Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm rrg:

About bloody time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm rrg:

I'll never get those nine minutes back.
  3:10pm Alison Porchnik:

I look forward to hearing some of the instruments today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Webhamster Henry:

Looking forward to this, as an old Microtonailst myself and erstwhile webmaster/webhamster and board member of the American Festival of Microtonal Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm common:

lookin' forward to this interview, irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm common:

@Webhamster: are you really on that board?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm common:

goddam, i wish i could house those.
Avatar 3:14pm northguineahills:

So, UC-San Diego no longer have a collection of his instruments?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Webhamster Henry:

I was - I moved out of NYC and couldn't go to the meetings. However, they have some shows coming up as usual, www.afmm.org
Avatar 3:15pm steve:

wowwee, just look at that stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm common:

@Webhamster: that's great! thanks for the link!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Webhamster Henry:

"Corporeal music" is what he was about - musicians on stage, in costume, acting, dancing, a whole theatre experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Webhamster Henry:

There was a good show at LaMaMa of "Petals" and a few other pieces with dancers dressed as giant sponge-like things.
  3:20pm jan:

Partch Instrumentarium: Very important issue. It would be a sad loss to
lose this resource.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Listen carefully for the one F-word near the end of Barstow, unless this recording removes it.
  3:33pm Giant sponge-like thing:

What do you mean "dressed up as"? What are you saying?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Webhamster Henry:

They were people pretending to be you.
  3:34pm Giant sponge-like thing:

I'm calling my agent . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Webhamster Henry:

Well, here's a video from that show .. not the sponge-y part though.
Avatar 3:42pm MikeY:

Theremin on Acid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Webhamster Henry:

What's become of Dean Drummond's Newband instruments (Zoomoozophone)?
Avatar 3:43pm Irwin:

  3:44pm Serendipity:

Irwin! Corey!
Avatar 3:44pm Irwin:

BTW, Joe Frank episode will start around 4:20.
Avatar 3:44pm Irwin:

Henry: Dean's instruments belong to his widow, Stephani Starin. She will reclaim them.
Avatar 3:45pm MikeY:

They'll blow their blue-toopers, they'll bang their ta-tinkers. They'll blow their Who-whoopers, they'll bang their gar-dinkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Webhamster Henry:

It's true that the "dungeon scene" in 5000 Fingers of Dr. T is VERY like a Partch concert.
Avatar 3:47pm MikeY:

Good stuff. I wonder if the Hyde Collection would take these instruments?? Just a thought
Avatar 3:47pm Irwin:

Henry: I had the same thought first time I saw T5KF.
  3:48pm Smithsonian Institute:

How come we're not all over this?
  3:49pm MrFab:

For my West Coast peeps, check out the on-going MicroFest in L.A., featuring John Schneider's Partch group. They usually play "Barstow".
  3:49pm lee:

You can play the instruments. Virtually. (way cool) http://musicmavericks.publicradio.org/features/feature_partch.html#marimba And listen to even MORE of Harry's music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Webhamster Henry:

I wonder if RPI's EMPAC has some room for them.
  3:51pm Serendipity:

@Smithsonian: Um, because you do safe. You do not do out-there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Webhamster Henry:

The AFMM concert on April 13th has Lyrics of Li Po (Partch) at Spectrum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Webhamster Henry:

the replicas should be better, because Harry was not really a carpenter
  3:54pm Serendipity:

If Partch was a carpenter, and I were a lady...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm common:

this is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Webhamster Henry:

Partch was a pioneer of indie record biz. GATE5 was how he distributed recordings of his pieces, which was an important (if small) income source for him.
  4:02pm ?:

i do not no this irwin but i lik him bc i just tuyrn on an d HERE IS PARTCH. well done irwin
Avatar 4:04pm TDK60:

Music for hitchhikers and riders of rails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Webhamster Henry:

These pieces are based on Partch's diary entries when he was riding the rails himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm joe:

