Options April 7, 2014: A Celebration of Shulkoth! Communiqués with the dearly depared Citizen Kafka.

photomontage: Marty Cutler

As Edward Haber, one of Citizen Kafka's co-conspirators says, "Based on the lunar calendar, the celebration of Shulcoth has arrived. To determine the actual date, Mr. "Angry" Red Weltz commented thusly: “I've rolled the shards of 3 Boswell Sisters 78s, studied the entrails of a Howdy Doody hand puppet and read the soy sauce smears on a Wo Hop lo mein plate. All the signs say April 7th”. And so it shall be-- another celebration of the dearly departed Citizen Kafka on Irene's show, featuring Edward Haber, Kenny Kosek and Marty Cutler and a cast of???.

hey irene!
Avatar 12:05pm kat330:

H'Irene and hi all Trues to come.

Hi, common!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Not exactly live, not exactly WBAI, but I remember these ridiculous fun shows!
Avatar 12:06pm drumsoverbogota:

Nice beginning! Good almost noon for everybody!
Avatar 12:07pm Parq:

Okay, here's a question. If I want to listen to some of Citz K's FMU archives, and I don't want to download Real Audio, is there any other player that will run the RA format? Sorry to get this geeky this early in the proceedings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm mariano:

Hi Irene, everyone -- thanks for the much needed dose of merriment!
Avatar 12:11pm Van in DC:

This probably wasn't the ideal day to be late, looks like. Oops.

But the Cherry Blossoms needed a shoulder to cry on. The weather has them pretty confused.
Avatar 12:12pm kat330:

Yes, humor is the antidote here for a very rainy day and Monday and just back from the County Clerk's office where nobody -- I mean NO ONE -- had a smile on her face.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Webhamster Henry:

@Parq: you can use VLC .. do "Open Network", paste the link from the archive into the "Network" url
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Irene Trudel:

@Parq, use VLC. It works for all of those files, Mac or PC
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Webhamster Henry:

VLC can be little choppy though. I used to keep an old version of realplayer around that didn't have so many ads, but I bet it doesn't work anymore.
Avatar 12:14pm drumsoverbogota:

It's normal for a non-english native speaker not understand a lot of things in this program?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Brian C.:

Approx when did this Citizen K stuff originally air?
Avatar 12:14pm kat330:

@drums: I'd almost guarantee it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey, what's playing at the Clutch Cargo Space this week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm common:

hi kat330! all!
Avatar 12:17pm Parq:

Harry, thanks. I know that files can skip on VLC, but that sounds like a good solution for the occasions when I want to hear a really old FMU archive show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Irene Trudel:

@ drumsoverbogota, yes. And even some native speakers might not understand the language. We will translate presently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Ike:

I didn't know that VLC could do that. I used to use Real Alternative with Media Player Classic for old RealAudio files.
Avatar 12:19pm Van in DC:

I have no idea
  12:21pm Robert:

That bit about solid rocketry was true. I'm still trying to get my homemade black powder & whistle rockets to fly consistently rather than either exploding, fizzling, or flying at the audience.
  12:22pm Robert:

I have not attempted the wire method of charging as given in that recorded bit.
Avatar 12:23pm kat330:

I thought Clutch Cargo was THE creepiest cartoon ever. Glad I wasn't really young at its inception.
Avatar 12:28pm kat330:

Nice band sounds.
Avatar 12:29pm drumsoverbogota:

Thank you Irene and kat330! ;)

I normally understand movies and news channels, but I guess i'm not used to radio yet
Avatar 12:30pm Cecile:

Love live Citizen Kafka!
Avatar 12:31pm still b/p:

This'll make you sit up straight.
Avatar 12:32pm Cecile:

Long live, der.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Webhamster Henry:

Yes, long intros from the Citizen.
Avatar 12:36pm Parq:

I spent a few years living in Harrisburg in the summer of 1981.
Avatar 12:38pm kat330:

I dig the ting-a-ling-a-ling sounds.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Webhamster Henry:

I was probably there at 2 Boots, which is now closed.
Avatar 12:53pm kat330:

Under the cataract and all wet.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

You have to hear these in the context of WBAI's community Bulletin board and promotional carts.
Avatar 12:58pm kat330:

I'm amazed how much works outside of context.
Avatar 12:58pm Cecile:

it is quite funny, if you've ever heard a community bulletin board anywhere, Henry. I used to edit those things back in the day for a smalltown NPR station. YOu wouldn't believe what people thought were events.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Webhamster Henry:

Agreed, but at WBAI, the events were things like this: www.echonyc.com...
Avatar 1:02pm Cecile:

I"ll have to listen to that when I have a minute.
Avatar 1:05pm Cecile:

oh dear lord, that was hilarious.
Avatar 1:19pm kat330:

Mr. Goodman! :)
  1:35pm ?:

Wonderful, remember going to see Wretched Refuse, So fun, great show
  1:37pm Jack:

That was me, not anonymous on purpose...has anyone noticed the math problems to post have gotten much easier? Do WFMU listeners need remedial problems even when sober? just sayin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Irene Trudel:

@Jack, we're just trying to see if you're awake! (and a real human)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Webhamster Henry:

The security equation is easy on purpose... always has been AFAIK.
  1:49pm Jack:

I remember it still being addition, but you actually had to add! Anyway, digging Statman now, what a monster.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Andrew Waterloo:

Anything but captcha, anything but captcha
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Webhamster Henry:

My band has a rule: NO NOODLING.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Irene Trudel:

Unless the noodling has a purpose...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Well, they eventually get somewhere...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Webhamster Henry:

In this case, toe Flop-eared Mule.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Andy Statman, National Heritage Fellow: www.nyfolklore.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Irene Trudel:

Very cool, Henry! Ed knew about this but hasn't seen the article yet. Thanks for the link!
  2:00pm O Pine:

Noodling is freedom. No noodling is indie-fascist.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

Noodling just has to be done for right reasons.
Avatar 2:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

holy mackerel!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Webhamster Henry:

Kafka had a lot of alternate lyrics for this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Gaylord Fields:

Kafka's version even tops the Smothers Brothers' two different takes on the Santa Claus mythos:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Webhamster Henry:

Kafka also did fill-ins as well as his more produced shows, where he could play his "Vox Populi" outsider recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Matt from Springfield:

First time catching the annual Citizen Kafka show live--it's been splendid! Thanks Irene and guests!
Avatar 2:43pm Parq:

This was a freaking great show. Thanks, Irene, as always, for your labor of love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Tanz mit mir, Milchratten!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Webhamster Henry:

"so cheesy , as a cheese should be"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Some guy shouting "Commie Nudie" was a frequent caller on WBAI call-in shows.
  2:46pm Robert:

Holding back the Nothing Song for the end?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Irene Trudel:

@Robert, not gonna play that one today. There's a version in last year's show I believe.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Aha! Citizen Kafka Band. No theremin break on this one though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Lampoon/Fireside/Python/WBAI/WFMU spirited humor! So great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Matt from Springfield:
