Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

It's Irwin's new release, Gary!

I'm still Procrastination Spice, tax-wise. Need to snort a fat line of cinnamon and GET AT IT instead of just sitting listening to the music and lamely plucking out a couple of currently-stuck-in-mind melodies mostly on one guitar string.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

Just launched my checks out the door for quarterlies and the federal one yesterday. Always a risk of forgetting the first-quarter estimated taxes amid the 4/15 hoo-hah.

Greetings UM (and all) - I'm on the road today and listening via the app as long as my connection holds up. Probably won't be able to comment further so just assume that any efd bait is successful.

Yes I have. I'm not sure whether or not I have that. I'm looking forward to reading his book.
Avatar 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Neil deGrasse Tyson get to the Intergalactic Laxative yet in his program?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm pacific standard simon:

That particular Grass Roots sounds a lot like The Guess Who, another Hinky Dinky fave band.

Okay, I'll bite. I'll guess...Bachman Turner Overdrive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

No googling...who wrote this?
  1:03pm Santos L Halper:

Can't remember but maybe one of the buffalo Springfield?
Avatar 1:03pm Brian in UK:

Saw Jon Anderson in Yes singing with Jon Hendricks at the National Jazz & Blues Festival two weeks before Woodstock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Santos!
Avatar 1:05pm Brian in UK:

They also covered the Byrds 'I See You' on the first album.
Avatar 1:06pm Brian in UK:

The Who were top of the bill warming up for two weeks later. They were good. Best live band?
  1:06pm Mother May Eye:

That Yes sounded a lot like Caravan.
  1:09pm Santos L Halper:

Yes had lots of interesting cover songs until they got their cosmic laxative on. OTOH not too many covers of Yessongs...maybe for the best.
  1:10pm Mother May Eye:

Germs riffing "Roundabout" on "Forming"?
Avatar 1:10pm Brian in UK:

Wondermints do a song called 'In and Around Greg Lake' Love the play on both bands.

*intergalactic* laxative, sorry Donovan. And yay XTC!

Lots to like in mid 70s Steely Dan.

Contrary view: although I enjoy/admire much of SD's work, I deem them ground zero of the utter deflation of rock music. Post-SD anybody who didn't have the gumption or wherewithal to rock the hell out just chilled and hoped folks would play along. See, e.g., U2, Radiohead.
Avatar 1:17pm Brian in UK:

Can still remember the first time I heard 'Do It Again'. Great. Saw them live with two drummers. Greedy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Yep, that's a contrary view alright.
Avatar 1:20pm Brian in UK:

Grow them indoors/greenhouse.

@MME It died when it changed from Rock 'n Roll to Rock. R 'n R is grubby. Rock is for geologists.
Avatar 1:24pm still b/p:

Avatar 1:24pm ndbob:

goo done here - don't know this
Avatar 1:26pm βrian:

Thy goo be done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Stanley:

@MME - I developed an ambivalence towards SD but lately I think their music is more sophisticated than I previously gave credit. I agree that post SD their has been a definite 'safe' rock mode of the like you mention. Inhabited by countless 'successful' bands,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm listener jeff:

I so feel like this Merle song right now....
  1:30pm Mother May Eye:

@BiUK: Indeed, "Rock" sounds like a brand conjured by a marketing consultant. But I don't think RnR died, nor do I think SD are guilty of attempted genrecide. Rather, SD helped to legitimize so "cool" an approach to rock music--bolstered by the overt enlistment of superb, virtuoso studio musicians--that former wannabe headbangers decided instead not to fret too much about pushing boundaries (of volume, speed, vocal excess). Yes, @Stanley, precisely. And of course "sophisticated" is a double-edged word...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm listener jeff:

stream fishing in the mountains would be a nice replacement for this computer right now
Avatar 1:32pm Brian in UK:

@jeff this is what Uncle Michael does, he plays songs that you do not realise you want to hear until you hear them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener jeff:

there are a lot of songs i don't realize that I want to hear - bring 'em on.
Avatar 1:35pm Brian in UK:

It is all too easy to play the electric guitar badly as we all know.

@MME I agree with you. Well........

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Went to an Al Green show once. During one sing, he barely sang a word. Instead, he held the microphone out toward the audience, which sang every word in unison. It was truly one of THE great moments in live music I've ever experienced.