Sorry to say I have not been able to give this show the attention I would love to because of work. So disappointed I have not been able to focus more on it
  4:09pm ?:

no prob jo i took yer place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Webhamster Henry:

The WFMU Archive to the rescue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Lewis:

Bitter Music, the collection of his journal writings during his hobo days is a remarkable book - bits of music written in with the proseā€¦ You can almost see him thinking! It has been recorded but the narrator was a truly unfortunate choice given the material.
  4:11pm r i s k y:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS IRWIN. I had to opportunity to see the Partch Institute last year, it was great. I will be attending Carnagie Hall as well.
  4:14pm paul Martin:

Sadly missed the beginning as you are on Daylight Saving Time whilst it's still winter here in U.K.!
Avatar 4:14pm Irwin:

FYI: The archived version will have the engineering miscues REMOVED.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Webhamster Henry:

@Lewis: it's true Warren Burt doesn't sound much like Partch, but he knows his microtonality. Look up some of his pieces - I was playing one of old cassettes earlier this week.
Avatar 4:16pm steve:

thanks Lewis, im going to have to check that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Lewis:

thanks @Webhamster Henry! I find his reading to be too sappy, but I will look at some of his other work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Webhamster Henry:

@steve visit innova's site; they published a lot of great obscure Partch stuff. www.innova.mu
  4:18pm ?:

haha iriwn you will correct miscues ;)))) controverial!@@!!
Avatar 4:19pm steve:

very cool. thanks Henry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Webhamster Henry:

www.innova.mu... Enclosure III (the scrapbook) is particularly jaw dropping.
Avatar 4:23pm steve:

WHOA has this been mentioned yet? play some virtual Partch instuments!
  4:23pm lee:

PS Delusion of the Fury album had a 2nd disk with an intro from Harry about the instruments. Priceless. (Especially the bass marimba) Not included with the CD. Sniff-sniff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm common:

thanks, everyone, for the links! lemme know if you need some help with that move, irwin.
Avatar 4:25pm steve:

thanks Irwin
  4:26pm Al Stewart:

Hey!, oh, 'at' the border. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Webhamster Henry:

@Lee It's on the Innova 2 collection (with the aforementioned Bitter Music readings, Partche rarities and "Harry's wake")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Lewis:

Thanks Irwin, Corey, Webhamster Henry and everyone else!
  4:29pm Dion:

I was a wanderer once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Webhamster Henry:

This show is kind of made for me - I also was the first person to do Joe Frank's website.

Avatar 4:38pm Serpico:

Joe Frank is just incredible, such monumental work. it's the reason i started listening to your show :)
Avatar 4:41pm Irwin:

I'll provide updates on the disposition of the Partch collection. When it needs to be moved, I'll put out the word for volunteers. As many of you as possible should attend the April 25 farewell concert.
Avatar 4:41pm AnAnonymousParty:

What? 16 umbrellas? Really? I think I'm at 4 and I'm 54. Either I've been lucky, or I'm about to start having a really tough time with umbrellas.
Avatar 4:42pm Droll:

[nodding solemnly at JF's umbrella monograph excerpt] The new Microsoft electronic headband umbrella makes you wish for the good ol' upside-down style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think Joe makes up some of his facts for dramatic effect.
Avatar 4:45pm Droll:

AW, Absolutely not -- these stories are real. Many stories are based on my life, so I know they're real. Please don't ask about the "Hit me with your Punishing Rod" episode.
  4:46pm Eric:

getting into Hardy White territory
Avatar 4:50pm Serpico:

he literally does drill a hole :0
Avatar 4:52pm AnAnonymousParty:

I'm glad he added "to drafts".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm common:

thanks again irwin! have a fine eve, everyone!
Avatar 4:57pm Serpico:

i wouldn't be able to sleep in a room with a dead body either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm mariano:

Thanks for the (semi) weekly dose of vitamin J, Irwin!
Avatar 5:20pm glenn:

hmmm. i've been working with power tools for 40 years, and that doesn't sound like a drill to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Webhamster Henry:

