Yes, comments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Gaylord Fields:

It went so painlessly the past three (!) weeks that I'm provisionally trying then out for a regular show.
Avatar 6:04pm MattBelow:

Ahoy! I can listen live for a change!
Swag For Life Member 6:04pm 12539:

I hereby vow not to abuse your generosity. By the way, good job at the Hoof N Mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Gaylord Fields:

Good to have you, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm mariano:

Wow, Rael! Been a long time. Great album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@mariano: It's my favorite Who LP.
Avatar 6:06pm V Priceless:

Hey Gaylord! Nice Who track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@12539: As Andy Kaufman would say, "Thank you very much!"
Avatar 6:07pm Whooda:

Thanks a million for the Who DJ Gaylor Fields. BTW your making a BIG mistake with this whole *comments* idea. :)
Avatar 6:10pm V Priceless:

here's a laugh...David Fricke's Top 100 guitarist of all time, not that I go in for the who;e lists thing....more proof RS AND lists are for the birds...take a wild guess where he rates Townsend....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@Whooda: You're too hard on yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm fleep:

Yeah, Whooda, that's our job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Gaylord Fields:

@ V Priceless: Nos. 4, 19, 56, and 88?
Avatar 6:12pm Whooda:

I am a visual dictionary and one image that is literally seared into my brain is the picture of Daltry in the tub of beans.
Avatar 6:13pm V Priceless:

ha! Good one, Gaylord! That's what you would think, right? He rated him #50!!!
Avatar 6:14pm Whooda:

@Gaylord That's what *she* said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Gaylord Fields:

@Whooda: Okay, I'm shutting it down.
Avatar 6:17pm Whooda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Gaylord Fields:

@V Priceless: David's a colleague and friend, so I won't try to get into his head.
Avatar 6:22pm Whooda:

@Gaylord You do realize that you could be tried in the Haugue for torture for forcing that poor little girl eat all that washabi don't you? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Guido (Cologne):

Sell out is THE WHO ALBUM!

Hi Gaylord!
Eastern Standard Summer Time enables me to listen live for a change.
Hello everyone!
Avatar 6:23pm V Priceless:

Understood and fair enough, Gaylord! I respect his right to his opinion...it's just that THAT one is a bit nebulous, for me at least! His argument for Pete's ranking would certainly make for an interesting debate, that's for sure! I think, if for no other reason, these kinds of "lists" at least get people discussing/debating Rock & Roll and music in general, which is good! : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Whooda: She's now a consenting adult. Her relationship with wasabi is her own business,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm fleep:

Ladyfleep passes by during the last cut. "Is that intentional?" "It's WFMU." "Oh, okay."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Gaylord Fields:

@V Priceless: You are absolutely correct. Those lists are classic argument starters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Gaylord Fields:

@Guido: Thanks for the tunes, and for stopping by.
Avatar 6:29pm Whooda:

Regardless of an arbitrary 'ranking' I think Townsend's contribution is more for his 'construction' and showmanship, both extremely important contributions to rock and roll, than for his techincal skill. His invention is equally important, yet not entirely original. I'm not a muscian but am afraid those rankings mix apples and pears. It was mentioned in the documentary of drummer G. Baker, Beware of Mr. Baker, that Moon actually provided the space for Townsend to act.
Swag For Life Member 6:30pm 12539:

(Do gentle people trepan?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Gaylord Fields:

@flerp: Every time a listener's spouse makes a statement like that, a WFMU DJ gets his or her wings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@ V Priceless: The drummer often makes the guitarist. That applies to kit bashers like Keith, eccentrics like Ringo, and even the limited drummers you all know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Guido (Cologne):

Isn't there even a persiflage of the Rolling Stone Guitarists chart from the NY accousic scene?

We had the guitarist ranking discussion elsewhere @ Frank O' Toole's comment board and we agreed that it is for the most part ridiculous. Depending on what music it is about, very different skills are in demand.

I liked Hendrix's statement "I'm the best gutarist sitting in this chair."
Avatar 6:40pm Whooda:

@V Priceless do you remember where Steve Winwood was placed on the list?
Ranking a complete artist (muscian) by isolating one part (guitar skill) is an irrevelant exercise but including all aspects of every mucisian would become too combersome. There are guitarist that are important vocalists, composers, arrangers, troublemakers, chance-takers, play multiple instruments beside guitar, etc. So the criteria must be either techincal skill on that instrument or for the complete package and applied equally to all contenders.
  6:40pm tomB:

Distance analysis of David Fricke's head: To list 100 guitarists by rank, take the best combination rhythm & lead, consider that skill as the perfect average, and assign to #50. Work above and below until you have thought of 99 others.
Avatar 6:43pm madman:

hey Gaylord it was good to meet you on Friday 3/7 on shut up weirdo, and you did a great job last sunday night madman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@madman: Thanks for the compliment! Great to meet you, too.
Avatar 6:45pm tomB:

What! The Riddler wasn't just a two-bit stand-up?
  6:46pm Fuzzydoppel:

Poor Wasabi Girl -- I'm cry!
Avatar 6:46pm Chris M.:

love this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Gaylord Fields:

@tomB: Frank Gorshin was a pretty fair singer and one of the best impressionists of his day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@Chris M.: It's hard to choose a favorite song of one of my favorite artists, but "Negro é lindo" would be my reply most times I'm asked the question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm mariano:

