I saw Edward Ka-Spel open for Skinny Puppy in, oh geez, 1987
Avatar 3:28pm

Did cEvin Key play with him then?

For the last two weeks I've been hearing stuff on WFMU thinking it was something buy Ka-Spel
Avatar 3:32pm
Looms:

Ah man, I still remember the moment when I listened to The Last Man To Fly for the first time... This was my introduction to LPD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
DCE:

subtle marketing there, Andrew...I think I might just buy some myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
braveness23:

@Looms, no Edward performed solo. I think, but I cannot promise, that it was the famous night that Skinny Puppy got thrown in jail in Cincinnati for "animal abuse" after vivisecting a fake dog. I saw skinny puppy several times in a short period so I'm not certain that this was the same night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

this is sure hitting the sweet spot today

braveness23:

Wow, I like Mum!
Avatar 3:40pm
Looms:

@braveness23: OMG, you were there! :D
This anecdote is so funny and weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I saw Ka-Spel the year he toured with the theremin player.
Avatar 3:42pm
Looms:

Strangly I've never had the chance to see EKS solo. Only the Silverman, and many LPD gigs of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Andrew Waterloo:

There was also a time when the stuffed dog "chud" was stolen by a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
braveness23:

Yup, present. I had a few friends who were jailed with them. I think ultimately they were all jailed for giving the cops a royal pain in the ass and for possession of weed. But the original premise for the cops raiding the show was a complaint of animal torture - which anyone who knows Skinny Puppy knows is ludicrous. To my knowledge Skinny Puppy never returned to Cincinnati and there are numerous interviews where they speak of their fear of the Midwest.
Avatar 3:49pm
dc pat:

just butting in to say this JL Hooker is it, man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
braveness23:

@Andrew, yes Ka-Spel played a theremin (!) and I think he had really heavy face paint and was really dark and psychedelic. I had no idea who he was until much later I just remember that it tickled my taste for dark and weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
DCE:

biting, chilly notes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@B23... nah.. this was around 10 years ago. He was touring with a woman who played theremin. I'm trying to remember her name. I got some good pictures of the show.
Avatar 3:53pm
Carmichael:

Back from luncheon to see ... JEFF! Nice surprise, the morning after Paddy's Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
braveness23:

@Andrew, my recollections should be regarded as highly suspect. If I was 20 and at a Skinny Puppy show it should be assume that I was tripping like mad. Even now I remember that Ka-Spel didn't play a theremin - he stood motionless in the center of the stage and played a single keyboard. It was Ogre that had his rack of vocal processors on top of a mic stand and made crazy theremin like sounds with delay sweeps. Oh well. Fun to think about.
Avatar 3:58pm
Chris from DC:

Andrew, was that Nicoletta Stephanz? Saw her play as Coven of One, quite a few years ago now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Chris, yah that's the name.
@B23, I have seen Edward play with a theremin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Flipped through my ticket stubs and discovered that my tickets to that cancelled Neubauten gig.
Avatar 4:01pm
Chris from DC:

She played in an all theremin show here a while back.

Bardo Pond is always great. I've only seen them twice. I want see them again real bad.

Bardo doesn't play outside Philly much anymore, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

@tim: they are great. they live here in philly and i've only seen them 3 times. always a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
tim from champaign:

The last time I saw Bardo Pond was at the Terrastock in 2008. Kawabata Makato played with them. It was soooo good.
Avatar 4:37pm
Chris from DC:

Probably have seen them 10 or 11 times, and side projects three or four.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
tim from champaign:

I'm jealous of you guys with the close proximity to Bardo Pond. They seem like really nice people too.
Avatar 4:39pm
Cecile:

I think Bardo does quite a few foreign shows too - I seem to remember seeing them on festival bills a lot in the recent past.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
tim from champaign:

Brian Jonestown Massacre never grabbed me but I like this cut a lot.
Avatar 4:40pm
Cheri Pi:

