then there was always one kid that found a way to have nightmares about almost every toy, comic book, TV show. Like maybe Batman didn't give him nightmares, but Robin did. And Alfred the Butler. And Snoopy. And Twister (especially the idea of playong Twister with gurls)

@P-90 so this *friend* was scared by Robin?

Noted: amEdeo's not going topless in the studio. Yet.

I'm pretty sure that the "Girder & Panel" building sets are what I'm thinking of.

Remember the Bugs ep with Tasmo and the "Wild Turkey Surprise" ? The last time I saw it they'd censored out the Kaboom. SUCH is the state of Murrcan kulchur. A generation of dweebs à la THX-1138.

@BGZ yeah I think it's a Kenner set I'm thinking of. Plastic sheets with rows of holes to snap over lines of pins on structural elements. In theory wobbly, but in practice pretty OK.

Those old violent Looney Tunes are even better today through the perspective of contemporary mush that is "politically correct'

P-90:

Yes! Girder and Panel! I was trying to remember what it was called
And: Meccano was/is the SHIT!
it sas real expensive, so we all got erector sets instead because with either one you were gonna need a lot of it to do anything interesting, and Meccano was from EUROPE and was hard to get and pricey, back in those Jonny Quest boyhood days

fred von helsing:

I had a big Lionel Erector Set and it made some cool stuff but I think Meccano is the superior medium for building anti-riot-police attack robots.
Avatar 5:33am
fred von helsing:

For one thing, Meccano has superior propulsion elements.

BadGuyZero:

You will see much less of me this marathon.

Sorry.
Avatar 5:37am
fred von helsing:

But Meccano is too heavy for flying robots. There's no cool modular building kit for those yet I guess cos the power-to-weight situation is still very borderline.

WFMU should have a marathon quadcopter navigating the hallways with a camera. It would be a geek hit. And it could haul DJ kibble.

Flutes OK. Got harp ? Harps are tops.

amEdeo:

OooOooo. I am already talking to people about doing a secondary BEHIND-THE-SCENES feed in tandem with my main video feed. Maybe someone can get a copter to attach that camera to! WHO KNOWS.

But to be honest, it'll probably be handheld.

P-90:

You couldnt get or even see everything on the internet, even catalogs for some of these things were prized items, read reread and passed from kid to kid. And there were a few big stores that had all this cool stuff, from all over the world, FAO Shwarz was this Mecca of exotica, and there was another store in NY called Polk's where they had all the balsa wood plane kits and incredibly detailed Japanese model kits of every different model of American and German tanks, planes, ships from WWII and Korea, and those balsa and paper model rockets with the gunpowder-filled paper engines etc, and then the gas-powered model planes with the wickedly loud tiny engines, and the the radio-controlled stuff which was staggeringly high-tech, AT the time...

fred von helsing:

But trying to make an .049 run reliably was always a pain. I never saw any of the monster engines run (.60 etc.)
Avatar 5:49am
Whooda:

Hey you could do the action-cam like they do in the big sports venues. Run a clothes line down the hall just above head level and attach a shower curtain hook to someones Iphone and sling it down the clothes line real fast. But it will probably go flying off of the clothes line and smack someone in the face. LET"S DO IT!
Avatar 5:52am
fred von helsing:

You could also just get a remote control big truck and put an iPhone on that. It could roam whatever floor is on the air. And haul DJ kibble.

Ahahahahaha, THAT SOUNDS LIKE MY KIND OF CAMERA! Vio-Cam: The Cam That Hits Back!

P-90:

I think there are little drones availble now that carry little vid cameras and fly in hallways, etc.
Not exactly Broadcast Quality, but...
I love that Ed MacMahon introduction clip from when Beonce was on Star Search! I wish I coulda been there when Ed was coached on how to say each of the girl's names correctly

?:

hi all. yeah cam drones are on sale (and quite cheap) but you can end up in jail if used in public space. this happened to a high school boy in my hometown... france can look like north corea sometimes.

P-90:

you're right, human cam operators is the way to go
what format(s) are you planning to shoot on?
Avatar 5:59am

Probably a WFMU R/C truck should have a nerf rocket launcher for assaulting Ken and other targets of opportunity