Is this Hank Jones on piano? Sorry it it's an ignorant question, but it sounds a lot like the soloing on the "Something Else" album.
Avatar 6:53pm tomB:

Yeah, I was just wondering, who is that piano player?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Gaylord Fields:

@mariano: You are correct! And "ignorant" is not the word I would use for your deduction.
Avatar 6:56pm MattBelow:

This set is just what I needed after slinging hash browns all morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm mariano:

Aw, thanks, @Gaylord! Saw HJ at the Iridium years ago, probably 1999 or 2000. I bumped into him afterwards and wound up having a little conversation, he was a really nice guy. I think his solos on "Autumn Leaves" are my favorite bits of piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm davex:

Hi Gaylord! Just checking in to add to the compliments for last Sunday and indeed this one as well.
Avatar 7:00pm MattBelow:

Always wished there was a complete version of that rehearsal take...with John doing his best Gilberto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gaylord Fields:

@Matt: It's incredible that bit survived. Maybe some more out-there Beatles tribute band (like the Fab Faux) should re-create the whole arrangement.
  7:08pm JakeGould:

Thank you for the comment think being on now, kind sir. And hello! How is everybody?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: It's only a minor distraction, but it does add a nice dimension to the show I've heretofore been wary of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I guess one distraction is being on troll patrol.
Avatar 7:19pm earrie:

Glad to be wearing a pair o' headphones. This is great.
  7:19pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord Fields: FWIW, the I respect the distraction part but there was one week where the transmitter was all nuts. And there was no easy way to tell folks “Hey, the transmitter is all nuts! What’s up with that?”

@Ken from Hyde Park: A few of the more persistent trolls are now gone it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@Ken From Hyde Park: True.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: If I disable comments, you can always call.
  7:25pm mk:

Loving this show! Wonderful accompaniment to Sunday night dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Guido (Cologne):

Sounds like achim reichel
  7:27pm JakeGould:

I am going to sound like a young kid, but I use my “smart” phone so much I completely forgot about the phone thing. And I have a rotary phone at home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gaylord Fields:

@mk: I do believe the time of day dictates my programming, to some extent. Enjoy your dinner!
Avatar 7:30pm Whooda:

@Jake I think those rotary phone are going to make a comeback someday, they are becoming more sought-after all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: I have several rotary-dial phones at home, including two Ericofon (Cobra) sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm davex:

The music works here at half past midnight as well...
  7:35pm sugarwolf:

Hello! Guess who timed her work break to listen to you, Gaylord?
Avatar 7:36pm glenn:

meh. everybody knows george barnes is the greatest guitarist ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Is the answer "sugarwolf"?
Avatar 7:40pm MattBelow:

Edison didn't come to stay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@davex: There I go being all time-zone-centric! Pleasant dreams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@MattBelow: You can't misspell "miscue" without "w-f-m-u"!
  7:43pm I. Fisher:

Gaylord, thank you for the selections - delicious, smart, aspirational, but never precious (as in the sense of affected).
Avatar 7:45pm Whooda:

And the playlist has a real pretty mouth too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@I. Fisher: That's very kind of you to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gaylord Fields:

@Whooda: Certainly, you mean "purty," yes?
Avatar 7:52pm Whooda:

haha, yes I do, it is a wonderful setlist though (with or without overalls)
Avatar 7:53pm V Priceless:

@Whooda - just a follow-up to your Q - I do not recall where Winwood was ranked. Lists being the subjective product of the creator that they are, not much we can do other than debate them. IMHO, few have done more to transform the "sound" (albeit by way of sheer volume & aggression) of the then-fledgling electric guitar in pop music than Townsend, even if he wasn't also a writer - Hendrix and Buddy Guy, without a doubt, and a handful of others, sure. What makes the RS list puzzling to me - and I mean no disrespect to any of these artists - but for instance, what is the criteria by which Garcia, Cobain, Johnny Ramone and Jack White rank higher than Townsend? I guess I'm missing the point of it. I suspect so-called "break through" moments in the fabric of "popular music" that resulted in totally new "sub genres" of Rock & Roll may enter into the equation to help justify such selections, but what do I know? And even knowing nothing, I find it difficult to justify PT being resigned to the middle of the 100 "most influential" guitarists! Great set going, GF!
Avatar 7:54pm C-Pigeon:

Listening in the Catskills ... Great MC'ing at Thon FInale, Gaylord. You are a true pro. Wondermints!
  7:55pm JakeGould:

You know what this playlist is not? A butterface. It’s in no ways a butterface.
Avatar 7:55pm V Priceless:

this just in: Scott Ashton RIP! : (
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@C-Pigeon: I could and will say the same about you and your impromptu hype man on the Eric B. and Rakim jam.
Swag For Life Member 7:58pm 12539:

It's nice to have this opportunity to say, for once, Thank You, Gaylord.
Avatar 7:58pm Whooda:

V-Priceless I agree, as a basic gut-reaction, Townsend would be close to the top of my list. I use the "air-guitar" standard of who have I pretended to be most often: Clapton, Townsend, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaugan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Scott "Rock Action" Asheton, drummer from The Stooges? Yes, RIP, and sad news.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Guido (Cologne):

The Rolling Stone List consists of averages from votings of several authors.
No system as such.
Avatar 7:59pm MattBelow:

Fantastic set GF
Avatar 7:59pm madman:

Avatar 8:00pm Sonny Rickles:

Townsend is the best!! My #1!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Guido (Cologne):
