Knockout performance on Sunday, efd!
Avatar 9:02pm

Yeah DJ Evan 'Funk' Davies and ELO! Does anyone know the story (if there is one) behind the prelude intro to this ELO song?

@Whooda, look here. www.songfacts.com...
Avatar 9:06pm

Good evening, everyone! :)
Avatar 9:06pm

Missed the first ten of Andrea's show, so of course I also miss the first six of Evan's show
Avatar 9:07pm

hi everybody!

How Dare You is really a great great record.
Avatar 9:09pm
Holly in NC:

@efd, your eddie & the hot rods cover was a major highlight of the marathon finale, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

Killer Hoof and Mouth, EFD!
Avatar 9:10pm

@Jake Thanks man! That'answered me. Plus I have that cool music link for reference in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

whoa, thanks for the compliments everyone! Sunday night was a lot of fun. Nice to see you all here tonight!

Oh, good. The CBS Sports Spectacular is on. Wait, it's not Saturday afternoon 35 years ago!?!?

Yeah, Song Facts is pretty good.
Avatar 9:13pm

Agreed, Holly!
Avatar 9:15pm

@Jake, I just hope I can remember that name "songfacts" when I want to find some song facts.

Barkevious Shabazz:

That great little 3-4 album streak by the Pre John Hughes Simple Minds remains damned respectable.
Avatar 9:16pm

And apologies for rewarding your effort with a pun, Evan! :p

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Awlright ! I been sayin' for days how solid a drummer you are efd man! I play guitar like everybody, but I've barely played w/ a drummer @ all - so I love drummers ! They still impress me...But why didn't Dave Hill do three-finger trills thru a Marshall Stack - ?!?
Avatar 9:17pm

I honestly didn't know about them playing this style! I only knew of Don't You Forget about me
V Priceless:

Holy Smokes! I second that remark about "How Dare You"! Simply superb record!

Hearing this, I thought "Oh, this is where the Beastie Boys grabbed that sample." Forgot it was one of their instrumentals.
Avatar 9:22pm
Holly in NC:

Ack! Most go offline, back asap. 10ish? Meanwhile efd, please play only moderately great songs :-)

This show is an instrumentalcase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm

Yay!! and love for YLT!

Great, great first set.
Avatar 9:24pm

So I just learned that David Lynch, Trent Reznor and John Carpenter have each collaborated individually with Jean Michel Jarre for his album slated to come out later this year. Holy hell!

BGZ, that sounds like it could be potentially be equally amazing & terrible.
Avatar 9:27pm

OMG, Randall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...has High on Fire ever covered Fire on High? Are you playing instrumentals because everyone there is tired of thinking about singing Post-Marathon? These & other questions...should be ignored...Sounds very Cinematic BGZ - or CineMusical - an interesting group of people indeed...not @ the same time I'm sure - but Reznor & Lynch together alone spurs the imagination !...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Matt F:

We are listening to these swinging instrumentals while preparing a meat sauce that Amanda has dubbed "Saltalamacchia".
Avatar 9:31pm

There are rumors that Gary Numan and Vince Clarke also collaborated on the Jarre album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm

It's your theme too EL!

Hello hello
Fernando M P:

As much as the marathons are fun, is for sets like this that I listen and pledge to WFMU.

Apropos to subtraction, watching this Seinfeld super cut called “Nothing” right now while listening to this. Scenes from Seinfeld where nothing happens. vimeo.com...
Avatar 9:36pm

I am not so savvy :(

: )

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm

Just listening to WFMU makes you instantly savvy!

Sorry Callie— that was for efd's last comment. Not a reaction to yours. :/
Avatar 9:42pm

@Matt Saltalamacchia sounds like a real train wreck of a dish, what happened?

if only that were true, Evan
Avatar 9:42pm

lol, I figured. I was not offended!

Whew! The internet is hard to do.

