:

I liked pop-fusion when it was funky.
Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Ralphine:

Like Headhunters?
Avatar 6:10pm Whooda:

Ginger Baker made the transition from a jazz drummer to a rock drummer.
Avatar 6:10pm Cecile:

yeah, Ralphine. stuff with a groove. Simpler stuff.
Avatar 6:12pm Cecile:

The Ludacris school of foreign policy.
Avatar 6:12pm Cecile:

Avatar 6:12pm david_:

"Lead, follow or step aside." Also, "hard right, not Bud Lite." Love Tugboat.
Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Ralphine:

I think I mentioned before that I got turned onto fusion by seeing Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea on Soundstage back in 1974. They did a duet of Someday My Prince Will Come, and Herbie's synthesizer got away from him pretty badly at one point.
  6:13pm gibbon man:

Godfrey just touched me. love the chat guys x x x
  6:13pm Oscar:

tugboat needs to be the next dusty fill-in
  6:14pm Oscar:

Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Ralphine:

Can't hear Final Countdown without thinking of Gob Bluth.
Avatar 6:16pm still b/p:

Never could take this music seriously for even the thinnest slice of a second.
Avatar 6:16pm david_:

I want music like this Europe song to come back, unironically. How long will it take? Or has it already begun?
Avatar 6:16pm Cecile:

he owns that song now, Ralphine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm dale:

here's tonight's space station sighting information for the hudson valley. i'm sure it's close to the same for jersey city and manhattan

Avatar 6:17pm Cecile:

david, you need to hang out with power metal fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Andrew Waterloo:

Fusion seemed to usher in that extreme crisp 80s studio production style and unfortunately that has stuck to most contemporary jazz.
Avatar 6:18pm david_:

Put a quarter in the hate pig, Clay ;)
  6:18pm marmalade kitty:

Royalties on final countdown must be huge..
Avatar 6:19pm Bas NL:

Long time not heard, but 'The Final Countdown' is really a great track. Kind of forgot about it!
Avatar 6:19pm Cecile:

it is a sweet piece of cheese, Bas.
Avatar 6:20pm david_:

that was my next thought, Cecile, I realized they've never gone away.
Avatar 6:20pm Cecile:

It's corny, but it makes me smile.
Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Ralphine:

Don't give up on jazz without hearing Hiromi Uehara.
Avatar 6:20pm Whooda:

The term "Jazz" is not concrete. There is Harlem Jazz, Dixieland jazz, freejazz, classical jazz, the term is confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Davis:

david, i dont think irony has any place in listening to music , if it grabs you , then it does,
Avatar 6:21pm Bas NL:

He, he.. and i just found it in my 7'' collection.. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm dale:

reo speedwagon- another non ironic few great singles
Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Ralphine:

The thing about music is that if I really like a song, I can't imagine why anyone else wouldn't like it and if I really dislike a song, I can't imagine how anyone else could possibly like it. I don't feel that strongly about any other art form.
Avatar 6:25pm Cecile:

Ornette was a gateway to me to dig swing. I work backwards.
Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Ralphine:

I read DownBeat in high school, too, Mr. Pigeon. I liked Leonard Feather's blindfold tests.
Avatar 6:27pm Cecile:

I memorized whole issues of the Stereo Review record review section. DownBeat came later
  6:27pm iris:

Any chance of hearing Billie Holiday, Clay? Her birthday just passed and I celebrated by listening to her all day. She got me into jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm dale:

now i wanna hear some gino vanelli
Avatar 6:27pm david_:

See, I'd think the guy who said he worried a lot would find an escape in the relative freedom of jazz...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't think it's the improv that bothers people as much as the overwhealming nature of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm dale:

hell's kitchen had some great transvestite hookers on the corners at night.
Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Ralphine:

I read Stereo Review, too, but for the equipment reviews. A guy named Julian Hirsch comes to mind.
Avatar 6:29pm Cecile:

Yes, it is that far away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm dale:

'whip it baby' came out of tulsa?
Avatar 6:30pm Cecile:

It did, as did Burn Rubber, and Early in the Morning.
Avatar 6:30pm david_:

that is true, andrew, and many people fundamentally don't get/hear the structure of jazz...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm dale:

a 2 inch beveled sash brush is a painter's best friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

My go to is On the Corner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar 6:35pm david_:

Avatar 6:35pm Whooda:

@Davis. That is true and literal: disinformation, propaganda and superficial entertainment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm dale:

Avatar 6:38pm Whooda:

@dale, I've had mine since the mid 80's. It doesn't get much use but it's always ready to make magic. Great score on those brushes. I once worked at Home Depot in the paint department and we kept the Purdy brushes under lock and key. hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm dale:

a friend hired me to paint a couple of bedrooms. i got there and he said he had to go buy the paint 'but it'll take you a day to tape off the trim.' i told him i don't do that and had to describe cutting in and he wasn't believing me til he saw it.
  6:40pm iris:

Yeah! Go ahead Clay!
Avatar 6:40pm Night Owl:

A full lunar eclipse will occur early Tuesday morning, darkening the full moon and possibly tinting it a reddish hue that causes some to call it a "Blood Moon".

For nearly an hour and a half, the moon will be dimmed and possibly appearing a copper color because of sunlight bent by the atmosphere. The total eclipse begins around 3 a.m. EST and ends around 4:30 a.m., with the moon at its dimmest at 3:46 a.m.
  6:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

A great champion of absinthe, that Jarry. Which probably explains everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm dale:

EVERY clothing and show store on the upper west side blasted bamboleo out their doors in 1988
Avatar 6:42pm david_:

i love that feeling where you don't remember if you last heard a song last week or 20 years ago
Avatar 6:43pm Whooda:

@Night Owl are you sure? I think the eclipes was night before last and the red moon is on the 15th. I saw the last half of the eclipes Tuesday night. Is there going to be another eclipse?

Avatar 6:47pm Night Owl:

Trying to decide whether or not to spend the $60 to see Yes this summer. Yes will perform 1971′s Fragile in its entirety as well as every track from 1972′s Close To The Edge, followed by an encore of the band’s greatest hits and material off their new studio album, Heaven and Earth, which is due on July 8.

Bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and singer Jon Davison ... no Jon Anderson.
Avatar 6:47pm david_:

Avatar 6:48pm Whooda:

@Night Owl that sounds like the deal of the century! All you need are a few srooms and you'll have a lifetime memory.
  6:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Ken / Night Owl thanks. That is GREAT news.
Avatar 6:50pm Night Owl:

@Whooda This Tuesday morning ... just read the news ....

  6:51pm Listener John from NJ:

It never occurred to me until you sang a little, Mr. Pigeon, that in the song "Sweet City Woman" (by the Stampeders, I now know!) may be singing "C'est bon, c'est bon, bon, bon, c'est bon" etc., instead of just making those rhythmic sounds. Am I right maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm davex:

Enjoyed the laid-back call-in show, guys! Have a good night, everyone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm mariano:

Clay! Playing one of my faves, one of my running songs, never fails to pick up the pace.