What Tim said, Acid Mothers Temple is on tour next month, hope to catch them in the midwest. Never seen Bardo Pond.
Avatar 4:41pm
Chris from DC:

Yes, they do pretty much either festivals or local stuff in my understanding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
common:

@tim: i don't know them except for the new drummer, jason. he's a terrific fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
DCE:

Bardo Pond will put you into a hypnotic state live. The guitars are crushing yet still somehow subdued. dude.
Avatar 4:42pm

this is a really good track, very spacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm

@dce: totally...dude.
Avatar 4:43pm

I always enjoy their music, but have no idea where to start with them.
Avatar 4:44pm
Cecile:

I mean Bardo Pond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
tim from champaign:

Oh yeah, CP! I'm going to see AMT in Kalamazo this tour. They're playing at a tiny place called Louie's Trophy House. The joint looks like a UP hunting lodge. There's a taxidermied buffalo head on the wall behind the stage. That's gonna be a great show.
Avatar 4:45pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Taxidermy Mother's Temple!
Me jealous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
tim from champaign:

Cecile - I'd start with their most recent stuff and work backwards. Their records are so consistent but for me each record seems to top the previous.
Avatar 4:45pm
Cheri Pi:

Gawd that's gonna be intimate as fuck TFC. still haven't determined which city I'll go, thinking about Nashville.
Avatar 4:46pm
Cheri Pi:

thinking about getting the taxidermy club back together again
Avatar 4:47pm
Cecile:

how far is Nashville from where you're at?
Avatar 4:47pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Whatever the hell that is, CP, it clearly must be done.
Avatar 4:48pm

Glass eyes & pelt stretchers stacked to the raftez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
tim from champaign:

RTD and CP - here's lot of pics of the taxidermy at Louie's : foursquare.com...
Avatar 4:50pm
Cecile:

oh! That's a lot like the Clown Lodge at the TurfClub in St. Paul!
Avatar 4:50pm
Cecile:

Except there are a few clowns thrown in here and there from when it was the Clown Lounge.
Avatar 4:51pm
Cheri Pi:

they don't skimp either, those are the good German glass eyes. One day I'll need to trek there and pay hommage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
tim from champaign:

That joint sounds scary, Cecile!

You should, CP. It's 3 blocks away from Bells and about 6 blocks away from the old Gibson factory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I was thinking about seeing AMT when they come to Toronto. But it's the week after FIMAV
Avatar 4:52pm
MikeY:

I got wood this song is awesome
Avatar 4:52pm
Cheri Pi:

It's about 5 hours to Nashville from here. I've actually never been there either, but Mr. CP the Younger has many times for metal.
Avatar 4:54pm
Cecile:

CP: that's not bad at all if you take 2 days.

It's not as scary as it used to be, Tim. I remember drinking a great deal to get the images out of my head. That might have been the point.
Avatar 4:54pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey I was at that aformetioned Skinny Puppy show mentioned @3:27!
Avatar 4:55pm
Cecile:

so they basically dissected a teddy bear and got banned for life?
Avatar 4:55pm
Cheri Pi:

OK, gotta go kids, MikeY keep your wood having to yourselves, and everyone take care, eh??
Avatar 4:56pm
Cecile:

be well, Ms Pi!
Avatar 4:56pm
Looms:

This track refers to a french comic series named Boule & Bill; it says "Boule, come back here my dog". The problem is that Boule is the boy and Bill is the dog.
Avatar 4:57pm
Cecile:

hey, looms!
Avatar 4:58pm

Avatar 5:16pm

I don't know how i managed to overlook Brume for so long. Everything i've heard from him so far is gorgeous.
Avatar 5:20pm
jeff-m:

yeah, so many Eastern Europe stuff on Drone you never see around here.

the V/A 12"s are good too. Maybe a little more quiet and kind of "grey noisey"
Avatar 5:21pm
Looms:

@cklequ: ha ha! I assume that the problem is to know where to start ;)
Christian Renou is a very gifted musician.
Avatar 5:21pm

Avatar 5:22pm