The indignity of John Denver's "Calypso" is finally righted by The Paley Bros.
Avatar 9:52pm

@Matt The first attempt at roasted turkey in a new marriage became immortalized as "Turkey Traumatismo"
Eddy in Australia:

Here I was thinking the whole show was going to be instrumental as anything!
@Evan: Great work during the marathon. Loved the Eddie & the Hot Rods cover, too.
Simple Minds were quite popular down here in that period (Love Song was even a chart hit), and earlier songs like I Travel and Celebrate were even better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & Cousteau in French solidarity w/ Bodega Pop tonight on the GTDR stream
- loves the Groovies; need to go to Archive for them on TerreT's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm

Eddy, I love "I Travel" too - a fave song since it came out.
Avatar 10:06pm
Holly in NC:

Oh, hero Joe. So many questions, and he WILL help you. Due to vagaries in pledge process Joe's going to need some extra love, give it up!

Barkevious Shabazz:

Dag. Thought this Fingerprintz was Skin Deep by the Passions for a sec. Ace track.
Avatar 10:09pm
Holly in NC:

@MattF & Amanda - I would love to know more about Saltamacchia. What can you share? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

Pretty sure I made that very segue back in the day, Barkevious!

God I love Robert Cray...thank you.
Avatar 10:13pm
Holly in NC:

@Barkevious! I've missed you!
Eddy in Australia:

Damn, that Fingerprintz song was good. Can't believe I ignored them at the time (was it their name? their logo?). For a few moments there I thought it might be the Bush Tetras (the guitar?).
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Glad you're able to be here for a while, tonight.

Barkevious Shabazz:

This Bappi Lahiri is unintentionally totally badass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

Eddy, they moved in a more synth/dance direction after the Very Dab LP, but that album is great and the single they put out before that ("Dancing With Yourself") remains one of my all-time fave power pop records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

(and, therefore, one of my all-time fave records)
Eddy in Australia:

@EFD: Thanks for the tip. I'll go digging ...
Avatar 10:30pm

DJ EFD I'm sure you have but if not the documentary of Ginger Baker, Beware of Mr. Baker, is an excellent pic.

I just got the Bappi Lahiri soundtrack that song is from in Calcutta in January, it's from a Bond ripoff film. Bappi is the undisputed king of Bollywood disco as far as I'm concerned. These days he's physically as big as a house and is sadly an active member of India's virulent Hindu nationalist party BJP.

Hey Hatch - glad to see celebrities here :)

Btw, I am 100% unprepared for the EFDHHDYDTYFBB draft :(

wow! Very cool, Hatch!

WHooda, others have suggested that doc but I haven't checked it out yet. Someday...

@efd, thank you. While not a huge Drivin' & Cryin' fan, I think Mr. Fowler may have participated in some Frank French/Kevin Kinney works which I heartily enjoy.

@Whooda - I hope you've had a chance to see SCOTS live - limbo+ fried chicken, fun.

Camel Walk one of best 7'' ever. Do not even think about disputin' ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Santos L Halper:

@Holly You got that right about SCOTS. Can it really be 30 years ago that i saw them first?! Jeez
Avatar 11:06pm
Holly in NC:

@Santos - If 30 years, you beat me, I bow down. Come get some snack crackers from under my pointy boots!
Avatar 11:09pm

@Holly, I readily understand that 'live' is the only way to truly appreciate SCOTS, but alas, I've only seen a few videos. WIKI: "... as they usually write and perform songs about dancing, sex, and fried chicken," gotta love that!

@Santos AND @Whooda - Little Debbie, Little Debbie!

Let's set up a virtual show. Limbo sticks & fried chicken not optional, pointy boots huge bonus.
Avatar 11:25pm
Holly in NC:

White Hills wonderful.

Chris Stamey amazing. Talk about icon/idol, been following since early 80s, well before I moved to NC. Does not get enough credit.

If anyone owns "The Robust Beauty of Improper Linear Models in Decision Making" I will pay for a mp3 copy, my cd skips & it's impossible to find online. Fair warning -anyone who doesn't own it would likely hate it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm

This Stamey is quite pleasant.
Avatar 11:27pm

@Holly haha let's break out those cream pies Little Debbie.
  Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

@Holly: eBay has a purported new copy for $1.00.

Is @Trouble in Mind here tonight? Really enjoying Morgan Delt & Greg Ashley.

@Whooda - One of my client/friends recently passed at a happy & mostly healthy age 97, her very favorite treat = Little Debbie Oatmeal cakes (pies?)

I grew up as a Yankee Hostess chick so never got the appeal, but respect ;-)