He's also on Facebook, his posts are like mini-Joe Frank shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm rrg:

This is disturbingly good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm rrg:

I was just playing this. Do you have spyware installed on my system?
  5:31pm Dieter:

Yay Kraftwerke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm rrg:

You don't HAVE to play obscure CanCon. It's not the law.
Avatar 5:37pm glenn:

mahogany rush isn't THAT obscure. it's not like he's playing change of heart or something.
  5:38pm Robert:

"Child of the Novelty" winds up like "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm rrg:

Or Lava Hay.
  5:40pm Jon Roy (BitterMusic):

Thanks for this program on our Partch project, Irwin! I'll be posting new videos on the rehearsals, instrument restoration, and more on our fundraising site: igg.me...
Avatar 5:41pm Droll:

That is indeed a very obscure Rush album: all three members quit at that point and it was entirely performed by studio musicians until the band reformed. Sounds nothing like 'em, I think.
Avatar 5:41pm glenn:

i used to know the lava hay chicks.
Avatar 5:42pm glenn:

suzanne and.......something.
  5:42pm Kathy:

Shooby! The human horn! Made me look!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Rich in Washington:

OMG, Irwin! Is this for real, or did someone create it after the fact?
Avatar 5:43pm Droll:

Johnny walks the line -- Shooby crosses it, then kicks dirt on top of it, and scats at you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Rich in Washington:

Google searches of things on Irwin's show often leads one right back to the very playlist one was searching from...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm rrg:

No one plays Shooby except Irwin, and Irwin doesn't play enough of him.
Avatar 5:45pm Irwin:

I steal stuff from my own shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm rrg:

Rich, that means something, in an information-theoretic sense.
Avatar 5:47pm Droll:

Adults pretending to sing like children is more annoying than Jandek to the Yoko'th power.
  5:47pm Alison Porchnik:

I love eggs that much too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Rich in Washington:

yes, it's a nerdy compliment. Actually, it was first pointed out by Vickie Bennett, as another rabid listener to WFMU programs. I've often found that's the case, though, that most really peculiar songs seem to be played first (or at least playlisted) on a WFMU show.
Avatar 5:48pm Irwin:

thanks to AP for the EGG SONG. There's a video too. She should post the link.
Avatar 5:48pm ranjit:

I'm'a let you finish but this is the best egg song of all time: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 5:49pm Droll:

AP, Yes, link please. I need to check for a possible Quadfecta.
  5:49pm jeff in puna:

Great hetfield impression! Hello all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Lars or Starr(s)?
  5:51pm Alison Porchnik:

There is no link. It's a file on my computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm rrg:

Or send it to me and I'll post it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Alison Porchnik:

If any of you can still play a shockwave file, here's the link folks. www.dropbox.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm rrg:

That's it. That's all. See youse later. Thanks to our host.
Avatar 5:58pm Droll:

Thanks Irwin, and have a fun week yinz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm rrg:

Got it, thanks, AP.
Avatar 8:16pm Bas NL:

Recently i found a documentary about former salt mines that are now used for storage of valuable and rare materials. Very secluded, but it might be a safe storage for Partche's beautiful instruments? www.undergroundvaults.com
  11:35am Philip Blackburn:

Thanks for the Partch airing. Betty Freeman was indeed a blessing in later years but Madeline Tourtelot of Chicago (and many others) was a long term angel and artistic collaborator.

Youtube does have versions of some of the films but the whole collection has been digitally remastered for the Enclosures Harry Partch series on innova (archival CDs, book, and DVDs): https://www.innova.mu/composers/harry-partch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47am Michael 98145:

Thank goodness for the Archive.
As far as i know, the Partch instruments are being honored here at the University of Washington.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am Michael 98145:

Yes "are in long-term residence at the UW under the direction of composer and Partch expert Charles Corey."
